AIM： To analyze the risk of cardiovascular complications in patients with indication for surgical treatment of Chagasic esophageal achalasia and to correlate the surgical risks with the degree of esophageal dilation, thereby proposing a risk scale index. METHODS： One hundred and twenty-four patients with Chagasic esophageal achalasia, who received surgical treatment at the Hospital das Clinicas of the Federal University of Goiás, were included in this study. The patients were mostly related to the postoperative complications due to the cardiovascular system. All the patients were submitted to：（1） clinical history to define the cardiac functional class （New York Heart Association）; （2） conventional 12-lead electrocardiogram at rest; and （3） contrast imaging of the esophagus to determine esophageal dilatation according to Rezende＇s classification of Chagasic megaesophagus. RESULTS： An assessment of the functional classification （FC） of heart failure during the preoperative period determined that 67 patients （54.03%） were assigned functional class Ⅰ （FC Ⅰ）, 46 patients （37.09%） were assigned functional class Ⅱ （FC Ⅱ）, and 11 patients （8.87%） were assigned functional class Ⅲ （FC Ⅲ）. None of the patients were assigned to functional class Ⅳ （FC Ⅳ）. There was a positive correlation between the functional class and the postoperative complications （FC Ⅰ×FC Ⅱ： P〈0.001; FC Ⅰ×FC Ⅲ： P〈0.001）. The ECG was normal in 44 patients （35.48%） and presented abnormalities in 80 patients （64.52%）. There was a significant statistical correlation between abnormal ECG （arrhythmias and primary change in ventricular repolarization） and postoperative complications （P〈0.001）. With regard to the classification of the Chagasic esophageal achalasia, the following distribution was observed： group Ⅱ, 53 patients （42.74%）; group Ⅲ, 37 patients （29.83%）; and group Ⅳ, 34 patients （27.41%）. BACKGROUND Scaphoid fracture is the most commonly fractured carpal bone in the athletic patient, accounting for over 85% of all sport-related carpal bone fractures, and is particularly common in sports involving high impact injuries to the wrist. The management of such injuries comprises both conservative and surgical techniques, as guided by fracture location and type. Athletes demonstrate a unique challenge with regards to the management of scaphoid fractures due to their requirement to return to sport, as soon as *** To review systemically all studies recording return to sport following scaphoid fractures, to collate information on return rates to sport(RRS) and mean return times(RTS) to sport and to determine differences in sporting outcome for the various treatment *** A systematic search of MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHAL, Cochrane, Google Scholar, Physiotherapy Evidence Database, SPORTDiscus, Web of Science and Scopus was performed in August 2018 using the keywords "scaphoid","fracture", "acute", "carpal", "athletes", "sports", "non-operative","conservative", "operative" and "return to sport". All studies that recorded RRS and RTS following scaphoid fractures were included. RTS was recorded as the length of time from commencement of either primary conservative management or primary surgical procedure to return to *** Eleven studies were included: Two randomised controlled trials, six retrospective cohort studies and three case series. Seven studies reported on conservative management(n = 77), and eight studies reported on surgical management(n =83). For conservative management, RRS was 90%(69/77), and the mean RTS was9.6 wk. Three studies allowed to return to sport in cast [RRS 89%(25/28); RTS 1.9 wk], and four studies required completion of cast treatment prior to returning to sport [RRS 90%(44/49); RTS 13.9 wk]. In this study, the effects of discharge rate and LiMn2O4 cathode properties （thickness, porosity, particle size, and solid-state diffusivity and conductivity） on the gravimetric energy and power density of a lithium-ion battery cell are analyzed simultaneously using a cell-level model. Surrogate-based analysis tools are applied to simulation data to construct educed-order models, which are in turn used to perform global sensitivity analysis to compare the relative importance of cathode properties. Based on these results, the cell is then optimized for several distinct physical scenarios using gradient-based methods. The comple-mentary nature of the gradient-and surrogate-based tools is demonstrated by establishing proper bounds and constraints with the surrogate model, and then obtaining accurate optimized solutions with the gradient-based optimizer. These optimal solutions enable the quantification of the tradeoffs between energy and power density, and the effect of optimizing the electrode thickness and porosity. In conjunction with known guidelines, the numerical optimization frame-work developed herein can be applied directly to cell and pack design.

The aim of this lab was to determine an experimental value for the charge-to-mass ratio e/me of the electron. In order to do this, an assembly consisting of Helmholtz coils and a helium-filled fine beam tube containing an electron gun was used. Electrons were accelerated from rest by the electron gun at a voltage of 201.3 V kept constant across trials. When the accelerated electrons collided with the helium atoms in the fine beam tube, the helium atoms entered an excited state and released energy as light. Since the Helmholtz coils put the electrons into centripetal motion, this resulted in a circular beam of light, the radius of which was measured by taking a picture and using photo analysis. This procedure was used to test currents through the Helmholtz coils ranging from 1.3 A to 1.7 A in increments of 0.1 A. Using a linearization of these data, the experimental value for the charge-to-mass ratio of the electron was found to be 1.850 × 1011 C/kg, bounded between 1.440 × 1011 C/kg and 2.465 × 1011 C/kg. This range of values includes the accepted value of 1.759 × 1011 C/kg, and yields a percent error of 5.17%. The rather low percent error is a testament to the accuracy of this procedure. During this experiment, the orientation of the ambient magnetic field due to the Earth at the center of the apparatus was not considered. In the future, it would be worthwhile to repeat this procedure, taking care to position the Helmholtz coils in such a way to negate the effects of the Earth’s magnetic field on the centripetal motion of electrons.

The Local Acceleration Due to Gravity as Determined with a Cart and Track

The aim of this lab is to determine an experimental value for the local acceleration due to gravity. In order to do this, a cart was released down a track and allowed to pass through two photogates recording the entrance and exit times of the cart. These times along with the length of a light blocking strip on the cart, were used to calculate the acceleration of the cart down the track at various angles, and through linearization, the experimental value for the local acceleration due to gravity was determined to be 10.027 ± 0.312 m/s2. This value has a percent error of only 2.2% from the accepted value of 9.8 m/s2, which proves that this method of determining local acceleration due to gravity can be effective and accurate. Additionally, this experimental value shows how similar the approximation is to the accepted value.
