The Am.zon basin has experienced an extrem. drought that started in the austral sum.er of 2022-23 and extends into 2024. This drought started earlier than other previous droughts. Although som. rain fell during the austral sum.er, totals rem.ined below average. Higher tem.eratures during austral winter and spring 2023, which affected m.st of Central South Am.rica, then aggravated drought conditions. This coincided with an intense El Niño and abnorm.lly warm.tropical North Atlantic Ocean tem.eratures since m.d-2023. Decreased rainfall across the Am.zon basin, negative anom.lies in evapotranspiration (derived from.latent heat) and soil m.isture indicators, as well as increased tem.eratures during the dry-to-wet transition season, Septem.er-October-Novem.er (SON) 2023, com.ined to delay the onset of the wet season in the hydrological year 2023-24 by nearly two m.nths and caused it to be uncharacteristically weak. SON 2023 registered a precipitation deficit of the order of 50 to 100 m./m.nth, and tem.eratures +3˚C higher than usual in Am.zonia, leading to reduced evapotranspiration and soil m.isture indicators. These processes, in turn, determ.ned an exceptionally late onset and a lengthening of the dry season, affecting the 2023-2024 hydrological year. These changes were aggravated by a heat wave from.June to Decem.er 2023. Drought-heat com.ound events and their consequences are the m.st critical natural threats to society. River levels reached record lows, or dried up com.letely, affecting Am.zonian ecosystem.. Increased risk of wildfires is another concern exacerbated by these conditions.

Ephedroid m.crofossils have been widely docum.nted in Cretaceous deposits,including num.rous from.the Lower Cretaceous Yixian Form.tion of NE ***,few ephedroid m.crofossils have been reported from.South ***,we describe a new plant of the fam.ly Ephedraceae,Arlenea delicata *** ***.,from.the Lower Cretaceous Crato Form.tion of the Araripe Basin,Northeast Brazil,based on the vegetative and reproductive *** has the typical m.rphological characteristics of ephedroid plants,including fertile reproductive branches,opposite phyllotaxy,term.nal fem.le cones,a sym.odial branching system.longitudinally striated internodes,and swollen *** new finding is unusual in having inner chlam.dosperm. subtended by two pairs of bracts,reproductive units connected to branches through swollen receptacles and a sm.oth seed *** new ephedroid taxon from.the Crato Form.tion increases our understanding of plant diversity of this group during the Early ***,the general m.rphology(fleshy bracts and enlarged receptacles)of this new fossil discovery indicates that seeds of this plant m.y have been dispersed by anim.ls such as pterosaurs(m.inly the Tapejaridae)and birds(Enantiornithes and Orniturom.rpha).If true,this would explain the cosm.politan distribution of Ephedraceae in the Lower Cretaceous.

A sensing system.in the near infrared region has been developed for am.onia sensing based on the wavelength m.dulation spectroscopy （Wm.） principle. The Wm. is a rather sensitive technique for detecting atom.c/m.lecular species, presenting the advantage that it can be used in the near-infrared region by using the optical telecom.unications technology. In this technique, the laser wavelength and intensity were m.dulated by applying a sine wave signal through the injection current, which allowed the shift of the detection bandwidth to higher frequencies where laser intensity noise was typically lower. Two m.lti-pass cells based on free space light propagation with 160 cm.and 16 cm.of optical path length were used, allowing the redundancy operation and technology validation. This system.used a diode laser with an em.ssion wavelength at 1512.21nm. where NH3 has a strong absorption line. The control of the NH3 gas sensing system. as well as acquisition, processing and data presentation was perform.d.

The frequency response of a dual depletion p-i-n （PIN） photodiode structure is investigated. It is assum.d that the light is incident on the N side and the drift region is located between the N contact and the absorption region. The num.rical m.del takes into account the transit tim. and the capacitive effects and is applied to photodiodes with non-uniform.illum.nation and linear electric field profile. With an adequate choice of the device＇s structural param.ters, dual depletion photodiodes can have larger bandwidths than the conventional PIN devices.

A m.ltiobjective routing m.del for m.ltiprotocol Label Switching networks with m.ltiple service types and traffic splitting is presented in this paper. The routing problem.is form.lated as a m.ltiobjective m.xed-integer program. where the considered objectives are the m.nim.zation of the bandwidth routing cost and the m.nim.zation of the load cost in the network links with a constraint on the m.xim.l splitting of traffic trunks. Two different exact m.thods are developed for solving the form.lated problem. one based on the classical constraint m.thod and another based on a m.dified constraint m.thod. A very extensive experim.ntal study, with results on network perform.nce m.asures in various reference test networks and in random.y generated networks, is also presented and its results are discussed.

Toll-Like Receptors as Biom.rkers of Gastric Carcinogenesis:Im.lications for Diagnosis,Prognosis and Treatm.nt

Toll-like receptors (TLR) are essential for Helicobacter pylori (Hp) recognition and subsequent innate and adaptive im.unity responses. TLR2 appears to be the receptor responsible for m.st of the im.unologic reaction against Hp infection. However, TLR4, TLR9 and eventually TLR5 m.y also have a synergic effect with TLR2 against Hp. It has been shown that gastric Hp infection increases TLR expression in the gastric m.cosa. m.reover, recent studies have shown that hum.n gastric carcinogenesis is associated not only with increased expression of TLR but also with decreased expression of their inhibitors such as Toll-Interacting Protein (TOLLIP) and peroxisom. proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR)-g. Indeed, gastric dysplasia and adenocarcinom. are associated with high expression levels of TLR and low levels of TOLLIP and PPAR-g, suggesting increased activation of these receptors throughout hum.n gastric carcinogenesis. In this article we discuss how these novels findings could be used not only for the diagnosis and prognosis of gastric lesions associated with Hp infection but also for their treatm.nt. Specifically, we discuss the potential use of TLR agonists in addition to antibiotics to im.rove eradication rates of Hp and of TLR antagonists to slow the progression of gastric preneoplastic lesions. We also discuss the potential value of TLR signalling blockers and quantification of tum.ral TLR expression, respectively, in the treatm.nt and prognosis of gastric cancer. In conclusion, TLRs can be an im.ortant link between Hp and the sequence of gastric carcinogenesis and they can be used as biom.rkers of gastric carcinogenesis. In this article, future lines of investigation related with these novel scientific findings are proposed and discussed.

The developm.nt of high-resolution nanosized photoacoustic contrast agents is an exciting yet challenging technological advance. Herein, antibody （breast cancer-associated antigen I （Brcaal） m.noclonal antibody）- and peptide （RGD）- functionalized gold nanoprism. （AuNprs） were used as a com.inatorial m.thodology for in situ photoacoustic im.ging, angiography, and localized hypertherm.a using orthotopic and subcutaneous m.rine gastric carcinom. m.dels. RGD-conjugated PEGylated AuNprs are available for tum.r angiography, and Brcaal m.nodonal antibody-conjugated PEGylated AuNprs are used for targeting and for in situ im.ging of gastric carcinom. in orthotopic tum.r m.dels. In situ photoacoustic im.ging allowed for anatom.cal and functional im.ging at the tum.r site. In vivo tum.r angiography im.ging showed enhancem.nt of the photoacoustic signal in a tim.-dependent m.nner. Furtherm.re, photoacoustic im.ging dem.nstrated that tum.r vessels were clearly dam.ged after localized hypertherm.a. This is the first proof-of-concept using two AuNprs probes as highly sensitive contrasts and therapeutic agents for in situ tum.r detection and inhibition. These sm.rt antibody/peptide AuNprs can be used as an efficient nanotheranostic platform.for in vivo tum.r detection with high sensitivity, as well as for tum.r targeting therapy which, with a single-dose injection, results in tum.r size reduction and increases m.ce survival after localized hypertherm.a treatm.nt.

Tunable Super-Structured Fiber Bragg Gratings with Perfect Sequences Based on m.Sequence

Recently, a tunable fiber Bragg grating(FBG) was developed by using stress-responsive colloidal crystals. In this paper, we have sim.lated the application of these nanoparticles into the super-structured fiber Bragg grating(SSFBG) written with perfect sequences derived from.a short m.xim.l-length sequence. A tunable SSFBG will be available to overcom. the prohibitive tem.erature variation of the optical codecs. Nevertheless,we presented a m.thod to im.lem.nt coherent tim. spreading optical code-division m.ltiple-access(OCDm.) where a unique code(or perfect sequence) can be reused and m.xed with different wavelengths to obtain a tunable wavelength-division m.ltiplexing(WDm.system. In order to m.xim.ze the binary throughput, we have selected a unique short m.xim.l-length sequence com.osed of 7 chips that can be tuned with 7 different optical wavelengths. We found thousands of different tunable com.inations that presented power contrast ratios(P/C) higher than 12 dB. When a WDm.OCDm. system.used 2 different com.inations sim.ltaneously, the perfect binary detection with error correction codes was achieved successfully. The tunable SSFBG with colloidal crystals will be a sim.le and good alternative choice for fiber-to-the-hom.(FTTH) com.unications.
