scanning electrochemical microscopy(sECM)and scanning vibrating electrode technique(sVET)were used to investigate the electrochemical behaviour of the top surface of the 2098-T351 alloy welded by friction stir welding(FsW).The sVET technique was efficient in identifying the cathodic and anodic weld *** welding joint(WJ),which comprises the thermomechanically affected zone(TMAZ)and the stir zone(sZ),was cathodic relative to the heated affected zone(HAZ)and the base metal(BM).The reactivities of the welding joint at the advancing side(As)and the retreating side(Rs)were analyzed and compared using sECM technique in the competition mode by monitoring the dissolved oxygen as a redox mediator in 0.005 mol L^-1 NaCl *** Rs was more electrochemically active than the As,and these results were correlated with the microstructural features of the welded alloy.

Relative humidity(RH) is a critical environmental variable for transportation and storage of products and for the quality guarantee of several other production processes and services. Heterogeneous structures prepared from the selective semiconductor oxides may improve the sensitivity to humidity due to the better electronic and surface properties, when compared to pristine oxides. This work shows an alternative fabrication route for producing titanium dioxide/tungsten trioxide(TiO2/WO3) heterogeneous structures(by electrospinning and sintering) for potential application on the RH detection. The microstructural properties of the materials were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy(sEM), energy dispersive X-ray analysis(EDs), X-ray diffraction, and Raman spectroscopy. The electrical characterization of the structures was performed by electrical impedance spectroscopy in RH range of 10%–100%. Results indicated a p-to n-type conduction transition at around 30%–40% RH for all tested settings. The analysis of the impedance signature to humidity showed that the amount of fiber layers on the electrode and working temperature are important parameters to improve the humidity sensing of the TiO2/WO3 systems.

Modern compilers apply various code transformation algorithms to improve the quality of the target code. However, a complex problem is to determine which transformation algorithms must be utilized. This is difficult because of three reasons： a number of transformation algorithms, various combination possibilities, and several configuration possibil- ities. Over the last few years, various intelligent systems were presented in the literature. The goal of these systems is to search for transformation algorithms and thus apply them to a certain program. This paper proposes a flexible, low-cost and intelligent system capable of identifying transformation algorithms for an input program, considering the program＇s specific features. This system is flexible for parameterization selection and has a low-computational cost. In addition, it has the capability to maximize the exploration of available computational resources. The system was implemented under the Low Level Virtual Machine infrastructure and the results indicate that it is capable of exceeding, up to 21.36%, performance reached by other systems. In addition, it achieved an average improvement of up to 17.72% over the most aggressive compiler optimization level of the Low Level Virtual Machine infrastructure.

The Egyptia n mon goose (Herpestes ichneumon Linn aeus, 1758) is a medium-sized car nivore that experienced remarkable geographic expansion over the last 3 decades in the Iberian Peninsula. In this study, we investigated the association of species-related and abiotic factors with spleen weight (as a proxy for immunocompete nee) in the species. We assessed the relationship of body con dition, sex, age, seas on, and envir onmental conditi ons with splee n weight established for 508 hunted specimens. Our results indicate that the effects of sex and season outweigh those of all other variables, including body condition. spleen weight is higher in males than in females, and heavier spleens are more likely to be found in spring, coinciding with the highest period of investment in reproduction due to mating, gestation, birth, and lactation. Coupled with the absence of an effect of body condition, our findi ngs suggest that splee n weight variation in this species is mostly influe need by lifehistory traits linked to reproduction, rather than overall energy availability, winter immunoenhancement, or energy partitioning effects, and prompt further research focusing on this topic.

The Laboratory for Intense Lasers(L2I) is a research centre in optics and lasers dedicated to experimental research in high intensity laser science and technology and laser plasma interaction. Currently the laboratory is undergoing an upgrade with the goal of increasing the versatility of the laser systems available to the users, as well as increasing the pulse repetition rate. In this paper we review the current status of the laser research and development programme of this facility, namely the upgraded capability and the recent progress towards the installation of an ultrashort, diode-pumped OPCPA laser system.

Introduction Promoting physical activity is the key to facing the increasing epidemic of non-communicable diseases in the globe,particularly in the emerging and developing *** this purpose Agita sao Paulo, a multi-level intervention program,comprising intra-personal,social and physical environmental factors was launched in 1996,targeting the 40 million inhabitants of sao Paulo state—Brazil(Agita sao Paulo Program,2002,Matsudo s et al 2004).World Bank estimated that the program represents a cost saving of 310 million dollars per year(World Bank,2005).

Objective: To demonstrate the feasibility of inguinal hernia repair with local anesthesia in an out-patient regime, with safety, efficacy and short learning curve. Methods: We prospectively evaluated 1186 patients undergoing inguinal hernia repair under local anesthesia on an outpatient basis between November 2004 and March 2014. Of the total number of hernias surgically treated in this period, 755 were operated on the right, 394 on the left and 37 bilateral. We used clinical, surgical and psychosocial criteria for inclusion in the procedure. The parameters for exclusion were complex, irreducible or recurrent hernia, obesity (BMI greater than 30 kg/m2), patient’s refusal and psychiatric disorder. All patients underwent elective surgery and were analyzed regarding surgical outcome, complications and hospital stay. Results: All operations were completed successfully. In no case there was a need to change the anesthetic method. surgical time was similar to that conducted with other methods of anesthesia and there were no cases of adverse effects of local anesthetics. Intra-operative complications amounted to approximately 2.64%. There was no need for hospital admissions greater than 24 hours. Conclusion: The procedure is feasible and causes no perioperative significant pain, is safe, can be performed by residents under supervision, has satisfactory patient acceptance and complications similar to those observed in a conventional herniorrhaphy, allowing lower time and cost of hospitalization and faster access to treatment.

We demonstrate high efficiency second harmonic generation(sHG) of near infrared femtosecond pulses using a BiB3 O6 crystal in a single-pass tight focusing geometry setup. A frequency doubling efficiency of 63% is achieved, which is,to the best of our knowledge, the highest value ever reported in the femtosecond regime for such low energy(nJ-level)pumping pulses. Theoretical analyses of the pumping scheme focusing waist and the sHG efficiency are performed, by numerically solving the three wave mixing coupled equations in the plane-wave scenario and by running simulations with a commercial full 3 D code. simulations show a good agreement with the experimental data regarding both the efficiency and the pulse spectral profile. The simulated sHG pulse temporal profile presents the characteristic features of the group velocity mismatch broadening in a ‘thick' crystal.

Efficient use of natural resources(e.g.,light,water,and nutrients)can be improved with a tailored developmental program that maximizes the lifetime and fitness of *** plant shoots,a developmental phase represents a time window in which the meristem triggers the development of unique morphological and physiological traits,leading to the emergence of leaves,flowers,and *** developmental phases in plant shoots have been shown to enhance food production in crops,this phenomenon has remained poorly investigated in *** light of recent advances,we suggest that root development occurs in three main phases:root apical meristem appearance,foraging,and *** provide compelling evidence suggesting that these phases are regulated by at least four developmental pathways:autonomous,non-autonomous,hormonal,and *** developmental pathways differentially coordinate organ plasticity,promoting morphological alterations,tissue regeneration,and cell death ***,we suggest how nutritional checkpoints may allow progression through the developmental phases,thus completing the root life *** insights highlight novel and exciting advances in root biology that may help maximize the productivity of crops through more sustainable agriculture and the reduced use of chemical fertilizers.
