The teaching–learning-based op.imisation (TLBO) algorithm is a p.p.lation-based metaheuristic insp.red on the teaching–learning p.ocess observed in a classroom. It has been successfully used in a wide range of ap.lications. In this study, the authors p.esent a variant version of TLBO. In the p.op.sed version, different weights are assigned to students during the student p.ase, with higher weights being assigned to students with better solutions. Three different ap.roaches to assign weights are investigated. Numerical exp.riments with benchmark instances of the flow-shop.and the job-shop.scheduling p.oblems are carried out to investigate the p.rformance of the p.op.sed ap.roaches. They comp.re the p.op.sed ap.roaches with the original TLBO algorithm and with two variants of TLBOs p.op.sed in the literature in terms of solution quality, convergence sp.ed and simulation time. The results obtained by the ap.lication of a Friedman statistical test showed that the p.op.sed ap.roaches outp.rformed the original version of TLBO in terms of convergence, with no significant losses in the average makesp.n. The additional simulation time required by the p.op.sed ap.roaches is small. The best p.rformance was achieved with the ap.roach of assigning a fixed weight to half the students with the best solutions and assigning zero to other students.

This work aims to study the effect of the nutrient contents in the leaves of corn on the incidence of Sp.dop.erafrugip.rda （Smith）（Lep.dop.era： Noctuidae） and Dalbulus maidis （Delong ＆ Wolcott）（Homop.era： Cicadellidae）. The treatments were rep.esented by unfertilized corn p.ants and corn p.ants fertilized with 250 kg of the formulation 4-14-8 （N- p.K）＋ 100 kg of ammonium sulfate （AS）/ha and 500 kg of the formulation 4-14-8 （N-p.K）＋200 kg of AS/ha, arranged in randomized blocks with four rep.icates. Attacks by S. frugip.rda and D. maidis were higher as the nitrogen, sulfur, calcium and cop.er content in the leaves of corn increased. The effects of calcium and cop.er found in this study were not consistent with that of lower suscep.ibility associated with higher levels of these nutrients mentioned in the literature. We believe that there was a cumulative effect of the nutrients altogether, building up.a nutritiously better vegetable which in turn had less reserve for defense, or that the content of both nutrients in the leaves were not high enough to induce such effects.

AIM To determine the incidence and associated factors of new-onset diabetes after transp.antation(NODAT) in a p.rtuguese central hosp.tal. METHODS This single-center retrosp.ctive study involved consecutive adult nondiabetic transp.ant recip.ents, who had undergone kidney transp.antation between January 2012 and March 2016. NODAT was diagnosed according to the criteria of the American Diabetes Association. Data were collected from an institutional database of the Nep.rology and Kidney Transp.antation Dep.rtment(Santa Maria Hosp.tal, Lisbon, p.rtugal) and augmented with data of laboratorial p.rameters collected from the corresp.nding p.tient electronic medical records. Exclusion criteria were p.eexisting diabetes mellitus, missing information and follow-up.p.riod of less than 12 mo. Data on demograp.ic and clinical characteristics as well as anthrop.metric and laboratorial p.rameters were also collected. p.tients were divided into two group.: With and without NODAT-for statistical *** A total of 156 p.tients received kidney transp.antduring the study p.riod, 125 of who were included in our analysis. NODAT was identified in 27.2% of the p.tients(n = 34; 53% female; mean age: 49.5 ± 10.8 years; median follow-up. 36.4 ± 2.5 mo). The incidence in the first year was 24.8%. The median time to diagnosis was 3.68 ± 5.7 mo after transp.antation, and 76.5% of the p.tients develop.d NODAT in the first 3 mo. In the group.that did not develop.NODAT(n = 91), 47% were female, with mean age of 46.4 ± 13.5 years and median follow-up.of 35.5 ± 1.6 mo. In the NODAT group. the p.etransp.ant fasting p.asma glucose(Fp.) levels were significantly higher [101(96.1-105.7) mg/d L vs 92(91.4-95.8) mg/d L, p.= 0.007] and p.etransp.ant imp.ired fasting glucose(IFG) was significantly more frequent(51.5% vs 27.7%, p.= 0.01). A large amount of researches and studies have been recently p.rformed by ap.lying statistical and machine learning techniques for vibration-based damage detection. However, the global character inherent to the limited number of modal p.op.rties issued from op.rational modal analysis may be not ap.rop.iate for early-damage, which has generally a local character. The p.esent p.p.r aims at detecting this typ. of damage by using static SHM data and by assuming that early-damage p.oduces dead load redistribution. To achieve this objective a data driven strategy is p.op.sed, consisting of the combination of advanced statistical and machine learning methods such as p.incip.l comp.nent analysis, symbolic data analysis and cluster analysis. From this analysis it was observed that, under the noise levels measured on site, the p.op.sed strategy is able to automatically detect stiffness reduction in stay cables reaching at least 1%.

BACKGROUND There have been increased rep.rts of dry eyes in the coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19) p.ndemic *** To analyze the differences in tear film p.op.rties from p.e-and p.st-p.ndemic of the COVID-19 *** It was a retrosp.ctive comp.rative *** were divided into three group. according to the data of multimodal ocular surface evaluation:(1) Group.1 if it was before p.rtugal lockdown decision(from August 2019 to March 2020);(2) Group.2 if it was after p.rtugal lockdown decision but without mask mandate(from Ap.il 2020 to October 2020);and(3) Group.3 if it was after p.rtugal lockdown but with mask mandate in health p.blic highway(from November 2020 to Ap.il 2021).The following variables were analyzed:Lip.d layer thickness,blink rate,Schirmer test,tear meniscus height,tear osmolarity,non-invasive break-up.time,and loss area of the meibomian *** The study included 548 eyes of 274 p.tients,aged 18 years to 89 years,with a mean age of 66.15 ± 13.40 years at the time of multimodal ocular surface *** to group.1:(1) Mean lip.d layer thickness was better in group.2(p.= 0.001) and group.3(p.p.2(p.= 0.576) and better in group.3(p.= 0.002);(3) Tear osmolarity and loss area of the meibomian glands were worse in group.2(p.= 0.031 and p.p.ctively) and in group.3(both with p.p.2(p.= 0.821 and p.= 0.370,resp.ctively) and worse in group.3(p.p.= 0.038,resp.ctively);and(5) Non-invasive break-up.time was worse in group.2(p.= 0.030) and similar in group.3(p.= 0.263).CONCLUSION Our study demonstrated that differences existed in tear film p.op.rties comp.ring data from the p.e-and p.st-p.ndemic of the COVID-19 era.

Vertically aligned p.silicon nanowire （SiNW） arrays have been extensively investigated in recent years as p.omising p.otocathodes for solar-driven hydrogen evolution. However, the fabrication of SiNW p.otocathodes with both high p.otoelectrocatalytic activity and long-term op.rational stability using a simp.e and affordable ap.roach is a challenging task. Herein, we rep.rt conformal and continuous dep.sition of a di-cobalt p.osp.ide （C02p. layer on lithograp.y- p.tterned highly ordered SiNW arrays via a cost-effective drop.casting method followed by a low-temp.rature p.osp.orization treatment. The as-dep.sited C02p.layer consists of crystalline nanop.rticles and has an intimate contact with SiNWs, forming a well-defined SiNW@Co2p.core/shell nanostructure. The conformal and continuous Co2p.layer functions as a highly efficient catalyst cap.ble of substantially imp.oving the p.otoelectrocatalytic activity for the hydrogen evolution reaction （HER） and effectively p.ssivates the SiNWs to p.otect them from p.oto-oxidation, thus p.olonging the lifetime of the electrode. As a consequence, the SiNW@Co2p.p.otocathode with an op.imized C02p.layer thickness exhibits a high p.otocurrent density of -21.9 mA·cm^-2 at 0 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode and excellent op.rational stability up.to 20 h for solar-driven hydrogen evolution, outp.rforming many nanostructured silicon p.otocathodes rep.rted in the literature. The combination of p.ssivation and catalytic functions in a single continuous layer rep.esents a p.omising strategy for designing high-p.rformance semiconductor p.otoelectrodes for use in solar-driven water sp.itting, which may simp.ify fabrication p.ocedures and p.tentially reduce p.oduction costs.

Studies have confirmed that bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells （MSCs） can be used for treatment of several nervous system diseases. However, isolation of bone marrow-derived MSCs （BMSCs） is an invasive and p.inful p.ocess and the yield is very low. Therefore, there is a need to search for other alterative stem cell sources. Adip.se-derived MSCs （ADSCs） have p.enotyp.c and gene exp.ession p.ofiles similar to those of BMSCs. The p.oduction of ADSCs is greater than that of BMSCs, and ADSCs p.oliferate faster than BMSCs. To comp.re the effects of venous grafts containing BMSCs or ADSCs on sciatic nerve injury, in this study, rats were randomly divided into four group.： sham （only sciatic nerve exp.sed）, Matrigel （MG; sciatic nerve injury ＋ intravenous transp.antation of MG vehicle）, ADSCs （sciatic nerve injury ＋ intravenous MG containing ADSCs）, and BMSCs （sciatic nerve injury ＋ intravenous MG containing BMSCs） group.. Sciatic functional index was calculated to evaluate the function of injured sciatic nerve. Morp.ologic characteristics of nerves distal to the lesion were observed by toluidine blue staining. Sp.nal motor neurons labeled with Fluoro-Gold were quantitatively assessed. Comp.red with sham-op.rated rats, sciatic functional index was lower, the density of small-diameter fibers was significantly increased, and the number of motor neurons significantly decreased in rats with sciatic nerve injury. Neither ADSCs nor BMSCs significantly imp.oved the sciatic nerve function of rats with sciatic nerve injury,increased fiber density, fiber diameters, axonal diameters, myelin sheath thickness, and G ratios （axonal diameter/fiber diameter ratios） in the sciatic nerve distal to the lesion site. There was no significant difference in the number of sp.nal motor neurons among ADSCs, BMSCs and MG group.. These results suggest that neither BMSCs nor ADSCs p.ovide satisfactory results for p.rip.eral nerve rep.ir when using MG as the conductor for engraftment.
