Maize Seeds Submitted to Thermotherapy and Analyzed by Dynamic Speckle

The quality of the seeds used for sowing is fundamental for a high productivity and quality of the crop. Therefore, eradicating pathogens is essential for the plant to develop in the best possible way. The eradication of those pathogens can be accomplished by means of treatments that consist of the application of substances to the seeds or by performing physical procedures. Thermotherapy is a physical treatment, in which the seed is exposed to a given thermal energy, such as heated air or steam, and can be highly efficient for controlling those pathogens, in addition to reducing environmental damage and costs. The present work aimed to evaluate the efficiency of thermotherapy in two ways： wet heat （water） and dry heat （water vapor）, both at 60 °C, alternating the exposure time to the thermal sources. The treatment with humid heat with a time of exposure of 5 min was the most efficient, since it presented higher germination percentages （83%） and less occurrence of Fusarium sp. （33%）. It was observed that the most efficient thermotherapy is in the control of Fusarium, the most aggressive is for the quality of the seed. The quality of the treatments was evaluated through standard methodologies, according to the rules for seed analysis, such as germination and sanitation tests. Biospeckle laser was used to identify the microbial activity in these seeds, through activity maps generated by laser speckle contrast analysis （LASCA） processing. In this way, the research involving thermotherapy can be done by varying the temperature and the time of exposure to obtain values that considerably reduce the pathogenic agents and preserve the quality, in order to maintain the values of germination and vigor acceptable for commercialization.

Essential role of small bowel capsule endoscopy in reclassification of colonic inflammatory bowel disease type unclassified

AIM To evaluate the role of small bowel capsule endoscopy(SBCE) on the reclassification of colonic inflammatory bowel disease type unclassified(IBDU).METHODS We performed a multicenter, retrospective study including patients with IBDU undergoing SBCE, between 2002 and 2014. SBCE studies were reviewed and the inflammatory activity was evaluated by determining the Lewis score(LS). Inflammatory activity was considered significant and consistent with Crohn's disease(CD) when the LS ≥ 135. The definitive diagnosis during follow-up(minimum 12 mo following SBCE) was based on the combination of clinical, analytical, imaging, endoscopic and histological *** Thirty-six patients were included, 21 females(58%) with mean age at diagnosis of 33 ± 13(15-64) years. The mean follow-up time after the SBCE was 52 ± 41(12-156) mo. The SBCE revealed findings consistent with significant inflammatory activity in the small bowel(LS ≥ 135) in 9 patients(25%); in all of them the diagnosis of CD was confirmed during follow-up. In 27 patients(75%), the SBCE revealed no significant inflammatory activity(LS < 135); among these patients, the diagnosis of Ulcerative Colitis(UC) was established in 16 cases(59.3%), CD in 1 case(3.7%) and 10 patients(37%) maintained a diagnosis of IBDU during follow-up. A LS ≥ 135 at SBCE had a sensitivity = 90%, specificity = 100%, positive predictive value = 100% and negative predictive value = 94% for the diagnosis of *** SBCE proved to be fundamental in the reclassification of patients with IBDU. Absence of significant inflammatory activity in the small intestine allowed exclusion of CD in 94% of cases.

Root Growth, Nutrition and Yield of Maize with Applied Finely Limestone in Surface of Cerrado Soil

The surface applies lime to correcting soil acidity in no-tillage and promotes root development and yield of maize. However, limestone with a particle size smaller than 0.30 mm cannot promote this effect. The aim of this study was to determine the root attributes, nutrition and productivity of maize with limestone ground in no-tillage. The experimental design was randomized blocks with five treatments and four replications. The treatments consisted of different particle sizes of limestone applying superficially to the soil under NT 0) control, without lime, 1) 0.30 mm to 0.20 mm 2) 0.20 mm to 0.10 mm, 3) 0, 10 mm to 0.05 mm 4) 0.05 mm to 0.01 mm. Attributes root, leaf nutrition and grain yield of maize were evaluated in two years 2009 and 2010. The elongation of roots in a 20-40 cm depth was greater when using limestone with particle size between 0.30 mm and 0.20 mm. The root length of maize plants correlated with the levels of Mn in maize leaves. The root development promoted by liming effect was not reflected in the productivity of maize.

The limestone with smaller particle size provides rapid correction of soil acidity. However, the limestone with large particles can promote bigger root growth, and may still have a residual effect on the soil. The aim of this study was to evaluate the residual effect of the application and incorporation of different limestone with a particle size bigger than 0.30 mm in root growth, nutrition and yield of maize in Cerrado soil. A randomized completed block utilized in this experiment, with five treatments and four replications. The grain sizes of dolomitic limestone incorporated into the Oxisol were: 0 (control, no-lime), 2.00-0.82 mm, 0.82-0.56 mm, 0.56-0.30 mm, 0.30-0.20 mm, in doses of 6.5 t·ha-1, 3.9 t·ha-1, 2.6 t·ha-1 and 1.3 t·ha-1 respectively. The limestone applied in introduction no-tillage. The maize were evaluated of root attributes, nutrition and grain yield in two years 2009 and 2010. The use of limestone particle size of 2.00-0.82 mm, and the quantity of 6.5 t·ha-1 applied to the soil and incorporated showed elongation and root growth of maize thin depth of 20-40 cm in the soil. In that, same proposed management of the limestone was the highest maize grain yield in the first year. The rooting characteristics evaluated correlated with leaf Ca and Cu and maizegrain yield.

Evaluation of Maize Seeds Treated with Trichodermil? through Biospeckle

The present work aimed to study the treatment with the bioprotector Trichoderma harzianum on maize seeds immediately after treatment and during *** seeds were analyzed through germination test,vigor tests(cold test,accelerated aging and aerial length),and the viability of the treated seeds was verified through the *** treatment is recommended because approximately 90%of crops intended for human and animal feeding are seed-propagated.A pathogen present in the seed results in increased diseases in the adult plant,in addition to introducing pathogens in other *** the seed treatment can provide better results than chemicals disease control on *** have antagonistic fungi that produce metabolites and enzymes that will avoid the proliferation of phytopathogenic *** the bioprotectors,Trichoderma spp.,used for phytosanitary control of seeds,stands *** tests were carried out with treatment in order to evaluate the physiological potential caused by the treatment with the *** biospeckle experimental runs were performed in parallel with the sanitation *** germination percentages of 93.0%,87.5%,and 87.5%,respectively,showed that they were all above the minimum requirement for commercialization,which is 85%.Analyzing the vigor and sanitation tests,it was verified that the best treatment was on day *** the seeds analyzed through biospeckle,using the laser speckle contrast analysis(LASCA)technique,it was possible to identify fungi activity.

PillCam~ SB3 capsule: Does the increased frame rate eliminate the risk of missing lesions?

Since its emergence in 2000, small bowel capsule endoscopy(SBCE) has assumed a pivotal role as an investigation method for small bowel diseases. The PillCam SB2-ex offers 12 h of battery time, 4 more than the previous version(SB2). Rahman et al recently found that the PillCam SB2-ex has a significantly increased completion rate, although without higher diagnostic yield, compared with the SB2. We would like to discuss these somewhat surprising results and the new potentialities of the PillCam SB3 regarding the diagnostic yield of small bowel studies. PillCam SB3 offers improved image resolution and faster adaptable frame rate over previous versions of SBCE. We recently compared the major duodenal papilla detection rate obtained with PillCam SB3 and SB2 as a surrogate indicator of diagnostic yield in the proximal small bowel. The PillCam SB3 had a significantly higher major duodenal papilla detection rate than the PillCam SB2(42.7% vs 24%, P = 0.015). Thus, the most recent version of the PillCam capsule, SB3, may increase diagnostic yield, particularly in the proximal segments of the small bowel.
