Stem cell therapy is a promising approach to clinical healing in several diseases. A great variety of tissues(bone marrow, adipose tissue, and placenta) arepotentially sources of stem cells. Placenta-derived stem cells(p-scs) are in between embryonic and mesenchymal stem cells, sharing characteristics with both, such as non-carcinogenic status and property to differentiate in all embryonic germ layers. Moreover, their use is not ethically restricted as fetal membranes are considered medical waste after birth. In this context, the present review will be focused on the biological properties, culture and potential cell therapy uses of placental-derived stem cells. Immunophenotype characterization, mainly for surface marker expression, and basic principles of p-sc isolation and culture(mechanical separation or enzymatic digestion of the tissues, the most used culture media, cell plating conditions) will be presented. In addition, some preclinical studies that were performed in different medical areas will be cited, focusing on neurological, liver, pancreatic, heart, muscle, pulmonary, and bone diseases and also in tissue engineering field. Finally, some challenges for stem cell therapy applications will be highlighted. The understanding of the mechanisms involved in the p-scs differentiation and the achievement of pure cell populations(after differentiation) are key points that must be clarified before bringing the preclinical studies, performed at the bench, to the medical practice.

Water Quality of Aroeira River for Use in Irrigation of Vegetable Crops in the Northern Region of the State of Espirito Santo, Brazil

The aim of this study was to evaluate the physical, chemical and microbiological quality of the water of the Aroeira River in the city of Silo Mateus, northern region of Espirito Santo State, Brazil, from April 2012 to March 2013, for use in irrigation of vegetable crops. Five points were selected along the river for analysis of pH, chloride （mg/L C1-）, total hardness （mg/L CaCO3）, dissolved oxygen （mg/L O2）, ammoniacal nitrogen （mg/L N-NH3）, total iron （mg/L Fe）, phosphate/orthophosphate （mg/L PO43-）, turbidity （NTU）, acidity （mg/L CO2）, temperature （℃）, electrical conductivity （dS/m）, as well as microbiological and parasitological analyses. Only point l, located upstream of the points of domestic sewage discharges, is the closest to be considered suitable for use in irrigation of vegetable crop, demonstrating the possible risks to the health of populations who use water with sewage discharges in urban communities for irrigation of vegetable crops.

Stem cell homing, tracking and therapeutic efficiency evaluation for stroke treatment using nanoparticles: A systematic review

BACKGROUND Stroke is the second leading cause of death *** is a real need to develop treatment strategies for reducing neurological deficits in stroke survivors,and stem cell(sc)therapeutics appear to be a promising alternative for stroke therapy that can be used in combination with approved thrombolytic or thrombectomy ***,the efficacy of sc therapy depends on the sc homing ability and engraftment into the injury site over a long period of ***,tracking scs from their niche to the target tissues is a complex *** To evaluate sc migration homing,tracking and therapeutic efficacy in the treatment of stroke using nanoparticles METHODS A systematic literature search was performed to identify articles published prior to November 2019 that were indexed in PubMed and *** following inclusion criteria were used:(1)Studies that used in vivo models of stroke or ischemic brain lesions;(2)Studies of scs labeled with some type of contrast agent for cell migration detection;and(3)Studies that involved in vivo cellular homing and tracking *** A total of 82 articles were identified by indexing in scopus and Pub *** inclusion criteria were applied,35 studies were selected,and the articles were assessed for eligibility;ultimately,only 25 studies were *** of the selected studies used scs from human and mouse bone marrow labeled with magnetic nanoparticles alone or combined with fluorophore *** cells were administered in the stroke model(to treat middle cerebral artery occlusion in 74%of studies and for photothrombotic induction in 26%of studies).Fiftythree percent of studies used xenogeneic grafts for cell therapy,and the migration homing and tracking evaluation was performed by magnetic resonance imaging as well as other techniques,such as near-infrared fluorescence imaging(12%)or bioluminescence assays(12%).CONCLUSION Our systematic review provided an up-to-date evaluation of sc migration hom

This study investigated the protective effects of secondary bacterial metabolites, produced by Pseudomonas sp. (bacterium strain LN), on citrus canker disease caused by Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. citri (Xac 306). The LN bacteria strain was cultured in liquid medium and the supernatant free-cells was treated with methanol (AMF) and ethyl acetate (AEF), respectively, and then the extract was concentrated, filtrated, lyophilized and fractionated by vacuum liquid chromatography (VLC). After VLC, eight fractions were obtained. All fractions’ activity against Xac 306 by agar well diffusion assay and minimum inhibitory concentration but in different concentrationswere tested. Cytotoxicity effects were observed in all fractions in 50 μg·mL-1 concentration. The comet assay demonstrated that the fractions EAF, VLC2 and VLC3 presented no genotoxic effects at tested concentrations. In plants only VLC3 showed significant results (pdence of citrus canker lesions.
