Quantification of theophylline or paracetamol in milk matrices by high-performance liquid chromatography

A simple, accurate and sensitive high-performance liquid chromatography （HPLC） method was developed, validated and applied to the determination of either theophylline or paracetamol in milk-based samples. The method allowed drug quantification in fresh and powdered milk with a relatively short run time of analysis and it was also successfully applied to the quantification of the drugs in solid dosage forms intended for pediatric use. Moreover, the main significant advantages over other published works are the simplicity of the sample preparation, reduced assay time and sample loss. The method meets the International Conference on Harmonization guideline for analytical methods validation regarding specificity, linearity, accuracy, precision, specificity and robustness as required by health authorities and applied by industry while designing and marketing new drug products. The technique encompasses the separation of the analytes with a reverse phase C18 column under isocrafic conditions and UV detection at 272 nm and 243 nm, respectively, for theophylline and paraeetamol. The lower limit of quantification for both drugs was determined as 0.2 μg/mL and the between-batch accuracy was 99.7%. This HPLC method allows quantification of theophylline and paracetamol in milk matrices and it can be applied in the design, development and production of milk-based pediatric dosage forms.

In modern volleyball,the middle blocker is regarded as one of the most important players for the tactical organization,because he is frequently requested for both defensive and offensive *** the block action,the coach must always consider the characteristics of the middle blocker,and his intervention should contemplate the ball tempo and the zone where the opposing attack *** purpose of this study is to understand what the movements are that precede the action of the technical gesture of the *** sample consisted of n=4,895 actions representing 30 footages of games from the 1st male volleyball division in the Portuguese league from season 2013/*** have analyzed the movements that each middle blocker has performed during the pre-block *** have also recorded the ball tempo on the opposing setter and the zone where the opposing attack *** have established that there is a relationship between the movements performed and the attack zones(p≤0.001),as well as between the movements and the type of setting,in each attack zone(p≤0.001 in all of them).This way,we have determined that the Crossover Step is the most frequent movement,followed by the Drive Step.

In modern Volleyball,the block action differentiates the world-class *** purpose of this study is to understand what determines the action of the middle blocker in the moment that precedes the technical procedure of the *** sample consisted of n4895 actions from 24 middle blockers,representing 30 footages of games from the 1st male volleyball division in the Portuguese league on season 2013/*** have also recorded the type of setting(ball tempo)of the opposing setter and the area where the opposing attack *** chi-squared test analysis allowed us to establish that there is a relationship between the actions and the attack zones(x2=109.956;p≤0.001),as well as between the actions and the type of setting,in each attack zone(x2=3,523.678;p≤0.001 in all of them).Thus,we have verified that the action performs block but does not make contact with the ball that is the most *** have also established that there is a strong tendency for the middle blocker to attempt to carry out the block in zones 3 and 4,to the detriment of the attack performed in defensive zone.

Biogas in Brazil： A Governmental Agenda

Environmental issues have become an important aspect in the energy sector and also in governmental policies all over the world. Renewable energy plays a decisive role in a cleaner energy production with less environmental impacts. In this new world scenario, several countries create incentive programs aiming to increase the renewable energy share in their energy balance. Biogas is an interesting example of a smart and rational use of organic waste material. Nevertheless, international experience shows that its production relays mainly on government incentives. This paper investigates what the Brazilian government role is to introduce and promote the biogas industry in the country. We estimate the production of agricultural waste energy using biogas derived from cattle and swine waste and analyze the Brazilian legal and regulatory framework for renewable energy, focusing on biogas production, transport and sale. The results point to an unexplored potential of the use of cattle and swine waste for biogas production in Brazil. However, this potential can only become a reality if some legal and regulatory issues are solved. Brazilian government agenda has to include not only filling the legal and regulatory blanks but also creating incentives for the use of biogas.

Antifungal Activity and Toxicity of the 3,4,5-Trihydroxybenzoic and 3,4,5-Tris(Acetyloxy)Benzoic Acids

Invasive fungal infections have been gaining notoriety due to several factors, mainly their increasing incidence in immunocompromised patients. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the antifungal activity and toxicity of the 3,4,5-trihydroxybenzoic acid (3,4,5-THB) and of its derivative, the 3,4,5-tris(acetyloxy)benzoic acid (3,4,5-TAB). The 3,4,5-THB was purchased and its derivative was obtained by purifying and characterizing performed using semisynthesis reactions (esterification), recrystallization, column chromatography and infrared analytical techniques and nuclear magnetic resonance. Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum lethal concentration (MLC) were determined in order to evaluate the antifungal activity of the compounds against four clinical isolates and four standard strains of Candida sp. and five clinical isolates of dermatophytes, following the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute protocols. The toxicity of the compounds was evaluated by determining the lethal dosis (LD50) using lethality assay of Artemia salina. The most sensitive yeasts to the 3,4,5-THB were C. albicans ATCC 10231 and C. krusei ATCC 6258, both presenting a MIC of 128 μg·mL-1. for Trichophyton sp. and Epidermophyton floccosum, the MIC was 32 μg·mL-1. The 3,4,5-TAB showed a lower inhibitory activity against Candida and dermatophyte species tested. The LD50 of 3,4,5-THB was 222.60 μg·mL-1 and the 3,4,5-TAB showed 481.69 μg·mL-1 of LD50. In conclusion, the 3,4,5-trihydroxybenzoic acid showed antifungal activity against species of medical importance, mainly dermatophytosis-causing fungi, and the 3,4,5-tris(acetyloxy)benzoic acid showed no increasing antifungal activity and toxicity in relation to the original compound.

The authors study, by applying and extending the methods developed by Cazenave(2003), Dias and figueira(2014), Dias et al.(2014), Glassey(1994–1997), Kato(1987), Ohta and Todorova(2009) and Tsutsumi(1984), the Cauchy problem for a damped coupled system of nonlinear Schrdinger equations and they obtain new results on the local and global existence of H^1-strong solutions and on their possible blowup in the supercritical case and in a special situation, in the critical or supercritical cases.

Suiting Dynamic Models of fixed-Bed Catalytic Reactors for Computer-Based Applications

This work investigated the applicability of heterogeneous and pseudo-homogeneous models to predict the dynamic behavior of a fixed-bed catalytic reactor. Some issues concerning the dynamic behavior of the system were discussed, such as the prediction of the inverse response phenomenon. The proposed models (Het- erogeneous I and II and Pseudo-homogeneous) were able to predict with qualitative similarity the main characteristics of the dynamic behavior of a fixed-bed catalytic reactor, including the inverse response. The computational time demanded for the solution of the heterogeneous models was 10 to 50% longer than in the case of the pseudo-homogeneous model, making the use of the former suitable for applications where computational time is not the major restriction (off-line applications). On the other hand, when on-line applications are required, the simplified model (Pseudo-homogeneous model) showed to be a good alternative because this model was able to predict (qualitatively) the dynamics of the reactor using a faster and easier numerical solution.

Historical relationships of areas of endemism of the Brazilian Atlantic rain forest： a cladistic biogeographic analysis of harvestman taxa （Arachnida： Opiliones）

Based on a cladistic biogeographic analysis of 6 species-level phylogenies of harvestman taxa, wesearched for congruence in the historical relationships of 12 areas of endemism of the BrazilianAtlantic Rain forest. We constructed general area cladograms using Primary Brooks ParsimonyAnaJysis （BPA）, BPA of nodes, and paralogy-free subtree analysis. These analyses resulted in 6general area cladograms, that allow to infer a general pattern of the relationships among areas ofendemism from the Brazilian Atlantic Rain forest. Northern areas resulted related basally showingmain disjunctions at the Doce River Valley and Todos os Santos Bay/S^o francisco River *** remaining areas of endemism were included in a southern and a southeastern block, sepa-rated by the Ribeira do Iguape Valley. Incongruence Length Differences tests showed no significantincongruence among the resulting cladograms and other matrix partitions. We concluded that tec-tonism and ancient marine transgressions were the probable processes responsible for the maindisjunctions, whereas Neogene refugia seem to have caused the more recent disjunctions. Thegeneral pattern and redundancy in area relationships suggest a model of main reiterative barriersin diversification at multiple times for the evolution of the Atlantic Rain forest. The renewal of cla-distic biogeography and the search for common biogeographic patterns are discussed.

Background: Pain perception may result from orthodontic treatment and should be considered in clinical management. Its assessment should not be limited to the intensity of perceived pain but should also consider the psychosocial and behavioral aspects involved. Objective: The aims of this study were to adapt and validate the Multidimensional Pain Inventory (MPI) for orthodontic patients, and present a proposal to calculate an overall score of the pain-related aspects and compare these scores with the usual methodology used. Methods: face validity of the MPI was estimated and orthodontic version (MPI-Orthodontic) was developed. factorial validity was evaluated by confirmatory analysis. Convergent and discriminant validity and reliability were estimated. The fit of Second-Order Hierarchical Models was estimated. Concurrent validity of MPI-Orthodontic was evaluated against the Visual Analogue Scale. Invariance of the factorial models was evaluated for independent samples and according to sex and age. Overall score was calculated using the matrix of regression weights and compared to simple arithmetic mean. Results: 507 individuals (63.3% women;age: 26.32 (SD = 11.70) years) participated. for the fit of Part I (psychosocial aspects) of the MPI-Orthodontic, it added correlation between two items and excluded one item;for Part II (behavioral aspects) two items were excluded. The models presented adequate fit to the sample. Reliability was adequate. MPI-Orthodontic presented invariance for independent samples and adequate concurrent and divergent validity. Score obtained with the simple arithmetic mean was overestimated for Part I and underestimated for Part II. Conclusion: MPI-Orthodontic was valid, reliable and invariant for the evaluation of the orthodontic pain. It is recommended to calculate overall weighted scores for pain assessment.

The use of batteries in UAVs （unmanned aerial vehicles） has become common due to some advantages in comparison with internal combustion engines such as weight reduction and better power control. However, in these vehicles it is critical to monitor the RUL （remaining useful life） of the batteries. This information can be used, for instance, as a decision support tool to define which missions could be assigned to the UAV until the next battery recharge. This work presents a methodology to predict the RUL of Li-Po （Lithium-Polymer） batteries. The approach uses an extended Kalman filter and an exponential model for the degradation evolution. The proposed methodology uses time series of battery terminal voltages, assuming that the discharge occurs under a constant current condition. Different discharge current levels were *** results showed that the proposed methodology provides good results, despite its simplicity.
