We read with great interest the study by Way et al.1 published in this journal,which described and compared the acute changes in central arterial stiffness(AS),wave reflections,and central hemodynamics(CH)in response to a bout of high-intensity interval exercise(HIIE)and moderate-intensity continuous exercise(MICE)in adults with *** authors reported a significant reduction in augmentation index(AIx)corrected by a heart rate(HR)of 75 beats/min(AIx@75)and central systolic blood pressure after HIIE,without significant changes in the pulse wave velocity(PWV).In view of this important research topic and our recent contributions to it,we would like to raise some points of discussion that might help to better elucidate the findings observed in the current study,and also suggest pertinent directions to further studies.

To evaluate the adequacy of the study of iron deficiency anemia (IDA) in real life practice prior to referral to a gastroenterology department for small bowel evaluation. METHODSAll consecutive patients referred to a gastroenterology department for small bowel investigation due to iron deficiency anemia, between January 2013 and December 2015 were included. Both patients referred from general practitioners or directly from different hospital departments were selected. Relevant clinical information regarding prior anemia workup was retrospectively collected from medical records. An appropriate pre-referral study was considered the execution of esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) with Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) investigation, colonoscopy with quality standards (recent, total and with adequate preparation) and celiac disease (CD) screening (through serologic testing and/or histopathological investigation). RESULTSA total of 77 patients (58.4% female, mean age 67.1 ± 16.7 years) were included. Most (53.2%) patients were referred from general practitioners, 41.6% from other hospital specialties and 5.2% directly from the emergency department. The mean pre-referral hemoglobin concentration was 8.8 ± 2.0 g/dL and the majority of anemias had microcytic (71.4%) and hypochromic (72.7%) characteristics. 77.9% of patients presented with an incomplete pre-referral study: EGD in 97.4%, with H. pylori investigation in 58.3%, colonoscopy with quality criteria in 63.6%, and CD screening in 24.7%. Patients with an appropriate study at the time of referral were younger (48.7 ± 17.7 vs 72.3 ± 12.3 years, P < 0.001). Small bowel evaluation was ultimately undertaken in 72.7% of patients, with a more frequent evaluation in patients with a quality colonoscopy at referral (78.6% vs 23.8%); P < 0.001 (OR = 11.7, 95%CI: 3.6-38.6). The Egyptia n mon goose (Herpestes ichneumon Linn aeus, 1758) is a medium-sized car nivore that experienced remarkable geographic expansion over the last 3 decades in the Iberian Peninsula. In this study, we investigated the association of species-related and abiotic factors with spleen weight (as a proxy for immunocompete nee) in the species. We assessed the relationship of body con dition, sex, age, seas on, and envir onmental conditi ons with splee n weight established for 508 hunted specimens. Our results indicate that the effects of sex and season outweigh those of all other variables, including body condition. Spleen weight is higher in males than in females, and heavier spleens are more likely to be found in spring, coinciding with the highest period of investment in reproduction due to mating, gestation, birth, and lactation. Coupled with the absence of an effect of body condition, our findi ngs suggest that splee n weight variation in this species is mostly influe need by lifehistory traits linked to reproduction, rather than overall energy availability, winter immunoenhancement, or energy partitioning effects, and prompt further research focusing on this topic.

This work aims to study the effect of the nutrient contents in the leaves of corn on the incidence of Spodopterafrugiperda （Smith）（Lepidoptera： Noctuidae） and Dalbulus maidis （Delong ＆ Wolcott）（Homoptera： Cicadellidae）. The treatments were represented by unfertilized corn plants and corn plants fertilized with 250 kg of the formulation 4-14-8 （N- P-K）＋ 100 kg of ammonium sulfate （AS）/ha and 500 kg of the formulation 4-14-8 （N-P-K）＋200 kg of AS/ha, arranged in randomized blocks with four replicates. Attacks by S. frugiperda and D. maidis were higher as the nitrogen, sulfur, calcium and copper content in the leaves of corn increased. The effects of calcium and copper found in this study were not consistent with that of lower susceptibility associated with higher levels of these nutrients mentioned in the literature. We believe that there was a cumulative effect of the nutrients altogether, building up a nutritiously better vegetable which in turn had less reserve for defense, or that the content of both nutrients in the leaves were not high enough to induce such effects.

We have carried out zircon U-Pb SHRIMP dating and Hf isotope determinations on a biotite paraschist and on a tonalitic orthogneiss of the Yaminué Complex, and re-evaluate this complex in the broader context of the tectonic evolution of the Patagonia composite terrane. In the metasedimentary unit （msuYC）, the youngest detrital zircon dated at 318 ± 5 Ma （Mississippian/Pennsylvanian boundary） indicates a Pennsylvanian （or younger） depositional age. The three main age populations peak at 474, 454 and 374 Ma. Preliminary Hf isotope data for two detrital zircons （447 and 655 Ma） yielded ε（Hf） values of -0.32 and 0.48, indicating that their primary sources contained small amounts of recycled crustal components （of Calymmian age; TDM 1.56 Ga）. Zircons from the orthogneiss （miuYC; intrusive into msuYC） show a crystallization age of 261.3 - 2.7 Ma （Capitanian; late middle Permian） which is broadly coeval with deformation, and Neoarchean-Paleoproterozoic inheritance. Meaningful core-rim relationship between Neoarchean zircon cores and late Permian rims is well defined, indicating the occurrence of Archean crust in this sector of Patagonia. Hf TDM of Permian zircons is mainly Meso-Paleoarchean （2.97-3.35 Ga）, with highly negative e（Hf） values （ca, -33）. Hf TDM of inherited Neoarchean zircon cores is also Meso-Paleoarchean （3.14-3.45 Ga） but more juvenile （ε（Hf） = -0.3）. Hf isotopes reinforce the presence of unexposed ancient crust in this area. Combining geological and isotope data, as well as geophysical models, we identify the Yaminué Complex within the La Esperanza-Yaminué crustal block flanked by two other, distinct crustal blocks： the Eastern block which forms part of the Patagonia terrane sensu stricto, located in the eastern Patagonian region, and the Western block forming part of the Southern Patagonia terrane. Their origins and timing of amalgamation to form the Patagonia composite terrane are also discussed.

BACKGROUND Shoulder maneuvers and magnetic resonance imaging(MRI)are performed to diagnose supraspinatus tendon tears regardless of arthroscopy *** there are many studies on this subject,there is a lack of studies comparing the sensitivity(Se)and specificity(Sp)of shoulder maneuvers and MRI to arthroscopic findings(intact,partial,or full thickness supraspinatus tendon tear).AIM To compare the diagnostic values of shoulder maneuvers with MRI for supraspinatus tendon tears in patients undergoing shoulder *** A total of 199 consecutive patients from four orthopedic centers met the eligibility criteria of shoulder pain persisting for at least four *** were prospectively enrolled in this study from April 2017 to April *** clinical tests(full can,empty can,drop arm,Hawkins’,painful arc,Neer’s sign and resisted external rotation)and MRI were performed,and all were compared with surgical *** can,empty can and resisted external rotation tests were interpreted as positive in the case of pain and/or *** assessed the Se,Sp,accuracy,positive predictive value(PPV)and negative predictive value(NPV),positive and negative likelihood ratio and diagnostic odds ratio for overall,partial and fullthickness supraspinatus *** MRI had the highest Se for overall(0.97),partial(0.91)and full-thickness(0.99)tears;moreover,MRI had the highest NPV:0.90,0.88 and 0.98 for overall,partial and full-thickness tears,*** overall supraspinatus tears,the Se and PPV were:Painful arc(Se=0.85/PPV=0.91),empty can(pain)(Se=0.80/PPV=0.89),full can(pain)(Se=0.78/PPV=0.90),resisted external rotation(pain)(Se=0.48/PPV=0.87),drop arm(Se=0.19/PPV=0.97),Neer’s sign(Se=0.78/PPV=0.93)and Hawkins’(Se=0.80/PPV=0.88).MRI had the highest PPV(0.99).The Hawkin’s test had the highest false positive rate in patients with intact tendons(0.36).The Sp of the empty can and full can(both tests positive for pain and weakness),drop arm and MRI were:0.93,

Vegetables are considered essential for well-balanced diets. The production and marketing of vegetables crops are undergoing continuous change globally. This is mainly due to the growing demands of consumers for safe and healthy vegetables, increased urbanisation of societies, and the growth in scale and influence of supermarkets chains. Horticultural science can respond to many of these challenges through research, breeding and innovation that can seek to gain more efficient methods of crop production, refined post-harvest storage and handling methods, newer and higher value vegetable cultivars and demonstration of their health benefits. Vegetable breeding has to address and satisfy the needs of both the consumer and the producer. Innovation in vegetable breeding depends on specific knowledge, the development and application of new technologies, access to genetic resources, and capital to utilise them. The driving force behind this innovation is acquiring or increasing market share. Access to technology, as well as biodiversity, is essential for the development of new vegetable cultivars. A few multinational corporations, whose vast economic power has effectively marginalized the role of public sector breeding as well as local, small/medium-scale seed companies, dominate the global vegetable seed trade. For most vegetable crops, only a few multinational seed corporations are controlling large part of the world market. This situation makes a growing part of the global vegetable supply dependent on a few seed providers. The multinational seed corporations ensued from merging some small or medium vegetable breeding programs to reduce costs. There may be fewer vegetable breeders in the future and growers will rely on seeds with a narrow genetic base. In order to meet future needs of vegetable breeders it is important that educational programs incorporate rapidly changing new technologies with classical content and methods. Carrot is a root vegetable with carotenoids, flavonoids, polyacetylenes, vitamins, and minerals, all of which possess numerous nutritional and health benefits. Besides lending truth to the old adage that carrots are good for eyes, carotenoids, polyphenols and vitamins present in carrot act as antioxidants, anticarcinogens, and immunoenhancers. Anti-diabetic, cholesterol and cardiovascular disease lowering, anti-hypertensive, hepatoprotective, renoprotective, and wound healing benefits of carrot have also been reported. The cardio- and hepatoprotective, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory, and analgesic effects of carrot seed extracts are also noteworthy. All are discussed in this review article.
