Agreement between IOLMaster 500 and Pentacam HR for keratometry assessment in type 2 diabetic and nondiabetic patients

AIM:To evaluate inter-device agreement of anterior keratometry obtained by the IOLMaster 500 and Pentacam HR in type 2 diabetic and non-diabetic ***:Corneal measurements were sequentially performed in 60 diabetes mellitus(DM)and 48 age and sex-matched controls undergoing cataract *** recorded included flat and steep keratometry,mean keratometry(Km),astigmatism magnitude,axis location,JO and J45 ***-Altman plots and intraclass correlation coefficients were used for examination of *** analyses were performed for astigmatism magnitude,diabetes duration,hemoglobin A1c(HbA1c)levels and diabetic retinopathy(DR)***:Agreement for Km and astigmatism magnitude were considered good and moderate,with 95%limits of agreement(LoA)of-1.09 to 1.23 diopters(D)and-0.83 to 0.86 D in DM group,respectively;and-0.59 to 0.72 D and-0.98 to 0.75 D in non-DM group,*** contrast,the 95%LoA for corneal axis exceeded the clinically relevant margins in both *** the total sample,only 41 eyes(38%)had a smaller than 5-degree *** duration,HbA1c levels and DR stage were not found to significantly affect *** regression showed that higher corneal power(P=0.021)and astigmatism magnitude(P=0.011)were associated with a decreased risk of having a difference in axis location greater than ***:In both groups,IOLMaster and Pentacam agree well for corneal power and moderately for ***,axis location disagreement is frequent in eyes with flatter corneas and small amounts of astigmatism.

Neurodegenerative and neuropsychiatric diseases are increasingly affecting individuals’quality of life,thus increasing their cost to social and health *** diseases have overlapping mechanisms,such as oxidative stress,protein aggregation,neuroinflammation,neurotransmission impairment,mitochondrial dysfunction,and ***,there is no cure for neurodegenerative diseases,and the available therapies have adverse effects and low *** neuropsychiatric disorders,such as depression,the current therapies are not adequate to one-third of the patients,the so-called treatmentresistant ***,searching for new treatments is *** plants appear as a strong alternative and complement towards new treatment protocols,as they have been used for health purposes for thousands of ***,the main goal of this review is to revisit the neuroprotective potential of some of the most predominant medicinal plants(and one fungus)used in traditional Chinese medicine(TCM),focusing on their proven mechanisms of action and their chemical compositions,to give clues on how they can be useful against neurodegeneration progression.

AIM To evaluate the association between polymorphismsin glutathione S transferases(GSTs) and the risk of sporadic colorectal cancer(SCRC), tumor progression and the survival of *** A case-control study of 970 individuals from the Brazilian population was conducted(232 individuals from the case group with colorectal cancer and 738 individuals from the control group without a history of cancer). PCR multiplex and PCR-RFLP techniques were used to genotype the GST polymorphisms. The tumors were categorized according to the TNM classification: tumor extension(T), affected lymph nodes(N), and presence of metastasis(M). Logistic regression, multiple logistic regression and survival analysis were used to analyze the data. The results are presented in terms of odds ratio(OR) and 95% confidence interval(CI). The level of significance was set at 5%(P ≤ 0.05).RESULTS Age equal to or over 62 years(OR = 8.79; 95%CI: 5.90-13.09, P der(OR = 2.91; 95%CI: 1.74-4.37; P < 0.01) were associated with increased risk of SCRC. Analysis of the polymorphisms revealed an association between the GSTM1 polymorphisms and a risk of SCRC(OR = 1.45; 95%CI: 1.06-2.00; P = 0.02), as well as between GSTT1 and a reduced risk of the disease(OR = 0.65; 95%CI: 0.43-0.98; P = 0.04). An interaction between the presence of the wild-type allele of GSTP1 Ile105 Val polymorphism and tobacco consumption on risk of SCRC(OR = 2.33; 95%CI: 1.34-4.05; P = 0.05) was observed. There was an association between the GSTM1 null genotype and the presence of advanced tumors(OR = 2.33; 95%CI: 1.23-4.41; P = 0.009), as well as increased risk of SCRC in the presence of a combination of GSTT1 non-null/GSTM1 null genotypes(OR = 1.50; 95%CI: 1.03-2.19; P = 0.03) and GSTT1 non-null/GSTM1 null/GSTP1 Val~*(OR = 1.85; 95%CI: 1.01-3.36, P = 0.04). This study aimed to show that the physicochemical proprieties obtained by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy （FTIR）, thermogravimetry （TG）, and scanning electronic microscopy （SEM） can be useful tools for evaluating the quality of active pharmaceutical ingredients （APIs） and pharmaceutical products. In addition, a simple, sensitive, and efficient method employing HPLC-DAD was developed for simulta- neous determination of lidocaine （LID）, ciprofloxacin （CFX） and enrofloxacin （EFX） in raw materials and in veterinary pharmaceutical formulations. Compounds were separated using a Gemini Cm （250 mm×4.6 mm, 5μm） Phenomenex column, at a temperature of 25℃, with a mobile phase containing 10 mM of phosphoric acid （pH 3.29）： acetonitrile （85.7：14.3, v/v） and a flow rate of 1.5 mL/min. Physicochemical characterization by TG, FTIR, and SEM of raw materials of LID, CFX, and EFX provided information useful for the evaluation, differentiation, and qualification of raw materials. Finally, the HPLC method was proved to be useful for evaluation of raw material and finished products, besides satisfying the need for an analytical method that allows simultaneous determination of EFX, CFX, and LID, which can also be extended to other matrices and applications.

Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology in the Diagnosis of Canine Cutaneous Transmissible Venereal Tumor—Case Report

Fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) has been widely used in the diagnosis of lesions from various origins, especially neoplastic. The technique is simple, fast, safe, minimally invasive and inexpensive, which allows through the evaluation of cell morphology to establish prognosis, delineate surgical margins, monitor lesion growth, validate indication euthanasia during surgery and monitor chemotherapy protocols. Diagnosis of canine transmissible venereal tumor (TVT) can be accomplished with ease and precision, even to be rated, according to the degree of aggressiveness. The study objective was to demonstrate the effectiveness of the examination in the diagnosis of TVT plasmacytoid type. An eight-month dog presented to the veterinary hospital (HV), faculty of veterinary medicine and animal science, FMVZ, UNESP-Univ Estadual Paulista with clinical suspicion of cutaneous lymphoma. By presenting multiple nodular lesions, FNAC was performed to cytological diagnosis. The tissue showed cells consistent with TVT. The animal was treated, and a total cure was achieved. According to the literature, TVT mainly affects external genitalia of sexually active animals and its transmission is more frequent during intercourse. In addition, animals sexually immature and without contact to the street dogs, hardly have injuries by TVT. In this case, verrucous and ulcerated lesions on the vulva of its mother during pregnancy and childbirth infected the animal. Diffuse and predominant dorsal injuries occurred due to both exfoliation of breast tumor during delivery and immunosuppression of pup at birth, thus favoring an atypical transmission.

AIM To investigate the contribution of polymorphisms in the CYP1A1, CYP2E1 and EPHX1 genes on sporadic colorectal cancer(SCRC) risk. METHODS Six hundred forty-one individuals(227 patients with SCRC and 400 controls) were enrolled in the study. The variables analyzed were age, gender, tobacco and alcohol consumption, and clinical and histopathological tumor parameters. The CYP1A1 *2A, CYP1A1 *2C CYP2E1 *5B and CYP2E1 *6 polymorphisms were analyzed by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism(PCR-RFLP). The EPHX1 Tyr113 His, EPHX1 His139 Arg and CYP1A1 *2C polymorphisms were detected by real-time PCR. Chisquared test and binary logistic regression were used in the statistical analysis. Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) usually develops in the setting of chronic liver disease. In the adequate clinical context, both multiphasic contrast-enhanced CT and magnetic resonance imaging are non-invasive modalities that allow accurate diagnosis and staging of HCC, although the latter demonstrates greater sensitivity and specificity. Imaging criteria for HCC diagnosis rely on hemodynamic features such as hyperenhancement in the arterial phase and washout in the portal or equilibrium phase. However, imaging performance drops considerably for small (dency to exhibit atypical enhancement patterns. In order to improve accuracy in the diagnosis and staging of HCC, particularly in cases of atypical nodules, ancillary features, i.e., imaging characteristics that modify the likelihood of HCC, have been described and incorporated into clinical reports, especially in Liver Imaging Reporting and Data System. In this paper, ancillary imaging features will be reviewed and illustrated.

Introduction: shoulder joint has the greatest range of motion in the human body. The shoulder anatomy promotes high mobility and favors relative sacrifice of articular stability, making it susceptible and more prone to events of instability and dislocation. This review aimed at identifying main complications of surgical treatment of anterior shoulder dislocation. Methodology: This systematic review was conducted according to the International Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyzes (PRISMA) guidelines. Studies which were eligible for this systematic review included: English or Spanish language, studies published from 2000, which mentioned surgical complications of anterior shoulder dislocation in their results, both in open and arthroscopic surgery. Included studies which were required to have at least 1 complication following surgical repair. Only studies from original data were included. Results: We found 228 potentially eligible studies for the survey. Through the inclusion and exclusion criteria and after consensus among reviewers, we chose 9 studies to compose the systematic review. Conclusion: Important information emerges: recurring instability, recurring dislocation, external rotation limitation and arthritis are main surgical complications of anterior shoulder dislocation.
