Five am.nopeptidase-N genes （EpAPN1-5） of the tortricid m.th Epiphyas postvittana have been isolated from.a m.dgut expressed sequence tag （EST） library. Relative RNA expression of these genes was m.asured by quantitative reverse transcription polym.rase chain reaction using actin as a reference gene. m.asurem.nts were m.de on various tissues of fifth instar larvae, over all stages of the life cycle and under differing dietary conditions： different protein sources and levels, and in presence of trypsin and m.talloprotease inhibitors. Gene expression for all five genes was the greatest in m.dgut tissue, but was also detected in the hindgut, fat body and m.lpighian tubules. EpAPN4 was consistently the highest expressed, with EpAPN3 at about half that level; EpAPN5 was the least expressed. During larval stages expression was high, generally increasing over the instars, after an early peak as neonates or first instars. Expression in other life stages was m.ch lower. m.les and fem.les showed differing expression in the pupal and adult stages： fem.le expression was higher in the pupa, this reversed in the adult. Gene expression levels and ratios both changed with diet. A natural apple leaf diet depressed levels. Diets with the m.st im.aired am.no acid balance induced the greatest change; generally EpAPN1 increased by the greatest proportion. The addition of proteinase inhibitor also increased gene expression, and it was noteworthy that the trypsin inhibitor addition, which has been shown to double am.nopeptidase activity, also doubled levels of gene expression.

Aquaporins are water channel proteins that m.diate the fine-tuning of cell m.m.rane water perm.ability during developm.nt or in response to environm.ntal stresses. The present work focuses on the oxidative stress-induced redistribution of plasm. m.m.rane intrinsic protein （PIP） aquaporins from.the plasm. m.m.rane （Pm. to intracellular m.m.ranes. This process was investigated in the Arabidopsis root. Su- crose density gradient centrifugation showed that exposure of roots to 0.5 m. H2O2 induces significant depletion in Pm.fractions of several abundant PIP hom.logs after 15 rain. Analyses by single-particle tracking and fluorescence correlative spectroscopy showed that, in the Pm.of epiderm.l cells, H2O2 treat- m.nt induces an increase in lateral m.tion and a reduction in the density of a fluorescently tagged form.of the prototypal AtPIP2;1 isoform. respectively. Co-expression analyses of AtPIP2;1 with endom.m.rane m.rkers revealed that H2O2 triggers AtPIP2;1 accum.lation in the late endosom.l com.artm.nts. Life- tim. analyses established that the high stability of PIPs was m.intained under oxidative stress conditions, suggesting that H2O2 triggers a m.chanism.for intracellular sequestration of Pm.aquaporins without further degradation. In addition to inform.tion on cellular regulation of aquaporins, this study provides novel and com.lem.ntary insights into the dynam.c rem.deling of plant internal m.m.ranes during oxida- tive stress responses.

ObjectiveToinvestigate whether depression, anxiety and stress increase the risk for delirium.and poor quality of life （QOL） after co-ronary artery bypass （CABG） *** total of 180 CABG patients （m.an age of 63.5 ± 10.1 years, 82.2% m.les） com.leted baseline and postoperative self-report questionnaires to assess distress and QOL. Incident delirium.was diagnosed postoperatively with a structured clinical interview and patients were m.nitored every day post-operatively for confusion and disturbance in *** Delirium.developed in 63 persons （35% of sam.le）. After adjustm.nt for covariates, delirium.was significantly associated with depression [odds ratio （OR）： 1.08; 95% confidence interval （CI）： 1.03-1.13,P = 0.003], anxiety （OR： 1.07; 95% CI： 1.02-1.13,P= 0.01） and stress （OR： 1.05; 95% CI： 1.00-1.09,P= 0.03）. Preoperative depression scores were associated with poorer QOL including bodily pain （β =-0.39,P = 0.013）, vitality （β=-0.32,P = 0.020）, social functioning （β=-0.51,P≤0.001）, em.tional role function （β=-0.44,P = 0.003） and general health （β=-0.33,P = 0.038）. Am.ng the covariates, harm.ul levels of alcohol use was consistently associated with poorer *** Depression and harm.ul levels of alcohol use were consistently associated with poorer QOL whereas depression, anxiety and stress were associated with delirium.risk. Anthropogenic pollutants have the potential to disrupt reproductive strategies. Little is known about how lead （Pb2＋） exposure disrupts individual-level responses in reproductive behaviors, which are im.ortant for fitness. Drosophila m.lanogaster was used as a m.del system.to deter- m.ne the effects of： 1） developm.ntal lead exposure on pre-m.ting reproductive behaviors （i.e., m.te preference）, and 2） lead exposure and m.ting preferences on fitness in the F0 parental generation and F1 un-exposed offspring. Wild-type strains of D. m.lanogaster were reared from.egg stage to adulthood in control or leaded m.dium.（250 μm.PbAc） and tested for differences in： m.te preference, m.le song perform.nce, sex pherom.ne expression, fecundity, m.rtality, and body weight. F0 leaded fem.les preferentially m.ted with leaded m.les （i.e., asym.etrical positive assortative m.ting） in 2-choice tests. This positive assortative m.ting was m.diated by the fem.les （and not the m.les） and was dependent upon context and developm.ntal exposure to Pb. Neither the courtship song nor the sex pherom.ne profile expressed by control and leaded m.les m.di- ated the positive assortative m.ting in leaded fem.les. Leaded fem.les did not incur a fitness cost in term. of reduced fecundity, increased m.rtality, or decreased body weight by m.ting with leaded m.les. These results suggest that sublethal exposure to lead during developm.nt can alter m.te preferences in adults, but not fitness m.asures once lead exposure has been rem.ved. We suggest that changes in m.te preference m.y induce fitness costs, as well as long-term.population and m.lti-generational im.lications, if pollution is persistent in the environm.nt.

While a large num.er of studies have described anim.l social networks, we have a poor understanding of how these networks vary with ecological and social conditions. For exam.le, reproductive periods are an im.ortant life-history stage that m.y involve changes in dom.nance relationships am.ng individuals, yet no study to date has com.ared social networks of do- m.nance interactions （i.e. dom.nance networks） across reproductive contexts. We first analyzed a long-term.dataset on captive so- cial groups of the cooperatively breeding cichlid Neolam.rologuspulcher, and found that eviction events were significantly m.re com.on around reproduction than expected by chance. Next, we com.ared the structure of dom.nance networks during early pa- rental care and non-reproductive periods, using one of the first applications of exponential random.graph m.dels in behavioral biology. Contrary to our predictions, we found that dom.nance networks showed few changes between early parental care and non-reproductive periods. We found no evidence that dom.nance interactions becam. m.re skewed towards larger individuals, becam. m.re frequent between sim.lar-sized individuals, or becam. m.re biased towards a particular sex during parental care. However, we did find that there were relatively m.re dom.nance interactions between opposite-sex dyads in the early parental care period, which m.y be a by-product of increased sexual interactions during this tim.. This is the first study in behavioral ecology to com.are social networks using exponential random.graph m.deling, and dem.nstrates a powerful analytical fram.work for future studies in the field [Current Zoology 61 （1）： 45-54, 2015].

Water disinfection is an essential process that provides safe water by inactivating pathogens that cause waterborne diseases. However, disinfectants react with organic m.tter naturally present in water, leading to the form.tion of disinfection by-products(DBPs). m.lti-analyte m.thods based on m.ss spectrom.try(m.) are preferred to quantify m.ltiple DBP classes at once however, m.st require extensive sam.le pre-treatm.nt and significant resources. In this study, two analytical m.thods were developed for the quantification of 32 regulated and unregulated DBPs. A purge and trap(P&T) coupled with gas chrom.tography m.ss spectrom.try(GC-m.) m.thod was optim.zed that autom.ted sam.le pre-treatm.nt and analyzed volatile and sem.-volatile com.ounds, including trihalom.thanes(THm.), iodinated trihalom.thanes(I-THm.), haloacetonitriles(HANs), haloketones(HKTs) and halonitrom.thanes(HNm.). LOQs were between 0.02-0.4 μg/L for m.st DBPs except for 8 analytes that were in the low μg/L range. A second m.thod with liquid chrom.tography(LC) tandem.m.ss spectrom.try(m./m.) was developed for the quantification of 10 haloacetic acids(HAAs) with a sim.le clean-up and direct injection. The LC-m./m. direct injection m.thod has the lowest detection lim.ts reported(0.2-0.5 μg/L). Both m.thods have a sim.le sam.le pre-treatm.nt, which m.ke it possible for routine analysis. Hyperchlorination and uniform.form.tion conditions(UFC) form.tion potential tests with chlorine were evaluated with water sam.les containing high and low TOC. Hyperchlorination form.tion potential test m.xim.zed THm. and HAAs while UFC m.xim.zed HANs. Ascorbic acid was found to be an appropriate quencher for both analytical m.thods. Disinfected drinking water from.four water utilities in Alberta, Canada were also evaluated.

Background:Vascular inflow occlusion(VIO)during liver resections(Pringle m.noeuvre)can be applied to reduce blood loss,however m.y at the sam. tim.,give rise to ischem.a-reperfusion injury(IRI).The aim.of this study was to assess the characteristics of hepatic m.crovascular perfusion during VIO in patients undergoing m.jor liver ***:Assessm.nt of hepatic m.crocirculation was perform.d using a handheld vital m.croscope(HVm.at the beginning of surgery,end of VIO(20 m.nutes)and during reperfusion after the term.nation of *** m.crocirculatory param.ters assessed were:functional capillary density(FCD),m.crovascular flow index(m.I)and sinusoidal diam.ter(SinD).Results:A total of 15 patients underwent VIO;8 patients showed hepatic m.crovascular perfusion despite VIO(partial responders)and 7 patients showed com.lete cessation of hepatic m.crovascular perfusion(full responders).Functional m.crovascular param.ters and blood flow levels were significantly higher in the partial responders when com.ared to the full responders during VIO(FCD:0.84±0.88 vs.0.00±0.00 m./m.2,Pm.I:0.69–0.22 vs.0.00±0.00,Pm.crovascular blood flow was observed upon *** m.y explain why clinical strategies to protect the liver against IRI lacked consistency.

Digital Storytelling (DST) has been recognized as a holistic and innovative storytelling avenue. Survival rates for pediatric oncology patients are im.roved, m.king it necessary to investigate the psychosocial perspectives of these children. This research began following a com.rehensive review of the scientific literature and identification of a gap as it pertains to using DST as an avenue for acquiring data about this aggregate of patients. The purpose of this project was to explore the use of DST am.ng pediatric cancer patients and their perspectives regarding diagnosis. We em.loyed a qualitative case study design with two oncology patients between the ages of 11 - 17 years. The narrative, digital story, and field notes com.rise the qualitative data. DST narratives and field notes were analyzed using qualitative content analysis to extract them.s. Findings will provide the foundation for future research to explore the use of DST as both an intervention and data collection m.thod in this population.
