Representative elementary volume analysis of polydisperse granular packings using discrete element method

The representative elementary volume （REV） for three-dimensional polydisperse granular packings was determined using discrete element method simulations. Granular mixtures of various sizes and particle size distributions were poured into a cuboid chamber and subjected to uniaxial compression, Findings showed that the minimum REV for porosity was larger compared with the REV for parameters such as coordination number, effective elastic modulus, and pressure ratio. The minimum REV for porosity and other parameters was found to equal 15,10, and 5 times the average grain diameter, respectively. A study of the influence of sample size on energy dissipation in random packing of spheres has also confirmed that the REV size is about 15 times the average grain diameter. The heterogeneity of systems was found to have no effect on the REV for the parameters of interest for the narrow range of coefficient of uniformity analyzed in this paper. As the REV approach is commonly applied in both experimental and numerical studies, determining minimum REV size for polydisperse granular packings remains a crucial issue.

Effect of particle polydispersity on micromechanical properties and energy dissipation in granular mixtures

A series of numerical tests was conducted to study the micromechanical properties and energy dissipation in polydisperse assemblies of spherical particles subjected to uniaxial compression. In general, distributed particle size assemblies with standard deviations ranging from 0% to 80% of the particle mean diameter were examined. The microscale analyses included the trace of the fabric tensor, magnitude and orien- tation of the contact forces, trace of stress, number of contacts and degree of mobilization of friction in contacts between particles. In polydisperse samples, the average coordination numbers were lower than in monodisperse assemblies, and the mobilization of friction was higher than in monodisperse assemblies due to the non-uniform spatial rearrangement of spheres in the samples and the smaller displacements of the particles. The effect of particle size heterogeneity on both the energy density and energy dissipation in systems was also investigated.

Effect of the C:N:P ratio on the denitrifying dephosphatation in a sequencing batch biofilm reactor(SBBR)

Hydroxyapatite ((Ca10（PO4）)6（OH）2, abbreviated as HA) plays a crucial role in implantology, dentistry and bone surgery. Due to its considerable similarity to the inorganic fraction of the mineralized tissues（bones, enamel and dentin）, it is used as component in many bone substitutes, coatings of metallic implants and dental materials. Biomaterial engineering often takes advantage of HA capacity for partial ion substitution because the incorporation of different ions in the HA structure leads to materials with improved biological or physicochemical properties. The objective of the work is to provide an overview of current knowledge about apatite materials substituted with silicon ions. Although the exact mechanism of action of silicon in the bone formation process has not been fully elucidated, research has shown beneficial effects of this element on bone matrix mineralization as well as on collagen type I synthesis and stabilization. The paper gives an account of the functions of silicon in bone tissue and outlines the present state of research on synthetic HA containing silicate ions（Si-HA）. Finally, methods of HA production as well as potential and actual applications of HA materials modified with silicon ions are discussed.

Development of a homogenous assay based on fluorescent imprinted nanoparticles for analysis of nitroaromatic compounds

Herein we describe the development of a homogeneous assay for the detection of 4-nitroaniline(4-NA)and 2,4-dinitroaniline(2,4-diNA).Thisassay relies on fluorescent molecularly imprinted nanoparticles(nano MIPs)which,upon interaction with the target analytes,generate areduction in fluorescence emission intensity(quenching).This is due to a resp on sive fluorescent monomer(N-2-propenyl-(5-dimethylamino)-1-naphthalene sulphonamide)employed in the manufacture of the nanoMIPs which,by virtue of the imprinting process,is capable of selectiveinteraction with the target an alyte,thus giving rise to a quenching *** experiments showed excellent recognition propertiestoward the target *** optimal conditions,the fluorescence intensity of these nano MIPs decreased as the concentration of theimprinted analyte increased from 10 nM to 2.71 pM.A linear relation between the negative logarithm of 4-NA or 2,4-diNA concentrations and the fluorescence intensity for both nanosystems was found(R^2=0.991 and R^2=0.9895),with excellent sensitivity(limit of detection(LOD)=7 and 6 nM,respectively).Furthermore,both nanosystems have been successfully applied for detection of 4-NA or 2,4-diNA in tap water,withrecoveries between 90%to 100.6%and 92%to 100.3%,*** to the versatility of the imprinting process,this nanosystemholds the potential for further development of several optical sensors for many other compounds.

Effect of number of granulometric fractions on structure and micromechanics of compressed granular packings

The role of number of grain size fractions on structural and mechanical properties of uniaxially com- pressed granular packings with a uniform particle size distribution in terms of number of particles and with various particle size dispersities was studied using the discrete element method. The study addressed packing density, coordination number, contact forces, global stress, and energy dissipation in assemblies composed of frictional spheres. Packing density was found to change with increasing num- ber of granulometric fractions in mixtures with a small ratio of the diameters of the largest to smallest particles. Results indicated a certain value of particle size ratio below which the number of particle size fractions strongly affected packing density. The average coordination number decreased with increasing number of fractions. Detailed analysis of the effect of particle size dispersity on mechanical coordination number, including particles with no less than four contacts, revealed that, contrary to the average coordi- nation number, the mechanical coordination number increased with increasing ratio of the diameters of the largest to smallest particles in the sample. The composition of polydisperse samples strongly affected stress distribution and energy dissipation in granular packings.
