BACKGROUND Neurogenic heterotopic ossification is an acquired serious complication described in patients with central nervous system disorders and defined by bone formation in non-osseous *** SUMMARY We present an unusual case of a 13-yr-old boy presenting with hip pain and severe gait impairment 5 mo after the diagnosis of hemiplegia following a spontaneous intracerebral *** tomography revealed bilateral heterotopic ossification of both the paretic and the non-paretic limbs,with entrapment of the sciatic *** choice of surgical or nonsurgical management of such patients depends on the timing of diagnosis,the symptoms,and the extent of maturation of the ossified *** resection remains the only treatment with proven,evidence-based *** choice of surgical approach largely depends on the location of the ossified *** We believe the plane of dissection presented is a satisfactory option for resection of a posteromedial mass and sciatic nerve release.

Invasive species are a major threat to island biodiversity,and their eradications have substantially contributed to the conservation of island ***,the consequences of eradications on the trophic ecology of native taxa are largely ***,we used the eradication of invasive black rats Rattus rattus and European rabbits Oryctolagus cuniculus from the Berlenga Island,in the western coast of Portugal,as a whole-ecosystem experiment to investigate the effects of the eradication of invasive mammals on the trophic niche and body dimensions of the island-restricted Berlenga wall lizard Podarcis carbonelli berlengensis over a 2-year *** results suggest an expansion of the isotopic niche and an intensification of the sexual dimorphism of the lizard following mammal ***,we found considerable variability in isotopic niche across the island and detected evidence of sex-specific and season-modulated nutritional requirements of this threatened *** findings support that the eradication of 2 of the planets most problematic invasive vertebrates led to changes in the lizard trophic niche and sexual dimorphism in just 2 *** suggests that the ecological pressuresfor example,prey availability and habitat structureto which lizards are exposed have substantially changed *** study emphasizes the scientific value of island eradications as experiments to address a wide range of ecological questions and adds to the increasing body of evidence supporting substantial conservation gains associated with these restoration interventions.

N-Hydroxypipecolic acid(NHP)is a signaling molecule crucial for systemic acquired resistance(SAR),a systemic immune response in plants that provides long-lasting and broad-spectrum protection against secondary pathogen *** identify negative regulators of NHP biosynthesis,we performed a forward genetic screen to search for mutants with elevated expression of the NHP biosynthesis gene FLAVIN-DEPENDENT MONOOXYGENASE 1(FMO1).Analysis of two constitutive expression of FMO1(cef)and one induced expression of FMO1(ief)mutants revealed that the AIPP3–PHD2–CPL2 protein complex,which is involved in the recognition of the histone modification H3K27me3 and transcriptional repression,contributes to the negative regulation of FMO1 expression and NHP *** study suggests that epigenetic regulation plays a crucial role in controlling FMO1 expression and NHP levels in plants.

Prostate cancer （PCa） incidence and mortality have decreased in recent years. Nonetheless, it remains one of the most prevalent cancers in men, being a disquieting cause of men＇s death worldwide. Changes in many cell signaling pathways have a predominant role in the onset, development, and progression of the disease. These include prominent pathways involved in the growth, apoptosis, and angiogenesis of the normal prostate gland, such as an- drogen and estrogen signaling, and other growth factor signaling pathways. Understanding the foundations of PCa is leading to the discovery of key molecules that could be used to improve patient management. The ideal scenario would be to have a panel of molecules, preferably detectable in body fluids, that are specific and sensitive biomarkers for PCa In the early stages, androgen deprivation is the gold standard therapy. However, as the cancer progresses, it even- tually becomes independent of androgens, and hormonal therapy fails. For this reason, androgen-independent PCa is still a major therapeutic challenge. By disrupting specific protein interactions or manipulating the expression of some key molecules, it might be possible to regulate tumor growth and metastasis formation, avoiding the systemic side effects of current therapies. Clinical trials are already underway to assess the efficacy of molecules specially designed to target key proteins or protein interactions. In this review, we address that recent progress made towards under- standing PCa development and the molecular pathways underlying this pathology. We also discuss relevant molecular markers for the management of PCa and new therapeutic challenges.

AIM To evaluate the incidence of anastomotic strictures after intestinal resection in Crohn's disease(CD), demonstrate long-term efficacy and safety of endoscopic balloon dilation(EBD) in CD strictures and its impact on the diagnosis of subclinical postoperative endoscopic recurrence. METHODS Retrospective single tertiary center study based on prospectively collected data between 2010 and 2015including anastomotic and non-anastomotic strictures. RESULTS29% of 162 CD patients included developed an anastomotic stricture. 43 patients with anastomotic strictures and 37 with non-anastomotic strictures underwent EBD; technical success was 97.7% and 100%, respectively, however, 63% and 41% needed repeat dilation during the 4.4-year follow-up. Longer periods between surgery and index colonoscopy and higher lactoferrin levels were associated with the presence of stricture after surgery. Calprotectin levels > 83.35 μg/g and current or past history of smoking were associated with a shorter time until need for dilation(HR = 3.877, 95%CI: 1.480-10.152 and HR = 3.041, 95%CI: 1.213-7.627). Anastomotic strictures had a greater need for repeat dilation(63% vs 41%, P = 0.047). No differences were found between asymptomatic and symptomatic cohorts. Disease recurrence diagnosis was only possible after EBD in a third of patients. CONCLUSION EBD is an effective and safe alternative to surgery, with a good short and long-term outcome, postponing or even avoiding further surgery. EBD may allow to diagnose disease recurrence in patients with no clinical signs/biomarkers of disease activity.

Following the 2008 global economic crisis and rolling out of austerity measures, elites of the state seem to have become a ＂political species＂ of their own, now under threat of extinction. The study of the health and defense policy reforms in France and the US during the 1990s and 2000s shows that far from disappearing, the influence of state elites is being strategically reconfigured to defend some sector-specific policies. Similarly to those ＂custodians of policy＂ dear to P. Selznick, small groups of elites are gaining expertise within strategic sectors of public policy; they are also making the need to control the cost of public spending their royal battle, in order to safeguard what they see as the crucial role of the public good. In the American cases study, the image of the ＂revolving door＂, which encapsulates the idea of professional mobility back and forth from the private to the public sector, implies a fragmented state, open to external pressures of social groups. We document career and professional trajectories marked by a strong commitment to a given policy area. Circulation, we note, is frequent between these positions in the public sector. While these findings do not in and of themselves allow us to fully assess the influence wielded by these elites, this study identifies the social and political resources and forms of specialization which predispose them to play important roles in shaping public policy. For the past 30 years, the question of varieties of liheralisation has been put forward as an explanatory factor for a wide range of public policies （Schrnidt ＆ Thatcher, 2013; Thelen, 2014）. In this perspective, numerous authors have theorised the dismantling of democratic states and the weakening of public authority that would follow （Suleiman, 2003; Fukuyama, 2004; Bez^s, 2009; Bonneli ＆ Pelletier, 2010; Lodge, 2013）. Large-area polycrystalline diamond(PCD)coatings are important for fields such as thermal management,optical windows,tribological moving mechanical assemblies,harsh chemical environments,biological sensors,*** plasma chemical vapor deposition(MPCVD)is a standard technique to grow high-quality PCD films over large area due to the absence of contact between the reactive species and the filament or the chamber ***,the existence of temperature gradients during growth may compromise the desired uniformity of the final diamond *** the present work,a thick PCD coating was deposited on a 100-mm silicon substrate inside a 915-MHz reactor;the temperature gradient resulted in a non-uniform diamond *** attempt was made to relate the local temperature variation during deposition and the different properties of the final *** was found that there was large instability inside the system,in terms of substrate temperature(as high asΔT=212℃),that resulted in a large dispersion of the diamond coating’s final properties:residual stress(-15.8 GPa to+6.2 GPa),surface morphology(octahedral pyramids with(111)planes to cubo-octahedrals with(100)flat top surfaces),thickness(190μm to 245μm),columnar growth of diamond(with appearance of variety of nanostructures),nucleation side hardness(17 GPa to 48 GPa),quality(Raman peak FWHM varying from 5.1 cm^(-1) to 12.4 cm^(-1) with occasional splitting).This random variation in properties over large-area PCD coating may hamper reproducible diamond growth for any meaningful technological application.

Microplastics are increasingly recognized as a factor of global change. By altering soil inherentproperties and processes, ripple-on effects on plants and their symbionts can be ***, interactions with other factors of global change, such as drought, can influence theeffect of microplastics. We designed a greenhouse study to examine effects of polyester microfibers,arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi and drought on plant, microbial and soil responses. We found thatpolyester microfibers increased the aboveground biomass of Allium cepa under well-watered anddrought conditions, but under drought conditions the AM fungal-only treatment reached the highestbiomass. Colonization with AM fungi increased under microfiber contamination, however, plantbiomass did not increase when both AM fungi and fibers were present. The mean weight diameter ofsoil aggregates increased with AM fungal inoculation overall but decreased when the system wascontaminated with microfibers or drought stressed. Our study adds additional support to themounting evidence that microplastic fibers in soil can affect the plant–soil system by promoting plantgrowth, and favoring key root symbionts, AM fungi. Although soil aggregation is usually positivelyinfluenced by plant roots and AM fungi, and microplastic promotes both, our results show that plasticstill had a negative effect on soil aggregates. Even though there are concerns that microplastic mightinteract with other factors of global change, our study revealed no such effect for drought.

The antibacterial potential of silver nanoparticles（AgNPs） resulted in their increasing incorporation into consumer,industrial and biomedical ***,human and environmental exposure to AgNPs（either as an engineered product or a contaminant）supports the emergent research on the features conferring them different toxicity *** this study,30 ran AgNPs coated with citrate or poly（ethylene glycol）（PEG） were used to assess the influence of coating on the effects produced on a human hepatoma cell line（HepG2）,namely in terms of viability,apoptosis,apoptotic related genes,cell cycle and cyclins gene *** types of coated AgNPs decreased cell proliferation and viability with a similar toxicity *** the concentrations used（11 and 5 μg/mL corresponding to IC50 and-IC10 levels,respectively） the amount of cells undergoing apoptosis was not significant and the apoptotic related genes BCL2（anti-apoptotic gene）and BAX（pro-apoptotic gene） were both ***,both AgNPs affected HepG2 cell cycle progression at the higher concentration（11 μg/mL） by increasing the percentage of cells in S（synthesis phase） and G2（Gap 2 phase） *** the cell-cycle related genes,the expression of cyclin B1 and cyclin E1 genes were ***,this work has shown that citrate- and PEG-coated AgNPs impact on HepG2 apoptotic gene expression,cell cycle dynamics and cyclin regulation in a similar *** research is needed to determine the properties that confer AgNPs at lower toxicity,since their use has proved helpful in several industrial and biomedical contexts.
