Germline activating variants in WWP1,which encodes an e3 ubiquitin ligase that antagonizes PTeN tumor suppressive function,have been proposed as an alternative mechanism of PTeN inactivation in PTeN-hamartoma-tumor syndrome(PHTS)-like patients with wildtype PTeN.1 More specifically,heterozygous,potentially activating wwP1 variants were first identified by Lee et al in patients affected with gastrointestinal oligopolyposis,including adenomatous,hyperplastic/serrated,and hamartomatous polyps,and occasionally with colorectal cancer(Table 1).Subsequently,based on the PHTS phenotypic features,wWP1 mutational screening was performed in patients with thyroid nodules,2 or normocephalic autism spectrum disorder(ASD),3 where germline WWP1 variants were also identified(Table S1).

Small water bodies are critical for maintaining freshwater biodiversity,but are among the least investigated aquatic *** examined physical and chemical variables at two reaches in Arroyo Tambillos,a small,high-elevation Andean stream,in NW Mendoza province,Argentina,across four seasons to examine how local factors and seasonality affected the structure of the macroinvertebrate *** Arroyo Tambillos community was numerically dominated by ephemeropterans(mainly Massartellopsis irarrazavali)while the dipteran Chironomidae were the most species *** macroinvertebrate abundance was highest in summer,driven mainly by taxa that were secondary in dominance(Austrelmis *** Andesiops peruvianus),while richness did not differ between ***,benthic composition was different in Fall 2013(March)compared to other seasons,largely because of the increased abundance of *** correspondence analysis discriminated Chironomidae species distributions in Fall 2013 by substrate type(i.e.,big and small boulder substrate).By contrast,discharge,velocity,and depth were the variables which most affected the macroinvertebrate abundance and *** to our expectations,most community changes observed occurred in fall instead of ***-kryal stream communities like the one described here have become increasingly important for conserving mountain stream biodiversity as anthropogentic impacts and climate change increasingly impact lower stream ***,monitoring high-altitude streams like the Arroyo Tambillos may be critical for preventing the future loss of unique and sensitive stream biota.

This study sought to contribute to an improved understanding of soil erosion and redistribution on Mediterranean agricultural land, where traditional soil conservation practices have been applied over millennia to provide effective protection of cultivated land. The study was undertaken in the Na Borges catchment, a groundwater-dominated lowland limestone basin (319 km2), located in the northeastern part of Mallorca, Spain. The average sediment yield from the basin, based on river sediment load data, is e 137Cs technique was used to quantify soil redistribution rates over the past 40 years and to identify the key factors involved in soil erosion and redistribution processes. To estimate erosion and deposition rates and to elucidate the main factors affecting soil redistribution, samples were collected from six slope transects representative of the local land use and slope gradients and the presence or absence of soil conservation practices. A mass balance and a profile distribution conversion model were used for cultivated areas and areas of natural vegetation, respectively, to derive point estimates of the soil redistribution rates from the 137Cs inventories measured for individual soil bulk cores. In areas without soil conservation practices, the estimated mean soil erosion rates ranged from 12.7 to 26.4 t/ha·yr, which correspond to the slight and moderate erosion classes. The erosivity of Mediterranean climatic conditions combined with the influence of agricultural practices and slope gradient on soil erosion, represent the main factors responsible for the variation of soil losses documented for the cultivated land located in downslope areas, in the absence of soil conservation practices. Deposition dominated for those transects affected by soil conservation practices, with rates ranging between 18.8 and 96.6 t/ha·yr. Verification of the 2019 GloSea5 Seasonal Tropical Cyclone Landfall Forecast for east China

A prototype climate service was developed and trialled in early 2019 to provide seasonal forecast of the June–July–August(JJA) tropical cyclone(TC) landfall risk for the east China region ahead of the forthcoming typhoon *** forecasts were produced in both March and April 2019 and a final forecast was released to the China Meteorological Administration(CMA) on 1 May 2019. The trial service was produced by using the Met Office Global Seasonal forecast system(GloSea5), and a forecast of the western Pacific subtropical high(WPSH) index was used to infer the TC landfall risk based on a simple linear regression between historical model WPSH indices and observed TC landfalls in east China. The forecast method shows significant skill for forecasting the JJA TC landfall risk in east China with up to three-month lead time, with the greatest skill for predictions initialized in May. The 2019 forecast provided good guidance of the near-average TC activity observed in east China in JJA 2019. Success of the forecast adds confidence to an improved climate service ahead of the 2020 typhoon season.

Background: Despite their utility in accessing ambulatory movement, pedometers have not been used consistently to monitor physical activity in U.S. surveillance systems. This study was designed to determine the feasibility of using pedometers to assess daily steps taken in a sub-sample of adults from Maricopa County who completed the 2014 Arizona Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System ***: Respondents were sent an Omron HJ324 U pedometer, a logbook to record steps taken, and a walking questionnaire. The pedometer was worn for 7 days. Feasibility was assessed for acceptability(interest in study), demand(procedures followed correctly), implementation(time to complete study), and practicality(cost).Results: Acceptability was modest with 23.9%(830/3476) agreeing to participate. Among those participating(92.9%; 771/830), 50.1%(386/771)returned the logbook. Demand was modest with 39.3%(303/771) of logbooks returned with valid data. Implementation represented 5 months to recruit participants. The cost to obtain valid step-count data was USD61.60 per person. An average of 6363 ± 3049 steps/day were taken with most participants classified as sedentary(36.0%) or low active(35.6%).Conclusion: The feasibility of using pedometers in a state-based surveillance system is modest at best. Feasibility may potentially be improved with easy-to-use pedometers where data can be electronically downloaded.

The Process and Benefits of Developing Prototype Climate Services——examples in China

Changes in climate pose major challenges to society, and so decision-makers need actionable climate information to inform their planning and policies to make society more resilient to climatic changes. Climate services are being developed to provide such actionable climate information. The successful development and use of climate services benefits greatly from close engagement between developers, providers, and users of the services. The Climate Science for Service Partnership China(CSSP China) is a China–UK collaboration fostering closer engagement between climate scientists, providers of climate services, and users of climate services. We describe the process within CSSP China of co-developing climate services through trials with users to revise and improve a prototype. examples are provided covering various scientific capabilities, user needs, and parts of China. The development process is yielding many benefits, such as increasing the engagement between providers and users, making users more aware of how climate information can be of use in their decision-making, giving the climate service providers a better understanding of the users’ requirements for climate information, and shaping future scientific research and development. In addition to the benefits, we also document some challenges that have emerged, along with ways of alleviating them. We have two key recommendations from our experiences: make the time and space for effective engagement between the users and developers of any climate service;bring the needs of the users in to the design and delivery of the climate service as early as possible and throughout the development cycle.

We describe here a class of unconventional ion transporters,molecular rotors that transport ions through a rotating function rather than via traditional carrier or channel *** macroscopic rotors,these molecular rotors consist of three modularly tunable components,i.e.,a membrane-anchoring stator,a crown ether-containing rotator for ion binding and transport,and a triple bond-based axle that allows the rotator to freely rotate around the stator in the lipid *** bilayer experiments reveal the generally high ability of all molecular rotors in promoting the highly efficient transmembrane K^(+)flux(eC50 values=0.49-1.37 mol%relative to lipid).While molecular rotors differing only in the ion-binding unit exhibit similar ion transport activities,those differing in the rotator’s length display activity differences by up to 174%.
