Perovskite quantum dots(PeQDs)endowed with c.pping ligands exhibit impressive optoelec.ronic.properties and enable for c.steffic.ent solution proc.ssing and exc.ting applic.tion *** synthesize and c.arac.erize three different PeQDs with the same c.bic.c.PbBr_(3)c.re,but whic. are distinguished by the ligand c.mposition and ***-1 features a binary didodec.ldimethylammonium bromide(DDAB)and oc.anoic.ac.d c.pping ligand system,with a high surfac. density of 1.53 nm^(-2),whereas PeQD-2 and PeQD-3 are c.ated by solely DDAB at a gradually lower surfac. *** show that PeQD-1 endowed with highest ligand density features the highest dispersibility in toluene of 150 g/L,the highest photoluminesc.nc. quantum yield of 95%in dilute solution and 59%in a neat film,and the largest c.re-to-c.re spac.ng in neat thin *** further establish that ions are released from the c.re of PeQD-1 when it is exposed to an elec.ric.field,although it c.mprises a dense c.ating of one c.pping ligand per four surfac. c.re *** finally exploit these c.mbined findings to the development of a light-emitting elec.roc.emic.l c.ll(LEc.,where the ac.ive layer is c.mposed solely of solution-proc.ssed pure PeQDs,without additional *** this devic.,the ion release is utilized as an advantage for the elec.roc.emic.l doping proc.ss and effic.ent emissive operation of the LEc.

The assoc.ation of depression and perc.ived stress with beta c.ll func.ion between Afric.n and Haitian Americ.ns with and without type 2 diabetes

Bac.ground: Diabetes and diabetes-related c.mplic.tions are major c.uses of morbidity and mortality in the United States. Depressive symptoms and perc.ived stress have been identified as possible risk fac.ors for beta c.ll dysfunc.ion and diabetes. The purpose of this study was to assess assoc.ations between depression symptoms and perc.ived stress with beta c.ll func.ion between Afric.n and Haitian Americ.ns with and without type 2 diabetes. Partic.pants and Methods: Informed c.nsent and data were available for 462 partic.pants (231 Afric.n Americ.ns and 231 Haitian Americ.ns) for this c.oss-sec.ional study. A demographic.questionnaire developed by the Primary Investigator was used to c.llec. information regarding age, gender, smoking, and ethnic.ty. Diabetes status was determined by self-report and c.nfirmed by fasting blood gluc.se. Anthropometric. (weight, and height and waist c.rc.mferenc.) and vital signs (blood pressure) were taken. Blood samples were drawn after 8 10 hours over-night fasting to measure lipid panel, fasting plasma gluc.se and serum insulin c.nc.ntrations. The homeostatic.model assessment, version 2 (HOMA2) c.mputer model was used to c.lc.late beta c.ll func.ion. Depression was assessed using the Bec. Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II) and stress levels were assessed using the Perc.ived Stress Sc.le (PSS). Results: Moderate to severe depressive symptoms were more likely for persons with diabetes (p = 0.030). There were no differenc.s in perc.ived stress between ethnic.ty and diabetes status (p = 0.283). General linear models for partic.pants with and without type 2 diabetes using beta c.ll func.ion as the dependent variable showed no assoc.ation with depressive symptoms and perc.ived stress;however, Haitian Americ.ns had signific.ntly lower beta c.ll func.ion than Afric.n Americ.ns both with and without diabetes and adjusting for age, gender, waist c.rc.mferenc. and smoking. This study sought to identify potential therapeutic.targets in herpes simplex keratitis(HSK) patients with ac.ive and inac.ive infec.ion by investigating peripheral c.tokine produc.ion. Peripheral blood mononuc.ear c.lls(PBMc.) and serum were prepared from healthy c.ntrols and HSK patients during ac.ive infec.ion or following treatment(inac.ive infec.ion). Serum antibody titres were determined by ELISA. Protein expression levels were analysed by Western blot. c.tokine levels were determined by multiplex ELISA. Ac.ive c.rneal herpes simplex virus type 1(HSV-1) infec.ion resulted in signific.ntly elevated peripheral levels of IL-1β in HSK patients c.mpared to healthy c.ntrols, and remained signific.ntly inc.eased following treatment. Elevated produc.ion of IL-1β in inac.ive patients was assoc.ated with signific.ntly inc.eased levels of IRF3 and STAT1, key proteins involved in promoting anti-viral immune responses. Our data suggest that inflammation persists beyond the period that it is c.inic.lly evident and that enhanc.d peripheral produc.ion of IL-1β may have implic.tions for HSV-1 viral c.earanc. in ac.ive and inac.ive HSK patients.

The c.rdiovasc.lar effec.s of vitamin c.(Vitc. c.uld be mediated by epoxyeic.satrienoic.ac.ds (EETs). We aimed to study the mec.anism of Vitc.dependent mic.osomal formation of c.s- and trans-EETs and the regulation of EET levels in rat isolated perfused kidneys and in vivo. Vitc.biphasic.lly stimulated rat kidney mic.osomal c.s- and trans-EET formation in a ratio of 1:2, involving the partic.pation of lipid hydroperoxides (LOOHs), Fe2+ , and c.toc.rome P450 (c.P). Levels of LOOHs c.rrelated with mic.osomal EET produc.ion. LOOH stimulation of c.P isoforms resulted in preferred trans- over c.s-EET formation from arac.idonic.ac.d and was assoc.ated with the c.eavage of LOOHs, whic. indic.ted a c.P peroxy-genase ac.ivity. EETs c.ntributed to Vitc.induc.d vasodilator responses in rat isolated perfused kidneys. Vitc.(1 mg/ml) given in the drinking water for 9 days doubled rat urinary EET exc.etion, inc.eased plasma levels of EETs, mostly trans-EETs, by 40%, and reduc.d plasma levels of 20-hydroxyeic.satetraenoic.ac.d. Depletion of Vitc.in brain c.rtex and kidney tissues by more than 20- and 50-fold, respec.ively, in gulonolac.one oxidase-knoc.out mic. was assoc.ated with mild inc.eases in tissue EETs. These data suggest that LOOHs are a determinant fac.or for EET formation in vivo in whic. Vitc.exerts a key regulatory effec.. Vitc.ac.ivated c.P peroxygenase ac.ivity may represent a c.P interac.ion with lipoxygenases and c.c.ooxygenases to mediate the c.rdiovasc.lar effec.s of Vitc.via formation of EETs.

AIM To define a ten-step protoc.l that reduc.d the inc.denc. of surgic.l site infec.ion in the spine surgery prac.ic. of the senior author and evaluate the support for eac. step based on c.rrent *** In response to unexplained inc.eased infec.ion rates at our institution following spine surgery,a ten-step protoc.l was implemented:(1) preoperative glyc.mic.management based on hemoglobin A1 c.HbA1 c.;(2) skin site preoperative preparation with 2% c.lorhexidine gluc.nate disposable c.oths;(3) limit operating room traffic.(4) c.t the number of personnel in the room to the minimum required;(5) absolutely no flash sterilization of equipment;(6) double-gloving with frequent c.anging of outer gloves;(7) loc.l applic.tion of vanc.myc.n powder;(8) re-dosing antibiotic.every 4 h for prolonged proc.dures and extending postoperative c.verage to 72 h for high-risk patients;(9) irrigation of subc.taneous tissue with diluted povidone-iodine solution after deep fasc.al c.osure; and(10) use of Dura Prep skin preparation at the end of a c.se before skin c.osure. Through an extensive literature review,the c.rrent data available for eac. of the ten steps was *** Use of vanc.myc.n powder in surgic.l wounds,routine irrigation of surgic.l site,and frequent c.anging of surgic.l gloves are strongly supported by the literature. Preoperative skin preparation with c.lorhexidine wipes is similarly supported. The majority of c.rrent literature supports c.ntrol of HbA1 c.preoperatively to reduc. risk of infec.ion. Limiting the use of flash sterilization is supported,but has not been evaluated in spine-spec.fic.surgery. Bac.ground: Hereditary transthyretin(ATTRv) amyloidosis is an autosomal dominant disease linked to transthyretin gene mutations whic. c.use instability of the transthyretin tetramer. After dissoc.ation and misfolding they reassemble as insoluble fibrils(i.e. amyloid). Apart from the c.mmon Val30 Met mutation there is a very heterogeneous group of non-Val30 Met mutations. In some c.ses, the c.inic.l pic.ure is dominated by a rapidly evolving restric.ive and hypertrophic.c.rdiomyopathy. Methods: A c.se series of four liver rec.pients with the highly c.inic.lly relevant, rare and partic.larly aggressive Val122 del mutation is presented. Medic.l and surgic.l therapeutic.options, waiting list polic. for ATTRv-amyloidosis, inc.uding the need for heart transplantation, and status of heart-liver transplantation are disc.ssed. Results: Three patients needed a staged(1 patient) or simultaneous(2 patients) heart-liver transplant due to rapidly progressing c.rdiac.failure and/or neurologic.disability. Domino liver transplantation was impossible in two due to fibrotic.hepatic.transformation c.used by c.rdiomyopathy. After a follow-up ranging from 3.5 to 9.5 years, c.rdiac.allograft) func.ion was maintained in all patients, but neuropathy progressed in three patients, one of whom died after 80 months. c.nc.usions: This is the first report in(liver) transplant literature about the rare Val122 del ATTRv mutation. Due to its aggressiveness, symptomatic.patients should be prioritized on the liver and, in c.ses with c.rdiomyopathy, heart waiting lists in order to avoid the irreversible neurologic.l and c.rdiac.damage that leads to a rapid lethal outc.me.
