With the increasing availability of large-area graphene, the ability to rapid.y and.accurately assess the quality of the electrical properties has become critically important. For practical applications, spatial variability in carrier d.nsity and.carrier mobility must be controlled.and.minimized. We present a simple framework for assessing the quality and.homogeneity of large-area graphene d.vices. The field.effect in both exfoliated.graphene d.vices encapsulated.in hexagonal boron nitrid. and.chemical vapor-d.posited.（CVd. d.vices was measured.in d.al current-voltage configurations and.used.to d.rive a single, gate-d.pend.nt effective shape factor, t, for each d.vice, β is a sensitive ind.cator of spatial homogeneity that can be obtained.from samples of arbitrary shape. All 50 d.vices investigated.in this stud. show a variation （up to tenfold. in β as a function of the gate bias. Finite element simulations suggest that spatial d.ping inhomogeneity, rather than mobility inhomogeneity, is the primary cause of the gate d.pend.nce of β, and.that measurable variations of β can be caused.by d.ping variations as small as 10^10 cm^-2. Our results suggest that local variations in the position of the d.rac point alter the current flow and.thus the effective sample shape as a function of the gate bias. We also found.that such variations lead.to systematic errors in carrier mobility calculations, which can be revealed.by inspecting the correspond.ng β factor.

The electrochemical corrosion mechanisms of Mg alloys were extensively stud.ed.in previous investigations of d.fferent chemical com-positions,mod.fied.surface states and.various electrolyte ***,recent research focused.on the active state of Mg d.ssolution,lead.ng to unresolved.effects of second.ry phases ad.acent to a stableα-solid.solution passive *** present stud. investigates the fund.mental electrochemical corrosion mechanisms of three d.fferent Laves phases with varying phase morphologies and.phase fractions in the passive state of Mg-Al-Ca *** microstructure was characterized.by(transmission-)electron microscopy and.synchrotron-based.transmission X-ray *** electrochemical corrosion resistance was d.termined.with a stand.rd.three-electrod. setup and.ad.anced.in-situ flow cell measurements.A new electrochemical activity sequence(C15>C36>α-Mg>C14)was obtained.as a result of a stable passive layer formation on theα-solid.***,nm-scale Mg-rich precipitates were id.ntified.within the Laves phases,which tend.to inhibit the corrosion kinetics.

This article d.scribes in d.tail a technique for mod.l!ng cavity optomechanical field.sensors. A magnetic or electric field.ind.ces a spatially varying stress across the sensor, which then ind.ces a force on mechanical eigenmod.s of the system. The force on each oscillator can then be d.termined.from an overlap integral between magnetostrictive stress and.the correspond.ng eigenmod., with the optomechanical coupling strength d.termining the ultimate resolution with which this force can be d.tected. Furthermore, an optomechanical magnetic field.sensor is compared.to other magnetic field.sensors in terms of sensitivity and.potential for miniaturization. It is shown that an optomechanical sensor can potentially outperform state-of-the-art magnetometers of similar size, in particular other sensors based.on a magnetostrictive mechanism.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the most com- mon cancers in the world.with an annual incid.nce of more than 500 000 in the year 2000. Its incid.nce is rising in many countries. Recently, it has been estimated.that about 53% of HCC cases in the world.are related.to hepatitis B virus (HBV). The epid.miological association of HBV with HCC is well established. In recent stud.es, it was revealed.that HBsAg carriers have a 25-37 times increased.risk of d.veloping HCC as compared.to non-infected.people. At present, HBV-associated.carcinogenesis can be seen as a multi-factorial process that includ.s both d.rect and.ind.rect mechanisms that might act synergistically. The integration of HBV d.A into the host genome occurs at early steps of clonal tumor expansion. The integration has been shown in a number of cases to affect a variety of cancer- related.genes and.to exert insertional mutagenesis. The permanent liver inflammation, ind.ced.by the immune response, resulting in a d.generation and.regeneration process confers to the accumulation of critical mutations in the host genome. In ad.ition to this, the regulatory proteins HBx and.the PreS2 activators that can be encod.d.by the integrate exert a tumor promoter-like function resulting in positive selection of cells prod.cing a functional regulatory protein. Gene expression profiling and.proteomic techniques may help to characterize the molecular mechanisms d.iving HBV-associated.carcino- genesis, and.thus potentially id.ntify new strategies in d.agnosis and.therapy.

Chlorine Analysis by d.od. Laser Atomic Absorption Spectrometry

The general characteristics of d.od. Laser Absorption Spectrometry (d.AAS) in low pressure plasmas particulary with respect to the d.tection of non metals are comprehensively recapitulated.and.d.scussed. Furthermore, a d.tector, which is based.on d.AAS in a microwave ind.ced.low pressure plasma as an alternative technique for halogene specific analysis of volatile compound. and.polymeric matrices is d.scribed. The analytical capability of the technique is d.monstrated.on the chlorine specific analysis of ablated.polymer fragments as well as gas chromatographically separated.hyd.ocarbons. Since the measurements were carried.out by means of a balanced.heterod.ne d.tection scheme, d.fferent technical noise contributions, such as laser excess and.RAM noise could.efficiently be suppressed.and.the registered.absorption was limited.only by the principal shot noise. Thus, in the case of the polymer analysis a chlorine specific absolute d.tection limit of 10 pg could.be achieved. Furthermore, fund.mental investigations concerning the influence of hyd.ocarbons on the d.ssociation capability of the microwave ind.ced.plasma were performed. For this purpose, the carbon , chlorine and.hyd.ogen specific stoichiometry of the compound. were empirically d.termined. d.viations from the exspected.proportions were found.to be insignificant, implying the possibility of internal stand.rd.zation relative to the response of a reference sample.

Increasing prod.ction effeciency and.lowering costs are some of the many ad.antages melt crystallization technology offers over the conventional method.logy of tabletting. A normal tablet consists of a pure shell or a coat and.a separate core constituting the pharmaceutical active ingred.ent. Great emphasis is put on the purity of the shell since its purpose is to solely protect and.d.liver the active ingred.ent to its target. Melt crystallization is a purification （separation） process. It is d.scussed.here for its ability to prod.ce coated.tablets, by separating the ＂coating＂ material from the ＂to be coated. material coming from one molten mixture. Molten d.ops of lutrol-ibuprofen mixture are prod.ced.using the d.op forming technique. The subsequent analysis involves proving and.quantifying the phase separation （coat purity）. The mechanism of a crystallizing d.op is shown as d.rect evid.nce of the ongoing process. Moreover, solid.fied.tablet batches are analyzed.for the purity of their coating by measuring the ibuprofen concentration. This optimization process is carried.out through multiple stages of d.velopment and.cond.tion enhancements in ord.r to prod.ce the most pure tablet coating. As a result, a trial showing an almost purely coated.tablet is presented.here.

Pred.cting Arabid.psis Freezing Tolerance and.Heterosis in Freezing Tolerance from Metabolite Composition

Heterosis, or hybrid.vigor, is one of the most important tools in plant breed.ng and.has previously been d.m- onstrated.for plant freezing tolerance. Freezing tolerance is an important trait because it can limit the geographical d.s- tribution of plants and.their agricultural yield. Plants from temperate climates increase in freezing tolerance d.ring exposure to low, non-freezing temperatures in a process termed.＇cold.acclimation＇. Metabolite profiling has ind.cated.a major reprogramming of plant metabolism in the cold. but it has remained.unclear in previous stud.es which of these changes are related.to freezing tolerance. In the present stud., we have used.metabolic profiling to d.scover combinations of metabolites that pred.ct freezing tolerance and.its heterosis in Arabid.psis thaliana. We id.ntified.compatible solutes and. in particular, the pathway lead.ng to raffinose as crucial statistical pred.ctors for freezing tolerance and.its heterosis, while some TCA cycle intermed.ates contribute only to pred.cting the heterotic phenotype. This ind.cates coord.nate links between heterosis and.metabolic pathways, suggesting that a limited.number of regulatory genes may d.termine the extent of heterosis in this complex trait. In ad.ition, several unid.ntified.metabolites strongly contributed.to the pred.ction of both freezing tolerance and.its heterosis and.we present an exemplary analysis of one of these, id.ntifying it as a hexose conjugate.
