BACKGRoUND Neurogenic heterotopic ossification is an acquired serious complication described in patients with central nervous system disorders and defined by bone formation in non-osseous *** SUMMARY We present an unusual case of a 13-yr-old boy presenting with hip pain and severe gait impairment 5 mo after the diagnosis of hemiplegia following a spontaneous intracerebral *** tomography revealed bilateral heterotopic ossification of both the paretic and the non-paretic limbs,with entrapment of the sciatic *** choice of surgical or nonsurgical management of such patients depends on the timing of diagnosis,the symptoms,and the extent of maturation of the ossified *** resection remains the only treatment with proven,evidence-based *** choice of surgical approach largely depends on the location of the ossified *** We believe the plane of dissection presented is a satisfactory option for resection of a posteromedial mass and sciatic nerve release.

The longleaf pine(Pinus palustris Mill.)ecosystem is an endangered ecosystem in the southeastern USA,and efforts to restore the species are ***,in recent decades,the region has experienced drastic fluctuations between wet and dry growing season conditions from year to year,and it is not fully understood how these fluctuations have influenced the growth of *** address this topic,we cored *** trees in woodlands of southwest Georgia and used dendrochronology techniques to determine how climate fluctuations have influenced the growth and drought resilience of *** also cored slash pine(Pinus elliottii Engelm.)trees in the same woodlands to compare growth between *** *** growth was less impacted by adverse climate conditions compared to ***,the strength of correlations between *** growth and temperature,precipitation,and Palmer Drought Severity Index(PDSI)changed over *** recent decades,climate conditions during the growing season became more influential on *** growth than the previous year's *** is concerning given that drought severity during the growing season has been *** results also indicate that *** was less resilient to droughts during the 2000s and 2010s than to those of the *** this new climate paradigm,our results suggest that *** might be more susceptible to growth reductions and less resistant to droughts than once *** work highlights the importance of understanding the impact of novel climate conditions on *** and has implications for restoration efforts,such as using silvicultural treatments that reduce tree vulnerability to drought(e.g.,thinning)and promote other climate-adapted species in mixture with ***.

The Paraiba do Sul(PSR)and Guandu Rivers(GR)water diversion system(120 km long)is located in the main industrial pole of Brazil and supplies drinking water for 9.4 million people in the metropolitan region of Rio de *** study aims to discern the trace metals dynamics in this complex aquatic *** used a combined approach of geochemical tools such as geochemical partitioning,Zn isotopes signatures,and multivariate *** and Pb concentrations in Suspended Particulate Matter(SPM)and sediments were considerably higher in some *** sediment partition of As,Cr,and Cu revealed the residual fraction(F4)as the main fraction for these elements,indicating low *** and Pb were mostly associated with the exchangeable/carbonate(F1)and the reducible(F2)fractions,respectively,implying a higher susceptibility of these elements to being released from *** isotopic compositions of sediments and SPM fell in a binary mixing source process between lithogenic(δ^(66/64)Zn_(JMC)≈+0.30‰)and anthropogenic(δ^(66/64)Zn_(JMC)≈+0.15‰)end *** lighterδ^(66/64)Zn_(JMC)values accompanied by high Zn concentrations in exchangeable/carbonate fraction(ZnF1)enable the tracking of Zn anthropogenic sources in the studied ***,the results indicated that Hg,Pb,and Zn had a dominant anthropogenic origin linked to the industrial activities,while As,Cr,and Cu were mainly associated with lithogenic *** work demonstrates how integrating geochemical tools is valuable for assessing geochemical processes and mixing source effects in anthropized river watersheds.

The stone marten(Martes foina)is a carnivorous mammal that often consumes fleshy fruits,thus potentially promoting seed *** present study was developed in Bussaco National Forest,central Portugal,and aimed to assess the potential role of the stone marten in dispersing native and exotic plants in different forest landscape *** from stone marten scats and fleshy fruits were collected monthly and were thereafter identified and sowed in a nursery,following a randomized experimental *** emergence was monitored *** linear models were used to test for differences in time and success of emergence between seeds from scats and fruits of 3 native species(Rubus ulmifolius,Arbutus unedo and Celtis australis)and 1 exotic plant species with invasive behavior(Prunus laurocerasus).Fruit consumption by the stone martens significantly increased and accelerated the germination of the native *** but had no effect on the other 2 native species or on the invasive *** suggested that stone martens contribute to gene flow and forest regeneration by dispersing native plant ***,although the germination was not enhanced in the invasive species,the preference of stone martens for these fruits may potentially contribute to the proliferation of *** study represents a contribution to better understanding the fauna and flora interactions,enabling for a more conscious and effective decision-making in forest management.

Incorporation of bioactive natural compounds like polyphenols is an attractive approach for enhanced functionalities of *** particular flavonoids have important pharmacological activities,and controlled release systems may be instrumental to realize the full potential of these *** presents interesting attributes for dermal and other biomaterial applications,and studies were carried here to support the development of polyphenol-loaded alginate *** of capillary viscosity indicated that ionic medium is an effective strategy to modulate the polyelectrolyte effect and viscosity properties of *** gelation,considerable differences were observed between alginate gels produced with Ca^2+,Ba^2+,Cu^2+,Fe^2+,Fe^3+and Zn^2+as crosslinkers,especially concerning shrinkage and morphological *** assays with different polyphenols in the presence of alginate-gelling cations pointed to the choice of calcium,barium and zinc as safer ***-based films loaded with epicatechin were prepared and the kinetics of release of the flavonoid *** results with calcium,barium and zinc alginate matrices indicated that the release dynamics is dependent on film thicknesses,but also on the crosslinking metal *** these grounds,an alginate-based system of convenient use was devised,so that flavonoids can be easily loaded at simple point-of-care conditions before dermal *** epicatechin-loaded patch was tested on an ex-vivo skin model and demonstrated capacity to deliver therapeutically relevant concentrations on skin ***,the flavonoid released was not modified and retained full antioxidant *** alginate-based system proposed offers a multifunctional approach for flavonoid controllable delivery and protection of skin injured or under risk.

Ileal intussusception is the invagination of the small intestine within itself and accounts for 1% of cases of acute obstruction. However, physicians do not initially consider intussusception as a possible diagnosis of obstruction due to its rarity in adults. Herein, we report the case of a 22-year-old male who was admitted to the Emergency Department with continuous abdominal pain. Ultrasonography and computed tomography revealed an ileal intussusception. The patient underwent surgical removal of the segment of the small bowel. Unexpectedly, pathology revealed that the invagination occurred due to a parasite egg, with features suggestive of Schistosoma species. Schistosomiasis, although considered a parasitic disease in tropical countries, is not absent from Europe and though it is highly improbable, it may be responsible for cases of intussusception in adults.

Transition metal sulfide(TMS)anodes exhibit the characteristics of phase stability and high capacity for lithium/sodium-ion batteries(LIBs/SIBs).However,the TMS anodes often suffer from poor electronic conductivity,low ionic diffusion and large volume expansion during Li/Na-ion intercalation significantly impairing the Li/Na-storage ***,a long chain heterostructure composed of the Co_(9)S_(8) and SnS are first reported,which can generate rich phase interfaces,and small crystal *** unique structure can facilitate the properties of reactivity,conductivity and ionic *** addition,the heterostructure surface is modified by the N-doped carbon(N-DC@(CoSn)S),successfully improving the structural *** synergistic effects of Co_(9)S_(8)/SnS heterostructure and coated carbon layer effectively increase the capacity and cycling *** N-DC@(CoSn)S anode delivers enhanced high specific capacities of 820.6 mAh·g^(−1) at 1.0 A·g^(–1) after 500 cycles for LIBs and 339.2 mAh·g^(–1)at 0.5 A·g^(–1) after 1000 cycles for SIBs,*** work is expected to provide a material design idea for preparing LIBs/SIBs with high capacity and long cycling life.

The building stock is responsible for a large share of global energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions,therefore,it is critical to promote building retrofit to achieve the proposed carbon and energy neutrality *** of the policies implemented in recent years was the Energy Performance Certificate(EPC)policy,which proposes building stock benchmarking to identify buildings that require ***,research shows that these mechanisms fail to engage stakeholders in the retrofit process because it is widely seen as a mandatory and complex *** study makes use of an EPC database to integrate machine learning techniques with multi-objective optimization and develop an interface capable of(1)predicting a building’s,or household’s,energy needs;and(2)providing the user with optimum retrofit solutions,costs,and return on *** goal is to provide an open-source,easy-to-use interface that guides the user in the building retrofit *** energy and EPC prediction models show a coefficient of determination(R2)of 0.84 and 0.79,and the optimization results for one case study EPC with a 2000€budget limit inÉvora,Portugal,show decreases of up to 60%in energy needs and return on investments of up to 7 in 3 years.
