The response of an optical strain sensor based on the fiber Bragg grating is theoretically analyzed with a different approach of that found usually in the literature. In this model, geometrical changes suffered by the grating itself are taken into account. The results are compared with those from experiments, showing very good agreement.

Antithrombotic treatment in chronic heart failure and sinus rhythm: Systematic review

AIM: To assess the efficacy and safety of antithrombotic drugs(antiplatelet or anticoagulant drugs) compared to no antithrombotic treatment or placebo in patients with heart failure(HF) and sinus rhythm. METHoDS: We searched Medline and Cochrane Library for randomized controlled trials evaluating antithrombotic treatment and no antithrombotic treatment in patients with HF and sinus rhythm. Risk ratio(RR) and 95%CIs were estimated performing meta-analysis with random effects method. RESULTS: Two studies met the inclusion criteria: Heart failure Long-term Antithrombotic Study and Warfarin/Aspirin Study in Heart failure, with 336 patients and mean follow-up 1.8-2.25 years. Stroke risk was not reduced by acetylsalicylic acid(RR = 1.18, 95%CI: 0.17-8.15), oral anticoagulation(RR = 0.30, 95%CI: 0.03-2.65) or overall antithrombotic drugs(RR = 0.52, 95%CI: 0.10-2.74). Acetylsalicylic acid showed a significant increased risk of worsening HF(RR = 1.78, 95%CI: 1.08-2.92), while oral anticoagulation had no impact in this outcome(RR = 1.03, 95%CI: 0.61-1.75). overall antithrombotic drugs showed a significant risk increase of major bleeding(RR = 6.99, 95%CI: 0.89-54.64). CoNCLUSIoN: Best available evidence does not support the routine use of antithrombotic drugs in patients with HF and sinus rhythm. These drugs, particularly oral anti-coagulation has the hazard of increase significantly major bleeding risk.

Cognitive Ability in Elderly in a City in Northeastern Brazil: An Analytical Study

To analyze the cognitive ability of elderly people assisted by the Family Health Strategy (FHS) in a northeastern Brazilian city, a cross-sectional, analytical study was conducted with 406 elderly assisted by the FHS in Mossoro-RN, Brazil, from March to May 2014. The data were collected through two validated questionnaires. For the data analysis, the Alpha Cronbach’s, Kruskal-Wallis test, chi-square and Pearson correlation statistical tests were applied. There was a predominance of women (67.98%) in the survey. Among the respondents, 50% had an index of up to 27 points in Pfeffer Instrument, identifying greater degree of dependence in performing instrumental daily activities related to mobility in the community (39.7%) and financial management (57.1%). on Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), 75% of seniors had an index above 27 points, with the scores classification as standard (50.99%), mild (25.12%), moderate (22.66%) and severe (1.23%). Although changes have been identified in cognitive performance and independence of elderly people in some areas, these difficulties do not completely affect the lives and daily activities of the elderly.

Nutritional Screening Tools in Institutionalized People: A Case Study of Using Nutritional Risk Screening (NRS 2002) and Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA)

Nutritional status expresses the physiological and nutritional needs to maintain the composition and adequate functioning of the organism. NRS 2002 and MNA protocols were applied to short-term institutionalized patients in Rio Verde (Brazil). older adults and people with special needs of all ages, both sexes, regardless of possible pathology they may have, except if it causes contagion, were included, patients duly authorized by the person responsible for the institution and who were able to undergo evaluation. Thirty-eight patients from the institution were evaluated, of which ten were excluded from the research according to pre-established criteria. More than 50% of participants were male, with an overall average age of 63.43 years. The characteristics related to nutritional status by NRS 2002 and MNA showed that the risk of malnutrition and its absence are associated with a wide age range. The MNA presents a more nuanced nutritional risk classification, showing that even 61% of the 96% of participants who would be out of nutrition risk, according to the NRS 2002, are “at risk of malnutrition”. Applying the MNA can demonstrate more conservative results than the NRS 2002.

The recent events and constant global changes show the importance of rethinking city *** this context,the 15-Minute City concept got important as it brings people closer to activities and services,through short trips by active modes,being the key to a sustainable *** on this concept,this paper analysed the spatial accessibility of residents of Belo Horizonte(Brazil)to two establishments essential to the quality of life:bakeries and *** analyses were made through the influence areas,spatial clusters,and the Local Indicators of Spatial *** results showed that bakeries are more accessible than supermarkets,which are not accessible to the entire population,especially in low-density and low-income *** addition,areas with potential for new projects were identified by the relationship between existing facilities(supermarkets or bakeries)and population density/***,the results highlight the challenges for developing sustainable cities considering the 15-Minute City concept throughout the territory of Belo Horizonte.

The continuous excavation of burrows by fiddler crabs generates bioturbation in the sediment,which can be estimated from burrow *** aim of the present study was to describe the burrow morphology of Uca uruguayensis and *** and its relationship with demography of resident individuals and to estimate the level of bioturbation in the sediment generated by each *** all individuals from each of the 2 species,sex was determined and the carapace width(CW;mm)*** were characterized according to burrow diameter(BD;mm),maximum burrow depth(MBD;mm)and burrow volume(BV;cm^(3)).The density of each species in the study area was also *** both species,the males were larger and occupied burrows with higher BV compared to *** between sexes in relation to the burrow characteristics might reflect sexual dimorphism within the group and are probably related to the fact that males use the burrows for *** and BV showed significant positive relationships with the size of resident *** amount of sediment removed per burrow was estimated from mean BV:10.78 cm^(3)of sediment/burrow for *** and 12.38 cm^(3)of sediment/burrow for *** the density and depth differences between the 2 species,the similarity in burrow volume suggests that *** and *** present the same importance in terms of the bioturbation *** morphology is highly associated with characteristics of the occupant,although extrinsic factors should also be considered,and its description can provide estimates on the bioturbation generated by Uca species in mangrove forests.

Sorption has been proposed as a promising approach towards a sustainable water decontamination and recently to the recycling of rare earth elements(REE).Although living seaweed have been shown to be capable of removing REE from contaminated solutions,no studies have yet compared the effects of REE competition on sorption onto different groups of *** effects were analysed in the present study by exposing six living seaweeds(Ulva lactuca,Ulva intestinalis,Fucus spiralis,Fucus vesiculosus,Gracilaria *** osmundea pinnatifida)(3 g/L,fresh weight) to mono-element and multi-element solutions of Y,La,Ce,Pr,Nd,Eu,Gd,Tb and Dy(1 μmol/L).Results show a preference towards light REE in mono-element solutions,which is reduced when in competition with other *** competitive effect is less pronounced in heavy REE indicating that these are still able to bind to the macroalgae despite the presence of competing *** to water content(%),seaweed specific surface area(cm^(2)/g) shows to be an important factor in the sorption of REE,since larger surface area is associated with higher removal and larger competitive effect.

This work investigates the effect of cerium substation into strontium cobalt perovskites(CeSrCoo)for the oxidative degradation of orangeⅡ(oII)in dark ambient conditions without the aid of any external stimulants such as light,heating or chemical *** oII degradation rate by CeSrCoo reached 65%in the first hour,whilst for the blank sample without cerium(SrCoo)took over 2 hr to reach the same level of oII ***,the cerium substitution improved the catalytic activity of the perovskite material,mainly associated with the Ce0.1Sr0.9Coo3 perovskite *** contacting CeSrCoo,the-N=Nazo bonds of the oII molecules broke down resulting in electron donation and the formation of *** electrons are injected into the CeSrCoo and resulted in a redox pair of Co3+/Co2+,establishing a bridge for the electron transfer between oII and the ***,the electrons also formed reactive species(·oH)responsible for oII degradation as evidenced by radical trapping *** species were formed via the reaction between 02 and donated electrons from oII with the aid of cobalt redox *** the prepared materials dispensed with the need for light irradiation and additional oxidants,it opens a window of environmental applications for treating contaminated wastewaters.
