There are basically four stages of a person＇s thinking. The first is a person＇s quest for meaning. It is a time for questions. Socrates said that an unexamined life is not worth living. Yet in America, living an examined life is rare. The challenge is to live an examined life in a culture of unexamined lives. The second stage is a time for answers. We cannot avoid the realism of evil, yet today, few have seriously examined absolute evil. The third stage is a time for confirmation and assurances to our answers of evil and pain. The fourth stage is the time for commitment and beginning of the journey. For the simple person who has all the answers, there is no further journey. At the other extreme is the intellectual who never has all the answers. There is always a question for another day and there is never any really settled resolution on what he or she believes or why. There are two basic philosophical systems that have influenced our thinking about morals and about law. The first is naturalism, which began in the 6th century B.C., in the Greek Ionian culture with a certain set of cosmologies, most of which were naturalistic in nature where reality was expressed in terms of water, fire, earth, or air. Naturalism has experienced great growth since in the Enlightenment. However, the notion at the heart of morality and law is idealism. Indeed, for much of the history of legal thought, the connection between morality and law was found in idealism. It is within the philosophy of idealism that we find the history of natural law theory. This matters because how one thinks about the nature and purpose of law, what forms the foundation of law and how it is made, either legislatively or through the courts is one of the most elusive and persistent problems in the entire range of human thought. This article explores some of that history.

BACKGROUND Asymptomatic children with Crohn's disease(CD) require ongoing monitoring to ensure early recognition of a disease *** In a cohort of pediatric CD patients, we aimed to assess the utility of serial fecal calprotectin measurements to detect intestinal inflammatory activity and predict disease *** In this prospective longitudinal cohort study, children with CD on infliximab therapy in clinical remission were included. Fecal calprotectin levels were assessed at baseline and at subsequent 2-5 visits. Clinical and biochemical disease activity were assessed using the Pediatric Crohn's Disease Activity Index, Creactive protein and erythrocyte sedimentation rate at baseline and at visits over the following 18 *** 53 children were included and eighteen patients(34%) had a clinical disease relapse during the study. Baseline fecal calprotectin levels were higher in patients that developed symptomatic relapse [median(interquartile range), relapse 723μg/g(283-1758) vs 244 μg/g(61-627), P = 0.02]. Fecal calprotectin levels > 250μg/g demonstrated good predictive accuracy of a clinical flare within 3 mo(area under the receiver operator curve was 0.86, 95% confidence limits 0.781 to 0.937).CONClUSION Routine fecal calprotectin testing in children with CD in clinical remission is useful to predict relapse. levels > 250 μg/g are a good predictor of relapse in the following 3 mo. This information is important to guide monitoring standards used in this population.

The ablation properties of two laminated composites, having both a glass ceramic matrix and different kinds of fibers (C or SiC) with the same architecture, are evaluated and compared. Ablation tests are performed using an oxyacetylene torch on samples having two different thicknesses. Mass loss and ablation depth are measured after flame exposure. The results obtained show that the decomposition of SiC fibers during thermal exposure has a significant impact on ablation behavior. Oxidation of SiC produces a liquid SiO2 film at the top of the material during ablation. This leads to an improved ablation resistance compared to the glass ceramic matrix/C composite, especially in case of successive flame exposures where the SiO2 film consumes a substantial fraction of the heat flow during its liquefaction upon re-heating.

Development of Fuel Economy Gear Oil Technology

Our objectives were to test the potential replacement of fish meal by sesame oil cake(SOC) in high energy diets fed to rainbow trout(RT,Oncorhynchus mykiss) and brown trout(BT,Salmo trutta fario).Groups of trout(initial body weight(BW) of 1.42 g for RT and 1.48 g for BT) were fed to visual satiety with isonitrogenous(61 g digestible N kg dry matter(DM)) high-energy (22.1 MJ kg DM ) freeze-dried diets,in which fish meal was progressively replaced by SOC(0, 13,26,39 and 52%,on a N basis).Apparent digestibility coefficient(ADC) of the diets was determined using the indirect method.A growth trial was conducted over feeding 45 days at 15±0.6℃.Protein digestibility was high(91%) and was unaffected by either diet or *** of energy was reduced by 5.5%in both species when SOC replaced 52%of fish meal protein and was significantly higher in BT compared to *** rate increased when SOC progressively replaced fish meal until reaching a maximum at a substitution rate of 39%for RT and 26%for BT. In both species,DM intake(%BW day) linearly increased with substitution rate and feed efficiency was adversely affected by *** and energy retention efficiencies were little affected by diet(except in the 52%SOC diet for RT which showed significantly lower protein retention efficiency),but were significantly lower in BT compared to RT,especially energy retention efficiency(42.5-44.8%in RT vs.32.7-35.8%in BT).The positive effect of SOC on growth was mainly explained by a general increase in feed intake(2.54 and 3.23%BW day in RT and 1.73 and 2.10%in BT,for the fish meal control diet and the 52%SOC diet,respectively). From our results,it is concluded that SOC can substitute at least 52%of fish meal protein both in RT and in BT fry without negative effect in growth rate.

Impact of Preparation Process on the Protein Structure and on the Volatile Compounds in <i>Eisenia foetida</i>Protein Powders

Protein powders from Eisenia foetida were prepared using different drying processes and fractionation. Differential scanning calorimetry was used to show that heat denaturation occurred during the drying process above 42°C. Protein solubility was also studied. The addition of dissociating reagents allowed concluding that solubility was decreased during oven drying due to thermo denaturation including hydrogen bonds. The volatile compounds of the different powders were extracted by solid phase micro-extraction and identified by mass spectrometry. Volatile compounds were related to lipid oxidation and Maillard reactions occurring during the preparation of the powders. High drying temperatures led to more volatile compounds resulting from Maillard reactions. In the protein powder preparation process, a fractionation step led to a “pulp fraction” and a “juice fraction” of earthworms. The “pulp fraction” contained less odorant volatile compounds resulting from Maillard reactions than the “juice fraction” did.

Depletion of reservoir storage by sedimentation contributes to disasters ranging from increased flooding to loss of water supplies for irrigation and municipal use. Advances in managing reservoir sedimentation may be made by focusing research on physical processes, case histories, and determining what management methods are appropriate given the physical and socioeconomic setting of a project The shortcomings of traditional cost benefit analyses are illustrated and implicated as being partly responsible for the short project life assigned to dams and reservoirs. A short design hit is incompatible with sustainability. Sustainability is not only desirable, but also necessary when dealing with non-renewable resources such as reservoir storage. Recent advances in extending cost benefit analyses for long-term sustainability are described and recommended as starting points for active, multidisciplinary discussion on the topic.
