Sequential transcatheter arterial chemoembolization and portal vein embolization before right hemihepatectomy in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma

Background:Recent studies showed that sequential selective transcatheter arterial chemoembolization(TACE)and portal vein embolization(PVE)provided better future liver remnant(FLR)regeneration rate and disease-free survival following surgery compared with PVE *** present study aimed to clarify whether preoperative sequential TACE and PVE before right hemihepatectomy can reduce postoperative hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)recurrence and improve long-term disease-free and overall ***:Recurrence and survival outcomes were retrospectively evaluated in 205 patients with HCC who underwent right hemihepatectomy by a single surgeon from November 1993 to November *** were divided into four groups according to the procedure performed before the surgery:sequential TACE and PVE(TACE-PVE),PVE-only,TACE-only,or na?ve control *** baseline patient and tumor characteristics,postoperative outcomes,recurrence-free survival and overall survival were ***:Baseline patient and tumor characteristics upon diagnosis were similar in all four groups,while sequential TACE and PVE were well *** TACE-PVE group had a higher mean increase in percentage FLR volume compared with that of the PVE-only group(17.46%±6.63%vs.12.14%±5.93%;P=0.001).The TACE-PVE group had significantly better overall and disease-free survival rates compared with the other groups(both Pions:Sequential TACE and PVE prior to surgery can be an effective therapeutic strategy for patients with HCC scheduled for major hepatic *** active application of preoperative sequential TACE and PVE for HCC would allow more patients with marginal FLR volume to become candidates for major hepatic resection by promoting compensatory FLR hypertrophy without the deterioration of basal hepatic functional reserve or tumor progression.

Development of anti-corrosive coating on AZ31 Mg alloy subjected to plasma electrolytic oxidation at sub-zero temperature

Plasma electrolytic oxidation(PEO)is a promising surface treatment to generate adherent and thick anti-corrosive coating on light-weight metals(Al,Mg,Ti,etc.)using an eco-friendly alkaline *** energy plasma,however,inevitably generates porous structures that limit their practical *** present study proposes a straight-forward simple method by utilizing sub-zero electrolyte(268 K)to alter the plasma characteristics during formation of the protective coating on AZ31 Mg alloy via PEO with a comparison to the electrolyte at room temperature(298 K).in refrigerated electrolyte,the formation of micro-defects is suppressed relatively at the expense of low coating growth,which is measured to be twice lower than that at 298 K due to the temperature-dependent soft plasma discharges contributing to the development of the present *** a consequence,corrosion resistance of the sample processed at 268 K is superior to that of 298K,implying that the effect of coating thickness is less dominant than that of *** phenomenon is interpreted in relation to the ionic movement and oxide solidification controlled by soft plasma discharges arising from the temperature gradient between electrolyte and surface of the substrate during PEO.

An algorithm that minimizes audio fingerprints using the difference of Gaussians

Recently,many audio search sites headed by Google have used audio fingerprinting technology to search for the same audio and protect the music copyright using one part of the audio ***,if there are fingerprints per audio file,then the amount of query data for the audio search *** this paper,we propose a novel method that can reduce the number of fingerprints while providing a level of performance similar to that of existing *** proposed method uses the difference of Gaussians which is often used in feature extraction during image signal *** the experiment,we use the proposed method and dynamic time warping and undertake an experimental search for the same audio with a success rate of 90%.The proposed method,therefore,can be used for an effective audio search.

in this paper,we prove some Liouville-type theorems for the stationary magnetomicropolar fluids under suitable conditions in three space *** first prove that the solutions are trivial under the assumption of certain growth conditions for the mean oscillations of the *** then we show similar results assuming that the solutions are contained in L^(p)(R^(3))with p∈[2,9/2).Finally,we show the same result for lower values of p∈[1,9/4)with the further assumption that the solutions vanish at infinity.

Structural effects of 3D printing resolution on the gauge factor of microcrack-based strain gauges for health care monitoring

Measurements of physiological parameters such as pulse rate,voice,and motion for precise health care monitoring requires highly sensitive *** strain gauges are useful sensors that can be used in human health care *** this study,we propose a crack-based strain gauge fabricated by fused deposition modeling(FDM)-based three-dimensional(3D)-*** strain gauge combined a 3D-printed thermoplastic polyurethane layer and a platinum layer as the flexible substrate and conductive layer,*** a layer-by-layer deposition process,self-aligned crack arrays were easily formed along the groove patterns resulting from stress concentration during stretching *** gauges with a 200-μm printing thickness exhibited the most sensitive performance(~442%increase in gauge factor compared with that of a flat sensor)and the fastest recovery time(~99%decrease in recovery time compared with that of a flat sensor).in addition,500 cycling tests were conducted to demonstrate the reliability of the ***,various applications of the strain gauge as wearable devices used to monitor human health and motion were *** results support the facile fabrication of sensitive strain gauges for the development of smart devices by additive manufacturing.

Genetic Algorithm to Optimize the Design of Main Combustor and Gas Generator in Liquid Rocket Engines

A genetic algorithm was used to develop optimal design methods for the regenerative cooled combustor and fuel-rich gas generator of a liquid rocket engine. For the combustor design, a chemical equilibrium analysis was applied, and the profile was calculated using Rao's method. One-dimensional heat transfer was assumed along the profile, and cooling channels were designed. For the gas-generator design, non-equilibrium properties were derived from a counterflow analysis, and a vaporization model for the fuel droplet was adopted to calculate residence time. Finally, a genetic algorithm was adopted to optimize the designs. The combustor and gas generator were optimally designed for 30-tonf, 75-tonf, and 150-tonf engines. The optimized combustors demonstrated superior design characteristics when compared with previous non-optimized results. Wall temperatures at the nozzle throat were optimized to satisfy the requirement of 800 K, and specific impulses were maximized. in addition, the target turbine power and a burned-gas temperature of 1000 K were obtained from the optimized gas-generator design.

Role of serotonin in development of esophageal and gastric fundal varices

AiM:To determine the effect of free serotonin concentrations in plasma on development of esophageal and gastric fundal varices. METHODS:This prospective study included 33 patients with liver cirrhosis and 24 healthy controls. Ultrasonography and measurement of serotonin concentration in plasma were carried out in both groups of subjects. The upper fiber panendoscopy was performed only in patients with liver cirrhosis. RESULTS:The mean plasma free serotonin levels were much higher in liver cirrhosis patients than in healthy controls (219.0 ± 24.2 nmol/L vs 65.4 ± 18.7 nmol/L,P ignificant correlation be-tween serotonin concentration in plasma and the size of the esophageal varices according to Spearman coefficient of correlation (rs =-0.217,P > 0.05). However,the correlation of plasma serotonin concentration and gastric fundal varices was highly significant (rs =-0.601,P iON:Free serotonin is significant in pathogenesis of portal hypertension especially in development of fundal varices,indicating the clinical value of serotonergic receptor blockers in these patients.

Aims An open-field warming experiment enables us to test the effects of projected temperature increase on change in plant phenology with fewer confounding factors and to study phenological response to temperature ranges beyond natural *** study aims to(i)examine the effect of temperature increase on leaf unfold-ing and senescence of oriental oak(Quercus variabilis Blume)under experimental warming and(ii)measure temperature-related parameters used in estimating phenological response to tempera-ture *** Using an open-field warming system with infrared heaters,we increased the air temperature by~3℃ in the warmed plots compared with that of the control plots consistently for 2 *** unfolding and senescence dates of *** seedlings were recorded and temperature-related phenological parameters were *** Findings The timing of leaf unfolding was advanced by 3-8 days(1.1-3.0 days/℃)and the date of leaf senescence was delayed by 14-19 days(5.0-7.3 days/℃)under elevated air ***,the cumulative degree days(CDD)of leaf unfolding were not significantly changed by experimental warming,which suggest the applicability of a constant CDD value to estimate the change in spring leaf phe-nology under 3℃ *** ranges of advancement and temperature sensitivity in spring phenology and delayed autumn phe-nology and proposed temperature parameters from this study might be applied to predict future phenological change.
