Black scabbardfish,Aphanopus carbo,is a commercially important species that takes distant migrations throughout its life *** steroids were measured by radioimmunoassay in the blood plasma of specimens caught off the Madeira Archipelago and mainland Portugal to link this species migratory path with its reproductive ***,a pilot study using Mozambique tilapia(oreochromis mossambicus)was designed to evaluate the effect of sample freshness on steroid levels because black scabbardfish blood was collected at separate times after specimens were *** changes in T and 11-KT concentrations between the time of blood extraction and the time after preservation did not statistically differ among the different methods ***,measured black scabbardfish steroid concentrations were directly used in the subsequent data *** females,E2 and in T concentrations peaked at a late stage of vitellogenesis.E2 concentration was significantly different between females caught off each *** E2 and T concentrations from all developing females resulted in the separation of two distinct groups,independently of their geographical *** males,T and 11-KT were not significantly different between maturity *** hepatosomatic index of males caught off mainland Portugal was relatively *** may reflect a mechanism for storing energy that will later be consumed during migration to the spawning *** trend of sex steroids concentrations throughout the sexual maturation of the species is consistent with the morphological indicators and shows evidence of the reproductive and migratory pattern hypothesised for the black scabbardfish in NE Atlantic.

AIM: To present 18 new cases of human immunodeficiency virus(HIV)-related pulmonary arterial hypertension(PAH) with presenting features,treatment options and follow-up ***: This is a single-centre,retrospective,observational study that used prospectively collected data,conducted during a 14-year period on HIV-related PAH patients who were referred to a pulmonary hy-pertension unit. All patients infected with HIV were consecutively admitted for an initial evaluation of PAH during the study period and included in our study. Right heart catheterisation was used for the diagnosis of PAH. Specific PAH treatment was started according to the physician's judgment and the recommendations for idiopathic PAH. The data collected included demographic characteristics,parameters related to both HIV infection and PAH and disease ***: Eighteen patients were included. Intravenous drug use was the major risk factor for HIV infection. Risk factors for PAH,other than HIV infection,were present in 55.5% patients. The elapsed time between HIV infection and PAH diagnoses was 12.2 ± 6.9 years. At PAH diagnosis,94.1% patients had a CD4 cell count > 200 cells/μL. Highly active antiretroviral therapy(present in 47.1% patients) was associated with an accelerated onset of PAH. Survival rates were 93.8%,92.9% and 85.7% at one,two and three years,respectively. Concerning specific therapy,33.3% of the patients were started on a prostacyclin analogue,and the rest were on oral drugs,mainly phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitors. During the follow-up period,specific therapy was de-escalated to oral drugs in all of the living ***: The survival rates of HIV-related PAH patients were higher,most likely due to new aggressive specific therapy. The majority of patients were on oral specific therapy and clinically stable. Moreover,sildenafil appears to be a safe therapy for less severe HIVrelated PAH.

The aim of the current study was to determine the nature of the seasonal variability of the Suspended Particulate Matter(SPM) fluxes from the drainage basin to the estuary in a macrotidal region(Northeastern Brazil),and the estuarine response to a seawater intrusion regarding sediment deposition,which will support the understanding of the global transport of materials at the continent-ocean *** structure data was acquired using a Conductivity,Temperature,and Depth(CTD) probe with a sampling frequency of 4 *** particulate material was measured by gravimetric measurements applied to exact filtered volume *** outflows were measured through the use of an Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler(ADCP) with frequency of 1.5 *** horizontal thermal and saline gradients varied from warmer and less saline waters(2014) to cooler and saline waters(2015).The gradient behavior when linked to volume transport and SPM flows,suggests a minimization of the fluvial flows in 2015,easing the advance of coastal water(CW) towards the inner estuary,leading to an inversion of the baroclinic pressure *** bottom saline front,generated by the entrance of coastal water masses,caused an increase in SPM concentrations due to increased fluid density,resuspension of previously deposited sediment,and erosion of *** concentrations of SPM indicate higher volume transport suggesting a hydraulic barrier due to the change/inversion of the baroclinic pressure gradient,resulting in water and material *** deposition was observed during neap tide,while during spring tide the material is resuspended,increasing the concentration,generating cycles of deposition and erosion during the neap-spring *** sediment in suspension that reach the estuary,even with low fluvial volume,stay in this environment forming new islands because of *** deposition rates or sediment cycling,if generated by the hydraulic barrier,may indicate that the flo
