The consumption of marine macroalgae has been linked with health benefits,albeit some actions,including genoprotection,remain ***,we evaluated the genoprotective potential of a mixture of Ulva rigida,Fucus vesiculosus and Gracilaria gracilis,through direct consumption or via indirect intake using fish(Sparus aurata)as a vector of algal ***(Mus musculus)were subjected to a 1-month dietary supplementation with 5%of macroalgae mix or 10%of fillet of fish previously fed with an algae-supplemented aquafeed(for comparison purposes,10%supplementation with fillet of fish standardly fed was also considered).Thereafter,mice were challenged by the genotoxicant methyl methanesulfonate(MMS),and the genetic damage was evaluated through the micronuclei ***,a wider evaluation was carried out encompassing the assessment of energy metabolism,haematological and histological parameters,as well as growth *** unequivocally protected against MMS-induced *** activity profile of hepatic lactate and isocitrate dehydrogenases promoted by the supplemented diets reflected an improved energy *** properties were not transferred via fish fed with the algae-supplemented aquafeed,though the transference of phytocomponents with beneficial properties(*** balance improvement)should not be ***,these findings highlighted the genoprotection afforded by marine macroalgae,likely promoted by desmutagenic factors,reinforcing their definition as functional *** possibility of using fish as an indirect source of algae-borne phytocomponents proved to be plausible and worthy of further investigations.

Seaweeds have been a food source since ancient times(600 BC)and are still widely used in Asia,mainly in traditional Chinese medicine and Japanese folk ***,seaweed compounds and extracts have been gaining interest from the biomedical and pharmaceutical market *** have been referenced as feasible solutions in finding new potential compounds and therapies in prevention,control,and reduction of cancer development due to the multirole of some bioactive components(e.g,phenolic compounds and sulphated polysaccharides).Moreover,seaweeds are rich in important health-promoting molecules[such as poly and highly unsaturated fatty acids(PUFAs and HUFAs),essential amino acids,vitamins,and dietary fibers]and minerals(calcium,iron,iodine,magnesium,phosphorus,potassium,zinc,copper,manganese,selenium,and fluoride).In this review,the potential therapeutic effects of seaweed in the prevention and treatment of cancer are approached,as well as nutraceutical properties of seaweed to promote cell homeostasis.

Needle chlorosis(NC)in Pinus taeda *** in Brazil becomes more frequent after second and third harvest rotation *** a study to identify factors contributing to yellowing needle chorosis(YNC),trees were grown in soils originating from contrasting parent materials,and soils and needles(whole,green and chlorotic portions)from 1-and 2-year-old branches and the first and second needle flush release at four sites with YNC on *** were analyzed for various elements and *** soils had very low base levels(Ca^(2+),Mg^(2+)and K^(+))and P,suggesting a possible lack of multiple *** symptoms started at needle tips,then extended toward the needle base with *** flush needles had longer portions with YNC than second flush needles *** from the lower crown also had more symptoms along their length than those higher in the *** were similar to those reported for *** chlorotic portions,Mg and Ca concentrations were well below critical values;in particular,Mg levels were only one third of the critical value of 0.3 g kg^(-1).Collectively,results suggest that Mg deficiency is the primary reason for NC of *** in various parent soils in Brazil.

Gross Chemical Profile and Calculation of Nitrogen-to-Protein Conversion Factors for Five Tropical Seaweeds

Despite decades of research on marine algae, there are still significant gaps in basic knowledge about chemical composition of these organisms, especially in tropical environments. In this study, the amino acid composition and contents of total nitrogen, phosphorus, lipid, carbohydrate and protein were determined in Asparagopsis taxiformis, Centroceras clavulatum, Chaetomorpha aerea, Sargassum filipendula and Spyridia hypnoides. The seaweeds showed low lipid contents (lower than 5.5% d.w. in all species) and were rich in carbohydrates (more than 16% d.w. in all seaweeds). The percentage of nitrogen, phosphorus and protein varied widely among species, which red algae showed the highest con-centrations. The amino acid composition was similar among the seaweeds, which glutamic acid, aspartic acid and leu-cine as the most abundant. All species are poor in histidine. An average of 24.2% of the total nitrogen is non-proteinaceous. From data of total amino acid and total nitrogen, specific nitrogen-to-protein conversion factors were calculated for each species. The nitrogen-to-protein conversion factors calculated ranged from 4.51 to 5.21, with an overall average of 4.86. These findings show that the traditional conversion factor of 6.25 should be avoided for seaweeds, since it overestimates the actual protein content.

This study investigated the action of proteolytic enzymes in the production of goat viscera hydrolysates,and their flavoring *** study focus the production of flavor precursor molecules and the formation of volatile compounds resulting from four hydrolysis treatments:HA-Alcalase®,HF-Flavourzyme®,HN-Neutrase®,and HFN-Flavourzyme® and Neutrase®.The highest degree of hydrolysis (26.74%),number (23 volatiles) and concentration of volatile compounds (274.0 μg/L) were obtained with the action of *** main classes of volatile compounds identified in hydrolysates included acids,aldehydes,pyrazines,terpenes and Streacker *** acids,sugars and fatty acids were identified with higher concentrations in HF and HFN hydrolysates due to the low participation of these precursors in the formation of volatile ***,the use of Alcalase in the proteolysis of goat viscera stood out compared to other enzymes,providing impacting aroma compounds,such as pyrazines,for meat flavor.

Tuberculosis Presenting as Multiple Vein Thrombosis in a Hospitalized Man

Tuberculosis (TB) remains an infectious disease with a high prevalence worldwide and represents a major public health issue. Although venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a rare complication of this disease, it may be a potentially life-threatening event. A 58-year-old man was admitted due to hematemesis due to inflammation at the anastomosis site after a gastrectomy years ago. After 3 days in-hospital, he showed a peroneal deep vein thrombosis and superficial thrombosis of left cephalic vein. Although reduced mobility and lack of prophylactic heparin could explain vein thrombosis, a simple etiologic workup was performed and active tuberculosis was diagnosed. This case illustrates a rare and unusual presentation form of tuberculosis, a condition that remains now-a-days one of the leading infectious causes of death worldwide. The association between tuberculosis and VTE is rare, but it should be systematically investigated.

Drought stress is major abiotic stress that affects soybean ***,it is widely desirable that soybean becomes more tolerant to *** provide insights into regulatory mechanisms of the stress response,we compared the global gene expression profiles from leaves of two soybean genotypes that display different responses to water-deficit(BR 16 and Embrapa 48,drought-sensitive and droughttolerant,respectively).After the RNA-seq analysis,a total of 5335 down-regulated and 3170 up-regulated genes were identified in the *** the other hand,the number of genes differentially expressed was markedly lower in the Embrapa 48,355 up-regulated and 471 down-regulated ***,induction and expression of protein kinases and transcription factors indicated signaling cascades involved in the drought ***,the results suggest that the metabolism of pectin is differently modulated in response to drought stress and may play a role in the soybean defense mechanism against *** occurs via an increase of the cell wall plasticity and crosslink,which contributed to a higher hydraulic conductance(Kf)and relative water content(RWC%).The drought-tolerance mechanism of the Embrapa 48 genotype involves remodeling of the cell wall and increase of the hydraulic conductance to the maintenance of cell turgor and metabolic processes,resulting in the highest leaf RWC,photosynthetic rate(A),transpiration(E)and carboxylation(A/Ci).Thus,we concluded that the cell wall adjustment under drought is important for a more efficient water use which promoted a more active photosynthetic metabolism,maintaining higher plant growth under drought stress.

Dimensioning Urban Drainage Systems in Housing Subdivisions in the Amazon Using Different Hydrological Models

Hydrological studies for sizing urban drainage systems in the Amazon have often been neglected and little investigated for rainwater projects. This research evaluated alternative hydrological models used in sizing urban drainage network projects in subdivisions with subsidized houses in the Amazonian region in Brazil. Statistical tests of these models were performed for both original and alternative scenarios. The methodological steps we conducted as follows: 1) evaluate the dimensioning of infrastructure project networks, considering two case studies contemplated by the Calha Norte Program (CNP) in the state of Amapá;2) test the statistical significance of the dimensioning of network diameters (α onsidering a) benchmark project (MD or M1) approved by the Ministry of Defense;b) determination of concentration time (Ct) and rainfall intensity-duration-frequency (IDF) relationships, as well as estimating diameters using alternative models. The results indicated a significant influence on the diameters of the projected rainfall networks (p odels predicted more unfavorable flow peaks than the original model. We conclude that the benchmarking model underestimated the diameter of the project compared to alternative models, which means the optimized Ct parameter significantly impacts dimensioning estimates in rainwater projects in these Amazonian municipalities. This suggests that underestimated parameters in MD may cause inefficiency in the stormwater system projects in future similar scenarios.

AIM To study the differences in immune response and cytokine profile between acute liver failure and selflimited acute *** Forty-six patients with self-limited acute hepatitis(AH), sixteen patients with acute liver failure(ALF), and twenty-two healthy subjects were involved in this study. The inflammatory and anti-inflammatory products in plasma samples were quantified using commercial enzyme-linked immunoassays and quantitative real-time PCR. The cellular immune responses were measured by proliferation assay using flow cytometry. The groups were divided into viral- and non-viral-induced selflimited AH and ALF. Thus, we worked with five groups: Hepatitis A virus(HAV)-induced self-limited acute hepatitis(HAV-AH), HAV-induced ALF(HAV-ALF), nonviral-induced self-limited acute hepatitis(non-viral AH), non-viral-induced acute liver failure(non-viral ALF), and healthy subjects(HC). Comparisons among HAV and non-viral-induced AH and ALF were *** The levels of mitochondrial DNA(mt DNA) and the cytokines investigated [interleukin(IL)-6, IL-8, IL-10, interferon gamma, and tumor necrosis factor] were significantly increased in ALF patients, independently of etiology(P ociated with ALF [mt DNA: oR = 320.5(95%CI: 14.42-7123.33), P oR = 18.8(95%CI: 1.38-257.94), P = 0.028] and death [mt DNA: oR = 12.1(95%CI: 2.57-57.07), P = 0.002; and IL-10: oR = 8.01(95%CI: 1.26-50.97), P = 0.027]. In the cellular proliferation assay, NK^(bright), NKT and regulatory T cells(TReg) predominated in virusspecific stimulation in HAV-induced ALF patients with an anergic behavior in the cellular response to mitotic stimulation. Therefore, in non-viral-induced ALF, anergic behavior of activated T cells was not observed after mitotic stimulation, as expected and as described by the literature.
