Photocatalytic and electrochemical properties of single-and multi-layer sub-stoichiometric titanium oxide coatings prepared by atmospheric plasma spraying

We studied the photocatalytic and electrochemical impedance properties of two different sub-stoichiometric titania powders deposited using plasma spraying. Two different commercial powders with markedly diverse mean size as well as size distribution were chosen. Thermal oxidation of these as-received powders was carried out to restore the O/Ti ratio to be 2.0. By this way, another two kinds of feedstock powders were obtained. Total of four kinds of feedstock powders were used in the experiments. All powders were sprayed using identical plasma spraying parameters. For some spraying runs, carbon steel served as the substrate, and for others, the previously sprayed titania coating from a different kind of feedstock. Combinations of single- and double-layer coatings were studied. Porosity, microstructure, phase composition, chemical composition, band gap based on reflectance measurement, and photocatalytic activity were examined. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy demonstrated substantial differences between samples sprayed from the fine and coarse powders. Coatings from oxidized powders were slightly more photocatalytic. High spraying distance used for several of them was good for obtaining low band gap, whereas surface roughness and phase composition were not substantially different compared to standard spraying distance coatings.

Radiotherapy with concurrent chemotherapy and surgery represent the main treatment modalities in esophageal *** goal of modern radiotherapy approaches,based on recent technological advances,is to minimize post-treatment complications by improving the gross tumor volume definition (positron emission tomography-based planning),reducing interfraction motion (image-guided radiotherapy) and intrafraction motion (respiratory-gated radiotherapy),and by better dose delivery to the precisely defined planning target volume (intensity-modulated radiotherapy and proton therapy).Reduction of radiotherapy-related toxicity is fundamental to the improvement of clinical results in esophageal cancer,although the dose escalation concept is controversial.

Clinical outcomes of radiofrequency catheter ablation of atrial fibrillation in octogenarians lO-year experience of a one high-volume center

Background Prevalence of atrial fibrillation （AF） increases with age. Radiofrequency catheter ablation （RFCA） is an establishedtreatment option superior to antiarrhythmics （AAs）. In this study, we investigated safety and efficacy of RFCA of AF in *** From our database, we extracted procedural and follow-up data for patients 〉 80 years with symptomatic AF undergoing RFCAand compared this population to RFCA patients 〈 50 years. All patients underwent pulmonary vein isolation （PVI） supplemented by linearlesions in PVI-nonresponders. Arrhythmia-free survival was assessed using seven day Holter every three months post procedure. All patientscompleted their 12 months follow-up. Results Fifty patients aged ≥80 years （80.5 ± 1.6 years） were compared to 259 patients aged 〈 50years （43.5±5.5 years）. The RFCA complication rate did not vary between groups. No differences in procedural characteristics were seenafter being analyzed by type of AF. Among patients with paroxysmal AF, 71.4% octogenarian vs. 84.7% young patients was free of anyarrhythmia, without AAs, after single procedure. For non-paroxysmal AF, arrhythmia-free survival without AAs, was considerably lower（58.6% octogenarians vs. 81.2% younger patients, P = 0.023）. If AAs were used, arrhythmia-free survival for paroxysmal AF increased to90.5% and 92.1% in octogenarians and younger patients, respectively; and in non-paroxysmal AF it increased to 79.3% vs. 88.4%. ConclusionsRFCA is a safe and effective strategy to achieve normal sinus rhythm in a highly selected group of octogenarians. Paroxysmal AF ablation inoctogenarians has similar clinical effectiveness as that seen in much younger patients. Non-paroxysmal AF ablation has lower, but still rea-sonable clinical effectiveness.

Process synthesis with simultaneous consideration of inherent safety-inherent risk footprint

Process plants should be designed to be economically viable and environmentally friendly, while also being operable and maintainable during process implementation. The safety of processes is among the most important considerations in obtaining results that are more acceptably realistic, as it is linked to the availability and reliability of the process. Inherent safety can effectively be enhanced in the early stages of the design, when the main decisions on process design are made. The aim of this study is to enhance and select the appropriate risk assessment method and to incorporate it into process synthesis, using a mathematical programming approach. A mixed-integer, nonlinear programming (MINLP) model was used for the synthesis of a methanol production process, considering risk assessment during the synthesis. Risk assessment is performed simultaneously with the MINLP process synthesis, where the risk is determined either for the whole process as overall risk, or on a per unit-of-a-product basis. For the latter, a new measurement is proposed: the inherent risk footprint. The results of a case study led to two main conclusions: (i) Significantly safer designs can be obtained at negligible economic expense, and (ii) at higher production capacities, a lower inherent risk footprint can be achieved. The results also indicate that designs obtained using this method can have significantly increased inherent safety, while remaining economically viable.

Parameters and design optimization of the ring piezoelectric ceramic transformer

Main aim of the presented paper is the theoretical analysis and experimental verification of the transformation parameters for the new type of nonhomogeneously poled ring *** input part is poled in the thickness direction and output part in the radial *** transformer geometries are studied—the input part is at inner ring segment,or it is at the outer ring *** optimum electrode size aspect ratios have been found experimentally as d_(1)=D≈0:60-0:65 for the ring with aspect ratio d=D¼0:*** fundamental as well as higher overtone resonances were studied for the transformation ratio,the optimum resistive load,efficiency and no-load transformation *** overtones have better transformation parameters compared to the fun-damental *** new type ring transformer exhibits very high transformation ratios up to 200 under no-load and up to 13.4 under a high efficiency of 97%at the optimum load conditions of 10kΩ.Strong electric field gradient at the output circuit is applicable for the electrical discharge generation.

Initial Error Growth and Predictability of Chaotic Low-dimensional Atmospheric Model

The growth of small errors in weather prediction is exponential on average. As an error becomes larger, its growth slows down and then stops with the magnitude of the error saturating at about the average distance between two states chosen *** paper studies the error growth in a low-dimensional atmospheric model before, during and after the initial exponential divergence occurs. We test cubic, quartic and logarithmic hypotheses by ensemble prediction method. Furthermore, the quadratic hypothesis suggested by Lorenz in 1969 is compared with the ensemble prediction method. The study shows that a small error growth is best modeled by the quadratic hypothesis. After the error exceeds about a half of the average value of variables, logarithmic approximation becomes superior. It is also shown that the time length of the exponential growth in the model data is a function of the size of small initial error and the largest Lyapunov exponent. We conclude that the size of the error at the least upper bound(supremum) of time length is equal to 1 and it is invariant to these variables. Predictability, as a time interval, where the model error is growing, is for small initial error, the sum of the least upper bound of time interval of exponential growth and predictability for the size of initial error equal to 1.

The effect of neodymium substitution on the structural and magnetic properties of nickel ferrite

Nickel ferrite Ni Fe2O4 is a typical soft magnetic ferrite with high electrical resistivity used as high frequency magnetic material. Neodymium(Nd3+) doped Ni Fe2O4 materials were fabricated using solid state reaction. The properties of the obtained material were investigated by X-Ray Diffraction(XRD), Scanning Electron Microscope(SEM), Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy(FT-IR), magnetic measurements on SQUID and M?ssbauer spectroscopy. It was found that the material consists of two different phases: Nd3+doped Ni Fet2O4and Nd Fe O3. The Nd3 ions occupy cation sites of the Ni Fe2O4 inverse spinel structure. NdFeO3 phase occurred when the level of Nd3+atoms exceed a percolation *** presence of both phases was confirmed by SEM observations. The M?ssbauer spectra analysis showed two sextets, which can be ascribed to iron atoms in tetrahedral and octahedral positions. From their intensities it is concluded that Nd3+occupies octahedral sites in the spinel structure of Ni Fe2O4, which were originally occupied by Ni2+.

Targeting mitochondria as an anticancer strategy

Mitochondrial metabolism and cancer development Mitochondria are organelles controlling adenosine triphosphate(ATP)generation,redox homeostasis,met-abolic signaling,and apoptotic *** gly-colysis was traditionally considered as the major source of energy in cancer cells,in-line with the so-called“Warburg effect”,mitochondria have been recognized to play a key role in oncogenesis[1].Cancer cells uniquely reprogram their cellular activities to support their rapid proliferation and migration,as well as to counteract met-abolic and genotoxic stress during cancer progression[2].Further,mitochondria can switch their metabolic phe-notypes to meet the challenges of high energy demand and macromolecular synthesis[3].Thus,cancer mito-chondria have the ability to flexibly switching between glycolysis and oxidative phosphorylation(OXPHOS)for their *** electron transport chain(ETC)func-tion is pivotal for mitochondrial respiration,which is also needed for dihydroorotate dehydrogenase(DHODH)activity that is essential for de novo pyrimidine synthe-sis[4].Recent researches have demonstrated that cancer cells devoid of mitochondrial DNA(mtDNA)lack their tumorigenic potential,and they re-gain this ability by acquiring healthy mtDNA from the host stromal cells via horizontal transfer of whole mitochondria[5,6]for recovery of the respiratory ***,respi-ration propels DHODH activity for pyrimidine biosyn-thesis[7].Therefore,targeting mitochondria holds great potential for anticancer strategy with high therapeutic opportunities.
