Nutritional factors and gastric cancer in Zhoushan Islands, China

AIM: To investigate the association between nutrient intakes and high incidence rate of gastric cancer among residents in Zhoushan ***: A frequency-matched design of case-control study was used during the survey on dietary factors and gastric cancer in Zhoushan Islands, China. A total of 103 cases of gastric cancer diagnosed in 2001 were included in the study and 133 controls were randomly selected from the residents in Zhoushan Islands. A food frequency questionnaire was specifically designed for the Chinese dietary pattern to collect information on dietary intake. A computerized database of the dietary and other relative information of each participant was completed. Total calories and 15 nutrients were calculated according to the food composition table and their adjusted odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were estimated by gender using unconditional logistic regression ***: High intakes of protein, saturated fat, and cholesterol were observed with the increased risk of gastric cancer particularly among males (ORQ4 vsQ1 were 10.3, 3.24, 2.76 respectively). While carbohydrate was a significant high-risk nutrient (ORQ4 vsQ1 = 14.8; Pfor linear trend = 0.024) among females. Regardless of their gender, the cases reported significantly higher daily intake of sodium mainly from salts. As to the nutrients of vitamins A and C, an inversed association with the risk of GC was found. Baseline characteristics of participants were briefly ***: The findings from this study confirm the role of diet-related exposure in the etiology of gastric cancer from the point of view of epidemiology. An increased risk of gastric cancer is associated with high intakes of protein, saturated fat, cholesterol and sodium,while consumption of polyunsaturated fat, vitamin A and ascorbic acid may have a protective effect against gastric cancer.

Meta analysis of risk factors for colorectal cancer

AIM: To study the risk factors for colorectal cancer in ***: A meta-analysis of the risk factors of colorectal cancer was conducted for 14 case-control studies, and reviewed 14 reports within 13 years which included 5034cases and 5205 controls. Dersimonian and Laird random effective models were used to process the ***: Meta analysis of the 14 studies demonstrated that proper physical activites and dietary fibers were protective factors (pooled OR＜0.8), while fecal mucohemorrhage,chronic diarrhea and polyposis were highly associated with colorectal cancer (all pooled OR＞4). The stratified results showed that different OR values of some factors were due to geographic factors or different ***: Risks of colorectal cancer are significantly associated with the histories of intestinal diseases or relative symptoms, high lipid diet, emotional trauma and family history of cancers. The suitable physical activities and dietary fibers are protective factors.

Potassium and calcium channels in different nerve cells act as therapeutic targets in neurological disorders

The central nervous system, information integration center of the body, is mainly composed of neurons and glial cells. The neuron is one of the most basic and important structural and functional units of the central nervous system, with sensory stimulation and excitation conduction functions. Astrocytes and microglia belong to the glial cell family, which is the main source of cytokines and represents the main defense system of the central nervous system. Nerve cells undergo neurotransmission or gliotransmission, which regulates neuronal activity via the ion channels, receptors, or transporters expressed on nerve cell membranes. Ion channels, composed of large transmembrane proteins, play crucial roles in maintaining nerve cell homeostasis. These channels are also important for control of the membrane potential and in the secretion of neurotransmitters. A variety of cellular functions and life activities, including functional regulation of the central nervous system, the generation and conduction of nerve excitation, the occurrence of receptor potential, heart pulsation, smooth muscle peristalsis, skeletal muscle contraction, and hormone secretion, are closely related to ion channels associated with passive transmembrane transport. Two types of ion channels in the central nervous system, potassium channels and calcium channels, are closely related to various neurological disorders, including Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and epilepsy. Accordingly, various drugs that can affect these ion channels have been explored deeply to provide new directions for the treatment of these neurological disorders. In this review, we focus on the functions of potassium and calcium ion channels in different nerve cells and their involvement in neurological disorders such as Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, depression, epilepsy, autism, and rare disorders. Coordinated observations of large scale coronal brightening and H_αsurge

During the post_flare phase of an eruptive two_ribbon flare on February 4, 1995, the Soft X_ray Telescope (SXT) on board Yohkoh observed the rapid brightening of a set of large scale coronal loops (150-200 Mm in length). Simultaneously, coordinated ground_based observations reveal a co_incident H α surge event. To our knowledge, no H α surge event coincident with the large scale coronal brightening observed by Yohkoh has been reported. The possible mechanisms for the concurrent cool plasma ejection and the filling of the hot coronal loops are discussed. It is found that magnetic reconnection between a magnetic arcade and an overlying large scale coronal structure may account for the coincident events. Big amount of magnetic energy was converted into both mechanic energy (about 10 22 J) in the mass ejection and thermal radiation (10 23 J) contained in the large SXR loops.
