Effects of dietary supplementation of bacteriophage cocktail on health status of weanling pigs in a non-sanitary environment

Background The study evaluated the effects of bacteriophage cocktail(BP)and ZnO administered during weaning time for piglets exposed to a non-sanitary environment.The bacteriophages were designed to eliminate Escherichia coli(K88,K99 and F41),Salmonella(typhimurium and enteritidis),and Clostridium perfreingens(types A and C).Forty 21-day-old crossbreed piglets were assigned to four treatments,including the PC(sanitary environment),NC(nonsanitary environment),BP(NC plus 108 pfu/kg BP),and ZO(NC plus 2,500 mg/kg ZnO).Piglets in the NC,BP and ZO were kept in a non-sanitary environment for 14 d,which was contaminated with the feces of infected pigs.Results Pigs in the BP and ZO treatments had a higher final body weight compared with the NC.The NC treatment showed the highest concentration of inflammatory cytokines including interleukin(IL)-1β,IL-6 and tumor necrosis factor-αin the plasma.The administration of BP and ZO showed lower myeloperoxidase concentrations compared with the NC.The NC treatment showed a lower concentration of superoxide dismutase in serum compared with the PC.Among the treatments in non-sanitary environment,the NC treatment showed a higher concentration of malondialdehyde compared with the ZO.The PC treatment showed a lower concentration of butyric acid in the feces compared with the BP treatment.Among non-sanitary treatments,the villus height in the duodenum was greater in the BP and ZO compared with the NC.The lower abundance of Proteobacteria phylum was observed in the BP and PC treatments compared with the NC.The highest relative abundance of Eubacterium was recorded in the BP treatment.The abundance of Megasphaera and Schwartzia was higher in the NC pigs compared with the BP piglets.The abundance of Desulfovibrio was lower in the supplemented treatments(BP and ZO)compared with non-supplemented(NC and PC).The abundance of Cellulosilyticum genera was higher in the BP and ZO treatments rather than in the NC.The piglets in the NC treatment had the highest abundance of Escherichia-Shigella,follo

Preventing condensation of objective lens in noncontact wide-angle viewing systems during vitrectomy

AIM： To assess the optimal conditions for preventing condensation of objective lens during vitrectomy with noncontact wide-angle viewing systems（WAVSs）. METHODS： We explored the effectiveness of the coating with ophthalmic viscoelastic device（OVDs） on the corneal surface and the soaking the objective lens in warm-saline for preventing condensation of objective lens. First, to find the optimal soaking time to keep the objective lens warm, we measured the temperature of objective lens every minute after soaking in warm saline. Second, to find optimal distance between cornea and objective lens, which provide as wide a view as possible and less condensation at the same time, we measured the condensation time with different distances. With the obtained optimal soaking time and distance, we explored the effect of coating cornea with OVDs and soaking objective lens in warm saline on condensation time.RESULTS： One and 5 min of soaking in warm saline was most effective for keeping the lens warm enough（45.1℃±2.1℃ for 1 min and 46.4℃±1.0℃ for 5 min, P=0.109）. The mean condensation times for the control group at 1, 3, and 5 mm from corneal surface to objective lens were 1±0.4, 4±1.4, 190±26.1 s, respectively, thus 5 mm was most optimal distance for vitrectomy with WAVSs. For the OVD coating group, the mean condensation times were 1.5±0.3, 13±1.4, and 200±23.9 s at 1, 3, and 5 mm distance and borderline significant compared with control group（P=0.068, 0.051, and 0.063, respectively）. With the 1-minute warm saline soaking group, the mean condensation time were extended to 188±34.4, 416±65.7, and 600±121.3 s at 1, 3, and 5 mm distance and statistically significant compared with control（P=0.043, 0.041 and 0.043, respectively）.CONCLUSION： OVD coating on corneal surface shows no difference on condensation time with control group. However, soaking the objective lens in warm saline revealed statistically significant extension of condensation time compared to control group. To the Editor:Transmuscular quadratus lumborum block(TQLB)is known to provide visceral analgesia by blocking sympathetic fibers by spreading into the thoracic paravertebral spaces.[1]It is relatively safer than other conventional methods of analgesia.However,to our knowledge,there have been no reports of hoarseness associated with TQLB.Herein,we report two cases of hoarseness and discomfort to the throat after TQLB.

A new method to create depth information based on lighting analysis for 2D/3D conversion

A new method creating depth information for 2D/3D conversion was proposed. The distance between objects is determined by the distances between objects and light source position which is estimated by the analysis of the image. The estimated lighting value is used to normalize the image. A threshold value is determined by some weighted operation between the original image and the normalized image. By applying the threshold value to the original image, background area is removed. Depth information of interested area is calculated from the lighting changes. The final 3D images converted with the proposed method are used to verify its effectiveness.

Nematodes play an important role in ecosystems;however,very little is known about their assembly processes and the factors influencing them.We studied nematode communities in bulk soils from three Asian mountain ecosystems to determine the assembly processes of free-living nematode metacommunities and their driving factors.On each mountain,elevations span a range of climatic conditions with the potential to reveal assembly processes that predominate across multiple biomes.A phylogenetic null modeling framework was used to analyze 18S rRNA gene amplicons to quantify various assembly processes.We found that phylogenetic turnover between nematode communities on all mountains was dominated by stochastic processes,with“undominated processes”being the most predominant stochastic factor.Elevation has a significant impact on the relative importance of deterministic and stochastic processes.A variety of climatic and edaphic variables significantly influenced the variations in community assembly processes with elevation,even though their impacts were not consistent between the mountains.Overall,our results indicate that free-living nematode metacommunities in a wide range of environments are largely structured by stochastic processes rather than by niche-based deterministic processes,suggesting that metacommunities of soil free-living nematodes may respond to climate change in a largely unpredictable way.

Removal of Ammonia from Wastewater Effluent by Chlorella Vulgaris

The capability of Chlorella vulgaris to remove nitrogen in the form of ammonia and/or ammonium ions from wastewater effluent in a local wastewater treatment plant （i.e., the Mill Creek Plant in Cincinnati, Ohio, U.S.A.） was studied. The wastewater effluent leaving the plant was found to include high concentra- tions of nitrogen （7.7±0.19 mg/L）（ammonia （NH3） and/or ammonium ion （NH4＋）） and total inorganic carbon （58.6±0.28 mg/L） at pH 7, and to be suitable for growing Chlorella vulgaris. When Chlorella vulgaris was cul- tivated in a batch mode under a closed system, half of the nitrogen concentration was dramatically removed in 48 h after a 24-h lag-phase period. Total inorganic carbon concentration also concomitantly decreased during the rapid growth-phase. The total biomass weight gained during the entire cultivation period balanced out well with the total amount of inorganic carbon and nitrogen removed from the culture medium. These results indicate that wastewater can be synergistically used to polish residual nutrients in wastewater as well as to cultivate microalgae for biofuel production.

The sloshing of the liquid in the spacecraft causes the oscillation of the spacecraft. It is important to predict the dynamics of the liquids so that the orientation of the space can be controlled. This study analyzed the dynamics of the liquid in the spacecraft. It includes the behavior of fluids, such as sloshing of the fluid in the fuel tank after the spacecraft is fired and the impact between the liquid and the fuel tank. Conventionally, the moving space of the liquid should be predicted and meshed by the CFD software. The pre-process cost much time, and the much more computational time is needed when the boundary conditions change. Fortunately, a mesh free method is used in this study. It is called the MPS(Moving Particle Semi-implicit) method which uses the continuity equation and Navier-Stokes Equation as basic equations, but discretizes the liquid into particles using gradient equation and Laplacian equation. It is not necessary to reconstruct the grid during the analysis and it can be reduced to a minimum area for a wide range of analysis areas. In this study, the software Particleworks equipped with this MPS method is used to analyze the dynamics of the liquid in the spacecraft. The liquid is created using MPS method in Particleworks, and the model of the fuel tank is created using Recur Dyn, which defines the motion of the fuel tank easily. The dynamics of the fluid is analyzed from the moment of launch to the designated pathway by liquid-solid coupling methodology.

Bootstrap generated confidence interval for time averaged measure

In the simulation output analysis,there are some measures that should be calculated by time average concept such as the mean queue length.Especially,the confidence interval of those measures might be required for statistical analysis.In this situation,the traditional method that utilizes the central limit theorem(CLT)is inapplicable if the output data set has autocorrelation structure.The bootstrap is one of the most suitable methods which can reflect the autocorrelated phenomena in statistical analysis.Therefore,the confidence interval for a time averaged measure having autocorrelation structure can also be calculated by the bootstrap methods.This study introduces the method that constructs these confidence intervals applying the bootstraps.The bootstraps proposed are the threshold bootstrap(TB),the moving block bootstrap(MBB)and stationary bootstrap(SB).Finally,some numerical examples will be provided for verification.

A case study of customer satisfaction for information technology solutions

There are numerous information technology solutions including hardware and software. A company that provides the solution should have knowledge of the customer needs in the purpose of sailing strategy or upgrade policy. The needs are also directly connected to the user satisfaction. However, the users have respective points of view in the needs as well as they may not identify the requirements to improve the solution. SERVQUAL can be an appropriate method to define and measure the customer satisfaction for the information technology solutions. As a case study of the customer satisfaction, the modified SERVQUAL items and scoring method are applied to a cyber-infrastructure system named CyberL ab in Korea. The measurement results of user satisfaction for CyberL ab are provided to confirm that our proposed method performs as we intended. From the results, we can score the satisfaction level of users and identify their needs in the various aspects. The total user satisfaction level for CyberL ab is scored by 88.3.

Surgical treatment outcomes of primary hepatic sarcomas: A singlecenter experience

BACKGROUND Primary hepatic sarcoma is a rare tumor originated from mesenchymal tissue.There are various pathologic types of primary hepatic sarcoma and the treatment outcome of this tumor was usually disappointing.Unlike hepatocellular carcinoma,outcome of primary hepatic sarcoma is not well-known due to it’s rarity.However,with development of medical technology,surgical treatment may lead to better survival.AIM To investigate the surgical outcomes of primary hepatic sarcoma,we gathered and analyzed the cases of a single institute.METHODS From August 2001 to September 2016,a total of nine patients were surgically treated for primary hepatic sarcoma after exclusion of cases with open and closure,early loss to follow-up and sarcomatoid hepatocellular carcinoma and sarcomatoid cholangiocellular carcinoma.Baseline characteristics,tumor characteristics such as tumor pathology,size and number,surgical and adjuvant treatments were reviewed.Tumor recurrence,and patient survival were analyzed with retrospective approach.RESULTS The enrolled participants included five patients with angiosarcoma and four patients with undifferentiated sarcoma.All patients experienced tumor recurrence at a median of 52 post-operative days.Only two patients survived and the 5-year survival rate was 29.6%.One patient with angiosarcoma who received central hepatectomy for primary tumor and received radiofrequency ablation for recurrent tumor still lives for 11 years.One patient with undifferentiated sarcoma received Rt.lobectomy for primary tumor followed by chemotherapy and radiation therapy still lives around 30 mo even though she got additional operation for recurrent tumor.Two patients who received living donor liver transplantation due to angiosarcoma died.Only adjuvant therapy was associated with survival gain(P=0.002).CONCLUSION Patients with primary hepatic sarcoma may gain survival benefit with surgical resection followed by adjuvant therapy,even though the outcome remains relatively poor.
