The mismatch in thermal expansion coefficients between the fiber-rich and resin-rich regions of a shape memory polymer composite(SMPC)laminate,along with the residual strain during SMPC fabrication,results in buckling deformation of the inhomogeneous laminate.This paper presents a macroscopic model for buckling of an inhomogeneous SMPC laminate under initial biaxial prestrains.Both linear and nonlinear buckling analyses are carried out using the energy method.The influences of prestrain biaxiality,temperature,and ply angle on the buckling wavelength,critical buckling prestrain,and buckling amplitude are calculated.The results demonstrate that the critical buckling wavelength of the SMPC laminate is independent of the prestrain,while the amplitude is almost independent of temperature.In addition,the optimal fiber stacking configuration with the maximum critical buckling prestrains of inhomogeneous SMPC laminates is determined by a genetic algorithm.

Shape memory polymers(SMPs)have historically attracted attention for their unique stimulation-responsive and variable stifness and have made notable progress in acrospace,civil industry,and other fields.In particular,epoxy resin(EP)has great potential due to its excellent mechanical properties,fatigue resistance,and radiation resistance.Herein,we focus on the molecular design and network construction of shape memory epoxy resins(SMEPs)to provide opportunities for performance and functional regulation.Multifunctional and high-performance SMEPs are introduced in detail,including multiple SMEPs,two-way SMEPs,outstanding toughness,and termperature resistance.Finally,emerging applications of SMEP's and their composites in aerospace,four-dimensional printing,and self-healing are dermonstrated.Based on this,we point out the challenges ahead and how SMEPs can integrate performance and versatility to meet the needs of technological development.

Shape memory polymers,with intrinsic enhanced strength and high thermal stability,are highly demanded in aerospace,engineering manufacturing,and spatial structures.In this paper,we develop a series of thermoplastic shape memory poly(ether ether ketone)s(PEEKs)for the first time,achieving an excellent shape memory ability,high strength,and great thermal stability via a condensation polymerization.Through tuning the proportion of different bisphenol monomers,the flexibility of molecular main chains is adjusted,resulting in the regulation of transition temperature and mechanical performances.Synthesized PEEKs possess the tunable T_(g) from 143.3°C to 178.6°C,the enhanced tensile strength from 48.4 to 65.1 MPa,and Young’s modulus from 0.45 to 1.8 GPa,in addition to the excellent heat-triggered shape memory effect,as indicated by high recovery ratio(94%–98.9%)and fixity ratio(over 99.5%).Furthermore,after incorporating the magnetocaloric Fe_(3)O_(4) particles,the composites exhibit remotely noncontact magnetic-triggered shape memory behaviors(Fe_(3)O_(4) content over 10 wt%).These synthesized T_(g) tunable shape memory PEEKs and the composites have wide utilization potential in fields of engineering and aerospace structures,owing to the excellent mechanical properties,thermal stability,unique programmable deformation ability,and remote actuation.

Shape memory polymer(SMP)is a kind of material that can sense and respond to the changes of the external environment,and its behavior is similar to the intelligent refection of life.Electrospinning,as a versatile and feasible technique,has been used to prepare shape memory polymer fbers(SMPFs)and expand their structures.SMPFs show some advanced features and functions in many felds.In this review,we give a comprehensive overview of SMPFs,including materials,fabrication methods,structures,multifunction,and applications.Firstly,the mechanism and characteristics of SMP are introduced.We then discuss the electrospinning method to form various microstructures,like non-woven fbers,core/shell fbers,hollow fbers and oriented fbers.Afterward,the multiple functions of SMPFs are discussed,such as multi-shape memory efect,reversible shape memory efect and remote actuation of composites.We also focus on some typical applications of SMPFs,including biomedical scafolds,drug carriers,self-healing,smart textiles and sensors,as well as energy harvesting devices.At the end,the challenges and future development directions of SMPFs are proposed.

Shape recovery properties and load-carrying capacity of a 4D printed thick-walled kirigami-inspired honeycomb structure

Kirigami arts have provided a more promising method for building multiscale structures,which can shape two-dimensional(2D)sheets into three-dimensional(3D)configurations by cutting and folding.Here,we first carried out a theoretical analysis of the mechanical properties of 2D honeycomb lattice structures and experimental verification combined with finite element(FE)simulation.Furthermore,a series of thick-walled 3D kirigami-inspired honeycomb(TW3KH)structures with different mechanical properties were designed and fabricated on the exploration and optimization of geometric parameters of 2D honeycomb structures.The investigations of folding feasibility,self-expansion,and self-folding performance experimentally showed that our designed four-dimensional(4D)printing structure had good programmability and shape memory capability and a large volume change ratio during shape change.Meanwhile,research on its compression deformation behavior found that the TW3KH structures can recover load-bearing capacity very well when the angle is positive.Therefore,these TW3KH structures have great advantages in space-saving smart load-bearing equipment.

A bio-inspired 3D metamaterials with chirality and anti-chirality topology fabricated by 4D printing

Artificial architected metamaterials equipped with unique mechanical and physical properties that are naturally inaccessible can be obtained by rational design.In this work,the innovative three-dimensional(3D)chiral and anti-chiral metamaterials are developed referring to the face-rotating polyhedral(FRP)structure present in the virus.Through assembling planar triangular units into the regular octahedron cells,several typical forms of chiral and anti-chiral metamaterials can be obtained by different assembly methods.By changing the topology parameters,the Poisson’s ratio can be adjusted between[0,2.8].The metamaterials are fabricated by 3D printing utilizing shape memory polymer,and the mechanical properties are analyzed via Finite Element Analysis(FEA)and experiments,including Young’s modulus,Poisson’s ratio,and tension-twist coupling behavior.In addition,target metamaterial with specific local deformation behavior is obtained by programmatic calculations and distributions to meet special requirements or achieve unique applications.The shape memory property endows the mechanical metamaterials with more potential applications.

Stent placement is an effective palliation therapy for malignant colorectal obstruction.However,recurrent obstruction is a common severe complication caused by tumor ingrowth into the stent lumen.Conventional covered stents play a part in preventing the tumor from growing inward but at the expense of significantly increasing the risk of stent migration.Therefore,there is an urgent demand to develop stents with sustained antitumor and antimigration abilities.Herein,we propose a facile method for fabricating multifunctional bioinspired colorectal stents using 3D printing technology.Inspired by high-adhesion biological structures(gecko feet,tree frog toe pads,and octopus suckers)in nature,different types of bioinspired colorectal stents are designed to reduce migration.After functionalization with graphene oxide(GO),bioinspired colorectal stents show excellent and controllable photothermal performance,which is validated by effective ablation of colon cancer cells in vitro and tumors in vivo.Besides,the bioinspired colorectal stents demonstrate the feasibility of transanal placement and opening of the obstructed colon.More importantly,the facile manufacturing process of multifunctional bioinspired colorectal stents is appealing for mass production,Hence,the developed multifunctional bioinspired colorectal stents exhibit a highly promising potential in clinical applications.

Research on microcapsules has been conducted in recent years given trends in miniaturization and novel functionalization.In this work,we designed and prepared a series of unique shape memory polyurethane(SMPU)microcapsules with stimuli-responsive func-tions.The microcapsule has a core-shell structure in which the surface morphology can be adjusted,and it has a certain loadbearing capacity.In addition,the SMPU microcapsule has a stimuliresponsive function for shape memory and solvent response.The temperature of its shape recovery is approximately body tempera-ture,and it can swell to rupture under the stimulation of organic solvents.Thus,the SMPU microcapsule has potential applications in biomedical fields,such as drug release.

Micro-and nano-fibers of shape memory polymers(SMP)offer multiple advantages like high specific surface area,poros-ity,and intelligence,and are suitable for biomedical applications.In this study,biodegradable poly(p-dioxanone)(PPDO)materials were incorporated to improve the brittleness of shape memory polylactic acid(PLA),and plasticizers were used to reduce the transition temperature of SMP composites such that their transitions could be induced close to body temperature.Furthermore,an electrostatic spinning technology was applied to prepare SMP fibers with wrinkled structures and regulate their microstructures and morphologies such that the intelligent transition of wrinkled and smooth morphologies can be achieved on the fiber surface.The application of this controllable-morphology fiber membrane in intelligent controlled drug release and scar inhibition after Ahmed Glaucoma Valve(AGV)implantation was also studied.The drug release from the stretched and deformed drug-loaded fiber membranes was faster than those from membranes with the original shape.This membrane with micro-and nano-fibers had good anti-scarring effects that improved after drug loading.The achievement of intelligent controlled drug release and the evident anti-scarring effects of the membrane broaden the application of SMP fibers in the biomedical field.

Thermoelectromechanical instability of dielectric elastomer undergoes polarization saturation and temperature variation

When the electric field caused by voltage reaches a certain level,the charge on the compliant electrodes will not increase owing to the polarization saturation,which would limit the deformation of the dielectric elastomer.Some experiments show that temperature also has a significant effect on the deformation of dielectric elastomer.In this work,a free energy model coupling temperature and polarization saturation is developed to characterize the thermoelectromechanical instability of dielectric elastomer.The results reveal that both the polarization saturation parameters and electric field have a significant influence on the actuation ability of the dielectric elastomer,and the increase of temperature enhances thermoelectromechanical stability.It is hoped that this work could guide the development of dielectric elastomer materials and application devices operating in variable temperatures.
