Assessment of Plant-Driven Mineral Weathering in an Aggrading Forested Watershed in Subtropical China

Plant growth contributes to mineral weathering, but this contribution remains poorly understood. Weathering rates in an aggrading forested watershed in subtropical China were studied by means of geochemical mass balance. Rainfall, dry deposition, and streamwater were monitored from March 2007 to February 2012. Samples of vegetative components, rainfall, dry deposition, streamwater, representative soils, and parent rock were collected and determined for mass balance calculation and clarifying plant-driven weathering mechanisms stoichiometrically. Ignoring biomass, weathering rates of Ca^2＋, Mg^2＋, Na^＋, and Si were 25.6, 10.7, 2.8, and 51.0 kg ha^-1 year^-1, respectively. Taking biomass into consideration, weathering rates of Ca^2＋, Mg^2＋, and Si and the sum of weathering rates of Ca^2＋, Mg^2＋, Na^＋, K^＋, and Si were 2.6, 1.8, 1.2, and 1.5-fold higher than those ignoring biomass, respectively. This is attributed to plant-driven weathering due to the nutrient （e.g., Ca^2＋, Mg^2＋, and K^＋） absorption by vegetation and substantial proton production during assimilation of these nutrients, with the former acting as a pump for removing weathering products and the latter being a source of weathering agents solubilizing mineral components. The same pattern of weathering, i.e., higher rates of weathering with than without including biomass in mass balance calculation, was reported in previous studies; however, the extent to which plants drive weathering rates varied with vegetation types and climatic zones. The documented biological weathering driven by plants is expected to play a critical role in regulating nutrient cycling and material flows within the Earth＇s Critical Zone.

Nutrient Discharges from a Typical Watershed in the Hilly Area of Subtropical China

Agriculture is still the biggest contributor of non-point source (NPS) pollution to water bodies andrunoff discharges of nutrients and other chemicals are one of the most important pathways. This studywas conducted during 1998～1999 in a typical watershed with complex agriculture and forestry systems aswell as dotted farmer villages, in a transitional region between the mid- and northern subtropical zones ofChina. Continuous sampling of stream water was performed regularly at a weekly frequency, with additionalsampling after all major rainfall events. The discharges of N and P nutrients and suspended materials weremeasured and the total and area-averaged annual discharges of all components were calculated. The resultsshowed an uneven seasonal distribution of nutrient discharges with summer storms contributing most tothe total fluxes. This study demonstrated a high dependence of runoff volume on rainfall but the overallrunoff coefficients were dependent on land use type and watershed size. The area-averaged annual dischargesvaried greatly among the sub-watersheds with different sizes and land use structures. This is the first studyestimating the area-averaged annual discharges of N and P in the hilly areas of subtropical China, which were1.5 g m-2 a-1 and 0.1 g m-2 a-1, respectively, providing important reference values for the assessment ofregional agricultural non-point source pollution.

Qualitative and Quantitative Analysis of Flidersiachromones in Three Agarwood Samples by HPLC-MS/MS

HPLC/ESI/MS2 was used in the qualitative and quantitative analysis of flidersiachromones（FTPECs） in three agarwood samples ofAquilaria sinensis, including an artificial holing agarwood, a wild agarwood, and a high quality agarwood named ＂Qi Nan＂. From these three agarwood samples, totally forty-six FTPECs were identified, and twenty-five of which were tentatively identified by the analysis of MS fragmentation ions, the others were indentiffed via comparing the retention time and MS fragmentation ions of them with those of the reference compounds. Besides, quantitative determination of five characteristic FTPECs（F14, F16 and F18-F20） in the three agarwoods was carried out, and it was found that the absolute content of each compound of these five FTPECs showed positive correlation with the quality of agarwood samples. Due to the wide distribution of four of these FTPECs（F16 and F18-F20） in the chemical constituents of agarwood, it is suggested that the total absolute content of these four FTPECs may be set as one of basis for agarwood quality evaluation.

Reliability testing of a 3D encapsulated VHF MEMS resonator

The frequency stability of a three-dimensional（3D） vacuum encapsulated very high frequency（VHF）disk resonator is systematically investigated. For eliminating the parasitic effect caused by the parasitic capacitance of the printed circuit board（PCB）, a negating capacitive compensation method was developed. The testing results implemented at 25 ℃ for 240 h for the long-term stability indicates that the resonant frequency variation remained within ±1 ppm and the noise floor derived from Allan Deviation was 26 ppb, which is competitive with the conventional quartz resonators. The resonant frequency fluctuation of 1.5 ppm was obtained during 200 temperature cycling between -40 and 85 ℃.

Comparison of Five Selection Procedures for Seed Coat and Hilum Color in Interspecific Crossing of Soybeans

Five selection procedures for seed coat and hilum color were studied with F4 progenies in two interspecific crossing of soybeans. The seed coat and hilum color indicated that pedigree, 5% and 10% mass selection method were equally successful, and were better than picking-pod and 25% mass selection in cross S17. However, no significant differences in seed coat and hilum color were found in cross G18.

Metabolic engineering of yeasts for green and sustainable production of bioactive ginsenosides F2 and 3β,20S-Di-O-Glc-DM

Background： Human Cytomegalovirus（HCMV） infections can be found throughout the body, especially in epithelial tissue. Animal model was established by inoculation of HCMV（strain AD-169） or coinoculation with Hepatitis E virus（HEV） into the ligated sacculus rotundus and vermiform appendix in living rabbits. The specimens were collected from animals sacrificed 1 and a half hours after ***： The virus was found to be capable of reproducing in these specimens through RT-PCR and *** inflammation damage was found in HCMV-infected tissue. The viral protein could be detected in high amounts in the mucosal epithelium and lamina propria by immunohistochemistry and ***, there are strong positive signals in lymphocytes, macrophages, and lymphoid follicles. Quantitative statistics indicate that lymphocytes among epithlium cells increased significantly in viral infection ***： The results showed that HCMV or HEV ＋ HCMV can efficiently infect in rabbits by vivo ligated intestine loop inoculation. The present study successfully developed an infective model in vivo rabbit ligated intestinal Loop for HCMV pathogenesis study. This rabbit model can be helpful for understanding modulation of the gut immune system with HCMV infection.

Synthesis and structure of Cu_5(BTA)_6(TTA)_4·5DMF, a copper-nitrogen cluster containing η~3-benzotriazolate

The title cluster compound-Cu5(BTA)6(TT-A)4·5DMF was prepared using thenyltrifluoroacetone and benzotriazolate ligands. The crystal structure indicates that a tetrahedral array of Cu(l), Cu(2), Cu(3) and Cu(4) ions surrounding a central Cu(5) ion are held together by bridging tridentate BTA- and terminated by TTA- bond cap. The three nitrogen atoms of a BTA- bond three different copper ions to form a η3-benzotriazolate. The central Cu ion has a distorted octahedral structure and the surrounding Cu ions are 5 coordinated forming distorted tetragonal structures. The distances between the surrounding Cu(Ⅱ) ions and the central Cu(Ⅱ) ion are in the range of 0.3561-0.3755 nm and those between the surrounding Cu(Ⅱ) ions are in the range of 0.5785-0.6301nm.

A Pilot Study of Chronochemotherapy for Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma

OBJECTIVE To investigate the role of chronochemotherapy in the treatment of nasopharyngeal carcinoma （NPC）. METHODS Sixty NPC patients were randomly designated for induction chrono-chemotherapy plus radiotherapy （CC, 30 patients） or for induction routine-chemotherapy plus radiotherapy （RC, 30 patients）. The differences in immediate response, side effects and changes in immunologic parameters between these two groups were analyzed. The chemotherapy regimen of the CC group consisted of cisplatin （DDP） 80 mg/m^2 d1 at 10：00-22：00 h, 5-flurouracil （5-FU） 750 mg/m^2/d1-3 at 22：00-10：00 on the next day and 5-CHO-FH4 （CF） 200 mg/m^2/d1-3 starting at 10：00 h, and repeated every 14 days. The regimen of the RC group was the same as the CC group, with the delivery of cisplatin at a conventional rate and the CF via a continuous 24 h venous injection. The radiotherapy regimen was same in the two groups. RESULTS The complete response rates for the CC and RC groups were 36.7% and 20.0%, respectively（P〈0.05）and the response rates （complete response＋partial response ） were 96.7% and 73.3% respectively. The grade I and II myelosuppression was more serious in the RC group, with rates of 43.3% and 70% in the CC and RC groups （P〈0.05） respectively. The differences in CD3, CD4, CD3/CD8, T＋B＋NK and CD8 cell levels between before and after treatment of the CC group were significant （P〈 0.05）, but differences in the RC group were not significant. CONCLUSION The immediate therapeutic response is better with concurrent chronochemotherapy plus radiotherapy and there are fewer side effect compared to concurrent routine-chemotherapy plus radiotherapy.

依据超强台风"利奇马"的强度和时空演变特征,本文采用经验模态分解等方法系统地分析并揭示了该台风对我国东南沿海地区钻孔体应变影响的全貌,并在此基础上对台风扰动的机制进行了初步探讨。结果表明:①台风演变过程中漏斗状的长周期气压波动,是造成钻孔体应变大幅张性变化的物理成因,且体应变对台风低压系统具有即时的线弹性响应特征,其变化形态与气压漏斗高度相似,弹性变形的持续时间与气压波动的历时较一致;②在周期为103 h时,-18.2 hPa的气压变幅便可在地下62 m深处产生高达-112.1×10^-9的体应变,该频点的气压影响系数为6.2×10^-9/hPa;③在空间上,台风中心在980 km以外便能影响体应变观测,且随着台风的不断逼近或远离,其影响程度也相应地逐渐增强或减弱。
