Adsorption characterizations of fulvic acid fractions onto kaolinite

Fulvic acids extracted from a typical rice-production region near Taihu Lake of China were fractionated into three fractions including F4.8, F7.0 and F11.0 （eluted by pH 4.8 buffer, pH 7.0 buffer and pH 11.0 buffer, respectively）. Sorption of fulvic acid （FA） fractions onto kaolinite was studied by batch adsorption experiments, and characterizations of kaolinite before and after adsorption were investigated using scanning electron microscopy （SEM）. Adsorption isotherms of kaolinite for three FA fractions fit well with the Langrnuir adsorption model. The adsorption density of the three fractions was positively correlated with the ratio of the amount of the alkyl carbon to that of carboxyl and carbonyl carbon in FA fractions and followed an order of F11.0 〉 F7.0 〉 F4.8. Hydrophobic interaction was one of the control mechanisms for the sorption of FA fraction onto kaolinite. SEM images confirmed that compared to blank kaolinite samples, kaolinite samples coated by a FA fraction displayed an opener and more dispersed conformation resulting from the disruption of the floc structure in complex. Dispersion of kaolinite after adsorption was due to the repulsion between negatively charged FA-coated particles, which is closely related to the amount of FA fractions absorbed on kaolinite.

Biochar exposed in the environment may experience a series of surface changes, which is called biochar aging. In order to study the effects of biochar aging on Cu（Ⅱ） adsorption, we analyzed the surface properties before and after biochar aging with scanning electron microscopy（SEM） coupled to an energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometer（EDX） and diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy（DRIFTS）, and then explored the influence of the aging process on Cu（Ⅱ） adsorption by batch experiments. After the aging process, the oxygen concentration, phenolic hydroxyl groups, aromatic ethers and other oxygen-containing functional groups on the biochar surface increased, while carboxyl groups slightly decreased. Thus, over a range of pH, the cation exchange capacity（CEC） and adsorption capacity of Cu（Ⅱ） on the aged biochar were smaller than those of new biochar,indicating that when biochar is incubated at constant temperature and water holding capacity in the dark, the aging process may inhibit Cu（Ⅱ） adsorption. Meanwhile, the dissociation characteristics of oxygen-containing functional groups changed through the aging process, which may be the mechanism by which the biochar aging process inhibits the Cu（Ⅱ） adsorption. Carboxyl groups became more easily dissociated at low pH（3.3–5.0）,and the variation of maximum adsorption capability（qm） of Cu（Ⅱ） on the old biochar was enlarged. Phenolic hydroxyl groups increased after the aging, making them and carboxyl groups more difficult to dissociate at high pH（5.0–6.8）, and the variation of qmof Cu（Ⅱ） on the aged biochar was reduced.

A number of ancient charred paddies with a 14C dating of about 5900 a BP were recovered in the sixth excavation at Chuodun Site and are assigned to the Majiabang culture(7-6 ka BP).To understand their formation mechanism,the ancient charred paddies were compared to modern paddies using FT-IR spectrum and thermaogravimetric *** the same time,modern charred paddies were made in helium by the laboratory method,and the structural characteristics of them and the ancient ones were revealed using CP/*** results show there are more aromatic moieties in ancient charred paddies compared to modern *** aliphatic components of modern charred paddies decrease continuously,accompanied by the accumulation of aromatic components,when the duration and temperature of oxidation increase,and the structure buildings of modern charred paddies are more similar to ancient *** the planting manner of paddies during Majiabang culture period,these ancient charred paddies might be a result of the original farming mode involving fire.

The study of the critical zones(CZs) of the Earth link the composition and function of aboveground vegetation with the characteristics of the rock layers, providing a new way to study how the unique rock and soil conditions in karst regions affect the aboveground vegetation. Based on survey results of the rocks, soils and vegetation in the dolomite and limestone distribution areas in the karst area of central Guizhou, it was found that woody plant cover increases linearly with the number of cracks with a width of more than 1 mm, while the cover of herbaceous plants shows the opposite trend(p<0.01). The dolomite distribution area is characterized by undeveloped crevices, and the thickness of the soil layer is generally less than 20 cm, which is suitable for the distribution of herbaceous plants with shallow roots. Due to the development of crevices in the limestone distribution area, the soil is deeply distributed through the crevices for the deep roots of trees, which leads to a diversified species composition and a complicated structure in the aboveground vegetation. Based on moderate resolution imaging spectroradiometer(MODIS) remote sensing data from 2001 to 2010, the normalized differentiated vegetation index(NDVI) and annual net primary productivity(NPP) results for each phase of a 16-day interval further indicate that the NDVI of the limestone distribution area is significantly higher than that in the dolomite distribution area, but the average annual NPP is the opposite. The results of this paper indicate that in karst CZs, the lithology determines the structure and distribution of the soil, which further determines the cover of woody and herbaceous plants in the aboveground vegetation. Although the amount of soil in the limestone area may be less than that in the dolomite area, the developed crevice structure is more suitable for the growth of trees with deep roots, and the vegetation activity is strong. Debris flows pose serious risks to communities in mountainous areas,often resulting in large losses of human life and *** impeding presence of urban buildings often affects the runout behavior and deposition of debris *** the impact of different building densities and sizes on debris flow dynamics has yet to be quantified to guide urban planning in debris flow risk *** study focused on a debris flow that occurred in Zhouqu County,Gansu Province,China on August 7th,2010,which was catastrophic and destroyed many *** FLO-2D software was used to simulate this debris flow in two scenarios,*** presence and the absence of buildings,to obtain debris-flow intensity *** developed model was then used to further analyze the influence of large buildings and narrow channels within the urban *** simulation results show that considering the presence of buildings in the simulation is essential for accurate assessment of debris flow intensity and deposition *** layout of buildings in the upstream urban area,such as large buildings or parallel buildings which form narrow channels,can affect the flow velocity and depth of debris flow heading towards downstream *** mitigate damage to downstream buildings,the relative spacing(d/a)between upstream and downstream buildings should not exceed a value of two and should ideally be even *** findings provide valuable insights for improving the resistance of mountainous cities to urban debris flows.

The scarcity of wettability,insufficient active sites,and low surface area of graphite felt(GF)have long been suppressing the performance of vanadium redox flow batteries(VRFBs).Herein,an ultra-homogeneous multipledimensioned defect,including nano-scale etching and atomic-scale N,O codoping,was used to modify GF by the molten salt ***_(4)Cl and KClO_(3) were added simultaneously to the system to obtain porous N/O co-doped electrode(GF/ON),where KClO_(3) was used to ultra-homogeneously etch,and O-functionalize electrode,and NH4Cl was used as N dopant,***/ON presents better electrochemical catalysis for VO_(2)+/VO_(2)+ and V3+/V2+ reactions than only O-functionalized electrodes(GF/O)and *** enhanced electrochemical properties are attributed to an increase in active sites,surface area,and wettability,as well as the synergistic effect of N and O,which is also supported by the density functional theory ***,the cell using GF/ON shows higher discharge capacity,energy efficiency,and stability for cycling performance than the pristine cell at 140 mA cm^(−2) for 200 ***,the energy efficiency of the modified cell is increased by 9.7% from 55.2% for the pristine cell at 260 mA cm^(−2).Such an ultra-homogeneous etching with N and O co-doping through“boiling”molten salt medium provides an effective and practical application potential way to prepare superior electrodes for VRFB.

By systematic theoretical calculations,we reveal an excitonic insulator(EI)in the Ta_(2)Pd_(3)Te_(5)*** bulk Ta_(2)Pd_(3)Te_(5)is a van der Waals(vdW)layered compound,whereas the vdW layer can be obtained through exfoliation or molecular-beam ***-principles calculations show that the monolayer is a nearly zero-gap semiconductor with the modified Becke–Johnson *** to the same symmetry of the band-edge states,the two-dimensional polarization 2D would be finite as the band gap goes to zero,allowing for an EI state in the *** the first-principles many-body perturbation theory,the GW plus Bethe–Salpeter equation calculation reveals that the exciton binding energy is larger than the single-particle band gap,indicating the excitonic *** computed phonon spectrum suggests that the monolayer is dynamically stable without lattice *** findings suggest that the Ta_(2)Pd_(3)Te_(5) monolayer is an excitonic insulator without structural distortion.
