Dual-directional regulation of spinal cord injury and the gut microbiota

There is increasing evidence that the gut microbiota affects the incidence and progression of central nervous system diseases via the brain-gut axis.The spinal cord is a vital important part of the central nervous system;however,the underlying association between spinal cord injury and gut interactions remains unknown.Recent studies suggest that patients with spinal cord injury frequently experience intestinal dysfunction and gut dysbiosis.Alterations in the gut microbiota can cause disruption in the intestinal barrier and trigger neurogenic inflammatory responses which may impede recovery after spinal cord injury.This review summarizes existing clinical and basic research on the relationship between the gut microbiota and spinal cord injury.Our research identified three key points.First,the gut microbiota in patients with spinal cord injury presents a key characteristic and gut dysbiosis may profoundly influence multiple organs and systems in patients with spinal cord injury.Second,following spinal cord injury,weakened intestinal peristalsis,prolonged intestinal transport time,and immune dysfunction of the intestine caused by abnormal autonomic nerve function,as well as frequent antibiotic treatment,may induce gut dysbiosis.Third,the gut microbiota and associated metabolites may act on central neurons and affect recovery after spinal cord injury;cytokines and the Toll-like receptor ligand pathways have been identified as crucial mechanisms in the communication between the gut microbiota and central nervous system.Fecal microbiota transplantation,probiotics,dietary interventions,and other therapies have been shown to serve a neuroprotective role in spinal cord injury by modulating the gut microbiota.Therapies targeting the gut microbiota or associated metabolites are a promising approach to promote functional recovery and improve the complications of spinal cord injury.

A Probabilistic Approach for Predicting Vessel Motion

Dear Editor,This letter addresses the challenge of forecasting the motion of real-world vessels over an extended period with a limited amount of available data. By employing stochastic differential equation (SDE)modeling, we integrate both deterministic and stochastic components of the available information. Subsequently, we establish a recursive prediction methodology based on Bayes’ rule to update the model state when new measurements are received. Furthermore, we develop a stochastic model tailored specifically to vessel dynamics and introduce an approximation method to tackle computational complexities.

Thorium anomaly on the lunar surface and its indicative meaning

The Moon has been divided into three terranes:Procellarum KREEP Terrane(PKT),Feldspathic Highland Terrane(FHT),and South Pole-Aitken Terrane(SPAT),using globally measured Th and FeO.Many lunar evolu-tion models have predicted that a lunar magma ocean will produce a residual layer enriched in incompatible elements such as K,REE,and P(i.e.,KREEP)in the late age of crys-tallization;and that the distribution of thorium can be used as a proxy for determining the global distribution of KREEP.The thorium distribution in these three terranes is inhomo-geneous.The highest concentration of thorium is in PKT,the medium concentration of thorium is in SPAT,and almost none in FHT.Then what is the specific distribution in each of the terrane and what enlightenment can it tell us?Here we present and describe the detailed thorium distribution in PKT,SPAT,and FHT and provide some information for the origin of asymmetries on the lunar surface.

A Task Scheduling Algorithm Based on Clustering Pre-processing in Space-Based Information Network

With the diversification of space-based information network task requirements and the dramatic increase in demand, the efficient scheduling of various tasks in space-based information network becomes a new challenge. To address the problems of a limited number of resources and resource heterogeneity in the space-based information network, we propose a bilateral pre-processing model for tasks and resources in the scheduling pre-processing stage. We use an improved fuzzy clustering method to cluster tasks and resources and design coding rules and matching methods to match similar categories to improve the clustering effect. We propose a space-based information network task scheduling strategy based on an ant colony simulated annealing algorithm for the problems of high latency of space-based information network communication and high resource dynamics. The strategy can efficiently complete the task and resource matching and improve the task scheduling performance. The experimental results show that our proposed task scheduling strategy has less task execution time and higher resource utilization than other algorithms under the same experimental conditions. It has significantly improved scheduling performance.

Coupling and coordinated evolution characteristics of regional economy-energy-carbon emission multiple systems:A case study of main China's Basin

Comprehensive analysis of the Economy-Energy-Carbon Emission(EECE)system is beneficial for promoting sustainable social development.This study analyzes the system development of major watersheds in China from 2010 to 2019.The research fully considers the system’s internal and external inputs and outputs and proposes an evaluation index system for regional EECE coupling and coordinated development.Then,using the difference in system weight allocation to improve the coupling and coordination model,the study explores the dynamic system’s coupling and coordination.The results show that(1)The development of the system structure is relatively stable,but the overall development status is not ideal;(2)The downstream of China’s main river basins has obvious economic advantages,while the energy system fluctuates greatly.The efficiency of the carbon emission system will decrease in areas with rapid economic development.The coupling and coordination level of the EECE system is better in the Yangtze River Basin than in the Yellow River Basin;(3)From the perspective of dynamic coordinated development,the main river basins have been divided into two states since 2012,but it is relatively stable overall.Regional dynamic coordination is often at a disadvantage in regions with rapid economic and energy development;(4)The coupling coordination degree of the two river basins has significant positive spatial autocorrelation.Most provinces’significant spatial clustering characteristics of the coupling coordination degree are High-High type.Low-Low type provinces are mainly concentrated downstream.The research process has certain reference significance for the collaborative governance of complex regional systems.

Design and Implementation of a Time Synchronization Method for UOWC Networks

Underwater optical wireless communication (UOWC) technology facilitates high-speed data transmission among multiple nodes in underwater networks. Nevertheless, the absence of a common clock poses a challenge to achieving systematic and reliable access for multiple nodes within these networks. This paper presents a time synchronization method for UOWC networks to ensure the successful execution of the media access control (MAC) protocol. In this method, the node obtains timestamps by exchanging messages with the optical access point (OAP). Subsequently, the node calculates the clock drift relative to the OAP and the propagation time,ensuring that transmitted data packets can arrive approximately at the time specified by the OAP. To validate the effect of the proposed method, an experimental UOWC prototype, including the OAP and nodes, is implemented using field programmable gate array (FPGA). The experimental results demonstrate that the maximum difference between the actual arrival times of two data packets that are expected to reach the OAP simultaneously according to the MAC protocol meets the requirements of the quasi-synchronous code division multiple access (QS-CDMA) system, thereby substantiating the effectiveness of this synchronization method.

Zinc glycine chelate ameliorates DSS‑induced intestinal barrier dysfunction via attenuating TLR4/NF‑κB pathway in meat ducks

Background Zinc glycine chelate(Zn-Gly)has anti-inflammation and growth-promoting properties;however,the mechanism of Zn-Gly contribution to gut barrier function in Cherry Valley ducks during intestinal inflammation is unknown.Three-hundred 1-day-old ducks were divided into 5 groups(6 replicates and 10 ducks per replicate)in a completely randomized design:the control and dextran sulfate sodium(DSS)groups were fed a corn-soybean meal basal diet,and experimental groups received supplements of 70,120 or 170 mg/kg Zn in form of Zn-Gly.The DSS and treatment groups were given 2 mL of 0.45 g/mL DSS daily during d 15–21,and the control group received normal saline.The experiment lasted 21 d.Results Compared with DSS group,70,120 and 170 mg/kg Zn significantly increased body weight(BW),villus height and the ratio of villus to crypt,and significantly decreased the crypt depth of jejunum at 21 d.The number of goblet cells in jejunal villi in the Zn-Gly group was significantly increased by periodic acid-Schiff staining.Compared with control,the content of intestinal permeability marker D-lactic acid(D-LA)and fluxes of fluorescein isothiocyanate(FITC-D)in plasma of DSS group significantly increased,and 170 mg/kg Zn supplementation significantly decreased the D-LA content and FITC-D fluxes.Compared with control,contents of plasma,jejunum endotoxin and jejunum pro-inflammatory factors IL-1β,IL-6 and TNF-αwere significantly increased in DSS group,and were significantly decreased by 170 mg/kg Zn supplementation.Dietary Zn significantly increased the contents of anti-inflammatory factors IL-10,IL-22 and sIgA and IgG in jejunum.Real-time PCR and Western blot results showed that 170 mg/kg Zn supplementation significantly increased mRNA expression levels of CLDN-1 and expression of OCLN protein in jejunum,and decreased gene and protein expression of CLDN-2 compared with DSS group.The 120 mg/kg Zn significantly promoted the expressions of IL-22 and IgA.Dietary Zn-Gly supplementation significantly decreased pro-inflammatory genes IL-8

Attention-Enhanced Voice Portrait Model Using Generative Adversarial Network

Voice portrait technology has explored and established the relationship between speakers’ voices and their facialfeatures, aiming to generate corresponding facial characteristics by providing the voice of an unknown speaker.Due to its powerful advantages in image generation, Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) have now beenwidely applied across various fields. The existing Voice2Face methods for voice portraits are primarily based onGANs trained on voice-face paired datasets. However, voice portrait models solely constructed on GANs facelimitations in image generation quality and struggle to maintain facial similarity. Additionally, the training processis relatively unstable, thereby affecting the overall generative performance of the model. To overcome the abovechallenges,wepropose a novel deepGenerativeAdversarialNetworkmodel for audio-visual synthesis, namedAVPGAN(Attention-enhanced Voice Portrait Model using Generative Adversarial Network). This model is based ona convolutional attention mechanism and is capable of generating corresponding facial images from the voice ofan unknown speaker. Firstly, to address the issue of training instability, we integrate convolutional neural networkswith deep GANs. In the network architecture, we apply spectral normalization to constrain the variation of thediscriminator, preventing issues such as mode collapse. Secondly, to enhance the model’s ability to extract relevantfeatures between the two modalities, we propose a voice portrait model based on convolutional attention. Thismodel learns the mapping relationship between voice and facial features in a common space from both channeland spatial dimensions independently. Thirdly, to enhance the quality of generated faces, we have incorporated adegradation removal module and utilized pretrained facial GANs as facial priors to repair and enhance the clarityof the generated facial images. Unveiling the adaptation strategies of woody plants in remnant forest patches to spatiotemporal urban expansion through leaf trait networks

Background:With the expansion of urban areas,the remnants of forested areas play a crucial role in preserving biodiversity in urban environments.This study aimed to explore the impact of spatiotemporal urban expansion on the networks of leaf traits in woody plants within remnant forest patches,thereby enhancing our understanding of plant adaptive strategies and contributing to the conservation of urban biodiversity.Methods:Our study examined woody plants within 120 sample plots across 15 remnant forest patches in Guiyang,China.We constructed leaf trait networks (LTNs) based on 26 anatomical,structural,and compositional leaf traits and assessed the effects of the spatiotemporal dynamics of urban expansion on these LTNs.Results and conclusions:Our results indicate that shrubs within these patches have greater average path lengths and diameters than trees.With increasing urban expansion intensity,we observed a rise in the edge density of the LTN-shrubs.Additionally,modularity within the networks of shrubs decreased as road density and urban expansion intensity increased,and increases in the average path length and average clustering coefficient for shrubs were observed with a rise in the composite terrain complexity index.Notably,patches subjected to‘leapfrog’expansion exhibited greater average patch length and diameter than those experiencing edge growth.Stomatal traits were found to have high degree centrality within these networks,signifying their substantial contribution to multiple functions.In urban remnant forests,shrubs bolster their resilience to variable environmental pressures by augmenting the complexity of their leaf trait networks.
