A Comparative Study of Machine Learning Models for Traffic Accident Severity Prediction on Rural Highways

The use of machine learning models for analyzing Traffic Accident Severity (TAS) is increasingly common in safety assessment and traffic accident prevention. However， many existing studies have not fully considered the importance of feature engineering， model hyperparameter optimization， and training set proportions， all of which significantly affect the performance of these models. This study addresses the research gap by developing a TAS model using the light Gradient Boosting Machine (lightGBM) and integrating two feature engineering methods (Random Forest (RF) and Principal Component Analysis (PCA)). Additionally， we compared the lightGBM with three other machine learning models: Support Vector Machine (SVM)， Binary Logistic Regression (BL)， and Deep Neural Network (DNN). This comparison evaluates the effectiveness of different machine learning approaches in classifying TAS， taking into account variations in feature engineering techniques and training set proportions. The case study examines rural highway accidents in Yunnan Province， China， focusing on three categories of factors influencing TAS: accident characteristics， traffic flow， and highway conditions. Moreover， the SHAP (SHapley Additive exPlanations) values were employed to identify the primary factors contributing to the accident severity. The results show that with the training set size of 80%， all four models achieve the highest predictive accuracy for severe accidents. Notably， the PCA+lightGBM combination model outperforms others in overall accident prediction accuracy and has the highest recall rate and F1 score for severe accidents. Comparing the four models under different feature inputs， the impact of feature selection on model performance is less significant than reducing the data heterogeneity. lightGBM and DNN are more susceptible to data heterogeneity， and improving data homogeneity markedly boosts the model’s performance. Pangolins(Pholidota,Manidae)are classified as an evolutionarily distinct and globally endangered mammal due to their unique morphology(nail-like scales and a myrmecophagous diet)and being the victim of heavy poaching and worldwide trafficking.As such,pangolins serve as a textbook example for studying the special phenotypic evolutionary adaptations and conservation genetics of an endangered species.Recent years have demonstrated significant advancements in the fields of molecular genetics and genomics,which have translated to a series of important research achievements and breakthroughs concerning the evolution and conservation genetics of pangolins.This review comprehensively presents the hitherto advances in phylogeny,adaptive evolution,conservation genetics,and conservation genomics that are related to pangolins,which will provide an ample understanding of their diversity,molecular adaptation mechanisms,and evolutionary potentials.In addition,we highlight the priority of investigating species/population diversity among pangolins and suggest several avenues of research that are highly relevant for future pangolin conservation.

Feasibility of condensate water recycle of split air handling unit in Chinese University buildings

Recycling the condensate water of the air conditioner could be explored as an alternative water source to con-tribute to building the green campus.This paper explored the condensate water production through actual mea-surement based on a split air handling unit(SAHU)in a university building.Then,the statistical analysis was used to analyze the recycling feasibility and the impact factors of the condensate water production in 31 Chinese provincial capital cities to obtain the recycling potential map of the condensate water generated from a SAHU.Results showed that:(1)In the measurement,the amount of condensate water produced by a single split air conditioner was 1.6 kg from 12:40 to 13:40.Therefore,the daily output of condensate water of the air condi-tioner with the university operation schedule could reach 52.99 kg during the main air-conditioning season.(2)Among the 31 provincial capital cities in China,the largest condensate water outputs could be found in the Hot Summer and Warm Winter zone and the Hot Summer and Cold Winter zone,with an average monthly output of 1600 kg and 1100 kg,respectively.(3)Regression analysis showed that the dry-bulb temperature and dew point temperature of outdoor air had the highest positive and significant influence on condensate water production.The objective of this study is to provide theoretical guidance for the design and energy conservation evaluation of the feasibility of SAHU condensate water recycling in universities.

Atomic and close-to-atomic scale manufacturing(ACSM)aims to provide techniques for manufacturing in various fields,such as circuit manufacturing,high energy physics equipment,and medical devices and materials.The realization of atomic scale material manipulation depending on the theoretical system of classical mechanics faces great challenges.Understanding and using intermolecular and surface forces are the basis for better designing of ACSM.Transformation of atoms based on scanning tunneling microscopy or atomic force microscopy(AFM)is an essential process to regulate intermolecular interactions.Self-assemble process is a thermodynamic process involving complex intermolecular forces.The competition of these interaction determines structure assembly and packing geometry.For typical nanomachining processes including AFM nanomachining and chemical mechanical polishing,the coupling of chemistry and stress(tribochemistry)assists in the removal of surface atoms.Furthermore,based on the principle of triboelectrochemistry,we expect a further reduction of the potential barrier,and a potential application in high-efficiency atoms removal and fabricating functional coating.Future fundamental research is proposed for achieving high-efficiency and high-accuracy manufacturing with the aiding of external field.This review highlights the significant contribution of intermolecular and surface forces to ACSM,and may accelerate its progress in the in-depth investigation of fundamentals.

Introduction:Observational studies have revealed an association between waist circumference(WC)and atrial fibrillation(AF).However,it is difficult to infer a causal relationship from observational studies because the observed associations could be confounded by unknown risk factors.Therefore,the causal role of WC in AF is unclear.This study was designed to investigate the causal association between WC and AF using a two-sample Mendelian randomization(MR)analysis.Methods:In our two-sample MR analysis,the genetic variation used as an instrumental variable for MR was acquired from a genome-wide association study(GWAS)of WC(42 single nucleotide polymorphisms with a genetic significance of Pliable.Results:All three MR analyses provided evidence of a positive causal association between high WC and AF.High WC was suggested to increase the risk of AF based on the IVW method(odds ratio[OR]=1.43,95%confidence interval[CI],1.30-1.58,P=2.51×10^(-13)).The results of MR-Egger and weighted median regression exhibited similar trends(MR-Egger OR=1.40[95%CI,1.08-1.81],P=1.61×10^(-2);weighted median OR=1.39[95%CI,1.21-1.61],P=1.62×10^(-6)).MR-Egger intercepts and funnel plots showed no directional pleiotropic effects between high WC and AF.Conclusions:Our findings suggest that greater WC is associated with an increased risk of AF.Taking measures to reduce WC may help prevent the occurrence of AF.

Chronic atrophic gastritis(CAG),a common disease of digestive system,is an extremely important cause of gastric cancer(GC).The occurrence and development of CAG involves the abnormality of multiple signaling pathways.Traditional Chinese medicines(TCMs)has the advantages of mild action,multi-target and small adverse reaction,etc.,which broadens the way for the treatment of the disease,and TCMs can play a therapeutic role by regulating multiple signaling pathways.In this review,based on the related experiments of TCMs and Chinese herbal compounds in recent years,the related literatures were searched and 10 kinds of signaling pathways involved were summarized,in order to provide a reference for further research on reversing or delaying the progress of CAG and preventing gastric cancer.

Poor tumor accumulation remains a serious challenge for nanomedicines to achieve ideal antitumor outcomes.The different size preferences for systematic circulation,tumor retention and deep permeation have attracted great attention when designing antineoplastic nano-delivery system.Herein,we developed a nano-system which can shrink its size in tumor microenvironment to achieve better tumor retention and penetration.In this work,the cationic bovine serum albumin-protected,doxorubicin-loaded gold nanoclusters(CAuNC-DOX)and amino-functionalized mesoporous silica nanoparticles(MSN)are connected by Fe^(2+)and are further coated with hyaluronic acid(HA)to obtain a core-satellite MSN-Fe-CAuNCDOX@HA nano system(MFADH).When reaching the tumor site,the HA shell,which endows the system with both good biocompatibility and preferable tumor targeting ability,was disintegrated,followed by acid-stimulated release of small-sized pharmacological unit—CAuNC-DOX for further tumor penetration.As demonstrated in both in vitro and in vivo results,MFADH showed excellent antitumor effect,providing a proof of concept for the feasibility of shrinkable nanoplatforms in tumor treatment.

The genus Rosa(Rosaceae family)includes about 200 species spread in the world,and this genus shows unique advantages in medicine and food.To date,several scholars concentrated on compounds belonging to flavonoids,triterpenes,tannins,polysaccharide,phenolic acids,fatty acids,organic acids,carotenoids,and vitamins.Pharmacological effects such as antineoplastic and anti-cancer properties,antiinflammatory,antioxidant,liver protection,regulate blood sugar,antimicrobial activity,antiviral activity,as well as nervous system protection and cardiovascular protection were wildly reported.This article reviews the chemical constituents,pharmacological effects,applications and safety evaluations of Rosa plants,which provides a reference for the comprehensive utilization of medicine and food resources and gives a scientific basis for the development of medicinal plants of the genus Rosa.

MoS_(2) reinforced PEEK composite for improved aqueous boundary lubrication

Polyether-etherketone(PEEK)is a corrosion-resistant material that has been widely used in aqueous lubrication.However,its anti-wear performance must be improved for its application in the industry.In this study,to improve the anti-wear performance of PEEK for aqueous boundary lubrication,PEEK/MoS_(2)composites were prepared by ball-milling and spark plasma sintering processes.A competitive MoS_(2)mechanism between the low shear strength property and the role of promoting wear debris generation influences the anti-wear performance of PEEK/MoS_(2)composites.Experiments demonstrated that the coefficients of friction(COF)and wear rate of PEEK composite with 0.25 wt%MoS_(2)were significantly reduced 68%and 94%,respectively.Furthermore,this was the first time that a PEEK composite could achieve a COF of less than 0.05 in aqueous boundary lubrication.Its anti-wear performance was verified to be better than that of PEEK/carbon fiber(CF)and Thordon composites.The PEEK/MoS_(2)composite may be a potential material for underwater equipment because of its outstanding anti-wear performance in aqueous boundary lubrication.
