Biological sources, paleoenvironment, and organic matter enrichment in source rocks of the Ordovician Majiagou Formation, Ordos Basin, China:Evidence from biomarkers,microfossils, and inorganic geochemical analyses

Carbonate deposits in the Ordovivian Majiagou Formation are significant source rocks for natural gas generation in the Ordos Basin, northwestern China. Previous studies mainly focused on the organic matter enrichment mechanism of shales rather than carbonate rocks. The biological sources and paleoenvironment of carbonate source rocks, and the main controlling factors of organic matter enrichment in the carbonate source rocks were studied in this paper in combination with evidence from biomarkers, microfossils and inorganic geochemistry analysis. The results show that four types of microfacies were identified in the Majiagou Formation, respectively as: mud flat microfacies, mud-dolomite flat microfacies, dolomite flat microfacies, and open marine microfacies. The biological sources of organic matter are chiefly planktonic algae, followed by bacteria. The mud flat and mud-dolomite flat contain a high abundance of terrigenous detrital inputs, as indicated by the high content of Al_(2)O_(3), TiO_(2), Th, and Zr. The low Sr/Cu and high Rb/Sr values reveal warm and humid paleoclimate conditions in the mud flat and mud-dolomite flat, whereas the dolomite flat and open marine were likely formed in hot and arid paleoclimate conditions. The mud flat and mud-dolomite flat deposits were characterized by high paleoproductivity of the Majiagou Formation. Low Sr/Ba values were found in the mud flat samples, indicating fresh to brackish water condition, whereas samples of other facies have a relatively high degree of salinity. Based on U_(auth), Mo_(auth), Cr_(auth), Co_(auth), δCe, and δEu values, the mud flat microfacies was formed in a suboxic and anoxic environment, whereas the mud-dolomite flat, dolomite flat and open marine microfacies were within dysoxic to oxic conditions. A model of organic matter enrichment in the Majiagou Formation is thus established. Leaf hydraulics coordinated with leaf economics and leaf size in mangrove species along a salinity gradient

Independence among leaf economics,leaf hydraulics and leaf size confers plants great capability in adapting to heterogeneous environments.However,it remains unclear whether the independence of the leaf traits revealed across species still holds within species,especially under stressed conditions.Here,a suite of traits in these dimensions were measured in leaves and roots of a typical mangrove species,Ceriops tagal,which grows in habitats with a similar sunny and hot environment but different soil salinity in southern China.Compared with C.tagal under low soil salinity,C.tagal under high soil salinity had lower photosynthetic capacity,as indicated directly by a lower leaf nitrogen concentration and higher water use efficiency,and indirectly by a higher investment in defense function and thinner palisade tissue;had lower water transport capacity,as evidenced by thinner leaf minor veins and thinner root vessels;and also had much smaller single leaf area.Leaf economics,hydraulics and leaf size of the mangrove species appear to be coordinated as one trait dimension,which likely stemmed from covariation of soil water and nutrient availability along the salinity gradient.The intraspecific leaf trait relationship under a stressful environment is insightful for our understanding of plant adaption to the multifarious environments.

The worldwide allometric relationship in anatomical structures for plant roots

The cortex(i.e.,absorptive tissue)and stele(transportive vascular tissue)are fundamental to the function of plant roots.Unraveling how these anatomical structures are assembled in absorptive roots is essential for our understanding of plant ecology,physiology,and plant responses to global environmental changes.In this review,we first compile a large data set on anatomical traits in absorptive roots,including cortex thickness and stele radius,across 698 observations and 512 species.Using this data set,we reveal a common root allometry in absorptive root structures,i.e.,cortex thickness increases much faster than stele radius with increasing root diameter(hereafter,root allometry).Root allometry is further validated within and across plant growth forms(woody,grass,and liana species),mycorrhiza types(arbuscular mycorrhiza,ectomycorrhiza,and orchid mycorrhizas),phylogenetic gradients(from ferns to Orchidaceae),and environmental change scenarios(e.g.,elevation of atmospheric CO_(2)concentration and nitrogen fertilization).These findings indicate that root allometry is common in plants.Importantly,root allometry varies greatly across species.We then summarize recent research on the mechanisms of root allometry and potential issues regarding these mechanisms.We further discuss ecological and evolutionary implications of root allometry.Finally,we propose several important research directions that should be pursued regarding root allometry.

One inorganic–organic hybrid derived from reduced molybdophosphate and trinuclear cadmium(II) fragment

One new polyoxometalate （POM）-based inorganic-organic hybrid [Cdn3~HPO4）（Hbpp）（H20）2]{CdII[P4_ Mo6028H3.s（OH）312}.（H4tpb）.7H20 （1）（bpp = 1,3-bis-（4-pyridyl）propane, tpb = 1,2,4,5-tetra（4-pyridyl）- benzene） constructed from reduced molybdophosphate [P4Mo6028H3.5（OH）3]s＇5- （P4Mo6）, trinuclear Cdn-phosphate-Hbpp fragment and protonated tpb has been hydrothermally synthesized and structurally characterized by IR, elemental analyses and single crystal X-ray diffraction. The complex 1 crystallizes in the monoclinic system with the space group P21]c and cell parameters of a=15.672（12）A, b=23.839（19）A, c=27.654（2）,~, fl=115.850（10）~, V=9297.9（12） ~3, Z=4, R1 ~0.0534 and wR2 ~0.1135. In complex 1, the P4Mo6 units are bridged by CdII ions to form the classic sandwich-type [Cd（P4Mo6）2] dimers, which are further connected into a two dimensional network via the trinuclear Cdn subunits. The tpb is synthesized in situ from the bpp ligands and connects the adjacent 2D layers into a 3D supramolecular framework through hydrogen bonding interactions. The electrochemical and fluorescent properties of complex 1 have been investigated.

Effect of Chaishao Chengqi Decoction on inflammation and prognosis of moderate and severe acute pancreatitis of heat stagnation and Fu-organ excess type

Objective:To explore the curative effect of Chaishao Chengqi Decoction on moderate to severe acute pancreatitis of heat stagnation and Fu-organ excess type and its effect on inflammatory reaction,and to provide new ideas for clinical treatment and prognosis evaluation.Methods:60 patients with moderate to severe acute pancreatitis of heat stagnation and Fu-organ excess type from June 2017 to June 2019 were randomly divided into control group treated with conventional therapy and treatment group treated with Chaishao Chengqi Decoction for 2 weeks.The differences of clinical efficacy and TCM syndromes between the two groups were compared.Ranson score,Balthazar CTSI score,SIRS score and modified Marshall score were recorded before and after treatment.The levels of inflammatory factors and oxidative stress-related molecules were compared before and after treatment.Result:After treatment,the total effective rates of the control group and the treatment group were 80.0%and 93.3%,respectively,with statistical difference(χ2=8.845,P=0.027);after treatment,the total effective rates of TCM syndromes evaluation of the control group and the treatment group were 76.7%and 93.3%,respectively,with statistical difference(χ2=10.024,P=0.012);after treatment,the Ranson score,Balthazar CTSI score,SIRS score and improved Marshall score were all significantly decreased(P<0.05),and the decrease was more significant in the treatment group(P<0.05);after treatment,the serum levels of TNF-α,IL-6 and MDA were significantly decreased in both groups,and superoxide dismutase(SOD)was significantly increased(P<0.05),and the treatment group improved more(P<0.05).Conclusion:Chaishao Chengqi Decoction has a good curative effect on moderate to severe acute pancreatitis of heat stagnation and Fu-organ excess type,and can effectively improve inflammatory response and oxidative stress,which has a high clinical significance.

The link between dietary nutrients intake and cardiovascular diseases in cold regions

Background:The cold winter weather in northern China influences the dietary habits of its residents,contributing to a heightened risk of cardiovascular disorders,such as hypertension and coronary heart disease.Key factors include low vegetable consumption and high salt and fat intakes.This study aims to investigate the relationships between northern dietary nutrient intake in northern China and cardiovascular disorders during the winter season.Methods:A food frequency questionnaire tailored to the actual eating habits in northern China was designed.Retrospective data from 955 Chinese adults were collected from November to March between 2014 to 2023.Logistic regression was employed to analyze the relationship between dietary nutrients and cardiovascular diseases,with model performance assessed using receiver operating characteristic(ROC)curves.Results:Adjusted for gender,age,and body mass index(BMI),an inverse association was observed between vitamin A(OR=0.706,95%CI:0.550,0.907),nicotinic acid(OR=0.584,95%CI:0.447,0.762),phosphorus(OR=0.777,95%CI:0.608,0.994),selenium(OR=0.719,95%CI:0.560,0.923),zinc(OR=0.683,95%CI:0.531,0.880),methionine(OR=0.730,95%CI:0.569,0.936),arginine(OR=0.753,95%CI:0.588,0.964),lysine(OR=0.706,95%CI:0.550,0.907),aspartic acid(OR=0.730,95%CI:0.569,0.936)and hypertension.Additionally,a negative association was found between niacin(OR=0.752,95%CI:0.597,0.946)and coronary heart disease.Conversely,a positive association was identified between iodine and hypertension(OR=1.305,95%CI:1.020,1.669)and coronary heart disease(OR=1.301,95%CI:1.037,1.634).Conclusion:Our study suggests that maintaining a balanced dietary intake of vitamin A,niacin,phosphorus,selenium,zinc,methionine,arginine,lysine,and aspartic acid can be beneficial in preventing hypertension.Adequate niacin intake is associated with a lower risk of coronary heart disease.However,excessive iodine intake may contribute to hypertension and coronary heart disease.

A Robust Framework for Multimodal Sentiment Analysis with Noisy Labels Generated from Distributed Data Annotation

Multimodal sentiment analysis utilizes multimodal data such as text,facial expressions and voice to detect people’s attitudes.With the advent of distributed data collection and annotation,we can easily obtain and share such multimodal data.However,due to professional discrepancies among annotators and lax quality control,noisy labels might be introduced.Recent research suggests that deep neural networks(DNNs)will overfit noisy labels,leading to the poor performance of the DNNs.To address this challenging problem,we present a Multimodal Robust Meta Learning framework(MRML)for multimodal sentiment analysis to resist noisy labels and correlate distinct modalities simultaneously.Specifically,we propose a two-layer fusion net to deeply fuse different modalities and improve the quality of the multimodal data features for label correction and network training.Besides,a multiple meta-learner(label corrector)strategy is proposed to enhance the label correction approach and prevent models from overfitting to noisy labels.We conducted experiments on three popular multimodal datasets to verify the superiority of ourmethod by comparing it with four baselines.

Multi-Robot Collaborative Hunting in Cluttered Environments With Obstacle-Avoiding Voronoi Cells

This work proposes an online collaborative hunting strategy for multi-robot systems based on obstacle-avoiding Voronoi cells in a complex dynamic environment. This involves firstly designing the construction method using a support vector machine(SVM) based on the definition of buffered Voronoi cells(BVCs). Based on the safe collision-free region of the robots, the boundary weights between the robots and the obstacles are dynamically updated such that the robots are tangent to the buffered Voronoi safety areas without intersecting with the obstacles. Then, the robots are controlled to move within their own buffered Voronoi safety area to achieve collision-avoidance with other robots and obstacles. The next step involves proposing a hunting method that optimizes collaboration between the pursuers and evaders. Some hunting points are generated and distributed evenly around a circle. Next, the pursuers are assigned to match the optimal points based on the Hungarian algorithm.Then, a hunting controller is designed to improve the containment capability and minimize containment time based on collision risk. Finally, simulation results have demonstrated that the proposed cooperative hunting method is more competitive in terms of time and travel distance.

PURP: A Scalable System for Predicting Short-Term Urban TrafficFlow Based on License Plate Recognition Data

Accurate and efficient urban traffic flow prediction can help drivers identify road traffic conditions in real-time,consequently helping them avoid congestion and accidents to a certain extent.However,the existing methods for real-time urban traffic flow prediction focus on improving the model prediction accuracy or efficiency while ignoring the training efficiency,which results in a prediction system that lacks the scalability to integrate real-time traffic flow into the training procedure.To conduct accurate and real-time urban traffic flow prediction while considering the latest historical data and avoiding time-consuming online retraining,herein,we propose a scalable system for Predicting short-term URban traffic flow in real-time based on license Plate recognition data(PURP).First,to ensure prediction accuracy,PURP constructs the spatio-temporal contexts of traffic flow prediction from License Plate Recognition(LPR)data as effective characteristics.Subsequently,to utilize the recent data without retraining the model online,PURP uses the nonparametric method k-Nearest Neighbor(namely KNN)as the prediction framework because the KNN can efficiently identify the top-k most similar spatio-temporal contexts and make predictions based on these contexts without time-consuming model retraining online.The experimental results show that PURP retains strong prediction efficiency as the prediction period increases.

Sustainable production of high-energy-density jet fuel via cycloaddition reactions

Developing an energy supply-chain based on renewable biomass holds great potential to build a low carbon society. High-energy-density(HED) jet fuel, featuring unique fused/strained cycloalkanes, is of great significance for volume-limited military aircrafts, as their high density and combustion heat can extend flight duration and increase the payload. Therefore, the exploration of biomass-based routes towards HED fuel has drawn much attention over the past decade. Cycloaddition reaction features rapid construction of various carbocycles in an atom-and step-economical fashion. This elegant strategy has been widely applied in the manufacture of sustainable HED fuel. Here we carefully summarize the progress achieved in this fascinating area and the review is categorized by the cycloaddition patterns including [4+2], [2+2],[4+4], and [2+1] cycloadditions. Besides, the energy densities of the as-prepared biofuels and petroleumbased fuels(conventional Jet-A and advanced JP-10) are also compared. This review will provide important insights into rational design of new HED fuel with different ring-types/sizes and inspire the chemists to turn those literature studies into practical applications in military field.
