The urgent need to develop a new grassland map in China:based on the consistency and accuracy of ten land cover products

Grasslands are the most dominant terrestrial ecosystem in China, but few national grassland maps have been generated. The grassland resource map produced in the 1980s is widely used as background data, but it has not been updated for almost 40 years.Therefore, a reliable map depicting the current spatial distribution of grasslands across the country is urgently needed. In this study, we evaluated the grassland consistency and accuracy of ten land cover datasets(GLC2000, GlobCover, CCI-LC,MCD12Q1, CLUD, GlobeLand30, GLC-FCS30, CGLS-LC100, CLCD, and FROM-GLC) for 2000, 2010, and 2020 based on extensive fieldwork. We concluded that the area of these ten grassland products ranges from 107.80×10^(4)to 332.46×10^(4)km^(2), with CLCD and MCD12Q1 having the highest area consistency. The spatial and sample consistency is highest in the regions of eastcentral Inner Mongolia, the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and northern Xinjiang, while the distribution of southern grasslands is scattered and differs considerably among the ten products. MCD12Q1 is significantly more accurate than the other nine products,with an overall accuracy(OA) reaching 77.51% and a kappa coefficient of 0.51;CLCD is slightly less accurate than MCD12Q1(OA=73.02%, kappa coefficient=0.45) and is more conducive to the fine monitoring and management of grassland because of its30-meter resolution. The highest accuracy of grassland was found in the Inner Mongolia-Ningxia region and Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, while the accuracy was worst in the southeastern region. In the future grassland mapping, cartographers should improve the accuracy of the grassland distribution in South China and regions where grassland is confused with forest, cropland and bare land. We specify the availability of valuable data in existing land cover datasets for China’s grasslands and call for researchers and the government to actively produce a new generation of grassland maps.

BACKGROUND:Shared decision-making(SDM)has broad application in emergencies.Most published studies have focused on SDM for a certain disease or expert opinions on future research gaps without revealing the full picture or detailed guidance for clinical practice.This study is to investigate the optimal application of SDM to guide life-sustaining treatment(LST)in emergencies.METHODS:This study was a prospective two-round Delphi consensus-seeking survey among multiple stakeholders at the China Consortium of Elite Teaching Hospitals for Residency Education.Participants were identified based on their expertise in medicine,law,administration,medical education,or patient advocacy.All individual items and questions in the questionnaire were scored using a 5-point Likert scale,with responses ranging from"very unimportant"(a score of 1)to"extremely important"(a score of 5).The percentages of the responses that had scores of 4-5on the 5-point Likert scale were calculated.A Kendall’s W coefficient was calculated to evaluate the consensus of experts.RESULTS:A two-level framework consisting of 4 domains and 22 items as well as a ready-touse checklist for the informed consent process for LST was established.An acceptable Kendall’s W coefficient was achieved.CONCLUSION:A consensus-based framework supporting SDM during LST in an emergency department can inform the implementation of guidelines for clinical interventions,research studies,medical education,and policy initiatives.

Objective:To determine whether adjuvant chemotherapy improves the prognoses in women with stage IC1 epithelial ovarian cancer(EOC).Methods:All eligible women diagnosed with stage IC1 EOC from 2003 to 2019 in Tongji Hospital were included.Patient characteristics,tumor features,surgical types,and chemotherapeutic treatments were collected.Kaplan-Meier analysis and Cox regression analysis were performed to evaluate progression-free survival(PFS)and overall survival(OS).

Maintaining the stemness of the transplanted stem cell spheroids in an inflammatory microenvironment is challenging but important in regenerative medicine. Direct delivery of stem cells to repair periodontal defects may yield suboptimal effects due to the complexity of the periodontal inflammatory environment. Herein, stem cell spheroid is encapsulated by interfacial assembly of metal-phenolic network(MPN) nanofilm to form a stem cell microsphere capsule. Specifically, periodontal ligament stem cells(PDLSCs) spheroid was coated with FeⅢ/tannic acid coordination network to obtain spheroid@[FeⅢ-TA] microcapsules. The formed biodegradable MPN biointerface acted as a cytoprotective barrier and exhibited antioxidative, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory activities, effectively remodeling the inflammatory microenvironment and maintaining the stemness of PDLSCs. The stem cell microencapsulation proposed in this study can be applied to multiple stem cells with various functional metal ion/polyphenol coordination, providing a simple yet efficient delivery strategy for stem cell stemness maintenance in an inflammatory environment toward a better therapeutic outcome.

Mechanism of ball milled activated carbon in improving the desalination performance of flow-and fixed-electrode in capacitive deionization desalination

Capacitive deionization(CDI)is a novel electrochemical water-treatment technology.The electrode material is an important factor in determining the ion separation efficiency.Activated carbon(AC)is extensively used as an electrode material;however,there are still many deficiencies in commercial AC.We adopted a simple processing method,ball milling,to produce ball milled AC(BAC)to improve the physical and electrochemical properties of the original AC and desalination efficiency.The BAC was characterized in detail and used for membrane capacitive deionization(MCDI)and flow-electrode capacitive deionization(FCDI)electrode materials.After ball milling,the BAC obtained excellent pore structures and favorable surfaces for ion adsorption,which reduced electron transfer resistance and ion migration resistance in the electrodes.The optimal ball-milling time was 10 h.However,the improved effects of BAC as fixed electrodes and flow electrodes are different and the related mechanisms are discussed in detail.The average salt adsorption rates(ASAR)of FCDI and MCDI were improved by 134%and 17%,respectively,and the energy-normalized removal salt(ENRS)were enhanced by 21%and 53%,respectively.We believe that simple,low-cost,and environmentally friendly BAC has great potential for practical engineering applications of FCDI and MCDI.

Evaluation of airborne transmission risk in university towns based on IEQ surveys

This study aims to evaluate airborne transmission risk in university towns during the COVID-19 pandemic based on surveys of indoor environmental quality(IEQ).Both on-site measurements and questionnaire surveys were carried out in public buildings in university towns in Changsha,China.Air temperature,relative humidity,and CO 2 concentration in one library,ten classrooms,eight canteens,seven restaurants,and sixteen malls were mea-sured.2220 valid questionnaires concerning occupants’sensation on thermal environment,air movement,and indoor air quality were collected.A 3-level evaluation method of airborne transmission risk that is dependent on building type and indoor CO 2 concentration was developed.Excessive CO 2 concentration is found in library(1045 ppm),classrooms(1151 ppm),restaurants(1242 ppm),and malls(1057 ppm).The percentage time of“high risk”accounts for 18-100%in these buildings.The results reveal a serious problem:numerous public buildings in China and probably other resource limited countries are not basically prepared and equipped to cope with airborne transmission.This fact should be taken into account when developing guidelines and formu-lating mitigation measures.Real-time monitoring and displaying IEQ and thus the transmission risk level should be an important way to be widely implemented in public buildings.

Health risk assessment of trace metal(loid)s in agricultural soils based on Monte Carlo simulation coupled with positive matrix factorization model in Chongqing, southwest China

This study aimed to investigate the pollution characteristics, source apportionment, and health risks associated with trace metal(loid)s(TMs) in the major agricultural producing areas in Chongqing, China. We analyzed the source apportionment and assessed the health risk of TMs in agricultural soils by using positive matrix factorization(PMF) model and health risk assessment(HRA) model based on Monte Carlo simulation. Meanwhile, we combined PMF and HRA models to explore the health risks of TMs in agricultural soils by different pollution sources to determine the priority control factors. Results showed that the average contents of cadmium(Cd), arsenic (As), lead(Pb), chromium(Cr), copper(Cu), nickel(Ni), and zinc(Zn) in the soil were found to be 0.26, 5.93, 27.14, 61.32, 23.81, 32.45, and 78.65 mg/kg, respectively. Spatial analysis and source apportionment analysis revealed that urban and industrial sources, agricultural sources, and natural sources accounted for 33.0%, 27.7%, and 39.3% of TM accumulation in the soil, respectively. In the HRA model based on Monte Carlo simulation, noncarcinogenic risks were deemed negligible(hazard index genic risks were at acceptable level(10^(-6)genic risk ≤ 10^(-4)), with higher risks observed for children compared to adults. The relationship between TMs, their sources, and health risks indicated that urban and industrial sources were primarily associated with As, contributing to 75.1% of carcinogenic risks and 55.7% of non-carcinogenic risks, making them the primary control factors. Meanwhile, agricultural sources were primarily linked to Cd and Pb, contributing to 13.1% of carcinogenic risks and 21.8% of non-carcinogenic risks, designating them as secondary control factors.

高纯锌中铁、铜、镉、锑、铅、锡、砷元素含量低,基体和多原子离子干扰严重,这使得溶样后直接采用电感耦合等离子体质谱法(ICP-MS)对这7种元素进行测定的难度较大。实验表明:采用15mL硝酸(1+2)低温溶解0.100 0g样品,不进行基体分离,通过优化仪器参数、选择合适的同位素避免质谱干扰,采用标准加入法绘制校准曲线消除基体效应,可实现电感耦合等离子体质谱法(ICP-MS)对高纯锌中铁、铜、镉、锑、铅、锡和砷共7种痕量元素的测定。各元素校准曲线的相关系数在0.995 8到0.999 7之间,方法检出限为0.05~7.53μg/L。采用实验方法对高纯锌实际样品中铁、铜、镉、锑、铅、锡和砷进行分析,测得结果的相对标准偏差(RSD,n=11)为2.4%~5.3%,加标回收率为96%~109%。按照实验方法测定纯锌样品中7种痕量元素,砷测得结果与电感耦合等离子体原子发射光谱法(ICP-AES)基本一致,锡和锑与原子荧光光谱法(AFS)基本一致,铁、铜、镉和铅与采用锌基体分离—ICP-MS基本一致。

While early-onset Parkinson’s disease(EOPD)caused by mutations in the parkin gene(PRKN)tends to have a relatively benign course compared to genetically undetermined(GU)-EOPD,the exact underlying mechanisms remain elusive.We aimed to search for the differences between PRKN-EOPD and GU-EOPD by dopamine transporter(DAT)and glucose metabolism positron-emission-tomography(PET)imaging.Twelve patients with PRKN-EOPD and 16 with GU-EOPD who accepted both ^(11)C-2b-carbomethoxy-3b-(4-trimethylstannylphenyl)tropane(^(11)C-CFT)and ^(18)F-fluorodeoxyglucose PET were enrolled.The ^(11)C-CFT uptake was analyzed on both regional and voxel levels,whereas glucose metabolism was assessed in a voxel-wise fashion.Correlations between DAT and glucose metabolism imaging,DAT imaging and clinical severity,as well as glucose metabolism imaging and clinical severity were explored.Both clinical symptoms and DAT-binding pat-terns in the posterior putamen were highly symmetrical in patients with PRKN-EOPD,and dopaminergic dysfunction in the ipsilateral putamen was severer in patients with PRKN-EOPD than GU-EOPD.Meanwhile,the DAT binding was associ-ated with the severity of motor dysfunction in patients with GU-EOPD only.Patients with PRKN-EOPD showed increased glucose metabolism in the contralateral medial frontal gyrus(supplementary motor area(SMA)),contralateral substantia nigra,contralateral thalamus,and contralateral cerebellum.Notably,glucose metabolic activity in the contralateral medial frontal gyrus was inversely associated with regional DAT binding in the bilateral putamen.Patients with PRKN-EOPD showed enhanced metabolic connectivity within the bilateral putamen,ipsilateral paracentral and precentral lobules,and the ipsilateral SMA.Collectively,compared to GU-EOPD,PRKN-EOPD is characterized by symmetrical,more severe dopaminergic dysfunction and relative increased glucose metabolism.Meanwhile,SMA with elevated glucose metabolism and enhanced connectivity may act as compensatory mechanisms in PRKN-EOPD.
