Prevalence and risk factors of depression among patients with perianal fistulizing Crohn’s disease

BACKGROUND Psychological distress,especially depression,associated with perianal fistulizing Crohn’s disease(PFCD)is widespread and refractory.However,there is a surprising paucity of studies to date that have sought to identify the prevalence and risk factors of depression associated with PFCD.AIM To estimate the prevalence of depressive symptoms and investigate the depression-related risk factors in patients with PFCD.METHODS The study was conducted in the form of survey and clinical data collection via questionnaire and specialized medical staff.Depressive symptoms,life quality,and fatigue severity of patients with PFCD were assessed by Patient Health Questionnaire-9,Inflammatory Bowel Disease Patient Quality of life Questionnaire(IBDQ),and Inflammatory Bowel Disease(IBD)Fatigue Patient Self-assessment Scale.The basic demographic information,overall disease features,perianal clinical information,and laboratory inflammation indicators were also gathered.Multivariate regression analysis was ultimately used to ascertain the risk factors of depression associated with PFCD.RESULTS A total of 123 patients with PFCD were involved,and 56.91%were suffering from depression.According to multivariate logistic regression analysis,Perianal Disease Activity Index(PDAI)score[odds ratio(OR)=0.69,95%confidence interval(CI):0.50 to 0.95],IBDQ score(OR=0.93,95%CI:0.88 to 0.97),modified Van Assche index(OR=1.24,95%CI:1.01 to 1.53),and IBD Fatigue score(OR=1.72,95%CI:1.23 to 2.42)were independent risk factors of depression-related prevalence among patients with PFCD(Plinear regression analysis revealed that the increasing perianal modified Van Assche index(βvalue=0.166,95%CI:0.02 to 0.31)and decreasing IBDQ score(βvalue=-0.116,95%CI:-0.14 to-0.09)were independently associated with the severity of depression(Plity of life,and fatigue severity were the main independent risk factors.

Tuning the crystalline and electronic structure of ZrO_(2)via oxygen vacancies and nano-structuring for polysulfides conversion in lithium-sulfur batteries

The recent emergence of tetragonal phases zirconium dioxide(ZrO_(2))with vacancies has generated significant interest as a highly efficient and stable electrocatalyst with potential applications in trapping polysulfides and facilitating rapid conversion in lithium-sulfur batteries(LSBs).However,the reduction of ZrO_(2)is challenging,even under strong reducing atmospheres at high temperatures and pressures.Consequently,the limited presence of oxygen vacancies results in insufficient active sites and reaction interfaces,thereby hindering practical implementation.Herein,we successfully introduced abundant oxygen vacancies into ZrO_(2)at the nanoscale with the help of carbon nanotubes(CNTs-OH)through hydrogen-etching at lower temperatures and pressures.The introduced oxygen vacancies on ZrO_(2-x)/CNTs-OH can effectively rearrange charge distribution,enhance sulfiphilicity and increase active sites,contributing to high ionic and electronic transfer kinetics,strong binding energy and low redox barriers between polysulfides and ZrO_(2-x).These findings have been experimentally validated and supported by theory calculations.As a result,LSBs assembled with the ZrO_(2-x)/CNTs-OH modified separators demonstrate excellent rate performance,superior cycling stability,and ultra-high sulfur utilization.Especially,at high sulfur loading of 6 mg cm^(-2),the area capacity is still up to 6.3 mA h cm^(-2).This work provides valuable insights into the structural and functional optimization of electrocatalysts for batteries.

5S-Heudelotinone alleviates experimental colitis by shaping the immune system and enhancing the intestinal barrier in a gut microbiota-dependent manner

Aberrant changes in the gut microbiota are implicated in many diseases,including inflammatory bowel disease(IBD).Gut microbes produce diverse metabolites that can shape the immune system and impact the intestinal barrier integrity,indicating that microbe-mediated modulation may be a promising strategy for preventing and treating IBD.Although fecal microbiota transplantation and probiotic supplementation are well-established IBD therapies,novel chemical agents that are safe and exert strong effects on the gut microbiota are urgently needed.Herein,we report the total synthesis of heudelotinone and the discovery of 5S-heudelotinone(an enantiomer)as a potent agent against experimental colitis that acts by modulating the gut microbiota.5S-Heudelotinone alters the diversity and composition of the gut microbiota and increases the concentration of short-chain fatty acids(SCFAs);thus,it regulates the intestinal immune system by reducing proinflammatory immune cell numbers,and maintains intestinal mucosal integrity by modulating tight junctions(TJs).Moreover,5S-heudelotinone(2)ameliorates colitis-associated colorectal cancer(CAC)in an azoxymethane(AOM)/dextran sulfate sodium(DSS)-induced in situ carcinoma model.Together,these findings reveal the potential of a novel natural product,namely,5S-heudelotinone,to control intestinal inflammation and highlight that this product is a safe and effective candidate for the treatment of IBD and CAC.

Work-function-induced interfacial electron redistribution of MoO_(2)/WO_(2) heterostructures for high-efficiency electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction

The engineering of the electronic configurations of active sites,together with the production of more accessible active sites through heterostructure design,has been established as a forceful methodology for boosting water electrolysis performance.Herein,a facile approach is developed to fabricate well-dispersed MoO_(2) and WO_(2) nanoparticles with abundant heterointerfaces entrapped in N,P-doped carbon nanofibers(referred to as MoO_(2)/WO_(2)@N,P-CNFs hereafter)as hydrogen evolution reaction(HER)electrocatalysts in alkaline and acidic electrolytes.Extensive spectroscopic analyses and theoretical findings manifest that the heterointerface formed by the work function modulation of MoO_(2)/WO_(2) triggers the spontaneous electron redistribution from MoO_(2)to WO_(2) and a built-in electric field,which is essential to promote water adsorption,optimize the H-intermediate adsorption energy,result in the enhanced charge transfer efficiency,and ultimately increase the intrinsic HER activity.Simultaneously,the intimate confinement of MoO_(2)/WO_(2) heterostructures in the porous carbon substrate can restrain the active sites from unfavorable coarsening and detachment,thus ensuring facilitated HER kinetics and outstanding structural robustness.As a result,MoO_(2)/WO_(2)@N,P-CNFs exhibit superior catalytic HER performance in acidic and basic solutions,requiring 118 and 95 mV overpotentials to achieve 10 mA·cm^(−2),respectively,surpassing a number of reported non-noble metal-based electrocatalysts.This work provides guidelines for the rational design and construction of special metallic heterocomponents with optimized interfacial electronic structure for various electrochemical technologies.

Real-time distance field acceleration based free-viewpoint video synthesis for large sports fields

Free-viewpoint video allows the user to view objects from any virtual perspective,creating an immersive visual experience.This technology enhances the interactivity and freedom of multimedia performances.However,many free-viewpoint video synthesis methods hardly satisfy the requirement to work in real time with high precision,particularly for sports fields having large areas and numerous moving objects.To address these issues,we propose a freeviewpoint video synthesis method based on distance field acceleration.The central idea is to fuse multiview distance field information and use it to adjust the search step size adaptively.Adaptive step size search is used in two ways:for fast estimation of multiobject three-dimensional surfaces,and synthetic view rendering based on global occlusion judgement.We have implemented our ideas using parallel computing for interactive display,using CUDA and OpenGL frameworks,and have used real-world and simulated experimental datasets for evaluation.The results show that the proposed method can render free-viewpoint videos with multiple objects on large sports fields at 25 fps.Furthermore,the visual quality of our synthetic novel viewpoint images exceeds that of state-of-the-art neural-rendering-based methods.

Defect-modulated synthesis and optoelectronic properties in chemical vapor deposited CsPbBr_(3) microplates

The remarkable optoelectronic features of halide perovskite promote their potential applications in semiconductor devices beyond solar cells,which require high-quality single crystals with controlled defect levels.Herein,we investigated the synthesis mechanism of chemical vapor deposited single-crystalline all-inorganic perovskite microplates(MPs),and reported a defect-modulated photocurrent which is closely related to the growth sequence of the MPs.The MP synthesis initiates from island-like nano-disks,and subsequently transits to a layer-by-layer fashion,resulting in a defect-rich area at the center of the MPs.At elevated temperatures,these central defects may be thermally activated and become highly mobile,leading to photoluminescence quenching and degression of local and overall optoelectronic attributes,as evidenced by the spatial resolved optical and electrical scanning probe microscopy.Overall,this work shines light on the formation,proliferation and dynamics of defects in perovskites,and offers guidance for preparation of high-quality perovskites micro-crystals for functional semiconductor devices with high temperature stability.

A layered multifunctional framework based on polyacrylonitrile and MOF derivatives for stable lithium metal anode

Composite li metal anodes based on three-dimensional(3D) porous frameworks have been considered as an effective material for achieving stable li metal batteries with high energy density.However,uneven li deposition behavior still occurs at the top of 3D frameworks owing to the local accumulation of li ions.To promote uniform li deposition without top dendrite growth,herein,a layered multifunctional framework based on oxidation-treated polyacrylonitrile(OPAN) and metal-organic framework(MOF) derivatives was proposed for rationally regulating the distribution of li ions flux,nucleation sites,and electrical conductivity.Profiting from these merits,the OPAN/carbon nano fiber-MOF(CMOF) composite framework demonstrated a reversible li plating/stripping behavior for 500 cycles with a stable Coulombic efficiency of around 99.0% at the current density of 2 mA/cm~2.Besides,such a li composite anode exhibited a superior cycle lifespan of over 1300 h under a low polarized voltage of 18 mV in symmetrical cells.When the li composite anode was paired with liFePO_(4)(LFP) cathode,the obtained full cell exhibited a stable cycling over 500 cycles.Moreover,the COMSOL Multiphysics simulation was conducted to reveal the effects on homogeneous li ions distribution derived from the above-mentioned OPAN/CMOF framework and electrical insulation/conduction design.These electrochemical and simulated results shed light on the difficulties of designing stable and safe li metal anode via optimizing the 3D frameworks.

O-glycosylation is an ancient yet underappreciated protein posttranslational modification,on which many bacteria and viruses heavily rely to perform critical biological functions involved in numerous infectious diseases or even cancer.But due to the innate complexity of O-glycosylation,research techniques have been limited to study its exact role in viral attachment and entry,assembly and exit,spreading in the host cells,and the innate and adaptive immunity of the host.Recently,the advent of many newly developed methodologies(e.g.,mass spectrometry,chemical biology tools,and molecular dynamics simulations)has renewed and rekindled the interest in viral-related O-glycosylation in both viral proteins and host cells,which is further fueled by the COVID-19 pandemic.In this review,we summarize recent advances in viral-related O-glycosylation,with a particular emphasis on the mucin-type O-linkedα-N-acetylgalactosamine(O-GalNAc)on viral proteins and the intracellular O-linkedβ-N-acetylglucosamine(O-GlcNAc)modifications on host proteins.We hope to provide valuable insights into the development of antiviral reagents or vaccines for better prevention or treatment of infectious diseases.

Temporal lobe epilepsy is a multifactorial neurological dysfunction syndrome that is refractory,resistant to antiepileptic drugs,and has a high recurrence rate.The pathogenesis of temporal lobe epilepsy is complex and is not fully understood.Intracellular calcium dynamics have been implicated in temporal lobe epilepsy.However,the effect of fluctuating calcium activity in CA1 pyramidal neurons on temporal lobe epilepsy is unknown,and no longitudinal studies have investigated calcium activity in pyramidal neurons in the hippocampal CA1 and primary motor cortex M1 of freely moving mice.In this study,we used a multichannel fiber photometry system to continuously record calcium signals in CA1 and M1 during the temporal lobe epilepsy process.We found that calcium signals varied according to the grade of temporal lobe epilepsy episodes.In particular,cortical spreading depression,which has recently been frequently used to represent the continuously and substantially increased calcium signals,was found to correspond to complex and severe behavioral characteristics of temporal lobe epilepsy ranging from gradeⅡto gradeⅤ.However,vigorous calcium oscillations and highly synchronized calcium signals in CA1 and M1 were strongly related to convulsive motor seizures.Chemogenetic inhibition of pyramidal neurons in CA1 significantly attenuated the amplitudes of the calcium signals corresponding to gradeⅠepisodes.In addition,the latency of cortical spreading depression was prolonged,and the above-mentioned abnormal calcium signals in CA1 and M1 were also significantly reduced.Intriguingly,it was possible to rescue the altered intracellular calcium dynamics.Via simultaneous analysis of calcium signals and epileptic behaviors,we found that the progression of temporal lobe epilepsy was alleviated when specific calcium signals were reduced,and that the end-point behaviors of temporal lobe epilepsy were improved.Our results indicate that the calcium dynamic between CA1 and M1 may reflect specific epileptic behaviors corresponding to diff

Treatment of lacrimal gland adenoid cystic carcinoma:a systematic review and Meta-analysis

AIM:To evaluate lacrimal gland adenoid cystic carcinoma(LGACC)of prognosis in patients who underwent different treatment regimens.METHODS:We searched PubMed,EMBASE,and the Cochrane library for studies done on the treatment of LGACC,between January 1987 and April 2022.A Metaanalysis was conducted to pool the 5-year overall survival rate(OR),and the 5-year recurrence rate(RR)and 5-year metastasis rate(MR)were assessed.RESULTS:The 30 studies involved 585 patients were included in the Meta-analysis.The pooled 5-year OR with surgery alone was 50%,the 5-year RR was 63%,and the 5-year MR was 34%.The pooled 5-year OR with surgery and adjuvant radiotherapy combined was 67%(95%CI 61%,73%),the 5-year RR was 41%,and the 5-year MR was 35%.The pooled 5-year OR with surgery and adjuvant chemoradiotherapy combined was 72%(95%CI 59%,84%),the 5-year RR was 48%,and the 5-year MR was 36%.The pooled 5-year OR with surgery,intra-arterial cytoreductive chemotherapy,and adjuvant chemoradiotherapy combined was 78%(95%CI 68%,89%),the 5-year RR was 15%,and the 5-year MR was 27%.CONCLUSION:Comprehensive treatment is more effective than surgery alone.Surgery combined with intraarterial chemotherapy and adjuvant chemoradiotherapy seems to add value to the therapeutic effect of comprehensive treatment of LGACC but further high-quality research is required to validate this.
