This paper reviews the extent and severity of arsenic (As) pollution and human health in china, based on the literature published in Chinese. In the 1950s, symptoms of As poisoning such as black-foot disease in Taiwan caused by high concentrations of As in groundwater were reported throughout the world. From the late 1970s to early 1980s, endemic arsenicosis due to high-As groundwater was found in Xinjiang. In the 1990s, endemic arsenicosis was found in provinces of Inner Mongolia (groundwater), Shanxi (groundwater) and Guizhou (coal combustion). Arsenic contamination and its toxicity to soils, plants, animals and humans were recorded in the Chinese literature.
