Effect of an Airbag-selective Portal Vein Blood Arrester on the Liver after Hepatectomy:A New Technique for Selective Clamping of the Portal Vein

Objective:A novel technique was explored using an airbag-selective portal vein blood arrester that circumvents the need for an intraoperative assessment of anatomical variations in patients with complex intrahepatic space-occupying ***:Rabbits undergoing hepatectomy were randomly assigned to 4 groups:intermittent portal triad clamping(PTC),intermittent portal vein clamping(PVC),intermittent portal vein blocker with an airbag-selective portal vein blood arrester(APC),and without portal blood occlusion(control).Hepatic ischemia and reperfusion injury were assessed by measuring the 7-day survival rate,blood loss,liver function,hepatic pathology,hepatic inflammatory cytokine infiltration,hepatic malondialdehyde levels,and proliferating cell nuclear antigen ***:Liver damage was substantially reduced in the APC and PVC *** APC animals exhibited transaminase levels similar to or less oxidative stress damage and inflammatory hepatocellular injury compared to those exhibited by the PVC *** was significantly higher in the control group than in the other *** APC group had less bleeding than the PVC group because of the avoidance of portal vein skeletonization during ***,more operative time was saved in the APC group than in the PVC ***,the total 7-day survival rate in the APC group was higher than that in the PTC ***:Airbag-selective portal vein blood arresters may help protect against hepatic ischemia and reperfusion injury in rabbits undergoing partial *** technique may also help prevent liver damage in patients requiring hepatectomy.

A Novel Biosensor for the Rapid Determination of Biochemical Oxygen Demand

Objective To investigate the function of a novel biosensor used for the rapid determination of biochemical oxygen demand （BOD） which is developed by our research group based on suspended immobilized microbial cell system in a completely mixed determining chamber as a substitute of the traditional membrane system. Methods Activated sludge was immobilized by PVA gel and used as a bio-sensing element. The novel biosensor was used to measure the short time BOD value and the conventional cultivation method was used for BOD5 measurement. Results A linear relationship was observed for the difference between the current and the concentration of glucose-glutamic acid （GGA） solution below 200 mg/L with a correlation coefficient of 0.995. The optimal response of the sensor was obtained at pH 7.0 and 30℃. The sensor response was within 15 min and was reproducible within ±5% of the mean in a series of eight samples containing 75 mg/L BOD using standard GGA solution. The novel sensor response was found to be fairly constant over a period of 30 days, with ±5% fluctuations. Conclusion A relatively good agreement is found between BOD estimated by the novel BOD biosensor and that determined by the conventional 5-day BOD method. This novel BOD biosensor has good sensitivity, stability and reproducibility.

Transplantation of fetal liver epithelial progenitor cells ameliorates experimental liver fibrosis in mice

AIM： To investigate the effect of transplanted fetal liver epithelial progenitor （FLEP） cells on liver fibrosis in mice. METHODS： FLEP cells were isolated from embryonal day （ED） 14 BALB/c mice and transplanted into female syngenic BALB/c mice （n = 60）. After partial hepatectomy （PH）, diethylnitrosamine （DEN） was administered to induce liver fibrosis. Controls received FLEP cells and non-supplemented drinking water, the model group received DEN-spiked water, and the experimental group received FLEP cells and DEN. Mice were killed after 1, 2, and 3 mo, and alanine aminotransferase （ALT）, aspartate aminotransferase （AST）, hyaluronic acid （HA）, and laminin （LN） in serum, and hydroxyproline （Hyp） content in liver were assessed. Alpha-smooth muscle actin （α-SMA） of liver was tested by immunohistochemistry. Transplanted male mice FLEP cells were identified by immunocytochemistry for sty （sex determination region for Y chromosome） protein. RESULTS： Serum ALT, AST, HA, and LN were markedly reduced by transplanted FLEP cells. Liver Hyp content and （α-SMA staining in mice receiving FLEP cells were lower than that of the model group, which was consistent with altered liver pathology. Transplanted cells proliferated and differentiated into hepatocytes and bile duct epithelial cells with 30%-50% repopulation in the liver fibrosis induced by DEN after 3 mo. CONCLUSION： Transplanted FLEP cells proliferate and differentiate into hepatocytes and bile duct epithelial cells with high repopulation capacity in the fiberized liver induced by DEN, which restores liver function and reduces liver fibrosis.

The effect of nano-carbon black content(O,8 and 12 wt.%)on the wettability of molten steel on Al_(2)O_(3)-C substrates was investigated by the sessile drop wetting method at 1500℃ under argon *** the beginning of the wetting experiment,the contact angle decreased with the increase in nano-carbon black *** the wetting experiment progressed,FeAl_(2)0_(4) layer and sheet Al_(2)O_(3) layer were found at the interface between the molten steel and the Al_(2)O_(3)-C substrates with O and 8 wt.% nano-carbon black content,and the contact angle deceased with *** the content of nano-carbon black was 12 wt.%,a large number of nano-Al_(2)O_(3) whiskers were observed,which made the contact angle between the molten steel and Al_(2)O_(3)-C substrate become *** on the scanning electron microscope and energy dispersive spectrometry results,the formation mechanism of FeAl2O4 layer and Al_(2)O_(3) layer and the interfacial reaction mechanism were proposed.

Clonal Transgenerational Effects Transmit for Multiple Generations in a Floating Plant

Environmental conditions of a parent plant can influence the performance of their clonal offspring,and such clonal transgenerational effects may help offspring adapt to different ***,it is still unclear how many vegetative generations clonal transgenerational effects can transmit for and whether it depends on the environmental conditions of the *** grew the ancestor ramets of the floating clonal plant Spirodela polyrhiza under a high and a low nutrient level and obtained the so-called 1^(st)-generation offspring ramets of two types(from these two environments).Then we grew the 1^(st)-generation offspring ramets of each type under the high and the low nutrient level and obtained the so-called 2^(nd)-generation offspring ramets of four *** repeated this procedure for another five times and analyzed clonal transgenerational effects on growth,morphology and biomass allocation of the 1^(st)-to the 6^(th)-generation offspring *** found positive,negative or neutral(no)transgenerational effects of the ancestor nutrient condition on the offspring of ***,depending on the number of vegetative generations,the nutrient condition of the offspring environment and the traits *** observed significant clonal transgenerational effects on the 6^(th)-generation offspring;such effects occurred for all three types of traits(growth,morphology and allocation),but varied depending on the nutrient condition of the offspring environment and the traits *** results suggest that clonal transgenerational effects can transmit for multiple vegetative generations and such impacts can vary depending on the environmental conditions of offspring.

An accurate total energy calculation is essential in materials *** date,many tight-binding(TB)approaches based on parameterized hopping can produce electronic structures comparable to those obtained using first-principles ***,TB approaches still have limited applicability for determining material properties derived from the total *** is,the predictive power of the TB total energy is impaired by an inaccurate evaluation of the repulsive *** complexity associated with the parametrization of TB repulsive potentials is the weak link in this *** this study,we propose a new method for obtaining the pairwise TB repulsive potential for crystalline materials by employing the chen-Möbius inversion *** show that the TB-based phonon dispersions,calculated using the resulting repulsive potential,compare well with those obtained by first-principles calculations for various systems,including covalent and ionic bulk materials and twodimensional *** present approach only requires the first-principles total energy and TB electronic band energy as input and does not involve any *** striking feature enables us to generate repulsive potentials programmatically.

Container-based virtualization isbecoming increasingly popular in cloud computing due to its efficiency and *** isolation is a fundamental property of *** works have indicated weak resource isolation could cause significant performance degradation for containerized applications and enhanced resource ***,current studies have almost not discussed the isolation problems of page cache which is a key resource for *** leverage memory cgroup to control page cache ***,existing policy introduces two major problems in a container-based ***,containers can utilize more memory than limited by their cgroup,effectively breaking memory ***,the Os kernel has to evict page cache to make space for newly-arrived memory requests,slowing down containerized *** paper performs an empirical study of these problems and demonstrates the performance impacts on containerized *** we propose pCache(precise control of page cache)to address the problems by dividing page cache into private and shared and controlling both kinds of page cache separately and *** do so,pCache leverages two new technologies:fair account(f-account)and evict on demand(EoD).F-account splits the shared page cache charging based on per-container share to prevent containers from using memory for free,enhancing memory *** EoD reduces unnecessary page cache evictions to avoid the performance *** evaluation results demonstrate that our system can effectively enhance memory isolation for containers and achieve substantial performance improvement over the original page cache management policy.

Influence of increased epicardial adipose tissue volume on 1-year in-stent restenosis in patients who received coronary stent implantation

Background Epicardial adipose tissue （EAT） is significantly associated with the formation and composition of coronary atherosclerotic plaque, cardiac events and the clinical prognosis of coronary heart disease. But, whether increased EAT deposition may affect the incidence of in-stent restenosis （ISR） is currently unclear. This study used coronary computed tomography angiography （CCTA） as a mean to investigate whether increased EAT volume was associated with ISR. Methods A total of 364 patients who underwent 64-slice CCTA examination for the evaluation of suspected coronary artery disease, and subsequently underwent percutaneous coronary intervention （PCI） for the first time, and then accepted coronary angiography （CA） follow-up for ISR examination in one year, were retrospectively included in this study. EAT volume was measured by CCTA examination. CA follow-up was obtained between 9 and 15 months. ISR was defined as 〉 50% kuninal diameter narrowing of the stent segment or peri-stent segment. EAT volume was compared between patients with and without ISR and additional well-known predictors of ISR were compared. Results EAT volume was significantly increased in patients with ISR compared with those without ISR （154.5 ± 74.6 mL vs. 131.0 ± 52.2 mL, P 〈 0.001）. The relation between ISR and EAT volume remained significant after adjustment for conventional cardiovascular risk factors and angiographic parameters. Conclusions EAT volume was related with ISR and may provide additional information for future ISR.

Automated screening of primary cell-based aptamers for targeting and therapy of pancreatic cancer

Although it has been developed for many years, nucleic acid aptamer screening technology still fails to be widely used, a considerable part of it is due to the variability of tumor cell morphology, which leads to the use of immortalized cell lines in the laboratory to screen nucleic acid aptamers for recognition ability of tumor cells in the diseased *** address this, primary cells that can be stably passaged were isolated and extracted from spontaneous tumors of genetically engineered pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma model mice in this ***, an automated screening instrument for nucleic acid aptamers developed autonomously by our group was used to perform efficient aptamer screening using a limited number of cells, and the obtained nucleic acid aptamers were affinity verified at the cellular ***, to answer the question of the cell growth environment difference on the recognition ability of nucleic acid aptamers, we verified its targeting ability to tumors in vivo on a nude mice xenograft tumor model, and further used a common antitumor drug doxorubicin combined with nucleic acid aptamers to verify the drug loading ability of this aptamer combined with the targeting therapeutic ability.
