Does prostate-specific antigen (PSA)mass or free PSA mass improve the accuracy of predicting total prostate volume in relation to obesity in men with biopsy-proven benign prostatic hyperplasia?

We evaluated whether the prostate-specific antigen (PSA)mass or free PSA (fPSA)mass (i.e.,absolute amount of total circulating PSA or fPSA protein,respectively),versus serum PSA or fPSA concentration,improves the accuracy of predicting the total prostate volume (TPV)in relation to *** men whose multicore (≥12)transrectal prostate biopsy was negative,586 who had a PSA of <10 ng ml^-1 and underwent the fPSA test prior to biopsy were *** PSA mass or fPSA mass (pg)was calculated by multiplying the serum level by plasma *** each TPV cut-off point (30 ml,40 ml,and 50 ml),the areas under the receiver operating characteristics curve (AUCs)of each variable were compared in obesity-based *** of fPSA and fPSA mass for predicting TPV were significantly larger than those for PSA and PSA mass by 8.7%-12.1%at all cut-off points. Subgroup analyses based on obesity showed that,although PSA mass and fPSA mass enhanced accuracy by 4%(P =0.031)and 1.8%(P =0.003),respectively,for determining TPVs of ≥30 ml and ≥50 ml in obese and overweight men,they did not improve the accuracy in most other combinations of the degrees of obesity with TPV cut-off ***,compared with serum PSA or fPSA,the absolute amount of PSA or fPSA protein mass improved the accuracy of predicting TPV in obese men very minimally and only for certain TPV cut-off ***,these indicators may not provide clinically meaningful improvement in predicting TPV in obese men.

Nanostructured hafnium-doped strontium oxide film for homeotropic/homogeneous convertible liquid crystal alignment depending on the curing temperature

A hafnium strontium oxide(HfSrO)liquid crystal(LC)alignment film was efficiently created through brush coating,and its ability to change the LC alignment direction was confirmed.A brush was applied to HfSrO sol coated on an indium-tin oxide substrate,after which the coating was solidified at var-ious curing *** was confirmed that a directional micro/nanostructure was formed above 280°C due to the shear stresses caused by the movement of the brush *** chemical changes were analyzed by using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and contact angle *** the curing temperature increased,the prevalence of oxygen bonds increased and the contact angle decreased,thereby increasing the surface *** anisotropic boundary of the micro-grooves and the van der Waals forces due to an increase in surface energy changed the alignment direction of LC mole-cules from vertical to horizontal,as verified through polarized optical microscopy and pretilt angle ***,the efficiency of the brush-coating method,which dramatically simplifies the LC alignment film process,was *** homeotropic/homogeneous LC alignment property of the HfSrO film produced through brush coating depending on the curing temperature provides an innovative approach for LC alignment.

Ischemic colitis due to obstruction of mesenteric and splenic veins: A case report

Ischemic injury to the bowel is a well known disease entity that has a wide spectrum of pathological and clinical findings. A sudden drop in the colonic blood supply is essential to its development. We encountered a 41-year-old male patient, who presented with abdominal pain and bloody diarrhea. A colonoscopy showed markedly edematous mucosa with tortuous dilatation of the veins and a deep ulceration at the rectosigmoid junction. On an abdominal computed tomography (CT) scan and CT angiography, the mesenteric and splenic veins were absent with numerous venous collaterals for drainage. The patient gradually responded to oral aminosalicylate therapy, and was in remission after nine months. In most cases, non-occlusive ischemic injury is caused by idiopathic form and occlusive ischemia is caused by abnormalities of arteries and acute venous thrombosis. However, chronic venous insufficiency due to obstruction of macrovascular mesenteric vein rarely causes ischemia of the bowel. This report describes the first case of ischemic colitis caused by obstruction of the mesenteric and splenic veins.

Helicobacter pylori seropositivity in diabetic patients is associated with microalbuminuria

In our previous study, we found that the edible alcohol extract of the root of the medicinal plant Rhodiola crenulata（RCE） improved spatial cognition in a rat model of Alzheimer＇s disease. Another study from our laboratory showed that RCE enhanced neural cell proliferation in the dentate gyrus of the hippocampus and prevented damage to hippocampal neurons in a rat model of chronic stress-induced depression. However, the mechanisms underlying the neuroprotective effects of RCE are unclear. In the present study, we investigated the anti-apoptotic effect of RCE and its neuroprotective mechanism of action in a rat model of Alzheimer＇s disease established by intracerebroventricular injection of streptozotocin. The rats were pre-administered RCE at doses of 1.5, 3.0 or 6.0 g/kg for 21 days before model establishment. ATP and cytochrome c oxidase levels were significantly decreased in rats with Alzheimer＇s disease. Furthermore, neuronal injury was obvious in the hippocampus, with the presence of a large number of apoptotic neurons. In comparison, in rats given RCE pretreatment, ATP and cytochrome c oxidase levels were markedly increased, the number of apoptotic neurons was reduced, and mitochondrial injury was mitigated. The 3.0 g/kg dose of RCE had the optimal effect. These findings suggest that pretreatment with RCE prevents mitochondrial dysfunction and protects hippocampal neurons from apoptosis in rats with Alzheimer＇s disease.

Grasper type scissors for endoscopic submucosal dissection of gastric epithelial neoplasia

AIM:To evaluate the efficacy and safety of grasper type scissors(GTS)for endoscopic submucosal dissection(ESD)of gastric epithelial ***:The study was performed by 4 endoscopists in 4 institutions affiliated to The Catholic University of *** was performed in 76 consecutive patients with gastric epithelial neoplasia by using the GTS(37 patients)or the hook knife plus coagrasper(HKC)(39 patients).The complete resection rate,complication rate,total time elapsed and elapsed time per square centimeter of the dissected specimen were analyzed between the GTS and HKC ***:The mean age of the GTS group was 62.3±11.4 years and mean age of the HKC group was 65.6±10.1 *** adenocarcinoma was found in32.4%in the GTS group and 33.3%in the HKC *** procedures were performed without interruption in every case in both *** en bloc resection rates of both groups were 100%.The total time elapsed during the procedure was 44.54±21.72 min in the GTS group and 43.77±21.84 min in the HKC group(P=0.88)and the time elapsed per square centimeter of the resected lesion was 7.53±6.35 min/cm2in the GTS group and 6.92±5.93 min/cm2in the HKC group(P=0.66).The overall complication rate was not significantly different between the two ***:GTS is a safe and effective device for ESD compared with *** can be performed with GTS alone,which can reduce the costs for ESD.

Inhibitory effect of Jeju endemic seaweeds on the production of pro-inflammatory mediators in mouse macrophage cell line RAW 264.7

Seaweed has been used in traditional cosmetics and as a herbal medicine in treatments for cough,boils,goiters,stomach ailments,and urinary diseases,and for reducing the incidence of tumors,ulcers,and *** the fact that seaweeds are frequently used in the practice of human health,little is known about the role of seaweed in the context of *** study aimed to investigate the influence of Jeju endemic seaweed on a mouse macrophage cell line(RAW 264.7) under the stimulation of lipopolysaccharide(LPS).Ethyl acetate extracts obtained from 14 different kinds of Jeju seaweeds were screened for inhibitory effects on pro-inflammatory *** results revealed that extracts from five seaweeds,Laurencia okamurae,Grateloupia elliptica,Sargassum thun-bergii,Gloiopeltis furcata,and Hizikia fusiformis,were potent inhibitors of the production of pro-inflammatory mediators such as nitric oxide(NO),prostaglandin E2(PGE2),interleukin-6(IL-6),and tumor necrosis factor-α(TNF-α).Based on these results,the anti-inflammatory effects and low cell toxicity of these seaweed extracts suggest potential thera-peutic applications in the regulation of the inflammatory response.

Efficacy of Seprafilm~ graft with adhesiolysis in experimentally induced lid adhesion in rabbits

AIM:To evaluate the efficacy of Seprafilm transplantation following adhesiolysis for preventing postoperative readhesion and improving surgical outcomes. METHODS:Primary blepharoplasty was carried out on both eyelids of 18 albino rabbits. After 2 weeks, a new skin incision was made, and adhesiolysis was performed on both eyelids. The rabbits were categorized into two groups, one with adhesiolysis alone in the left eyelid (control group), and the other with adhesiolysis with a Seprafilm graft in the right eyelid (Seprafilm group). The degrees of inflammation and fibrosis were examined with hematoxylin-eosin (HE) and Masson’s trichrome stains. Expression of α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA) was also immunohistochemically examined. RESULTS:Eyelid examination immediately after the operation revealed mild swelling and hemorrhage in both groups, but these symptoms resolved after 1 week-2 weeks, and eyelid shape had recovered completely in both groups. Microscopic assessments demonstrated that the Seprafilm group showed less inflammation and fibrosis than the control group. The Seprafilm group also exhibited fewer α-SMA-positive cells than the control group. CONCLUSION:Based on these findings, we conclude that Seprafilm graft with adhesiolysis is an effective method for preventing postoperative readhesions after eyelid surgery.

Comparison of postoperative corneal changes between dry eye and non-dry eye in a murine cataract surgery model

AIM： To compare the effects of the surgical insult of cataract surgery on corneal inflammatory infiltration, neovascularization （NV） and lymphangiogenesis （LY） between the dry eye and non-dry eye in murine cataract surgery models.METHODS： We established two groups of animals, one with normal eyes （non-dry eye） and the second with induced dry eyes. In both groups, we used surgical insults to mimic human cataract surgery, which consisted of lens extraction, corneal incision and suture. After harvesting of corneas on the 9th postoperative day and immunohistochemical staining, we compared NV, LY and CD11b＋ cell infiltration in the corneas.RESULTS： Dry eye group had significantly more inflammatory infiltration （21.75%±7.17% r/s 3.65%±1.49%; P=0.049）. The dry eye group showed significantly more NV （48.21% ±4.02% ys 26.24% ±6.01% ; P =0.016） and greater levels of LY （9.27%±0.48% ys 4.84%±1.15%; P= 0.007）. In corneas on which no surgery was performed, there was no induction of NV in both the dry and non- dry group, but dry eye group demonstrated more CD11b＋ cells infiltration than the non-dry eye group （0.360%± 0.160% vs 0.023%±0.006%; P=0.068）. Dry eye group showed more NV than non-dry eye group in both topical PBS application and subconjunctival PBS injection （P= 0.020 and 0.000, respectively）.
