Purpose Children require 9-11 h sleep to ensure adequate growth and development by optimizing the efficiency of a number of biological systems,including the cardiovascular *** study aim was to determine whether short sleep duration(justed]association between short sleep duration and cfPWV(β=0.245,95%CI 0.093-0.396).This association persisted following adjustment for demographic factors and was strengthened following adjustment for lifestyle behaviors(β=0.331,95%CI 0.109-0.553).Conclusions Short sleepers(<9 h)had a clinically meaningful elevated aortic arterial stiffness in comparison to those sleeping the recommended daily 9-11 *** duration may be important for cardiovascular health independent of other lifestyle behaviors.

Cross tolerance, whereby tolerance to one environmental stress is correlated with tolerance to other stressors, is thought to be widespread in insects. We used lines of Drosophila melanogaster Meigen （Diptera： Drosophilidae） selected for survival at a 1-h exposure to -5℃ to examine the extent to which this selection results in increased tolerance to other stresses, including high and low temperatures, desiccation and starvation. While selection improved tolerance to acute cold exposure and survival at -5℃, there was little effect of selection regime on tolerance to other stressors. There was no correlation between tolerances to any of the stressors, suggesting different mechanisms of tolerance. This supports arguments that correlations between stress tolerances during selection experiments with D. melanogaster may be coincidental. The magnitude of heat-hardening was apparently constrained by basal tolerance among lines, but the magnitude of the rapid cold-hardening response was not correlated with basal cold tolerance, implying that the relationship between inducible and basal tolerances differs at high and low temperatures.

Hull-less barley is increasingly offering scope for breeding grains with improved characteristics for human nutrition; however, recalcitrance of hull-less cultivars to transformation has limited the use of these varieties. To overcome this limitation, we sought to develop an effective transformation system for hull-less barley using the cultivar Torrens. Torrens yielded a transformation efficiency of 1.8%, using a modified Agrobacterium transformation method. This method was used to over-express genes encoding synthases for the important dietary fiber component, 0,3;1,4）-β-glucan （mixed-linkage glucan）, primarily present in starchy endosperm cell walls. Over-expression of the HvCslF6 gene, driven by an endosperm-specific promoter, produced lines where mixed-linkage glucan content increased on average by 45%, peaking at 70% in some lines, with smaller increases in transgenic HvCsIH1 grain. Transgenic HvCslF6 lines displayed alterations where grain had a darker color, were more easily crushed than wild type and were smaller. This was associated with an enlarged cavity in the central endosperm and changes in cell morphology, including aleurone and sub-aleurone cells. This work provides proof-of-concept evidence that mixed-linkage glucan content in hull-less barley grain can be increased by over-expression of the HvCslF6 gene, but also indicates that hull-less cultivars may be more sensitive to attempts to modify cell wall composition.

Glomus Tumor of the Kidney: A Case Report with CT, MRI, and Histopathological Findings

We describe the computed tomographic (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) features of a very rare renal neoplasm, a glomus tumor. Our patient was a 68-year-old woman with a history of high grade T1 stage bladder cancer, status post intravesical Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) therapy and left ureteral stent placement, who presented for routine follow-up imaging evaluation of the urothelial tract. Computed tomographic urography (CTU) incidentally demonstrated a 1.7 cm well-circumscribed, non-calcified, non-fat containing lesion in the left renal cortex with arterial phase continuous peripheral rim enhancement and central hypoattenuation relative to enhanced renal parenchyma. Subsequent MRI showed the lesion to be isointense in signal intensity relative to the renal parenchyma on T1-weighted imaging and hyperintense on T2-weighted imaging. No macroscopic fat or microscopic lipid was seen within the lesion, and there were no foci of susceptibility artifact on T1-weighted images. Diffusion-weighted and apparent diffusion coefficient images demonstrated no restricted diffusion. Contrast-enhanced images demonstrated continuous peripheral rim enhancement in the arterial phase and persistent rim enhancement with partial centripetal fill in of enhancement on venous phase images, similar to the pattern seen on CT. Partial left nephrectomy was performed for the suspected solid renal neoplasm. Histopathological assessment was diagnostic of a renal glomus tumor.

Introduction Patients with stroke-like symptoms may be underutilising emergency medical services and avoiding hospitalisation during the COVID-19 *** investigated a decline in admissions for stroke and transient ischaemic attack(TIA)and emergency department(ED)stroke alert *** We retrospectively compiled total weekly hospital admissions for stroke and TIA between 31 December 2018 and 21 April 2019 versus 30 December 2019 and 19 April 2020 at five US tertiary academic comprehensive stroke centres in cities with early COVID-19 outbreaks in Boston,New York City,Providence and *** collected available data on ED stroke alerts,stroke severity using the National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale(NIHSS)and time from symptom onset to hospital *** Compared with 31 December 2018 to 21 April 2019,a decline in stroke/TIA admissions and ED stroke alerts occurred during 30 December 2019 to 19 April 2020(p trend<0.001 for each).The declines coincided with state stay-at home recommendations in late *** greatest decline in hospital admissions was observed between 23 March and 19 April 2020,with a 31%decline compared with the corresponding weeks in *** of the five centres with 2019 and 2020 stroke alert data had a 46%decline in ED stroke alerts in late March and April 2020,compared with *** baseline NIHSS during these 4 weeks was 10 in 2020 and 7 in *** was no difference in time from symptom onset to hospital *** At these five large academic US hospitals,admissions for stroke and TIA declined during the COVID-19 *** was a trend for fewer ED stroke alerts at three of the five centres with available 2019 and 2020 *** stroke therapies are time-sensitive,so decreased healthcare access or utilisation may lead to more disabling or fatal strokes,or more severe non-neurological complications related to *** findings underscore the indirect effects of this *** health offici

New radiolarian ages show that the island arc-related Acoje block of the Zambales Ophiolite Complex is possibly of Late jurassic to Early Cretaceous *** dating of its plutonic and volcanichypabyssal rocks yielded middle Eocene *** the other hand,the paleontological dating of the sedimentary carapace of the transitional mid-ocean ridge-island arc affiliated Coto block of the ophiolite complex,together with isotopic age datings of its dikes and mafic cumulate rocks,also yielded Eocene *** offers the possibility that the Zambales Ophiolite Complex could have:(1)evolved from a Mesozoic arc(Acoje block)that split to form a Cenozoic back-arc basin(Coto block),(2)through faulting,structurally juxtaposed a Mesozoic oceanic crust with a younger Cenozoic lithospheric fragment or(3)through the interplay of slab rollback,slab break-off and,at a later time,collision with a microcontinent fragment,caused the formation of an island arc-related ophiolite block(Acoje)that migrated trench-ward resulting into the generation of a back-arc basin(Coto block)with a limited subduction *** Meso-Cenozoic ophiolite complex is compared with the other oceanic lithosphere fragments along the western seaboard of the Philippines in the context of their evolution in terms of their recognized environments of generation.

AIM:To study whether the inflammatory bowel disease(IBD)colon which exhibits varying severity and cytokine levels across its mucosa create varying types of transepithelial ***:We examined the effects of tumor necrosis factor-α(TNF-α),interferon-γ(IFN-γ),interleukin-1-β(IL1β)and hydrogen peroxide(H_2O_2)-singly and in combinations-on barrier function of CACO-2 cell *** focus was on the type(not simply the magnitude)of transepithelial leak generated by these agents as measured by transepithelial electrical resistance(TER)and transepithelial flux of ^(14)C-D-mannitol,3H-Lactulose and ^(14)C-Polyethylene glycol as radiolabeled probe *** isoquinoline alkaloid,berberine,was then examined for its ability to reduce specific types of transepithelial ***:Exposure to TNF-α alone(200 ng/mL;48 h)induced a 50% decrease in TER,i.e.,increased leak of Na^+ and Cl--with only a marginal but statistically significant increase in transepithelial leak of ^(14)C-mannitol(jm).Exposure to TNF-α + IFN-γ(200 ng/mL;48 h)+ IL1β(50 ng/mL;48 h)did not increase the TER change(from TNF-α alone),but there was now a 100% increase in j_*** however was no increase in transepithelial leak of two larger probe molecules,~3H-lactulose and ^(14)C-polyethylene glycol(PEG).However,exposure to TNF-α + IFN-γ + IL1β followed by a 5 h exposure to2 mmol/L H_2O_2 resulted in a 500% increase in ^(14)C-PEG leak as well as leak to the luminal mitogen,epidermal growth ***:This model of graded transepithelial leak is useful in evaluating therapeutic agents reducing IBD morbidity by reducing barrier leak to various luminal substances.
