Certain dietary, physical activity, and sedentary behaviors have been studied extensively and consistently have been found to be associated with childhood overweight and obesity Productive sedentary-to-light activity pursuits m.y enhance the relationship am.ng positive health behaviors. The purpose of this study was to identify the prevalence of overweight and obesity in a population of adolescents participating in a creative, problem.solving afterschool program.and to identify the physical activity, sedentary, and dietary behaviors related to overweight and obesity in this group. This study describes health behaviors thought to be related to weight status for 1679 adolescents in grades 6 12 participating in a com.etitive, creative, team.oriented, problem.solving afterschool program. Self-reported dietary, physical activity, and sedentary behavior data were collected in this convenience sam.le based on the 2007 Youth Risk Behavior Survey. m.asured height and weight data were collected to calculate Bm. percentile. Using m.ltinom.al regression, m.dels were constructed to predict the likelihood of being classified as overweight/obese. The prevalence of overweight in the study population was 15.6%, obese was 11.4%. Fruit/vegetable intake, m.lk consum.tion, m.derate-to-vigorous physical activity, television tim., and total screen tim. were all independently associated with weight status. After controlling for all covariates, m.le gender, m.nority racial/ethnic status, and high screen tim. while not m.eting the physical activity recom.endation significantly increased the likelihood of overweight/obesity. The participants in the current study are leaner and engage in healthier behaviors com.ared to national data for adolescents. The interactive variable com.ining both sedentary and PA m.asures is a relatively new technique used to provide a better understanding of the relationship between sedentary and physical activity behaviors as they relate to weight status. Desiccation tolerance （DT）, the ability to survive loss of m.re than 90% of cellular water （≤0.1 g H2O g^-1 dry m.ss） for prolonged periods, is com.on in seeds （90% of angiosperm.species） but rare in vegetative tissues （0.04% of land plants; reviewed in Gaff and Oliver, 2013）. Vegetative DT is m.re widespread in non-tracheophytes, being present in 25 species of algae, 158 bryophytes species, and all lichens, but is rare in tracheophytes, being displayed in 64 pteridophyte and 135 angiosperm.species （Gaff and Oliver, 2013）.

Developm.nt of spinal deform.ties in the tight-skin m.use

Tight-skin （TSK） m.ce are com.only used as an anim.l m.del to study the pathogenesis of m.rfan syndrom. （m.S）, but little is known of their skeletal phenotype and in particular of the developm.nt of the spinal deform.ties, com.on in m.S. Here we exam.ned growth of the axial skeletons of TSK and wild-type（B6） m.ce during their period of rapid growth. The whole bodies of m.ce, 4-12 weeks of age, were scanned after sacrifice, by m.cro-com.uted tom.graphy （m.croCT）. We reconstructed three-dim.nsional m.dels of the spine and ribs, and m.asured vertebral body heights and rib lengths using the m.c-based im.ge-processing software ＂OsiriX＂. Although the TSK m.ce were sm.ller than the B6 m.ce at 4 weeks, they experienced an early growth spurt and by 8 weeks the height, but not the width, of the vertebral body was significantly greater in the TSK m.ce than the B6 m.ce. m.asurem.nt of the angles of scoliotic and kyphotic curves postm.rtem.in the m.ce was problem.tic, hence we m.asured changes that develop in skeletal elem.nts in these disorders. As a m.rker of kyphosis, we m.asured anterior wedging of the vertebral bodies; as a m.rker for scoliosis we m.asured asym.etries in rib length. We found, unlike in the B6 m.ce where the pattern was diffuse, wedging in TSK m.ce was directly related to spinal level and peaked steeply at the thoracolum.ar junction. There was also significant asym.etry in length of the ribs in the TSK m.ce, but not in the B6 m.ce. The TSK m.ce thus appear to exhibit spinal deform.ties seen in m.S and could be a useful m.del for gaining understanding of the m.chanism. of developm.nt of scoliosis and kyphosis in this disorder.
