Introduction: Helicobacter pylori inf.ction is a real health problem worldwide. It is the most common chronic bacterial inf.ction in the world, and is particularly prevalent in developing countries. Objective: To determine the f.equency of.Helicobacter pylori inf.ction and to study the epidemiological, clinical and endoscopic characteristics associated with this inf.ction in Brazzaville. Patients and Methods: This was a descriptive cross-sectional study conducted f.om January to November 2020, i.e. 11 months. This work f.cused on 100 symptomatic patients over 18 years old ref.rred f.r upper GI endoscopy. Gastric biopsies f.r biological study by urease test and molecular study by real time PCR technique were taken. Results: With a mean age of.46.32 ± 15.20 years, the f.equency of.Hp inf.ction was 91%, with a f.male predominance of.53%. The sex ratio was 0.92. The average age was 46.32 ± 15.20 years. Carriage of.the inf.ction was more important in households with more than 3 persons, in patients consuming public tap water and in those using both types of.sanitary f.cilities. Endoscopy was indicated f.r epigastralgia in 93.1% of.cases. About 56.14% of.the inf.cted patients had normal mucosa versus 12.28% with ulcerated lesions and 22.81% with gastritis. Conclusion: The prevalence of.Helicobacter pylori inf.ction is signif.cant in Congo, justif.ing early detection in order to improve management.

Background: Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is a public health problem and is highly endemic in Sub-Saharan Af.ica. This study was carried out to determine the prevalence and potential risk f.ctors of.hepatitis C virus in pregnant women. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study involving pregnant women who attended at seven antenatal clinics in Pointe Noire, f.om June to November 2018. Structured questionnaires were used to obtain participants data. Samples were screened f.r HCV inf.ction by using 4th ELISA methods and data analysis was done by Epi-inf. version 7.0 statistical sof.ware. Results: A total of.150 pregnant women were included, out of.which 11 (7.3%) were positive f.r HCV. The high proportion of.HCV was f.und in age group 25 - 34 years (45.4%), educated (81.1%), prof.ssional (36.4%) and 54.6% were in second trimester gestational stage. Moreover, 54.6% of.HCV positive patients had scarif.cation and 45.5% had a history of.surgery. There was not a statistically signif.cant association between demographics characteristics, risks f.ctors and HCV seropositivity (p > 0.05). Conclusion: This study showed a high prevalence of.HCV inf.ction and conf.rmed that this inf.ction is a public health problem in pregnant women in Pointe Noire.

Introduction: Viral hepatitis B (VHL) is a public health problem, particularly in sub-Sahara Af.ica. The aim of.this study was to assess vaccination coverage against HBV in children in Brazzaville. Patients and Methods: This was a cross-sectional analytical study conducted in Brazzaville health centres f.om January to September 2019. It involved children aged between six months and six years who received a vaccination against HBV. Sampling was exhaustive and based on stratif.ed sampling. Results: The overall prevalence of.children vaccinated against HBV in Brazzaville was 96.2%. It was insuf.icient in the Talangai health district (79%). The pentavalent vaccine was administered to 97.7% of.children, 85% of.whom had received all three doses. The reasons f.r incomplete vaccination were parents’ ignorance of.HVB (85.6%) and of.vaccination (14.3%). Conclusion: Although the prevalence of.vaccinated children is high in Brazzaville, it is still insuf.icient in some health districts, particularly Talangai, because parents are unaware of.the disease and of.vaccination. Pentavalent is the only vaccine available in the national vaccination programme, which is why an ef.ective national vaccination policy needs to be put in place. .

Ingestion of.caustics by children is serious because of.the increase in their f.equency and the dif.iculties due to their management. Objective: To improve the management of.caustic lesions in Pediatric Department at the University Hospital of.Brazzaville. Patients and Methods: Prospective study was conducted f.om January 2014 to December 2015 in the Pediatric Departments of.the UHB and centers of.digestive endoscopy in Brazzaville. All children who ingested a caustic product and hospitalized were included af.er obtaining parental’s consent. The studied parameters were: Age, sex, nature and quantity of.the caustic, the f.mily’s attitude, clinical signs, endoscopic results according to Zagar’s classif.cation, therapeutic modalities and evolution. Results: 8292 children were hospitalized and 68 because of.the ingestion of.caustic, a f.equency of.0.8%. The average age was 23.6 months [2 months - 16 years]. The male sex was predominant (57.4%). Ingestion was accidental in 88.2% and voluntary in 11.8%. f.ctors f.voring ingestion were storage methods (81.5%) and parental’s inattention or negligence (10.8%). Bleach was the most incriminated caustic (54.4%) f.llowed by caustic soda (29.4%). The estimated quantity ingested was assumed to be minimal in 61.7%. Unsuitable acts were practiced by the f.mily bef.re the medical consultation in 66.1%. The dominant symptoms were digestive (47%) and neurological (25%). The average time to perf.rm endoscopy was 48 hours in 88.2%. Endoscopy revealed lesions in 51.7%, the dif.erent stages were I (12 cases), II (16 cases) and III (3 cases). The mains f.ctors of.gravity were inappropriate gestures (85%) and the non-respect of.the f.sting (9%). Proton pump inhibitors were used in 50%. The evolution was f.vorable f.r in 73.5%. Conclusion: Ingestion of.caustics by children is most of.en accidental f.vored by the inadequate packaging and storage. Prevention is about educating people in order to reduce their f.equency.

Introduction: Viral hepatitis B is a communicable disease that is preventable by vaccination. Knowledge of.transmission routes and prevention methods could play a key role in limiting and reducing the spread of.the disease. Aim: This was a prospective study that was carried out f.om July 1 to September 30, 2018 in the department of.gastroenterology and internal medicine in people carrying the hepatitis B virus. All patients were asked about their knowledge, attitudes and practices regarding viral hepatitis B. Materials and Methods: This was a cross-sectional study, collecting prospective data, which was carried out f.om July 1 to September 30, 2018 in the gastroenterology department of.CHUB (University Hospital of.Brazzaville). Eligible f.r the study were all patients who consulted or were f.llowed in the ward f.r HBV inf.ction during the study period. All patients were asked about their knowledge, attitudes and practices regarding viral hepatitis B. Af.er obtaining inf.rmed consent, we asked patients about knowledge, attitudes and practices towards the hepatitis B virus. The data was collected on a pre-established survey sheet respecting anonymity and conf.dentiality. CSPro 7 sof.ware and SPSS 17 sof.ware were used f.r data entry and analysis. Chi-square was used to compare the percentages. These were expressed with their 95% conf.dence intervals [95% CI]. A value of.p 0.005 was considered signif.cant. Results: f.rty-two patients were included in the study, these were 66.7% (n = 28) men and 33.3% (n = 14) women. The average age was 38.76 ± 10.9 years. 45.2% of.them (n = 19) were single and 59.5% (n = 25) had the next highest level of.education. Thirty-nine patients had no knowledge of.the source of.their contamination;the sexual route was the most cited (61.9%). Alcohol consumption was rated badly by 38 patients (90.5%);of.these 22 (52.4%) thought it worsened the disease. Lack of.knowledge of.an HBV carrier in the f.mily was noted in 33 (78.6%) patients;20 (47.6%)

Dif.use variolif.rm gastritis is a rare attack of.the gastric mucosa occurring mostly on atopic ground. This report is based on the observation of.a 16-year-old girl with dif.use variolif.rm gastritis discovered af.er an internal medical examination via endoscope af.er attempting a suicidal act by overdosing herself.with Ibuprof.n. Af.er the medical examination of.the patient. Despite the quantity of.ingested ibuprof.n and presence of.Helicobacter pylori on the biopsie, the particularity of.this study is that there is no exudative lesion of.the gastric mucosa. With hélicobacter pylori eradication evolution was f.vorable.

The involvement of general practitioners in the early detection of viral hepatitis B and C must be paramount. The objectives of this work were to assess GPs’ knowledge, attitude and practice with regard to screening for viral hepatitis B and C. We carried out a cross-sectional analytical study among GPs recruited by simple random sampling from the list of GPs in the city of Brazzaville. The judgement criteria were knowledge and practice of screening for viral hepatitis B and C, assessed according to a Likert scale divided into 3 categories: very good, good and bad. One hundred and twenty-one general practitioners were included, including 48 women and 73 men, with a sex ratio of 1.52;the average age was 33 years;52.89% of them worked in the private sector with an average period of activity of 4 years. The majority of the doctors had a good knowledge (69.42%) and a bad practice (56.20%) of screening for viral hepatitis B and C. The duration of activity was the factor linked to knowledge of viral hepatitis B and C (p = 0.006) while age was the factor linked to the practice of screening for viral hepatitis B and C (p = 0.0366). In conclusion, in Brazzaville, general practitioners’ knowledge of screening for viral hepatitis B and C is good in general, but the practices are poor and require targeted in-service training.

Plummer-Vinson syndrome (PVS) is a rare condition characterized by classical triad;high dysphagia, iron-def.ciency anemia and oesophageal ring f.rmation. We report a case of.PVS in a 62-year-old patient admitted to the department of.gastroenterology and internal medicine f.r high dysphagia. The clinical examination showed anemic syndrome, general impairment and polyarthritis. Biological examinations concluded to iron def.ciency anemia. The endoscopy had observed a circular ring immediately above Killian’s mouth ruptured during the examination. The patient was treated with iron and proton pump inhibitors. The oesophageal symptomatology regressed completely f.om the second day of.treatment.

Knowledge, Attitudes and Perceptions of.Colorectal Cancer Screening in Brazzaville

Objective: assess the knowledge, attitudes, and perceptions of.Brazzaville residents on colorectal cancer and its screening. Population and Methods: a CAP-type cross-sectional study was conducted f.om June 1 to October 31, 2022, with 803 workers approached at their place of.service. Inf.rmation was collected using a questionnaire administered to participants. The variables studied concerned knowledge, attitudes, and perceptions about colorectal cancer. SPSS sof.ware, along with Chi-square and f.sher tests, was used f.r data entry and analysis. Odds ratios were calculated to determine the strength of.the association between variables. Results: The average age of.the participants was 33.5 ± 10 years, with a sex ratio of.0.9. There were 231 health workers. The main sources of.inf.rmation were health personnel (78.2%) and the internet (52.6%). The site of.the pathology was known to 87% of.participants. About 40% identif.ed age, genetic predispositions, and a diet rich in animal f.ts as risk f.ctors. No signs of.the disease were known by 50% of.the participants. Colonoscopy was known as a screening method by 40% of.participants. Seventy-f.ve percent were willing to participate in a CRC awareness campaign, but only 5% agreed to a screening colonoscopy, although 96% recognized its usef.lness. Overall, the level of.knowledge was insuf.icient in 70.4% of.cases;attitudes were adapted in 55.7% of.cases, and perceptions were adapted in 97.3% of.cases. f.ctors inf.uencing knowledge included young age (p = 0.006), a good level of.education, being a healthcare worker, and high socio-economic level. Conclusion: colorectal cancer and its screening are poorly understood by the population. Awareness activities must be organized to improve knowledge and promote screening and early diagnosis of.CRC.

Introduction: pancreatic cancer a poor prognosis disease for which there is no screening. Its association with diabetes is not uncommon and may influence the evolutionary profile. The aim of this study was to describe the profile of diabetic patients who could benefit from pancreatic cancer screening. Methods: we conducted a retrospective cross-sectional study in the gastroenterology department of the University Hospital of Brazzaville, from January 2010 to December 2019. Epidemiological variables (age, sex, alcoholism, smoking), tumor variables (symptoms, site, size, density, extension) and time of occurrence of both entities were analyzed using Epi info software. Results: A total of 35 patients were hospitalized for pancreatic cancer, of whom 17 were men and 15 women, for a sex ratio of 1.21. The mean age of the patients was 60.3 ± 13 years. Fifteen patients (43.75%) were diabetic, all classified as type 2. Among them, the diagnosis of diabetes of 10 patients (66.7%) preceded pancreatic cancer diagnosis and delay between the two pathologies was on average 3.4 years ± 5.3 months. Diabetes was observed in 11 patients older than 60 years. The difference was significant (OR = 4.8;95% CI [1.1 - 22.8];p = 0.0226). The other epidemiological variables studied were not related to the two pathologies.
