A novel unsupervised deep learning method for the generalization of urban form

Accurate delineation of urban form is essential to understand the impacts that urbanization has on the environment and regional climate.Conventional supervised classification of urban form requires a rigidly defined scheme and high-quality sample data with class labels.Due to the complexity of urban systems,it is challenging to consistently define urban form types and collect metadata to describe them.Therefore,in this study,we propose a novel unsupervised deep learning method for urban form delineation while avoiding the limitations of conventional super-vised urban form classification methods.The novelty of the proposed method is the Multiscale Residual Convolutional Autoencoder(MRCAE),which can learn the latent representation of differ-ent urban form types.These vectors can be further used to generalize urban form types by using Self-Organizing Map(SOM)and the Gaussian Mixture Model(GMM).The proposed method is applied in the metropolitan area of Guangzhou-Foshan,China.The MRCAE model along with SOM and GMM is used to generalize the urban form types from satellite images.The physical and functional properties of each urban form type are also analyzed using several auxiliary datasets,including building footprints,Points-of-Interests(POIs)and Tencent User Density(TUD)data.The results reveal that the urban form map generated based on the MRCAE can explain 55%of the building height distribution and 55%of the building area distribution,which are 2.1%and 3.3%higher than those derived from the conventional convolutional autoencoder.As the information of urban form is essential to urban climate models,the results presented in this study can become a basis to refine the quantification of urban climate parameters,thereby introducing the urban heterogeneity to help understand the climate response of future urbanization.

Improving the resilience of maritime supply chains: The integration of ports and inland transporters in duopoly markets

The adverse impact of the outbreak of COVID-19 has reduced ports’ operational efficiency. In addition, ports and inland logistics providers are generally independent of each other and difficult to work together, which leads to time loss. Thus, as the core player, ports can integrate with inland logistics providers to improve the efficiency and resilience of maritime supply chains. This study examines the strategic options of two competing maritime supply chains consisting of ports and inland logistics providers. We investigate the impact of cooperation between ports and inland logistics providers and government regulation on the maritime supply chain by comparing members’ optimal pricing and overall social welfare under centralized, decentralized, and hybrid scenarios. Results indicate that the hybrid scenario is an equilibrium strategy for maritime supply chain, although this strategy is not optimal for governments seeking to improve supply chain resilience and maximize social welfare. Furthermore, observations show that through government economic intervention, both seaborne supplies can be incentivized to adopt an integrated strategy, and business and society can achieve a win–win situation.

Containerized shipping is a growing market for agricultural exports,particularly soybeans.In order to understand the optimal strategies for improving the United States’economic competitiveness in this emerging market,this research develops an intermodal transportation network modeling framework,focusing on U.S.soybean container shipments.Built upon detailed modal cost analyses,a Geospatial Intermodal Freight Transportation(GIFT)model has been developed to understand the optimal network design for U.S.soybean exports.Based on market demand and domestic supply figures,the model is able to determine which domestically produced soybeans should go to which foreign markets,and by which transport modes.This research and its continual studies,will provide insights into future policies and practices that can improve the transportation efficiency of soybean logistics.

Shape preserving topology optimization for structural radar cross section control

The purpose of this paper is to present a shape preserving topology optimization method to prevent the adverse effects of the mechanical deformation on the Radar Cross Section(RCS).The optimization will suppress the variation of RCS on the perfect conductor surface by structural design.On the one hand,the physical optics method is utilized to calculate the structural RCS,which is based on the surface displacement field obtained from the finite element analysis of the structure.The corresponding design sensitivities of topology optimization are derived analytically and solved by the adjoint method.On the other hand,the RCS variation and mechanical performance are taken into account simultaneously by extending a standard compliance-based topology optimization model.Two optimization formulations are discussed in an illustrative example,where the influences of upper limits of the compliance and the RCS variation are considered.Two more examples are further tested to show the ability and validity of the proposed optimization method.

Robust autonomous landing of UAVs in non-cooperative environments based on comprehensive terrain understanding

Autonomous landing in non-cooperative environments is a key step toward full autonomy of unmanned aerial vehicles(UAVs). Existing studies have addressed this problem by finding a flat area of the ground as the landing place. However, all these methods have poor generalization ability and ignore the semantic feature of the terrain. In this paper, we propose a well-designed binocular-LiDAR sensor system and a robust terrain understanding model to overcome these deficiencies. Our model infers both morphologic and semantic features of the ground by simultaneously performing depth completion and semantic segmentation. Moreover, during the inference phase, it self-evaluates the accuracy of the predicted depth map and dynamically selects the LiDAR accumulation time to ensure accurate depth prediction, which greatly improves the robustness of the UAV in completely unknown environments. Through extensive experiments on our collected low-altitude aerial image dataset and real UAVs, we verified that our model effectively learned two tasks simultaneously and achieved better performance than existing depth estimation-based landing methods. Furthermore, the UAV can robustly select a safe landing site in several complex environments with about 98% accuracy.

Harmonic reducer in-situ fault diagnosis for industrial robots based on deep learning

The harmonic reducer is an essential kinetic transmission component in the industrial robots.It is easy to be fatigued and resulted in physical malfunction after a long period of operation.Therefore,an accurate in-situ fault diagnosis for the harmonic reducers in an industrial robot is especially important.This paper proposes a fault diagnosis method based on deep learning for the harmonic reducer of industrial robots via consecutive time-domain vibration signals.Considering the sampling signals from industrial robots are long,narrow,and channel-independent,this method combined a 1-dimensional convolutional neural network with matrix kernels(1-D MCNN)adaptive model.By adjusting the size of the convolution kernels,it can concentrate on the contextual feature extraction of consecutive time-domain data while retaining the ability to process the multi-channel fusion data.The proposed method is examined on a physical industrial robot platform,which has achieved a prediction accuracy of99%.Its performance is appeared to be superior in comparison to the traditional 2-dimensional CNN,deep sparse automatic encoding network(DSAE),multilayer perceptual network(MLP),and support vector machine(SVM).

Research on Normal Pythagorean Neutrosophic Set Choquet Integral Operator and Its Application

We first propose the normal Pythagorean neutrosophic set(NPNS)in this paper,which synthesizes the distribution of the incompleteness,indeterminacy,and inconsistency of the Pythagorean neutrosophic set(PNS)and normal fuzzy number.We also define some properties of NPNS.For solving the decision-making problem of the nonstrictly independent and interacting attributes,two kinds of NPNS Choquet integral operators are proposed.First,the NPNS Choquet integral average(NPNSCIA)operator and the NPNS Choquet integral geometric(NPNSCIG)operator are proposed.Then,their calculating formulas are derived,their properties are discussed,and an approach for solving the interacting multi-attribute decision making based on the NPNS is studied.Finally,the two kinds of operators are applied to validate the stability of the new method.

La ions-enhanced NH_(3)-SCR performance over Cu-SSZ-13 catalysts

Lanthanum(La)ions are generally recognized to cause a decline of the catalytic performance for Cu-SSZ-13 zeolite in the selective catalytic reduction of NO_(x)with NH_(3)(NH_(3)-SCR).Herein,we demonstrate that the NH_(3)-SCR performance and hydrothermal stability of Cu-La-SSZ-13 zeolites can be enhanced with the incorporation of a small amount of La ions.The incorporation of La ions into SSZ-13 favors more Z_(2)Cu^(2+)ions at six-membered rings(6MRs),which results in higher hydrothermal stability of Cu-La-SSZ-13 than that of Cu-SSZ-13.The NO conversion of Cu-La-SSZ-13 achieves 5%–10%higher than that of Cu-SSZ-13 at the temperature range of 400–550℃ after hydrothermal ageing.While introducing excess amount of La ions in SSZ-13 may cause the formation of inactive CuO_(x),leading to the decrease of catalytic activity and hydrothermal stability.Notably,the low-temperature activity of Cu-SSZ-13 with a low Cu content(≤2 wt.%)can be boosted by the introduction of La ions,which is largely due to the improved redox ability of Cu active sites modified by La ions.Density functional theory(DFT)calculations indicate that La ions prefer to locate at eight-membered rings(8MRs)and thus promoting the formation of more Z_(2)Cu^(2+)ions.Meanwhile,the existence of La ions in SSZ-13 inhibits the dealumination process and the transformation from Z_(2)Cu^(2+)to CuO_(x),resulting in its enhanced hydrothermal stability.The present work sheds a new insight into the regulation of secondary metal cations for promoting high NH_(3)-SCR performance over Cu-SSZ-13 zeolite catalysts.
