Paper was one of the greatest inventions in ancient China,and it greatly promoted the rapid development of human civilization.Even in today's electronic information age,paper and paper-derived products are still indispensable to people's daily work and life.However;the traditional paper based on cellulose fibers from plants has some problems.For instance:(1)papermaking consumes a large amount of precious natural resources such as trees;(2)the papermaking industry causes environmental pollution;(3)the traditional paper consisting of organic cellulose fibers is highly flammable and easy to burn;(4)the traditional paper based on cellulose fibers turns to yellow color with time;(5)the lifetime of the traditional paper is relatively short because of the degradation of cellulose fibers.More efforts are needed to investigate and solve these problems facing the traditional paper.In recent years,a new kind of multifunctional fire-resistant paper based on ultralong hydroxyapatite nanowires has been developed and investigated for various applications,and many research findings have been documented in the literature.This review article provides a comprehensive summary and discussion on recent research advances for this new kind of multifunctional fire-resistant paper based on ultralong hydroxyapatite nanowires,including the synthesis,properties,applications,and future perspectives.

Krüppel-like factor 10 (KLF10), also known as TGFβ-inducible early gene-1 (TIEG1), was first found in human osteoblasts. Early studies show that KLF10 plays an important role in osteogenic differentiation. Through decades of research, KLF10 has been found to have complex functions in many different cell types, and its expression and function is regulated in multiple ways. As a downstream factor of transforming growth factor β (TGFβ)/SMAD signaling, KLF10 is involved in various biological functions, including glucose and lipid metabolism in liver and adipose tissue, the maintenance of mitochondrial structure and function of the skeletal muscle, cell proliferation and apoptosis, and plays roles in multiple disease processes, such as nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) and tumor. Besides, KLF10 shows gender-dependent difference of regulation and function in many aspects. In this review, the biological functions of KLF10 and its roles in disease states is updated and discussed, which would provide new insights into the functional roles of KLF10 and a clearer view of potential therapeutic strategies by targeting KLF10.

Higd1a is a conserved gene in evolution which is widely expressed in many tissues in mammals.Accumulating evidence has revealed multiple functions of Higd1a,as a mitochon-drial inner membrane protein,in the regulation of metabolic homeostasis.It plays an impor-tant role in anti-apoptosis and promotes cellular survival in several cell types under hypoxic condition.And the survival of porcine Sertoli cells facilitated by Higd1a helps to support repro-duction.In some cases,Higd1a can serve as a sign of metabolic stress.Over the past several years,a considerable amount of studies about how tumor fate is determined and how cancerous proliferation is regulated by Higd1a have been performed.In this review,we summarize the physiological functions of Higd1a in metabolic homeostasis and its pathophysiological roles in distinct diseases including cancer,nonalcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD),type Il diabetes and mitochondrial diseases.The prospect of Higd1a with potential to preserve mammal health is also discussed.This review might pave the way for Higd1a-based research andapplicationinclinicalpractice.

As the main inorganic component of human bones and teeth,hydroxyapatite(HAP)materials have been widely investigated for various applications especially in the biomedical field.Recently,HAP nanowires(HAP NWs)have attracted research interest in the energy and environment-related fields owing to their advantages such as excellent biocompatibility and bioactivity,high-thermal stability,surface modification and functionalization,and selfassembly to form nanoscale porous networked structure.In this review,we first briefly discuss the synthesis of HAP NWs.Then we focus on summarizing the foremost advances in energy and environment-related applications of HAP NWs,including the battery,solar energy-assisted water evaporation,light-driven self-propelled device,thermal insulation,fireresistant inorganic paper,water purification,air purification,molecular detection,superhydrophobic surface,and high-strength nanocomposite materials.In addition,the future research directions on HAP NWs and their energy and environmental applications are proposed.This review aims to provide inspiration and stimulate extensive future studies in the energy and environmental applications of HAP NWs and other inorganic NWs.

Calcium phosphates are a family of compounds with different chemical compositions, structures and properties containing calcium ions and functional groups of orthophosphate （ pO34- ）, metaphosphate （ PO3- ） or pyrophosphate （ P2O4-7 ） and sometimes hydrogen or hydroxide ions. Calcium phosphates can be widely found in nature as well as in hard tissues （bone and tooth） of the vertebrate. Owing to similar chemical composition and structure to the main inorganic constituents of bone and tooth, calcium phosphate-based materials are promising biomaterials with high biocompatibility, and have been investigated for applications in various biomedical areas. Calcium silicate-based materials have attracted much attention on their potential applications in various biomedical fields such as bone de- fect repair and drug delivery. In recent years, this research group has been focusing on the research in this exciting and rapidly evolving research field, and has published many papers. This article will provide a brief review on our main research work on the synthesis, characterization, properties and applications of nanostructured materials of calcium phosphates and calcium silicates. Finally, future perspectives and challenges for the research and applica- tions of nanostructured materials of calcium phosphates and calcium silicates are discussed.

Future changes in tropical cyclone(TC)activity over the western North Pacific(WNP)under the representative concentration pathway RCP4.5 are investigated based on a set of 21 st century climate change simulations over East Asia with the regional climate model RegCM4 driven by five global models.The RegCM4 reproduces the major features of the observed TC activity over the region in the present-day period of 1986-2005,although with the underestimation of the number of TC genesis and intensity.A low number of TCs making landfall over China is also simulated.By the end of the 21st century(2079-98),the annual mean frequency of TC genesis and occurrence is projected to increase over the WNP by16%and 10%,respectively.The increase in frequency of TC occurrence is in good agreement among the simulations,with the largest increase over the ocean surrounding Taiwan Island and to the south of Japan.The TCs tend to be stronger in the future compared to the present-day period of 1986-2005,with a large increase in the frequency of strong TCs.In addition,more TCs landings are projected over most of the China coast,with an increase of~18%over the whole Chinese territory.

Magnetization associated with reversible phase transformation or rearrangement of martensite variants of two kinds of shape memory alloys under the coupling of tensile stress were investigated.One is the austenitic Ni_(46)Mn_(28)Ga_(20)Co_(3)Cu_(3)micro wire with the [001] preferred orientation,which exhibits enhanced cyclic stability and large fully recoverable strain(> 8%) due to the stress-induced reversible martensitic transformation at room temperature.The other is the Ni_(54)Mn_(24)Ga_(22)microwire with ferromagnetic martensitic phase,which has preferential orientation and also exhibits large tensile strain.Based on the improved mechanical properties,the strain-magnetization effect of the two kinds of microwire under the coupling of orthogonal magnetic field and tensile stress was performed and the results indicate that the magnetization decreases with the increase of tensile strains.Furthermore,the magnetization mechanism related to the magnetostructural evolution under stress-magnetic coupling was discussed.This study provides a new way for smart magnetic microwires for novel non-contact and non-destructive detection.

Effect of polytetrafluoroethylene hollow fiber microstructure on formaldehyde carbonylation performance in membrane contactor

Membrane contactor is regarded as a promising method for reaction and process intensification. The feasibility of formaldehyde carbonylation to synthesize glycolic acid using polytetrafluoroethylene(PTFE)membrane contactor has been proved in our previous study. In this paper, the effect of membrane microstructure on process performance was further investigated. Three porous PTFE hollow fibers with different pore sizes and one polydimethylsiloxane(PDMS)/PTFE composite membrane with dense layer were fabricated for comparison. The physical and chemical properties of four membranes, including chemical composition, morphology, contact angle, liquid entry pressure, thermodynamic analysis and gas permeability, were systemically characterized. Experiments of formaldehyde carbonylation under different reaction conditions were conducted. The results indicated that the yield of glycolic acid increased with decreasing pore size for porous membranes, which was due to the improvement of wetting behavior. The dense layer of PDMS in composite hollow fiber could effectively prevent the solvent from entering membrane pores, thus the membrane exhibited the best performance. At reaction temperature of 120℃ and operation pressure of 3.0 MPa, the yield of glycolic acid was always higher than 90% as the mass ratio of trioxane and phosphotungstic acid increased from 0.2:1 to 0.8:1. The highest turnover frequency was up to 26.37 mol·g^(-1)·h^(-1). This study provided a reference for the understanding and optimization of membrane contactors for the synthesis of glycolic acid using solvent with low surface tension.

Objective: Coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19) has raised concern around the world as an epidemic or pandemic. As data on COVID-19 has grown, it has become clear that older adults have a disproportionately high rate of death from COVID-19. This study describes the early clinical characteristics of COVID-19 in patients with more than 80 years of age.Methods: Epidemiological, clinical, laboratory, radiological, and treatment data from 17 patients diagnosed with COVID-19 between January 20 and February 20, 2020 were collected and analyzed retrospectively. Treatment outcomes among subgroups of patients with non-severe and severe symptoms of COVID-19 were compared.Results: Of the 17 hospitalized patients with COVID-19, the median age was 88.0 years(interquartile range, 86.6–90.0 years;range, 80.0–100.0 years) and 12(70.6%) were men. The age distribution of patients was not significantly different between non-severe group and severe group. All patients had chronic pre-existing conditions. Hypertension and cardiovascular diseases were the most common chronic conditions in both subgroups. The most common symptoms at the onset of COVID-19 were fever(n = 13;76.5%), fatigue(n = 11;64.7%), and cough(n = 5;29.4%). Lymphopenia was observed in all patients, and lymphopenia was significantly more severe in the severe group than that in non-severe group(0.4×10~9/L vs 1.2×10~9/L, P = 0.014). The level of serum creatinine was higher in the severe group than in the non-severe group(99.0 lmol/L vs 62.5 lmol/L, P = 0.038). The most common features of chest computed tomography images were nodular foci in 10(58.8%) patients and pleural thickening in 7(41.2%) patients. All patients received antiviral therapy, while some patients also received intravenous antibiotics therapy(76.5%), Chinese medicinal preparation therapy(Lianhuaqingwen capsule, 64.7%), corticosteroids(35.3%) or immunoglobin(29.4%).
