The Persistence and Zonal Scale of Atmospheric Dipolar Modes

This study investigates the relationship between the persistence and the zonal scale of atmospheric dipolar modes(DMs). Results from the daily data of ERA5 and the long-term output of an idealized atmospheric model show that the atmospheric DMs with a broader(narrower) zonal scale dipolar structure possess a longer(shorter) persistence. A detailed vorticity budget analysis indicates that the persistence of a hemispheric-scale DM(1/1 DM) and a regional or sectoral DM(1/8 DM) in the model both largely rely on the persistence of the nonlinear eddy forcing. Linear terms can indirectly reduce the persistence of the anomalous nonlinear eddy forcing in a 1/8 DM by modifying the baroclinicity via the arousal of anomalous vertical motions. Therefore, the atmospheric DMs with a broader(narrower) zonal scale possess a longer(shorter) persistence because the effects of the linear terms are less(more) pronounced when the atmospheric DMs have better(worse) zonal symmetry. Further analyses show that the positive eddy feedback effect is weak or even absent in a 1/8DM and the high-frequency eddy forcing acts more like a concomitant phenomenon rather than a leading driving factor for a 1/8 DM. Thus, the hemispheric-scale DM and the regional or sectoral DMs are different, not only in their persistence but also in their dynamics.

A unified stochastic damage model for concrete based on multi-scale energy dissipation analysis

This work proposes a unified damage model for concrete within the framework of stochastic damage mechanics. Based on the micro-meso stochastic fracture model(MMSF), the nonlinear energy dissipation process of the microspring from nanoscale to microscale is investigated. In nanoscale, the rate process theory is adopted to describe the crack growth rate;therefore, the corresponding energy dissipation caused by a representative crack propagation can be obtained. The scale gap from nanoscale to microscale is bridged by a crack hierarchy model. Thus, the total energy dissipated by all cracks from the nanoscale to the microscale is gained. It is found that the fracture strain of the microspring can be derived from the above multi-scale energy dissipation analysis. When energy dissipation is regarded as some microdamage to the microspring, the constitutive law of the microspring is no longer linearly elastic, as previously assumed. By changing the expression of the damage evolution law from fracture strain to energy dissipation threshold, the new damage evolution model is derived. The proposed model can not only replicate the original static model but also extend to cases of rate dependence. By deriving the fracture strain under different strain rates, the rate sensitivity of concrete materials can be reflected. The model parameters can be conveniently obtained by identifying them with experimental data. Finally, several numerical examples are presented to verify the proposed model.

Establishing a quantitative relationship between modern pollen and vegetation remains a pivotal but intricate pursuit within the field of Quaternary *** R-value,a well-established and traditional metric characterized by its simplicity and direct applicability,serves to calibrate the nonlinear disparities between surface pollen and modern *** study entails the construction of a comprehensive pollen R-value dataset for China derived from R-values published between 1987 and *** dataset,compiled after rigorous screening,calibration,and standardization processes,encompasses 898 modern pollen sampling sites and 2115 pollen R-value data entries,encapsulating 152 pollen taxa spanning 65 families and 113.*** the extracted R-values yielded the following insights:(1)A macrospatial analysis validates previously established knowledge at a site-specific ***,pollen R-value variations across China are statistically *** two-thirds of pollen taxa exhibit underrepresentation(e.g.,Taxodiaceae,Corylus,Nitraria,Tamarix,Cyperaceae,Poaceae,and Fabaceae),while the remaining one-third display overrepresentation(e.g.,Pinus,Picea,Betula,Ephedra,Chenopodiaceae,and Artemisia).The degree of underrepresentation surpasses that of overrepresentation,and the representation patterns of Castanea,Quercus,Polygonaceae,and Asteraceae are contingent upon vegetation types.(2)Pollen R-values follow distinct spatial distribution patterns within *** the woody vegetation region of eastern China,R-values progressively decline from north to south,correlating with rising temperatures and ***,in herbaceous vegetation regions of northern and western China,R-values decrease from east to west and from northeast to southwest,corresponding to increased ***,pollen R-values manifest variation contingent on pollen taxa,vegetation types,and climatic regions,even differing for the same taxa across varying

Wireless Sensor Network(WSN)is a cornerstone of Internet of Things(IoT)and has rich application *** this work,we consider a heterogeneous WSN whose sensor nodes have a diversity in their Residual Energy(RE).In this work,to protect the sensor nodes with low RE,we investigate dynamic working modes for sensor nodes which are determined by their RE and an introduced energy ***,we employ an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle(UAV)to collect the stored data from the heterogeneous *** aim to jointly optimize the cluster head selection,energy threshold and sensor nodes’working mode to minimize the weighted sum of energy con-sumption from the WSN and UAV,subject to the data collection rate *** this end,we propose an efficient search method to search for an optimal energy threshold,and develop a penalty-based successive convex approximation algorithm to select the cluster *** we present a low-complexity iterative approach to solve the joint optimization problem and discuss the implementation *** results justify that our proposed approach is able to reduce the energy consumption of the sensor nodes with low RE significantly and also saves energy for the whole WSN.
