Clinical efficacy of comprehensive therapy based on traditional Chinese medicine patterns on patients with pneumoconiosis: a pilot double-blind, randomized, and placebo-controlled study

Effective therapy options for pneumoconiosis are lacking.Traditional Chinese medicine(TCM)presents a favorable prospect in the treatment of pneumoconiosis.A pilot study on TCM syndrome differentiation can evaluate the clinical efficacy and safety of TCM and lay a foundation for further clinical research.A double-blind,randomized,and placebo-controlled trial was conducted for 24 weeks,in which 96 patients with pneumoconiosis were randomly divided into the control and treatment groups.Symptomatic treatment was conducted for the two groups.The treatment group was treated with TCM syndrome differentiation,and the control group was treated with placebo.The primary outcomes were the six-minute walking distance(6MWD)and the St.George Respiratory Questionnaire(SGRQ)score.The secondary outcomes were the modified British Medical Research Council Dyspnea Scale(mMRC),Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Assessment Test(CAT),Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale(HADS),and pulmonary function.Only 83 patients from the 96 patients with pneumoconiosis finished the study.For the primary outcome,compared with the control groups,the treatment group showed a significantly increased 6MWD(407.90 m vs.499.51 m;95%confidence interval(CI)47.25 to 135.97;Plity of life of patients with pneumoconiosis.

CONSPECTUS:Nanoporous carbon(NPC)materials with various architectures have attracted considerable attention because of their distinctive properties and great application potential in environmental remediation,energy conversion and storage,advanced sensors,and other applications.Traditional methods for the synthesis of NPCs,for example,the pyrolysis of natural products or polymers,template-assisted synthesis,and using deep-eutectic solvents,always involve toxic precursors and complex procedures,which greatly hinder further applications.Therefore,it is highly desirable to explore simple and feasible ways to prepare NPCs.Furthermore,to improve the performance and extend the application fields of NPCs,efficient strategies should be developed to regulate the components at the atomic level and construct multidimensional architectures.

Genetic architecture of embryo size and related traits in maize

The embryo in maize has a critical role in controlling kernel nutrition components and grain yield.We measured five embryo weight and size traits,six kernel weight and size traits,and five embryo-tokernel ratio traits in a nested association mapping(NAM)population of 611 recombinant inbred lines(RILs)derived from four inbred lines including the high-oil,giant-embryo line BY815 as the common parent.Using three statistical methods,we identified 5–22 quantitative trait loci(QTL)for each trait,explaining 4.7%–46.7%of the phenotypic variation.The genetic architecture of maize embryo size and its related traits appeared to be dominated by multiple small-effect loci with little epistasis,and the genetic control underlying embryo size appeared to be distinct from that underlying kernel size.A trait–QTL association network included 205 nodes and 439 edges and revealed 28 key loci associated with at least three traits.Cloned maize genes including Zm Urb2,Emp12 and Zm BAM1 d,maize orthologs of known rice genes that control seed size including BG1,XIAO and GS9,and 11 maize orthologs of Arabidopsis EMBRYO-DEFECTIVE(EMB)genes were identified as underlying these key loci.Further,the phenotypic and genetic relationships between embryo size and kernel size were evaluated,and genetic patterns for identified loci that control embryo size and its related traits were proposed.Our findings reveal distinct genetic architectures for embryo size,kernel size,and embryo-to-kernel ratio traits and establish a foundation for the improvement of embryo-size-mediated kernel nutrition and grain yield.

OBJECTIVE:To systematically evaluate the efficacy and safety of Chinese herbal medicine(CHM) combined with conventional Western Medicine(CWM) on acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease(AECOPD) based on high-quality randomized placebocontrolled trials.METHODS:We searched PubMed,Embase,Cochrane library,China National Knowledge Infrastructure Database,Chinese Biomedical literature Database,China Science and Technology Journal Database,and Wanfang databases for randomized placebo-controlled trials of CHM treatment for AECOPD from inception to June 4,2021.The Cochrane Collaboration’s tool and the Grading of Recommendations,Assessment,Development and Evaluation were used to assess the risk of bias and the evidence quality of the included studies.Revman 5.3 software was used for Meta-analysis.RESULTS:A total of 9 trials involving 1591 patients were included.The Meta-analysis showed that based on CWM treatment,CHM group had significant advantages over the placebo group in ameliorating clinical total effective rate [RR = 1.29,95% CI(1.07,1.56),P = 0.007,low quality] and TCM symptom scores [MD =-2.99,95% CI(-4.46,-1.53),P lity],improving arterial blood gas results [PaO_(2):MD = 4.51,95% CI(1.97,7.04),P = 0.0005,moderate quality;PaCO_(2):MD =-2.87,95% CI(-4.28,-1.46),P lity],reducing CAT scores [MD =-2.08,95% CI(-2.85,-1.31),P lity],length of hospitalization [MD =-1.87,95% CI(-3.33,-0.42),P = 0.01,moderate quality],and acute exacerbation rate [RR = 0.60,95% CI(0.43,0.83),P = 0.002,moderate quality].No serious CHM-related adverse events were reported.CONCLUSIONS:The current evidence indicates that CHM is an effective and well-tolerated adjunct therapy for AECOPD patients receiving CWM.However,considering the high heterogeneity,this conclusion requires confirmation.

The Karakoram highway(KKH)is renowned for its complex natural environment and geological conditions.The climate changes drastically and directly infuences the frequency and magnitude of debris fows in this region,resulting in signifcant casualties and economic losses.However,the risk assessment of debris fows along the KKH in the context of climate change has been rarely explored.Therefore,in this study we used the debris fow data,historical meteorological data and future climate prediction data to assess the debris fow risk of the study region during the baseline period(2009–2018),2025s(2021–2030),2035s(2031–2040)and 2045s(2041–2050)under the Representative Concentration Pathway 8.5 scenario.The results show that the risk of debris fows increases with climate change,with the highest risk level in the 2025s.Among diferent parts of this highway,the upper reaches of the Ghez River and the second half of Tashkorgan-Khunjerab are the sections with the highest risk.These fndings are helpful for debris fow prevention and can ofer coping strategies for the existing line of the KKH.They also provide some reference for the renovation,improvement,operation,and maintenance of the KKH.

Climate change and human activities have increased avalanche risks in alpine mountains.Therefore,strengthening the research on mitigating and controlling avalanche disasters is indispensable for sustainable socio-economic development in mountainous areas.Early avalanche warning is an essential means of avalanche disaster prevention.However,the theoretical development and application of avalanche warning strategies remain limited due to the lack of systematic understanding of the triggering mechanisms of avalanches.Based on observational data(2015–2019)of avalanches,snowpack,meteorological parameters,surface soil temperature and moisture,and topography in avalanche-prone areas in the central Tianshan Mountains,we analyzed the characteristics of different types of avalanches under a continental snow climate and the environmental factors(such as meteorological conditions and snowpack)that trigger avalanches,as well as the triggering mechanisms for different types of avalanches under the continental snow climate in terms of snow-layer shear fracture modes.We found that the snowpack parameters,weather conditions,and soil temperature and moisture varied significantly among the stages of snow accumulation,stabilization,and melting,resulting in different avalanches prevailing in different stages of snowpack evolution.Moreover,the snow-layer fractures were driven by single external factors or the combined multiple factors under the continental snow climate.Fifty-four percent of the avalanche events in the study area occurred during or after a snowfall,with 36%related to sudden increases in temperature.Then considering different triggering scenarios,snowpack evolution stages,and the coupling of intrinsic and extrinsic drivers of triggering snow-layer shear failure,we constructed five snow-layer shear fracture modes and twelve avalanche-triggering modes on mountain slopes under a continental snow climate.

The design of novel signal amplification elements was key to improving the sensing and analysis performance of electrochemical sensors. In this work, porous one-dimensional copper nitrogen-doped carbon nanofibers(CuNCNFs) were successfully prepared via the coupled process of electrospinning technology and high-temperature pyrolysis. This coupling of multiple processes and the introduction of heteroatoms pyrolyzed the HKUST-1 particles to generate three-dimensional Cu-doped carbon octahedra and mosaic them inside the one-dimensional carbon nitride channels, obtaining small-sized Cu particles while introducing a large number of N species, and constructing a three-dimensional MOFs-derived metal-carbon hybrid one-dimensional multistage carbon nitride structure. The resulting Cu-NCNFs sensor could simultaneously determine acetaminophen and sulfanilamide and exhibit superior electroanalytical performance, reproducibility, stability, and selectivity. This strategy provides a new approach to preparing novel signal amplification elements for the efficient monitoring of micropollutants.

Aggregating structure in coal water slurry studied by eDLVO theory and fractal dimension

Coal water slurry gasification is a main source of hydrogen in the developing hydrogen economy.Moreover,biomass and waste can be added,making gasification process greener.To expand the application of coal water slurry and gasification process,it is necessary to understand the micro-structure in this large particle suspension system.In this paper,the micro-structure in coal water slurry was studied by extended DLVO(eDLVO)theory and fractal dimension,which is used to explain the mechanism of stability in large particle suspension systems.The interaction between two coal particles was characterized from the interparticle potential and energy barrier based on the eDLVO theory.The rheology and stability between different types of coals are measured and explained by the aggregating structure and fractal dimension in coal water slurry.The results indicated that there would be an aggregating structure in high rank coals,due to the interparticle potential caused by the surface properties,but probably not in low rank coals.This aggregating structure can be described and characterized by fractal dimension.The aggregation of particles is the source of the stability for high rank coals,as the close-packed 3D network structure in large particle suspension can support coal particles from settling down.The results have demonstrated that the combination of the eDLVO theory and rheological measurement is an effective way to investigate the stability of large particle suspension systems.

In this work,coarse-grained 316 L stainless steels were cold rolled with a thickness reduction of^83%(CR 83%).After annealing,the behaviors of the nanostructured stainless steel samples were systematically investigated in the temperatures range of 200C–650C.It was found that with increasing annealing temperature the volume fraction of theα0-martensite first increased to reach a maximum value at 400C,then the volume fraction decreased with further increases of the annealing temperature.The yield strength was increased from 1400 MPa to 1720 MPa after annealing;this strong hardening effect in cold rolled 316 L stainless steel was mainly attributed to the increase of the volume fraction ofα0-martensite.
