Novel robust cellulose-based foam with pH and light dual-response for oil recovery

We fabricated pH and light dual-responsive adsorption materials which could induce the transition of surface wettability between hydrophobicity and hydrophilicity by using ATRPo The structure and morphology of adsorption materials were confirmed by ATR-FTIR, XPS, TGA and SEM. It showed that the modified cellulose （CE）- based foam was hydrophobic, which can adsorb a range of oils and organic solvents in water under pH = 7.0 or visible light irradiation （λ〉500 nm）. Meanwhile, the wettability of robust CE-based foam can convert hydrophobicity into hydrophilicity and underwater oleophobicity under pH = 3.0 or UV irradiation （λ = 365 nm）, giving rise to release oils and organic solvents. Most important of all, the adsorption and desorption processes of the modified CE-based foam could be switched by external stimuli. Furthermore, the modified CE-based foam was not damaged and still retained original performance after reversible cycle repeated for many times with variation of surface wettability. In short, it indicates that CE-based foam materials with switchable surface wettability are new responsive absorbent materials and have owned potential application in the treatment of oil recovery.

MECHANICAL DEFLECTION OF POLYSILICON MICROCANTILEVER BEAMS USING NANOINDENTATION

The validity of a novel, direct and convenient method for micromechanical property measurements by beam bending using a nanoindenter is demonstrated. This method combines a very high load resolution with a nanometric precision in the determination of the microcantilever beam deflection. The method is described clearly. In the deflection of microbeams, the influence of the indenter tip pushing into the top of the microbeams and the curvature across its width must be considered. The measurements were made on single-layer, micro-thick, several kinds of width and length polysilicon beams that were fabricated using conventional integrated circuit (IC) fabrication techniques. The elastic of a polysilicon microcantilever beam will vary linearly with the force and the deformation is thought to be elastic. Furthermore, it suggests that Young modulus of the beam can be determined from the slope of this linear relation. From the load deflection data acquired during bending the mechanical properties of the thin films were determined. Measured Young modulus is 137 GPa with approximately a ±2.9%～±6.3% difference in Young modulus.

MECHANICAL PROPERTIES AND ANTI-WEARABILITY STUDIES OF MULTILAYER THIN COATINGS ON CUTTING TOOLS

The naniondentation fracture of multilayer hard coatings, such as TiN, TiN/Ti(C, N)/TiC, TiN/Ti (C,N)/TiC/Ti (C, N)/TiC and TiN/Ti (C, N)/TiC/Ti (C,N)/TiC/Ti(C,N)/TiC coating, deposited on cemented carbide using a CVD technique are studied. It is found that these coatings have high hardness. Based on the analysis of the energy release in cracking, the fracture toughness of these coatings are calculated. The observations clearly establish a step occurs in the force-displacement curves at the onset of coating fracture and a straight line segment in the load-penetration depth squared curves to idenntify the interfacial failure of coatings. The hardness, fracture toughness and anti-wearability of these coatings are clearly compared. The results show that with the layers increasing, the fracture toughness and anti-wearbility are getting larger.

One-step synthesis and self-assembly behavior of thermo-responsive star-shaped β-cyclodextrin-（P（M EO2MA-co-PEGMA））21 copolymers

A novel β-cyclodextrin-poly（2-（2-methoxyethoxy）ethyl methacrylate）-co- poly（ethylene glycol） methacrylate （abbreviated as： β-CD-（P（MEO2MA-co-PEGMA））21） was prepared by using the one-step strategy, and then the star-shaped copolymers were used in the atom transfer radical polymerization （ATRP）. The structure of star-shaped β- CD-（P（MEO2MA-co-PEGMA））21 copolymers were studied by FTIR, 1H NMR and gel permeation chromatography （GPC）. The star-shaped copolymers could self-assembled into micelles in aqueous solution owing to the outer amphiphilic β-CD as a core and the hydrophilic P（MEO2MA-co-PEGMA） segments as a shell. These thermo-responsive starshaped copolymers micelles exhibited lower critical solution temperature （LCST） in water, which could be finely tuned by changing the feed ratio of MEO2MA to PEGMA. The LCST of star-shaped β-CD-（P（MEO2MA-co-PEGMA））21 copolymer micelles were increased from 35℃ to 58℃ with the increasing content of PEGMA. The results were investigated by DLS and TEM. When the temperature was higher than corresponding LCSTs, the micelles started to associate and form spherical nanoparticles. Therefore, β- CD-（P（MEO2MA-co-PEGMA））21 star-shaped copolymer micelles could be potentially applied in nano-carrier, nano-reactor, smart materials and biomedical fields.

Ion migration is a notorious problem in perovskite solar cells(PSCs)that severely mutilates device ***,a strategy to inhibit ion migration in situ is developed by using photoisomerization of azobenzene(AZO)to immobilize cations in the *** the nucleation process,the photoisomerized cis-AZO reacts with FA^(+),MA^(+)and Pb2+cations in the perovskite precursor by synergistic cation-πinteraction and Lewis base coordination,leading to heterogeneous nucleation to produce uniform perovskite ***,it accelerates conversion of intermediate yellowδ-phase to desired black aphase of FAPb I3for improved crystallinity with well-passivated grain ***,defect density is effectively reduced for the perovskite film to demonstrate suppressed carrier recombination and enhanced carrier ***,the solar cell efficiency is elevated from 21.29%to 23.58%with negligible J-V ***-term stability is also improved,with the bare device without any encapsulation retaining 84%of its initial efficiency after aging 744 hours in ambient.

Multi-functional stretchable and flexible sensor array to determine the location, shape, and pressure: Application in a smart robot

The rapid increase in the aging population prompts the development of wearable devices and sophisticated robots. With their ability to collect complex information about their surroundings via e-skins, robots could perform more dynamic and variable tasks such as rescue missions or caring for the elderly. In this paper, we present a new concept of utilizing a very simple, highly flexible and stretchable capacitor sensor array, that can be attached on the surface of a retractable robot hand to realize three functions: determining the location, shape, and pressure of an object. This adaptive sensing system is accomplished using capacitors connected by aligned carbon nanotube(CNT) films constructed on an elastomer dielectric material, which can reduce the requirement on the accuracy of the machine vision system. This study has a very broad application in the manufacture of intelligent software robots.

Covalently derivatized NTA microarrays on porous silicon for multi-mode detection of His-tagged proteins

Porous silicon(PSi)was applied as a supporting substrate for stepwise covalent derivatization of undecylenic acid, N-hydroxysuccinimidyl ester(NHS-ester)and nitrilotriacetic acid(NTA).By taking the advantages of porous silicon as a supporting matrix such as high surface area to volume ratio,infrared transparency,porous semiconductors for laser desorption/ionization mass spectroscopy,and low fluorescence background,a multi-mode detection biochip prototype can be realized. We prepared such a protein microarray by spotting NTA microarray dots on NHS-ester derivatized PSi,converting the rest of chip area into poly(ethylene glycol)background,loading NiII,and finally affinity-binding histidine-tagged(His-tagged)*** the multi-mode analyses of infrared spectroscopy,X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS),atomic force microscopy(AFM),matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectroscopy(MALDI-MS),and fluorescence scanning,two example proteins,His-tagged thioredoxin-urodilatin and His-tagged aprotinin,were well qualified and quantified.

Observation-based Estimation of Aerosol-induced Reduction of Planetary Boundary Layer Height

Radiative aerosols are known to influence the surface energy budget and hence the evolution of the planetary boundary layer. In this study, we develop a method to estimate the aerosol-induced reduction in the planetary boundary layer height （PBLH） based on two years of ground-based measurements at a site, the Station for Observing Regional Processes of the Earth System （SORPES）, at Nanjing University, China, and radiosonde data from the meteorological station of Nanjing. The observations show that increased aerosol loads lead to a mean decrease of 67.1 W m-2 for downward shortwave radiation （DSR） and a mean increase of 19.2 W m-2 for downward longwave radiation （DLR）, as well as a mean decrease of 9.6 W m-2 for the surface sensible heat flux （SHF） in the daytime. The relative variations of DSR, DLR and SHF are shown as a function of the increment of column mass concentration of particulate matter （PM2.5）. High aerosol loading can significantly increase the atmospheric stability in the planetary boundary layer during both daytime and nighttime. Based on the statistical relationship between SHF and PM2.5 column mass concentrations, the SHF under clean atmospheric conditions （same as the background days） is derived. In this case, the derived SHF, together with observed SHF, are then used to estimate changes in the PBLH related to aerosols. Our results suggest that the PBLH decreases more rapidly with increasing aerosol loading at high aerosol loading. When the daytime mean column mass concentration of PM2.5 reaches 200 mg m-2, the decrease in the PBLH at 1600 LST （local standard time） is about 450 m.

Photovoltaic molecules based on vinylene-bridged oligothiophene applied for bulk-heterojunction organic solar cells

We have synthesized two photovoltaic molecules（HEX-3TVT-ID and EH-3TVT-ID） based on vinylenebridged oligothiophene applied as donor for the solution-processable bulk-heterojunction organic solar cells（OSCs）. Vinylene unit was introduced as π-bridge in the oligothiophenes with 1,3-indenedione as end group and 4,4’-dihexyl-2,2’：5’,2’-terthiophene or 3’,4’-di（octan-3-yl）-2,2’：5’,2’-terthiophene as core,respectively. Due to the different substituent positions of the alkyl group relative to the vinylene unit in the terthiophene, HEX-3TVT-ID and EH-3TVT-ID show different optical and electrochemical properties, corresponding to the photovoltaic performance of the OSCs devices. The power conversion efficiency（PCE） of the OSCs based on a blend of HEX-3TVT-ID and PC71BM（1：0.8, weight ratio, 0.5% CN） reached 2.3%. In comparison, the OSCs based on the blend of EH-3TVT-ID and PC71BM in the weight ratio of 1：1 without the additive show a higher PCE of 2.7%, with a typically high VOC of 0.93 V, under the illumination of AM 1.5, 100 mW cm-2.

Study on the design of anti-sticking structures in MEMS under different forces

Mechanical stability and sticking are the troublesome problems in microfabrication andoperation processes when separations of components in MEMS are in the sub-micrometer *** mechanical effects including quantum mechanical effect should be taken into account forsolving the problems. The influence of capillary forces on sticking of a surface micromachined mi-crocantilever in ambient environment or the rinse liquid and the influence of quantum mechanicaleffect such as the Casimir effect on sticking and stability of a micro membrane strip cavity structurein vacuum were investigated. A factual rough model theory about sticking problem under theCasimir effect was suggested for the first time. The study on the design of anti-sticking structuresunder different forces shows that sticking and stability of microcantilevers and micro membranestrip cavities has something to do with Young’s modulus of materials, surface properties, length ofstructures, thickness of structures and separation between the fixed surface and the deflectingcomponent. But, it is independent of width of structures. The map of the size design of anti-stickingstructures was put forward for the first time. This also provides a way to design a MEMS structurewith high resistance to collapse.
