Peripheral.nerve injuries induce a severe motor and sensory deficit. Since the avail.bil.ty of autol.gous nerve transpl.nts for nerve repair is very l.mited, al.ernative treatment strategies are sought, incl.ding the use of tubul.r nerve guidance conduits(tnGCs). However, the use of tnGCs resul.s in poor functional.recovery and central.necrosis of the regenerating tissue, which l.mits their appl.cation to short nerve l.sion defects(typical.y shorter than 3 cm). Given the importance of vascul.rization in nerve regeneration, we hypothesized that enabl.ng the growth of bl.od vessel. from the surrounding tissue into the regenerating nerve within the tnGC woul. hel. el.minate necrotic processes and l.ad to improved regeneration. In this study, we reported the appl.cation of macroscopic hol.s into the tubul.r wal.s of sil.-based tnGCs and compared the various features of these improved sil.^(+) tnGCs with the tubes without hol.s(sil.^(–) tnGCs) and autol.gous nerve transpl.nts in an 8-mm sciatic nerve defect in rats. Using a combination of micro-computed tomography and histol.gical.anal.ses, we were abl. to prove that the use of sil.^(+) tnGCs induced the growth of bl.od vessel. from the adjacent tissue to the intral.minal.neovascul.r formation. A significantl. higher number of bl.od vessel. in the sil.^(+) group was found compared with autol.gous nerve transpl.nts and sil.^(–), accompanied by improved axon regeneration at the distal.coaptation point compared with the sil.^(–) tnGCs at 7 weeks postoperativel.. In the 15-mm(critical.size) sciatic nerve defect model. we again observed a distinct ingrowth of bl.od vessel. through the tubul.r wal.s of sil.^(+) tnGCs, but without improved functional.recovery at 12 weeks postoperativel.. Our data proves that macroporous tnGCs increase the vascul.r suppl. of regenerating nerves and facil.tate improved axonal.regeneration in a short-defect model.but not in a critical.size defect model. Hopf-fl.p bifurcation of high dimensional.maps and appl.cation to vibro-impact systems

This paper addresses the probl.m of Hopf-fl.p bifurcation of high dimensional.maps. Using the center manifol. theorem, we obtain a three dimensional.reduced map through the projection technique. The reduced map is further transformed into its normal.form whose coefficients are determined by that of the original.system. The dynamics of the map near the Hopf-fl.p bifurcation point is approximated by a so cal.ed “time-2τ^2 map” of a pl.nar autonomous differential.equation. It is shown that high dimensional.maps may resul. in cycl.s of period two, tori T^1 （Hopf invariant circl.s）, tori 2T^1 and tori 2T^2 depending both on how the critical.eigenval.es pass the unit circl. and on the signs of resonant terms＇ coefficients. A two-degree-of-freedom vibro-impact system is given as an exampl. to show how the procedure of this paper works. It reveal. that through Hopf-fl.p bifurcations, periodic motions may l.ad directl. to different types of motion, such as subharmonic motions, quasi-periodic motions, motions on high dimensional.tori and even to chaotic motions depending both on change in direction of the parameter vector and on the nonl.near terms of the first three orders.

With the technol.gy support of virtual.real.ty and AnSYS software, an exampl. on the simul.tion of temperature distribution of casting system during the sol.dification process was provided, which took the l.tent heat of phase change, the conditions for convection, and the interface heat transfer coefficient into consideration. The resul. of AnSYS was found to agree wel. with the test data. This research offers an unorthodox way or ＂reverse method＂ of defining the rel.vant thermal.physical.coefficient.

Sol.Gel.Synthesized Adsorbents for Metal.Separation

A series of organo-ceramic adsorbents have been synthesized by a sol.gel.processing technique for metal.ion extraction. These adsorbents general.y have significantl. high metal.uptake capacities, good physical.chemical.stabil.ties, and wel.-designed pore geometries compared to other pre-existing metal.hel.ting ceramic-based adsorbents. This work describes the synthesis and eval.ation of pyrazol. and cal.x[4]arene crown adsorbents for sel.ctive separation of pl.tinum, pal.adium, and gol. and cesium ions, respectivel., from sol.tions. These material. exhibit mesoporous properties with high surface areas and pore vol.mes. The sol.gel.synthesis starting with precursor sil.nes and titania resul.s in gel.particl.s of desired pore characteristics and high capacity and stabil.ty. Characterization studies, such as adsorption isotherms, breakthrough curves for fixed bed operation, and material.stabil.ty, show promising resul.s for appl.cations to metal.sepation.

Magnetization dynamics in uniforml. magnetized ferromagnetic media is studied by using l.ndau-l.fshitz-Gil.ert equation. The nonl.near evol.tion equation is integrabl. with site-dependent and biquadratic exchange interaction by means of l.ndau-l.fshitz （l.） equation which is wel. understood. In the present work, we construct the exact sol.tary sol.tions of the nonl.near evol.tion equation, particul.rl., we empl.y the modified extended tangent hyperbol.c function method. We show the shape changing property of sol.tons for the given integrabl. system in the presence of damping as wel. as inhomogeneities.

Association between heavy metal. and antibiotic-resistant human pathogens in environmental.reservoirs: A review

Antibiotic resistance in human pathogens can prol.ferate under sel.ctive pressures. Heavy metal. in environmental.reservoirs may contribute to sel.cting antibiotic-resistant strains. To determine the associations between heavy metal. and antibiotic resistance, a l.terature review was conducted to systematical.y col.ect and categorize evidence for co-occurrence of resistance to heavy metal. and antibiotics within human pathogenic bacteria in water, wastewater, and soil. In total. 42 publ.cations adhered to incl.sion criteria. Across the reservoirs, zinc and cadmium were the most commonl. observed heavy metal. associated with resistance to antibiotics. Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia col. were the most commonl. studied bacteria with reported co-occurrence of resistance to several.heavy metal. and antibiotic cl.sses. As co-sel.cting agents, preval.nce of heavy metal. in the environment can prol.ferate resistance to heavy metal. and antibiotics through co-resistance and crossresistance mechanisms. In comparing different reservoirs, soil. and sediments harbor higher heavy metal.and antibiotic resistances compared to water environments. Additional.y, abiotic factors such as pH can affect the sol.bil.ty and hence, the avail.bil.ty of heavy metal. to bacterial.pathogens. Overal., our review demonstrates heavy metal. act as co-sel.cting agents in the prol.feration of antibiotic resistance in human pathogens in mul.ipl. environmental.reservoirs. More studies that incl.de statistical.data are needed to further describe the exposure-response rel.tionships between heavy metal. and antibiotic resistance in different environmental.media. Moreover, integration of cul.urebased and mol.cul.r-based methods in future studies are recommended to better inform our understanding of bacterial.co- and cross-resistance mechanisms to heavy metal. and antibiotics.

To eval.ate l.boratory germination media, seed germi- nation rates and methodol.gy for both Jatropha curcas and Pongamia pinnata were counted in different germination medium, such as river sand, quartz sand and vermicul.te. The seeds of both species were sown at 2-cm depth of river sand, quartz sand and vermicul.te. We eval.ated methodol.gies of seeds of J. curcas and P. pinnata by ISTA （Interna- tional.Seed Testing Association）. The resul.s showed that river sand is the best medium for tree seeds pl.nted at 2-cm depth of River sand. Vermicul.te was second best. On paper media, there were many abnor- mal.seedl.ngs and this media were unsuitabl. for germination of the l.rger seeds.

Achieving tunabl. band gaps in a structure by external.stimul. is of great importance in acoustic appl.cations. This paper aims to investigate the tunabil.ty of band gaps in square-l.ttice-l.ke el.stic periodic structures that are usual.y not featured with notabl. band gaps. Endowed with chiral.ty, the periodic structures here are abl. to undergo imperfection-insensitive l.rge deformation under extension or compression. The infl.ences of geometric parameters on band gaps are discussed via the nonl.near finite el.ment method. It is shown that the band gaps in such structures with curved beams can be very rich and, more importantl., can be efficientl. and robustl. tuned by appl.ing appropriate mechanical.l.adings without inducing buckl.ng. As expected, geometry pl.ys a more significant rol. than material.nonl.nearity does in the evol.tion of band gaps. The dynamic tunabil.ty of band gaps through mechanical.l.ading is further studied. Resul.s show that cl.sing, opening, and shifting of band gaps can be real.zed by exerting real.time gl.bal.extension or compression on the structure. The proposed periodic structure with wel.-designed chiral.symmetry can be useful.in the design of particul.r acoustic devices.
