China's pre-2020 CO2 emission reduction potential and its influence

China achieved the reduction of CO2 intensity of GDP by 45% compared with 2005 at the end of 2017, realizing the commitment at 2009 Copenhagen Conference on emissions reduction 3 years ahead of time. In future implementation of the "13th Five-Year Plan (FYP)," with the decline of economic growth rate, decrease of energy consumption elasticity and optimization of energy structure, the CO2 intensity of GDP will still have the potential for decreasing before 2020. By applying KAYA Formula decomposition, this paper makes the historical statistics of the GDP energy intensity decrease and CO2 intensity of energy consumption since 2005, and simulates the decrease of CO2 intensity of GDP in 2020 and its influences on achieving National Determined Contribution (NDC) target in 2030 with scenario analysis. The results show that China's CO2 intensity of GDP in 2020 is expected to fall by 52.9%-54.4% than the 2005 level, and will be 22.9%-25.4% lower than 2015. Therefore, it is likely to overfulfill the decrease of CO2 intensity of GDP by 18% proposed in the 13th FYP period. Furthermore, the emission reduction potentiality before 2020 will be conducive to the earlier realization of NDC objectives in 2030. China's CO2 intensity of GDP in 2030 will fall by over 70% than that in 2005, and CO2 emissions peak will appear before 2030 as early as possible. To accelerate the transition to a low-carbon economy, China needs to make better use of the carbon market, and guide the whole society with carbon price to reduce emissions effectively. At the same time, China should also study the synergy of policy package so as to achieve the target of emission reduction.

Graph neural network based method for robot path planning

Sampling-based path planning is widely used in robotics,particularly in high-dimensional state spaces.In the path planning process,collision detection is the most time-consuming operation.Therefore,we propose a learning-based path planning method that reduces the number of collision checks.We develop an efficient neural network model based on graph neural networks.The model outputs weights for each neighbor based on the obstacle,searched path,and random geometric graph,which are used to guide the planner in avoiding obstacles.We evaluate the efficiency of the proposed path planning method through simulated random worlds and real-world experiments.The results demonstrate that the proposed method significantly reduces the number of collision checks and improves the path planning speed in high-dimensional environments.

Generative Adversarial Network Based Heuristics for Sampling-Based Path Planning

Sampling-based path planning is a popular methodology for robot path planning.With a uniform sampling strategy to explore the state space,a feasible path can be found without the complex geometric modeling of the configuration space.However,the quality of the initial solution is not guaranteed,and the convergence speed to the optimal solution is slow.In this paper,we present a novel image-based path planning algorithm to overcome these limitations.Specifically,a generative adversarial network(GAN)is designed to take the environment map(denoted as RGB image)as the input without other preprocessing works.The output is also an RGB image where the promising region(where a feasible path probably exists)is segmented.This promising region is utilized as a heuristic to achieve non-uniform sampling for the path planner.We conduct a number of simulation experiments to validate the effectiveness of the proposed method,and the results demonstrate that our method performs much better in terms of the quality of the initial solution and the convergence speed to the optimal solution.Furthermore,apart from the environments similar to the training set,our method also works well on the environments which are very different from the training set.

Simultaneous manipulations of thermal expansion and conductivity in symbiotic ScTaO_(4)/SmTaO_(4) composites via multiscale effects

Effective manipulations of thermal expansion and conductivity are significant for improving operational performances of protective coatings,thermoelectric,and radiators.This work uncovers determinant mechanisms of the thermal expansion and conductivity of symbiotic ScTaO_(4)/SmTaO_(4) composites as thermal/environmental barrier coatings(T/EBCs),and we consider the effects of interface stress and thermal resistance.The weak bonding and interface stress among composite grains manipulate coefficient of thermal expansion(CTE)stretching from 6.4×10^(−6) to 10.7×10^(−6) K^(−1) at 1300℃,which gets close to that of substrates in T/EBC systems.The multiscale effects,including phonon scattering at the interface,mitigation of the phonon speed(vp),and lattice point defects,synergistically depress phonon thermal transports,and we estimate the proportions of different parts.The interface thermal resistance(R)reduces the thermal conductivity(k)by depressing phonon speed and scattering phonons because of different acoustic properties and weak bonding between symbiotic ScTaO_(4) and SmTaO_(4) ceramics in the composites.This study proves that CTE of tantalates can be artificially regulated to match those of different substrates to expand their applications,and the uncovered multiscale effects can be used to manipulate thermal transports of various materials.

Biometric recognition is a widely used technology for user authentication.In the application of this technology,biometric security and recognition accuracy are two important issues that should be considered.In terms of biometric security,cancellable biometrics is an effective technique for protecting biometric data.Regarding recognition accuracy,feature representation plays a significant role in the performance and reliability of cancellable biometric systems.How to design good feature representations for cancellable biometrics is a challenging topic that has attracted a great deal of attention from the computer vision community,especially from researchers of cancellable biometrics.Feature extraction and learning in cancellable biometrics is to find suitable feature representations with a view to achieving satisfactory recognition performance,while the privacy of biometric data is protected.This survey informs the progress,trend and challenges of feature extraction and learning for cancellable biometrics,thus shedding light on the latest developments and future research of this area.

Strong earthquake clustering around the eastern Tibetan Plateau after the 2008 MW7.9 Wenchuan earthquake

After the 2008 M_W7.9 Wenchuan earthquake,the eastern Tibetan Plateau experienced a series of M_W>6.0 earthquakes,including the 2013 M_W6.6 Lushan,2014 M_W6.1 Kangding and 2017 M_W6.5 Jiuzhaigou events.Based on available constraints,we build a three-dimensional viscoelastic finite element model to calculate Coulomb failure stress caused by these strong earthquakes.In this model,the geometry and slip vector of the initial rupture zone of each earthquake are used to better evaluate the earthquake-related stress projection.Considering reasonable ranges of viscosities for the crust and upper mantle in different tectonic units,numerical results show that after the Wenchuan earthquake,the coseismic Coulomb failure stress change at the hypocenters of the subsequent earthquakes increased to approximately+0.012–+0.040,+0.01–+0.03,and+0.008–+0.015 MPa,respectively.With viscoelastic relaxation of the lower crust and upper mantle,the Coulomb failure stress change at the hypocenters of these earthquakes accumulated to about+0.014–+0.042,+0.016–+0.036,and+0.003–+0.007 MPa just before their occurrence.This suggests that the Wenchuan earthquake indeed triggered or hastened the occurrence of the Lushan,Kangding and Jiuzhaigou events,supporting that strong earthquake clustering around the eastern Tibetan Plateau could be related to stress interaction between the seismogenic faults.Besides,~94%and^6%of the stress increase around(and before the occurrence of)the Kangding earthquake were contributed by the Wenchuan event and the Lushan event,respectively;the positive Coulomb failure stress change at the Jiuzhaigou earthquake hypocenter was related to coseismic slip partitioning of the Wenchuan earthquake.This means that stress interaction among the earthquakes could be controlled by the combined effect of stress of the previous events and by the complexity of earthquake ruptures.Thus,in researches on the earthquake-triggering mechanism,special attentions should be paid on both details of the rupture model and multiple factors of prev

The win-win pathway of economic growth and CO_2 emission reduction:a case study for China

Continuously reducing the CO_2 intensity of GDP is the core strategy for developing countries to realize the dual targets of economic growth and CO_2 emissions reduction. The measures are twofold: one is to strengthen energy saving and decrease energy intensity of GDP and the other is to promote energy structural decarbonization and reduce CO_2 intensity of energy consumption. In order to control global temperature rise no more than 2℃, the decrease in CO_2 intensity of GDP needs surpass 4% before 2030, but it could be merely about 2% based on the current trend. Therefore, all countries ought to speed up the low-carbon transition in energy and economy. As for China, keeping a continuous decline in CO_2 intensity of GDP of 4%-5% will ensure the realization of the NDC objectives, and also promotes the early peaking of CO_2 emissions before 2030. China will play a positive leading role in realizing a win-win low-carbon development coordinating sustainable development and climate change mitigation.

Design of a Flexible Capture Mechanism Inspired by Sea Anemone for Non-cooperative Targets

Robotic grippers have been used in industry as end-effectors but are usually limited to operations in pre-defined workspace.However,few devices can capture irregularly shaped dynamic targets in space,underwater and other unstructured environments.In this paper,a novel continuum arm group mechanism inspired by the morphology and motions of sea anemones is proposed.It is able to dissipate and absorb the kinetic energy of a fast moving target in omni-direction and utilize multiple arms to wrap and lock the target without accurate positioning control.Wire-driven actuation systems are implemented in the individual continuum arms,achieving both bending motion and stiffness regulation.Through finite element method,the influence of different configurations of the continuum arm group on the capture performance is analyzed.A robotic prototype is constructed and tested,showing the presented arm group mechanism has high adaptability to capture targets with different sizes,shapes,and incident angles.

Artificial intelligence-assisted colorimetry for urine glucose detection towards enhanced sensitivity,accuracy,resolution,and anti-illuminating capability

Colorimetry often suffers from deficiency in quantitative determination,susceptibility to ambient illuminance,and low sensitivity and visual resolution to tiny color changes.To offset these deficiencies,we incorporate deep machine learning into colorimetry by introducing a convolutional neural network(CNN)with powerful parallel processing,self-organization,and self-learning capabilities.As a proof of concept,a plasmonic nanosensor is proposed for the colorimetric detection of glucose by coupling Benedict’s reagent with gold nanoparticles(AuNPs),which relies on the assemble of AuNPs into dendritic nanochains by Cu2O.The distinct difference of refractive index between Cu2O and Au and the localized surface plasmon resonance coupling effect among AuNPs leads to a broad spectral shift as well as abundant color changes,thereby providing sufficient data for selflearning enabled by machine learning.The CNN is then used to fully diversify the learning and training of the images from standard samples under different ambient conditions and to obtain a classifier that can not only recognize tiny color changes that are imperceptible to human eyes,but also exhibit high accuracy and excellent anti-environmental interference capability.This classifier is then compiled as an application(APP)and implanted into a smartphone with Android environment.306 clinical urine samples were detected using the proposed method and the results showed a satisfactory correlation(87.6%)with that of a standard blood glucose test method.More importantly,this method can be generalized to other applications in colorimetry,and more broadly,in other scientific domains that involve image analysis and quantification.

Numerical simulation of frost jacking response of a single pile considering hydro-thermo-mechanical coupling

Permafrost is widely distributed in China and around the world.In permafrost regions,soil frost heave and thawing are severe and frequent,and can destabilize pile foundations.To this end,a finite element model of a single pile in frozen soil is established to investigate the frost heave and frost jacking response to ensure its safety in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.Firstly,a hydro-thermal coupling model of a single pile in frozen soil is established based on coupling parameters and initial and boundary conditions.Then the temperature and moisture distributions are analyzed through the established coupling model.A hydro-thermo-mechanical coupling model is developed by importing the ice content and temperature results.Simulation results indicate that the amount of frost heave is greater at locations closer to the ground surface,and the displacement is smaller for frozen soil that is closer to the side of the pile.The results on frost jacking behavior of piles from this study can serve as a reference for the design,construction and maintenance of foundations.
