A mathematic equation derived from host-pathogen interactions elucidates the significance of integrating modern medicine with traditional Chinese medicine to treat infectious diseases

The prognosis of infectious diseases is determined by host-pathogen interactions.Control of pathogens has been the central dogma of treating infectious diseases in modern medicine,but the pathogen-directed medicine is facing significant challenges,including a lack of effective antimicrobials for newly emerging pathogens,pathogen drug resistance,and drug side effects.Here,a mathematic equation(ter-med equation of host-pathogen interactions,HPI-Equation)is developed to dissect the key variables of hostpathogen interactions.It shows that control of pathogens does not necessarily lead to host recov-ery.Instead,a combination of promoting a host’s power of self-healing and balancing immune responses provides the best benefit for host.Moreover,the HPI-Equation elucidates the scientific basis of traditional Chinese medicine(TCM),a host-based medicine that treats infectious diseases by promot-ing self-healing power and balancing immune responses.The importance of self-healing power eluci-dated in the HPIEquation is confirmed by recent studies that the tolerance mechanism,which is discovered in plants and animals and conceptually similar to self-healing power,improves host survival without directly attacking pathogens.In summary,the HPI-Equation describes host-pathogen interac-tions with mathematical logic and precision;it translates the ancient wisdoms of TCM into apprehen-sible modern sciences and opens a new venue for integrating TCM and modern medicine for a future medicine.

Cu single atoms embedded on hollow g-C_(3)N_(4)nanospheres with enhanced charge transfer and separation for efficient photocatalysis

Establishing an effective charge transfer mechanism in carbon nitride(g-C_(3)N_(4))to enhance its photocatalytic activity remains a limiting nuisance.Herein,the combination design of a single Cu atom with hollow g-C_(3)N_(4)nanospheres(Cu-N_(3)structure)has been proven to offer significant opportunities for this crucial challenge.Moreover,this structure endows two pathways for charge transfer in the reaction,namely,the N atoms in the three-dimensional planar structure are only bonded with a single Cu atom,and charge transfer occurs between the plane and the layered structure due to the bending of the interlayered g-C_(3)N_(4)hollow nanospheres.Notably,Cu-N_(3)and hollow nanosphere structures have been certified to greatly enhance the efficiency of photogenerated carrier separation and transfer between the layers and planes by ultrafast spectral analysis.As a result,this catalyst possesses unparalleled photocatalytic efficiency.Specifically,the hydrogen production rate up to 2040μmol h^(−1) g^(−1),which is 51 times that of pure C_(3)N_(4)under visible light conditions.The photocatalytic degradation performance of tetracycline and oxidation performance of benzene is also expressed,with a degradation rate of 100%,a conversion of 97.3%and a selectivity of 99.9%.This work focuses on the structure-activity relationship to provide the possibilities for the development of potential photocatalytic materials.

Flow characteristics and hot workability of a typical low-alloy high-strength steel during multi-pass deformation

Heavy components of low-alloy high-strength(LAHS) steels are generally formed by multi-pass forging. It is necessary to explore the flow characteristics and hot workability of LAHS steels during the multi-pass forging process, which is beneficial to the formulation of actual processing parameters. In the study, the multi-pass hot compression experiments of a typical LAHS steel are carried out at a wide range of deformation temperatures and strain rates. It is found that the work hardening rate of the experimental material depends on deformation parameters and deformation passes, which is ascribed to the impacts of static and dynamic softening behaviors. A new model is established to describe the flow characteristics at various deformation passes. Compared to the classical Arrhenius model and modified Zerilli and Armstrong model, the newly proposed model shows higher prediction accuracy with a confidence level of 0.98565. Furthermore, the connection between power dissipation efficiency(PDE) and deformation parameters is revealed by analyzing the microstructures. The PDE cannot be utilized to reflect the efficiency of energy dissipation for microstructure evolution during the entire deformation process, but only to assess the efficiency of energy dissipation for microstructure evolution in a specific deformation parameter state.As a result, an integrated processing map is proposed to better study the hot workability of the LAHS steel, which considers the effects of instability factor(IF), PDE, and distribution and size of grains. The optimized processing parameters for the multi-pass deformation process are the deformation parameters of 1223–1318 K and 0.01–0.08 s^(-1). Complete dynamic recrystallization occurs within the optimized processing parameters with an average grain size of 18.36–42.3 μm. This study will guide the optimization of the forging process of heavy components.

Novel phenanthrene/bibenzyl trimers from the tubers of Bletilla striata attenuate neuroinﬂammation via inhibition of NF-κB signaling pathway

Five novel(9,10-dihydro)phenanthrene and bibenzyl trimers,as well as two previously identified biphenanthrenes and bibenzyls,were isolated from the tubers of Bletilla striata.Their structures were elucidated through comprehensive analyses of NMR and HRESIMS spectroscopic data.The absolute configurations of these compounds were determined by calculating rotational energy barriers and comparison of experimental and calculated ECD curves.Compounds 5b and 6 exhibited inhibitory effects on LPS-induced NO production in BV-2 cells,with IC_(50) values of 12.59±0.40 and 15.59±0.83μmol·L^(-1),respectively.A mechanistic study suggested that these compounds may attenuate neuroinflammation by reducing the activation of the AKT/IκB/NF-κB signaling pathway.Additionally,compounds 3a,6,and 7 demonstrated significant PTP1B inhibitory activities,with IC_(50) values of 1.52±0.34,1.39±0.11,and 1.78±0.01μmol·L^(-1),respectively.Further investigation revealed that compound 3a might inhibit LPS-induced PTP1B overexpression and NF-κB activation,thereby mitigating the neuroinflammatory response in BV-2 cells.

As an increasingly used alternative to perfluorooctanoic acid(PFOA),hexafluoropropylene oxide trimer acid(HFPO-TA)has been widely detected in global water environments.However,little is known regarding its toxic effects on cardiovascular development.Here,zebrafish embryos were treated with egg water containing 0,60,120,or 240 mg/L HFPO-TA.Results showed that HFPO-TA treatment led to a significant reduction in both larval survival percentage and heart rate.Furthermore,HFPO-TA exposure caused severe pericardial edema and elongation of the sinus venous to bulbus arteriosus distance(SV-BA)in Tg(myl7:GFP)transgenic larvae,disrupting the expression of genes involved in heart development and thus causing abnormal heart looping.Obvious sprouting angiogenesis was observed in the 120 and 240 mg/L exposed Tg(fli:GFP)transgenic larvae.HFPO-TA treatment also impacted the mRNA levels of genes involved in the vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF)pathway and embryonic vascular development.HFPO-TA exposure significantly decreased erythrocyte number in Tg(gata1:DsRed)transgenic embryos and influenced gene expression associated with the heme metabolism pathway.HFPO-TA also induced oxidative stress and altered the transcriptional levels of genes related to cell cycle and apoptosis,inhibiting cell proliferation while promoting apoptosis.Therefore,HFPO-TA exposure may induce abnormal development of the cardiovascular and hematopoietic systems in zebrafish embryos,suggesting it may not be a suitable or safe alternative for PFOA.

Recommendation System with Biclustering

The massive growth of online commercial data has raised the request for an automatic recommender system to benefit both users and merchants.One of the most frequently used recommendation methods is collaborative filtering,but its accuracy is limited by the sparsity of the rating dataset.Most existing collaborative filtering methods consider all features when calculating user/item similarity and ignore much local information.In collaborative filtering,selecting neighbors and determining users’similarities are the most important parts.For the selection of better neighbors,this study proposes a novel biclustering method based on modified fuzzy adaptive resonance theory.To reflect the similarity between users,a new measure that considers the effect of the number of users’common items is proposed.Specifically,the proposed novel biclustering method is first adopted to obtain local similarity and local prediction.Second,item-based collaborative filtering is used to generate global predictions.Finally,the two resultant predictions are fused to obtain a final one.Experiment results demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms state-of-the-art models in terms of several aspects on three benchmark datasets.

Improving the Accuracy of Vegetation Index Retrieval for Biomass by Combining Ground-UAV Hyperspectral Data-A New Method for Inner Mongolia Typical Grasslands

Grassland biomass is an important parameter of grassland ecosystems.The complexity of the grassland canopy vegetation spectrum makes the long-term assessment of grassland growth a challenge.Few studies have explored the original spectral information of typical grasslands in Inner Mongolia and examined the influence of spectral information on aboveground biomass(AGB)estimation.In order to improve the accuracy of vegetation index inversion of grassland AGB,this study combined ground and Unmanned Aerial Vehicle(UAV)remote sensing technology and screened sensitive bands through ground hyperspectral data transformation and correlation analysis.The narrow band vegetation indices were calculated,and ground and airborne hyperspectral inversion models were established.Finally,the accuracy of the model was verified.The results showed that:(1)The vegetation indices constructed based on the ASD FieldSpec 4 and the UAV were significantly correlated with the dry and fresh weight of AGB.(2)The comparison between measured R^(2) with the prediction R^(2) indicated that the accuracy of the model was the best when using the Soil-Adjusted Vegetation Index(SAVI)as the independent variable in the analysis of AGB(fresh weight/dry weight)and four narrow-band vegetation indices.The SAVI vegetation index showed better applicability for biomass monitoring in typical grassland areas of Inner Mongolia.(3)The obtained ground and airborne hyperspectral data with the optimal vegetation index suggested that the dry weight of AGB has the best fitting effect with airborne hyperspectral data,where y=17.962e^(4.672x),the fitting R^(2) was 0.542,the prediction R^(2)was 0.424,and RMSE and REE were 57.03 and 0.65,respectively.Therefore,established vegetation indices by screening sensitive bands through hyperspectral feature analysis can significantly improve the inversion accuracy of typical grassland biomass in Inner Mongolia.Compared with ground monitoring,airborne hyperspectral monitoring better reflects the inversion of actual surface biomass.It pr

Two-stage Optimization for Active Distribution Systems Based on Operating Ranges of Soft Open Points and Energy Storage System

Due to the lack of flexible interconnection devices,power imbalances between networks cannot be relieved effectively.Meanwhile,increasing the penetration of distributed generators exacerbates the temporal power imbalances caused by large peak-valley load differences.To improve the operational economy lowered by spatiotemporal power imbalances,this paper proposes a two-stage optimization strategy for active distribution networks(ADNs)interconnected by soft open points(SOPs).The SOPs and energy storage system(ESS)are adopted to transfer power spatially and temporally,respectively.In the day-ahead scheduling stage,massive stochastic scenarios against the uncertainty of wind turbine output are generated first.To improve computational efficiency in massive stochastic scenarios,an equivalent model between networks considering sensitivities of node power to node voltage and branch current is established.The introduction of sensitivities prevents violations of voltage and current.Then,the operating ranges(ORs)of the active power of SOPs and the state of charge(SOC)of ESS are obtained from models between networks and within the networks,respectively.In the intraday corrective control stage,based on day-ahead ORs,a receding-horizon model that minimizes the purchase cost of electricity and voltage deviations is established hour by hour.Case studies on two modified ADNs show that the proposed strategy achieves spatiotemporal power balance with lower cost compared with traditional strategies.

Effect of Fe_(2)O_(3)on the Structure,Physical Properties and Crystallization of CaO-Al_(2)O_(3)-SiO_(2)Glass

The calcium aluminosilicate-based glasses(CaO-Al_(2)O_(3)-SiO_(2),CAS)with different Fe_(2)O_(3)content(0.10wt%,0.50wt%,0.90wt%,and 1.30wt%)were prepared by traditional melt-quenching method.The glass network structure,thermal and mechanical properties,and crystallization behavior changes were investigated by nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometer,Fourier-transform infrared spectro-photometer,X-ray diffractometer,differential scanning calorimetry and field emission scanning electron microscope measurements.The change of Q^(n)in glass structures reveals the glass network connectivity decreases due to the increasing content of Fe_(2)O_(3)addition,resulting in the increasing of non-bridging number in glass structure.The glass densities slightly rise from 2.644 to 2.681 g/cm^(3),while Vickers’s hardness increases at first,from 6.469 to 6.901 GPa,then slightly drops to 6.745 GPa,with Fe_(2)O_(3)content increase.There is almost no thermal expansion coefficient change from different Fe_(2)O_(3)content.The glass transmittance in visible range gradually decreases with higher Fe_(2)O_(3)content,resulting from the strong absorption of Fe^(2+)and Fe^(3+)ions.The calculated activation energy from thermal analysis results first decreases from 282.70 to 231.18 kJ/mol,and then increases to 244.02 kJ/mol,with the Fe_(2)O_(3)content increasing from 0.10wt%to 1.30wt%.Meanwhile,the maximum Avrami constant of 2.33 means the CAS glasses exhibit two-dimensional crystallization.All of the CAS glass-ceramics samples contain main crystal phase of anorthite,the microstructure appears lamellar and columnar crystals.

Primary gliosarcoma with widespread extracranial metastases--spatiotemporal morphological variation

Background:We summarize 5 cases of primary gliosarcoma with widespread extracranial metastases including our case.The glial components are eliminated due to the needs of the living environment in the process of parasitism and survival of brain glioma-sarcoma cells in lung metastasis.Methods:A PubMed search using the keywords"gliosarcoma"and"extracranial metastases"was performed followed by a review of cited literature.Our case was a 50-year-old female presented with headache and dizziness.MRI examination showed that there was a cystic solid tumor in the right temporal lobe.The tumor was removed totally.Seven months after the operation,the patient suffered recurrent intermittent headache.The resection for the recurrent tumor was performed.Postoperative pathology confirmed the recurrent gliosarcoma.A needle biopsy was performed for the nodular on the right lung.The lung tumor pathology suggested a sarcoma structure.Results:There was a female patient in five cases.The age range is 47 to 69 years old.The tumor recurred within a year.A combination of treatment modalities may extend survival;however,the prognosis remains poor.Conclusion:Primary gliosarcoma with extracranial metastases is extremely rare.Some findings uncovered an unexpected spatiotemporal morphological variation in the different foci of the same malignancy.
