The recent mass mortality event of more than 330 African elephants in Botswana has been attributed to biotoxins produced by cyanobacteria;however,scientific evidence for this is lacking.Here,by synthesizing multiple sources of data,we show that,during the past decades,the widespread hypertrophic waters in Southern Africa have entailed an extremely high risk and frequent exposure of cyanotoxins to the wildlife within this area,which functions as a hotspot of mammal species richness.The hot and dry climatic extremes have most likely acted as the primary trigger of the recent and perhaps also of prehistoric mass mortality events.As such climate extremes are projected to become more frequent in Southern Africa in the near future,there is a risk that similar tragedies may take place,rendering African megafauna species,especially those that are already endangered,in risk of extinction.Moreover,cyanotoxin poisoning amplified by climate change may have unexpected cascading effects on human societies.Seen within this perspective,the tragic mass death of the world's largest terrestrial mammal species serves as an alarming early warning signal of future environmental catastrophes in Southern Africa.We suggest that systematic,quantitative cyanotoxin risk assessments are made and precautionary actions to mitigate the risks are taken without hesitation to ensure the health and sustainability of the megafauna and human societies within the region.

Numerical investigation of the rebounding and the deposition behavior of particles during cold spraying

Particles may rebound from a substrate surface during cold spraying, which affects the quality of the coating. In this paper, the rebound phenomenon and its consequences on deposition behavior have been analyzed using the finite element analysis software ANSYS/LS-DYNA version 970. In a range of particle velocities of 50-1000 m/s, increases of the impact velocity caused a rapid decline of the rebound coefficient R to a low point Rmin. After that, R began to rise slowly. Then the effect of the impact velocities and material properties on the rebound phenomenon were analyzed. Both the material strength and density influenced this rebound phenomenon. Four stages of the impact process and a model of strain distribution were proposed in detail to explain the rebound phenomenon.

Hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)is one of the most common malignancies and is a major cause of cancer-related mortalities worldwide(Forner et al.,2018;He et al.,2023).Sarcopenia is a syndrome characterized by an accelerated loss of skeletal muscle(SM)mass that may be age-related or the result of malnutrition in cancer patients(Cruz-Jentoft and Sayer,2019).Preoperative sarcopenia in HCC patients treated with hepatectomy or liver transplantation is an independent risk factor for poor survival(Voron et al.,2015;van Vugt et al.,2016).

DNA methylation is one of the most signaficant epigenetic events which greatly influence gene activation, gene imprinting, chromatin stability, and so on. The level of methylation in genome and certain regions should be in a normal range, because any variation would cause physiological dysfunction. In account of essential roles of DNA methylation in the living system, the detection of methylation in both overall genome and specific positions has drawn great interest. So far many biological and chemical methods have been developed to detect DNA methylation. Herein, we summerize some novel methods mainly based on chemical modification and analytic methods in DNA detection.

Microstructure and properties of indium tin oxide thin films deposited by RF-magnetron sputtering

Tin-doped indium oxide （ITO） thin films were prepared using conventional radio frequency （RF） planar magnetron sputtering equipped with IR irradiation using a ceramic target of In2O3/SnO2 with a mass ratio of 1：1 at various IR irradiation temperatures T1 （from room temperature to 400℃）. The refractive index, deposited ratio, and resistivity are functions of the sputtering Ar gas pressure. The microstructure of ITO thin films is related to IR T1, the crystalline seeds appear at T1= 300℃, and the films are amorphous at the temperature ranging from 27℃ to 400℃. AFM investigation shows that the roughness value of peak-valley of ITO thin film （Rp-v） and the surface microstructure of rio thin films have a close relation with T1. The IR irradiation results in a widening value of band-gap energy due to Burstein-Moss effect and the maximum visible transmittance shifts toward a shorter wavelength along with a decrease in the film＇s refractive index. The plasma wavelength and the refractive index of ITO thin films are relative to the T1. XPS investigation shows that the photoelectrolytic properties can be deteriorated by the sub-oxides. The deterioration can be decreased by increasing the oxygen flow rote （fo2）, and the mole ratio of Sn/In in the samples reduces with an increase info2.

This article presents a highly efficient method for substrate-integrated-waveguide（SIW） filters to achieve very wide stopbands. By employing the proposed trisection slots in addition to the bisection slots as the inter-coupling structures, all spurious modes below TE505 of a SIW filter working in the fundamental mode TE101（f0）can be eliminated without requiring additional structure or complex theoretical analysis, without affecting the design of the fundamental passbands, and without degrading the performance of the filters. For verification, two prototype filters are designed, fabricated, and measured with wide stopbands up to 4.15f0 and 4.83f0, respectively. The proposed technique could facilitate the development of high-performance wide-stopband SIW filters for microwave/wireless circuits and systems.

Identification of Pns12 as the second silencing suppressor of Rice gall dwarf virus

RNA silencing is a conserved mechanism found ubiquitously in eukaryotic organisms.It has been used to regulate gene expression and development.In addition,RNA silencing serves as an important mechanism in plants' defense against invasive nucleic acids,such as viruses,transposons,and transgenes.As a counter-defense,most plants,and some animal viruses,encode RNA silencing suppressors to interfere at one or several points of the silencing pathway.In this study,we showed that Pns12 of RGDV (Rice gall dwarf virus) exhibits silencing suppressor activity on the reporter green fluorescent protein in transgenic Nicotiana benthamiana line 16c.Pns12 of RGDV suppressed local silencing induced by sense RNA but had no effect on that induced by dsRNA.Expression of Pns12 also enhanced Potato virus X pathogenicity in N.benthamiana.Collectively,these results suggested that RGDV Pns12 functions as a virus suppressor of RNA silencing,which might target an upstream step of dsRNA formation in the RNA silencing pathway.Furthermore,we showed that Pns12 is localized mainly in the nucleus of N.benthamiana leaf cells.

The tests of box-type structures under internal-blast loading are carried out. Then a numerical analysis of the test structures is done using a fully coupled numerical finite element model. The break-up process of the structure is simulated. The failure modes of the simulated structure agree well with the experimental results. The effects of the size of the reinforcing bars and the detailing of connections among the rebars in the concrete on the throw velocity of the fragments are discussed.
