Sustainable transportation in the US： A review of proposals, policies, and programs since 2000

This paper reviews the research, policy proposals and recommendations, implemented policies, and programs on sustainable transportation since 2000, with regional focus on the US, using the UK （related to the European Union if appropriate）, and Canada as references. The paper finds that the concept of sustainable transportation has been given increased attention in all places. There are significant variances between the research, policy proposal, and implementation. Efforts made towards sustainable transportation, and the focus of the efforts at entities within and outside the US also vary notably. As a whole, the US did more research on sustainable transportation than the reference countries and it even undertook several studies of sustainable transportation practices in West Europe. The US federal government is less aggressive than its foreign counterparts in marketing and implementing sustainable transporta- tion. This is evidenced by a lack of overarching federal policy （mandate） on and a universal working definition for sustainable transportation, and absence of a gateway and dedicated website to market and disseminate the idea of sustainable development in general and sustainable transportation in particular.

We predict Co-based chalcogenides with a diamond-like structure can host unconventional high temperature superconductivity(high-Tc). The essential electronic physics in these materials stems from the Co layers with each layer being formed by vertex-shared CoA_4(A=S, Se, Te) tetrahedra complexes, a material genome proposed recently by us to host potential unconventional high-Tcclose to a d7 filling configuration in 3 d transition metal compounds. We calculate the magnetic ground states of different transition metal compounds with this structure. It is found that(Mn, Fe, Co)-based compounds all have a G-type antiferromagnetic(AFM) insulating ground state while Ni-based compounds are paramagnetic *** AFM interaction is the largest in the Co-based compounds as the three t2 gorbitals all strongly participate in AFM superexchange interactions. The abrupt quenching of the magnetism from the Co to Ni-based compounds is very similar to those from Fe to Co-based pnictides in which a C-type AFM state appears in the Fe-based ones but vanishes in the Co-based ones. This behavior can be considered as an electronic signature of the high-Tcgene. Upon doping, as we predicted before, this family of Co-based compounds favor a strong d-wave pairing superconducting state.

Viscous fingering in a modified Hele-Shaw cell is numerically investigated. The cell allows periodic variation of depth in the lateral direction. The wavenumber n of the depth perturbation has great influence on fingering patterns. For n = 1, the fingering pattern due to the interface instability remains the same as that in the conventional Hele- Shaw cell, while the depth variation causes the steady finger to be a little narrower. For n = 2, four different fingering patterns are captured, similar to the available experimental observations in a modified Hele-Shaw cell containing a centered step-like occlusion. It is found that new fingering patterns appear as n further increases, among which, two patterns with spatial oscillation along both edges of the finger are particularly interesting. One is a symmetric oscillatory finger for n = 3, and the other is an asymmetric one for n = 4. The influence of capillary number on fingering patterns is studied for n = 3 and 4. We find that spatial oscillation of the finger nearly ceases at moderate capillary numbers and occurs again as the capillary number increases further. Meanwhile, the wide finger shifts to the narrow one. It is accompanied by a sudden decrease in the finger width which otherwise decreases continuously as the capillary number increases. The wavenumber and the amplitude of depth perturbation have little effect on the finger width.

The development of a distributed trajectory-tracking control strategy that is independent of velocity measurements is critical to achieving finite-time tracking control of autonomous underwater vehicle(AUV) systems. In this study, a group of heterogeneous AUV systems with intermittent communication links is considered and a finite-time trajectory-tracking control strategy is developed. The strategy includes two observers and one controller proposed for each follower-AUV. The first observer, a hybrid finite-time observer,estimates the state of the leader, whereas the second observer, which relies only on the position measurement,is proposed to estimate the states of the follower-AUV itself. In addition, a distributed trajectory-tracking controller is designed using the states estimated by the intermittent communication network even without velocity measurements. A homogeneous technique is utilized to prove that all followers can track the leader in a finite time. Finally, the effectiveness of the developed finite-time tracking control strategy is illustrated by numerical simulations.

The hybrid modular multilevel converter(MMC)based on half-bridge sub-modules(HBSMs)and full-bridge submodules(FBSMs)can operate at low DC voltages and clear DC side fault ***,the costs and power losses are much higher in hybrid *** auxiliary full-bridge converter(AFC)is designed to reconstruct the converter structure in the arm level,and the HBSMs output capacitor voltage through the AFC can attain similar capabilities to hybrid *** operational principle of the auxiliary full-bridge converter is discussed,and the low voltage operation and non-blocking fault ride through control are verified in a two-terminal DC network *** economic analysis,the power loss of the AFC is similar to a HBSM MMC but the total investment is lower than a hybrid MMC,making the AFC a promising solution to improve the existing HBSM converter with more controllability.

We find that the vortex bound states in superconducting topological semimetals are gapless owing to topological massless excitations in their normal *** demonstrate this univers al result in a variety of semimetals,including Dirac and Weyl semimetals,three-fold degenerate spin-1 fermions,spin-3/2Rarita-Schwinger-Weyl fermion semimetals and other exotic fermion *** formation of these gapless bound states is closely related to their Andreev specular refle ction and propagating Andreev modes in π-phase superconductor-normal metal-superconductor *** further demonstrate that these gapless states are topologically protected and can be derived from a topological pumping process.
