Effects of dietary intervention on human diseases:molecular mechanisms and therapeutic potential

Diet,serving as a vital source of nutrients,exerts a profound influence on human health and disease progression.Recently,dietary interventions have emerged as promising adjunctive treatment strategies not only for cancer but also for neurodegenerative diseases,autoimmune diseases,cardiovascular diseases,and metabolic disorders.These interventions have demonstrated substantial potential in modulating metabolism,disease trajectory,and therapeutic responses.Metabolic reprogramming is a hallmark of malignant progression,and a deeper understanding of this phenomenon in tumors and its effects on immune regulation is a significant challenge that impedes cancer eradication.Dietary intake,as a key environmental factor,can influence tumor metabolism.Emerging evidence indicates that dietary interventions might affect the nutrient availability in tumors,thereby increasing the efficacy of cancer treatments.However,the intricate interplay between dietary interventions and the pathogenesis of cancer and other diseases is complex.Despite encouraging results,the mechanisms underlying diet-based therapeutic strategies remain largely unexplored,often resulting in underutilization in disease management.In this review,we aim to illuminate the potential effects of various dietary interventions,including calorie restriction,fasting-mimicking diet,ketogenic diet,protein restriction diet,high-salt diet,high-fat diet,and high-fiber diet,on cancer and the aforementioned diseases.We explore the multifaceted impacts of these dietary interventions,encompassing their immunomodulatory effects,other biological impacts,and underlying molecular mechanisms.This review offers valuable insights into the potential application of these dietary interventions as adjunctive therapies in disease management.

Understanding plant water-use patterns is important for improving water-use efficiency and for sustainable vegetation restoration in arid and semi-arid regions. However, seasonal variations in water sources and their control by different sand-fixing plants in water-limited desert ecosystems remain poorly understood. In this study, stable isotopic ratios of hydrogen(δ^(2)H) and oxygen(δ^(18)O) in precipitation, soil water, groundwater, and xylem water were determined to document seasonal changes in water uptake by three representative plant species(Pinus sylvestris var. mongolica Litv., Amygdalus pedunculata Pall., and Salix psammophila) in the northeastern Mu Us sandy land, Northwest China. Based on the depth distribution and temporal variation of measured gravimetric soil water content(SWC), the soil water profile of the three species stands was divided into active(0.01 g g^(-1)45%) layers. Annually, P. sylvestris, A. pedunculata, and S. psammophila obtained most water from deep(59.2%±9.7%, moist layer and groundwater),intermediate(57.4%±9.8%, stable and moist layers), and shallow(54.4%±10.5%, active and stable layers) sources, respectively. Seasonally, the three plant species absorbed more than 60% of their total water uptake from the moist layer and groundwater in the early(June) dry season;then, they switched to the active and stable layers in the rainy season(July–September) for water resources(50.1%–62.5%). In the late(October–November) dry season, P. sylvestris(54.5%–66.2%) and A. pedunculata(52.9%–63.6%) mainly used water from stable and moist layers, whereas S. psammophila(52.6%–70.7%) still extracted water predominantly from active and stable layers. Comparison between sepsis-induced coagulopathy and sepsis-associated coagulopathy criteria in identifying sepsis-associated disseminated intravascular coagulation

BACKGROUND:Disseminated intravascular coagulation(DIC)is associated with increased mortality in sepsis patients.In this study,we aimed to assess the clinical ability of sepsis-induced coagulopathy(SIC)and sepsis-associated coagulopathy(SAC)criteria in identifying overt-DIC and preDIC status in sepsis patients.METHODS:Data from 419 sepsis patients were retrospectively collected from July 2018 to December 2022.The performances of the SIC and SAC were assessed to identify overt-DIC on days 1,3,7,or 14.The SIC status or SIC score on day 1,the SAC status or SAC score on day 1,and the sum of the SIC or SAC scores on days 1 and 3 were compared in terms of their ability to identify pre-DIC.The SIC or SAC status on day 1 was evaluated as a pre-DIC indicator for anticoagulant initiation.RESULTS:On day 1,the incidences of coagulopathy according to overt-DIC,SIC and SAC criteria were 11.7%,22.0%and 31.5%,respectively.The specificity of SIC for identifying overt-DIC was significantly higher than that of the SAC criteria from day 1 to day 14(P3 had a significantly higher sensitivity(72.00%)and area under the curve(AUC)(0.69)in identifying pre-DIC than did the SIC or SAC status(sensitivity:SIC status 44.00%,SAC status 52.00%;AUC:SIC status 0.62,SAC status 0.61).The sum of the SIC scores on days 1 and 3 had a higher AUC value for identifying the pre-DIC state than that of SAC(0.79 vs.0.69,P<0.001).Favorable effects of anticoagulant therapy were observed in SIC(adjusted hazard ratio[HR]=0.216,95%confidence interval[95%CI]:0.060–0.783,P=0.018)and SAC(adjusted HR=0.146,95%CI:0.041–0.513,P=0.003).CONCLUSION:The SIC and SAC seem to be valuable for predicting overt-DIC.The sum of SIC scores on days 1 and 3 has the potential to help identify pre-DIC.

Genesis and Accumulation of Paleo-Oil Reservoir in Dabei Area,Kuqa Depression,Northwest China:Implications for Tight-Gas Accumulation

Paleo-oil reservoir is of great importance to understand hydrocarbon enrichment mechanism and hydrocarbon exploration potential,but is yet poorly investigated in Kuqa Depression.The occurrence of the paleo-oil reservoir in Dabei area was proved by quantitative grain fluorescence(QGF)and fluid inclusion petrography.Development history of the paleo-oil reservoir was reconstructed through:(1)oil-source correlation;(2)time coupling of source rock maturation,porosity evolution and migration pathways.The impact of paleo-oil reservoir on tight-gas accumulation was consequently discussed.Results suggest that considerable oil was accumulated in the K_(1)bs reservoir with paleo oil-water contact in Dabei 2 Well and Dabei 201 Well at 5800 and 6040 m,respectively.Crude oil was primarily sourced from Triassic source rocks with Jurassic source rocks of secondary importance,which was at oil generation window(0.7%–1.1%Ro)during 9–6 and 7.5–5 Ma,respectively.The occurrence of K_(1)bs tight reservoir(porosity<12%)was about 25 Ma,while faults and associated fractures at Kelasue structural belt were developed approximately from 8 to 3.5 Ma.Therefore,the tight oil accumulation was formed during 8–5 Ma.The paleo-oil reservoir in Dabei 1 gas field was destroyed by the evaporation fractionation in later stage.

Hybrid model for BOF oxygen blowing time prediction based on oxygen balance mechanism and deep neural network

The amount of oxygen blown into the converter is one of the key parameters for the control of the converter blowing process,which directly affects the tap-to-tap time of converter. In this study, a hybrid model based on oxygen balance mechanism (OBM) and deep neural network (DNN) was established for predicting oxygen blowing time in converter. A three-step method was utilized in the hybrid model. First, the oxygen consumption volume was predicted by the OBM model and DNN model, respectively. Second, a more accurate oxygen consumption volume was obtained by integrating the OBM model and DNN model. Finally, the converter oxygen blowing time was calculated according to the oxygen consumption volume and the oxygen supply intensity of each heat. The proposed hybrid model was verified using the actual data collected from an integrated steel plant in China, and compared with multiple linear regression model, OBM model, and neural network model including extreme learning machine, back propagation neural network, and DNN. The test results indicate that the hybrid model with a network structure of 3 hidden layer layers, 32-16-8 neurons per hidden layer, and 0.1 learning rate has the best prediction accuracy and stronger generalization ability compared with other models. The predicted hit ratio of oxygen consumption volume within the error±300 m^(3)is 96.67%;determination coefficient (R^(2)) and root mean square error (RMSE) are0.6984 and 150.03 m^(3), respectively. The oxygen blow time prediction hit ratio within the error±0.6 min is 89.50%;R2and RMSE are0.9486 and 0.3592 min, respectively. As a result, the proposed model can effectively predict the oxygen consumption volume and oxygen blowing time in the converter.

Comparison-embedded evidence-CNN model for fuzzy assessment of wear severity using multi-dimensional surface images

Wear topography is a significant indicator of tribological behavior for the inspection of machine health conditions.An intelligent in-suit wear assessment method for random topography is here proposed.Three-dimension(3D)topography is employed to address the uncertainties in wear evaluation.Initially,3D topography reconstruction from a worn surface is accomplished with photometric stereo vision(PSV).Then,the wear features are identified by a contrastive learning-based extraction network(WSFE-Net)including the relative and temporal prior knowledge of wear mechanisms.Furthermore,the typical wear degrees including mild,moderate,and severe are evaluated by a wear severity assessment network(WSA-Net)for the probability and its associated uncertainty based on subjective logic.By integrating the evidence information from 2D and 3D-damage surfaces with Dempster–Shafer(D–S)evidence,the uncertainty of severity assessment results is further reduced.The proposed model could constrain the uncertainty below 0.066 in the wear degree evaluation of a continuous wear experiment,which reflects the high credibility of the evaluation result.

Atroposelective Synthesis of 2-Arylindoles via Chiral Phosphoric Acid-Catalyzed Direct Amination of Indoles

Indole-based atropisomers are a very important class of axially chiral compounds.However,the atroposelective synthesis of axially chiral 2-arylindole remains largely unexplored.In this study,we report the successful synthesis of atropisomeric 2-arylindoles using direct amination of indoles with p-quinonediimines in the presence of chiral phosphoric acid as a catalyst.Quinonediimine acts as an aminating reagent through formal polarity inversion of imine.The malonate group on the 2-aryl of 2-indoles was found to be essen-tial for high enantioselectivity of the products.This could be due to the additional interaction between the ester group and the cata-lyst,as well as the intramolecular hydrogen bonding.Our findings provide a new strategy for the asymmetric construction of 2-arylindole atropisomers.

CFD-DEM simulation of high density particles fluidization behaviors in 3D conical spouted beds

The spouted bed has been used in the coating process of high-density nuclear fuel particle.The particle fluidization behaviors in pseudo-2D and 3D spouted beds were simulated and validated.The effects of four independent variables(cone angle,particle density,inlet gas velocity,and particle loading)on particle fluidization behaviors in the 3D spouted bed were investigated systematically.The cone angle effect on fluidization mechanism was studied quantitatively first time.A new fluidization quality index was proposed based on the particle entrainment principle,and an extreme value was obtained when the cone angle was 60°,considered to be the optimum value for the 3D conical spouted bed.It was indicated the gas–solid contact efficiency can be kept up if the gas velocity was proportional toρp 0.65 and N p 0.78 when the particle density or loading was increased.These results will be useful for geometry and operation parameters design of the 3D conical spouted bed and helpful for developing the fluidization mechanism of high-density particles.

Effect of Low-Temperature Thermal Oxidation on the Capillary Performance of Sintered Copper Powder Wicks

In this study,a composite powder capillary wick is prepared,manufactured by sintering copper powder and surface treated by low-temperature thermal oxidation.It is used to improve the performance of the capillary wick.The forced flow method and infrared imaging method are used to test the permeability and capillary performance of the samples.The effects of different oxidation temperatures on the performance of capillary wick are investigated.The experimental results show that the wetting performance of the oxidized samples is significantly enhanced.With the increase of oxidation temperature,the permeability decreases.The capillary height and velocity of the thermally oxidized samples are significantly higher than those of the untreated capillary wick.However,the oxidation temperature needs to be adjusted to obtain the best capillary performance.The highest capillary performance is found at oxidation temperature of 300℃,with an increase of 46% compared to the untreated ones.Comparisons with other composite wicks show that the sample with an oxidation temperature of 300℃ has competitive capillary performance,making it a favorable alternative to two-phase heat transfer device.This study shows that combining low-temperature thermal oxidation technology with powder sintering is a convenient and effective method to improve the capillary performance of powder wicks.

Mirizzi syndrome is a serious complication of gallstone disease.It is caused by the impacted stones in the gallbladder neck or cystic duct.One of the features of Mirizzi syndrome is severe inflammation or dense fibrosis at the Calot’s triangle.In our clinical practice,bile duct,branches of right hepatic artery and right portal vein clinging to gallbladder infundibulum are often observed due to gallbladder infundibulum adhered to right hepatic hilum.The intraoperative damage of branches of right hepatic artery occurs more easily than that of bile duct,all of which are hidden pitfalls for surgeons.Magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography(MRCP)and endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography(ERCP)are the preferable tools for the diagnosis of Mirizzi syndrome.Anterograde cholecystectomy in Mirizzi syndrome is easy to damage branches of right hepatic artery and bile duct due to gallbladder infundibulum adhered to right hepatic hilum.Subtotal cholecystectomy is an easy,safe and definitive approach to Mirizzi syndrome.When combined with the application of ERCP,a laparoscopic management of Mirizzi syndrome by well-trained surgeons is feasible and safe.The objective of this review was to highlight its existing problems:(1)low preoperative diagnostic rate,(2)easy to damage bile duct and branches of right hepatic artery,and(3)high concomitant gallbladder carcinoma.Meanwhile,the review aimed to discuss the possible therapeutic strategies:(1)to enhance its preoperative recognition by imaging findings,and(2)to avoid potential pitfalls during surgery.
