Propofol application combined with ischemic preconditioning for aortic occlusion-induced spinal cord injury

BACKGROUND： Propofol combined with ischemic preconditioning （IPC） could prevent spinal ischemia/reperfusion injury. However, the effect of this combination remains poorly understood. OBJECTIVE： To measure neuroprotection of IPC in combination with propofol in a rabbit model of aorta occlusion-induced spinal injury. DESIGN, TIME AND SETTING： A randomized, controlled, animal experiment was performed at the Laboratory of Anesthesiology, Wuhan University and Central Laboratory of the First Clinical Medical College, China Three Gorges University, from October 2006 to April 2008. MATERIALS： Propofol was purchased from AstraZeneca, UK; malondialdehyde （MDA） and superoxide dismutase （SOD） kits were purchased from Nanjing Jiancheng Bioengineering Institute, China. METHODS： A total of 32 male, Japanese White rabbits, were randomly assigned to model, IPC, propofol, and combination groups, with eight rabbits in each group, using 2×2 factorial experimental design. Spinal ischemiaJreperfusion injury was induced by abdominal aorta occlusion for 40 minutes and reperfusion for 7 days. The IPC group was subjected to IPC treatment for 30 minutes prior to occlusion; the propofol group was treated with propofol for 10 minutes before occlusion; and the combination group underwent IPC treatment for 30 minutes and propofol for 10 minutes prior to occlusion. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES： Serum MDA levels and SOD activity were detected 35 minutes prior to occlusion, immediately after reperfusion, and 60 minutes and 7 days after reperfusion, respectively. Rabbit hind limb nerve function and spinal pathological changes following injury were observed, and spinal neuronal apoptosis was determined using the terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated dUTP nick-end labeling method. Expression for peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma in pituitary adenomas 38 cases for semi-quantitative immunohistochemical analysis

BACKGROUND： It has been reported that peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ （PPAR γ ） is highly expressed in lung cancer, colon cancer, and gastric cancer, as well as other tumors.OBJECTIVE： To study expression of PPAR γ in pituitary adenomas and analyze the role of PPAR γ in hormonal typing of pituitary adenomas. DESIGN, TIME AND SETTING： Semi-quantitative immunohistochemistry of pathological specimens. The experiment was conducted at the Department of Neurosurgery, Wuxi Second Hospital Affiliated to Nanjing Medical University between January 2002 and May 2005. MATERIALS： Surgical resection samples of pituitary adenomas from 38 cases （18 male and 20 female） were analyzed. Eight cases were determined to be invasive pituitary adenomas and 30 cases were non-invasive pituitary adenomas. Hormonal classification of the types of pituitary adenomas revealed somatotrophic adenomas in six cases, corticotrophic adenoma in five cases, prolactinomas in 13 cases, multi-hormone secreting adenomas in six cases, and eight cases of adenoma without altered endocrine function. Five autopsy specimens were collected during the same period from patients of matching age that died from unrelated diseases and were included as normal anterior pituitar3, controls. METHODS： Cell counts for positive immunohistochemical signals were recorded from histopathological sections. The percentage of positive cells was reported as a semi-quantitative analysis. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES： The rate of PPAR γ positive cells in different types of adenoma was based on hormonal levels and invasiveness of pituitary tumor cells. RESULTS： All tumor biopsies were determined to express PPAR γ. The rate of PPAR γ -positive cells ranged between 8%-65% in the pituitary adenomas. According to hormonal type, PPAR γ expression did not vary between the groups. Characteristics of Bi-2223 HTS Tapes Under Short-Circuit Current Impacts in Hybrid Energy Transmission Pipelines

A hybrid energy transmission pipeline is proposed with the aim of long-distance cooperative transmission of electricity and chemical fuels, which is composed of an inner high-temperature superconducting (HTS) power cable and outer liquefied natural gas (LNG) pipeline. The flowing LNG could maintain the operating temperature of the inner HTS power cable within the range of 85 K-90 K, thus the Bi-2223 superconductors in the HTS power cable produce little Joule loss with the transmission current below the critical current. Owing to the advantages of high power density, low transmission losses and economical manufacturing costs, the hybrid energy transmission pipeline is expected to be widely utilized in the near future. In order to ensure the safety of the HTS power cable and explosive LNG in case of short-circuit faults, this paper tests and analyzes the characteristics of Bi-2223 HTS tapes of the Type HT-CA, Type HT-SS and Type H models under short-circuit current impacts at the LNG cooling temperature (85 K-90 K). An experimental platform is designed and established for the ampacity tests of HTS tapes above LN2 cooling temperature (77 K). The AC over-current impact tests at 85 K-90 K are carried out on each sample of Bi-2223 tapes respectively, and the experimental results are analyzed and compared to evaluate their performances under different operating conditions. The results indicate that the Type HT-CA tape can withstand 50 Hz short-circuit current impact with the amplitude of 1108 A (10 times of critical current Ic ) for 100 ms at 90 K, and its resistance is the smallest of the three tested samples under similar current impacts. Therefore, the Type HT-CA Bi-2223 tape is the optimal superconductor of the HTS power cable in the hybrid energy transmission pipeline.

Flow characteristics and hot workability of a typical low-alloy high-strength steel during multi-pass deformation

Heavy components of low-alloy high-strength(LAHS) steels are generally formed by multi-pass forging. It is necessary to explore the flow characteristics and hot workability of LAHS steels during the multi-pass forging process, which is beneficial to the formulation of actual processing parameters. In the study, the multi-pass hot compression experiments of a typical LAHS steel are carried out at a wide range of deformation temperatures and strain rates. It is found that the work hardening rate of the experimental material depends on deformation parameters and deformation passes, which is ascribed to the impacts of static and dynamic softening behaviors. A new model is established to describe the flow characteristics at various deformation passes. Compared to the classical Arrhenius model and modified Zerilli and Armstrong model, the newly proposed model shows higher prediction accuracy with a confidence level of 0.98565. Furthermore, the connection between power dissipation efficiency(PDE) and deformation parameters is revealed by analyzing the microstructures. The PDE cannot be utilized to reflect the efficiency of energy dissipation for microstructure evolution during the entire deformation process, but only to assess the efficiency of energy dissipation for microstructure evolution in a specific deformation parameter *** a result, an integrated processing map is proposed to better study the hot workability of the LAHS steel, which considers the effects of instability factor(IF), PDE, and distribution and size of grains. The optimized processing parameters for the multi-pass deformation process are the deformation parameters of 1223–1318 K and 0.01–0.08 s^(-1). Complete dynamic recrystallization occurs within the optimized processing parameters with an average grain size of 18.36–42.3 μm. This study will guide the optimization of the forging process of heavy components.
